A novel instrumentation and analysis technique, called GLOSTREXT method has recently been introduced for bored pile load tests in Malaysia. This technique provides an innovative and improved alternative for conventional bored pile instrumentation methods commonly practiced for the past few decades. Results for five case histories involving full scale static load tests for high capacity bored piles with both new and conventional instrumentation details placed in within the same instrumented piles are presented to demonstrate the advantages of this novel technique. Results show good agreement between the new and conventional instrumentation.

The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a study of various methods for producing magnesium metal from magnesite ores in 1936 at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. This work included a study of the basic principles involved in the reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon, which soon led to the development of a continuous process. In May 1939, a small pilot plant was operated, which included a small single-phase arc furnace with a hydraulic feed mechanism and an oil-spray device for shock cooling the metal vapor. 5/Subsequently, the Ford Motor. Co., Dearborn, Michigan, began a study of this process on a larger scale. A pilot plant with a nominal capacity of 10 pounds of magnesium metal per hour was constructed and operated intermittently. A larger unit with a nominal capacity of 100 pounds of magnesium per hour was partly constructed when war activities prevented experimental work.In the meantime, the process was greatly improved through continued investigation by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, and these improvements were successfully tested by continuous operation in a small pilot plant having a normal capacity of 4 pounds an hour."

"Rock rejection during the flotation of a copper-nickel ore was improved by adding carboxymethyl cellulose to both a rougher and cleaner flotation stage. The selection of the rock depressant was based on laboratory rates studies. Plant operating results are presented which confirm the laboratory selection of two particular brands of carboxymethyl cellulose.The rock assay of the concentrate was reduced from more than 40% to less than 15%.IntroductionThe traditional method of selecting flotation reagents relied upon batch bench scale tests, conducted under arbitrary conditions, to identify the effect of the reagent under examination. Too often these were ""one-off"" tests with little or no regard paid to the reproducibility of the results. Sophisticated researchers used statistical methods to design and evaluate the experiments but they were still obliged to rely on the arbitrary and often unreliable batch tests to generate the numbers that were analyzed statistically. An interesting side-effect of the enhanced sophistication of the statistical analysis was often that no significant effects would be uncovered in a series of experiments that would have generated many positive conclusions and much further experimentation if the same results had been evaluated by the traditional method.In the recent past, at least two groups of researchers a have directed their attention to the reliability of the batch experiments with a view toward improving the reproducibility of the test data. In this work the best of the improvements advocated by both of these groups have been adopted in order to generate kinetic data from batch tests that are as reproducible as possible.The objective of the work was to reduce the rock content of a bulk sulphide concentrate produced at Inco's Shebandowan mill. During 1982 the Shebandowan concentrate analyzed 3.5% Cu, 7.4010 Ni, 25% pyrrhotite and more than 40% rock, which resulted in an MgO content of 10.4%. Besides the expense of shipping all of this rock to Sudbury, the rock also contributed to the poor filterability of the concentrate. On favourable occasions the moisture content of the filter cake was slightly over 20% by weight. The magnesia content of the concentrate was deleterious to the reverberatory furnaces used by Inco for smelting nickel concentrate because the slag viscosity increased as the magnesia content increased, and the nickel lost in the slag went up."

Cleveland-Cliffs lron Co., which operates Marquette lron Mining Co.'s Republic mine, conducted a test whereby 35,000 tons of self-fluxed pellets were produced in the grate-kiln system from specular hematite flotation concentrates. A brief description of the pelletizing plant is presented along with pertinent operating details. Date is included which compare operating conditions and the chemical and physical properties of the green and fired pellets for the self-fluxing pelletizing test with the normal acid pelletizing operation. The success of self-fluxed sinter in enhancing the operation of the blast furnace during the past few years has reasonably led to the assumption that the use of self-fluxed pellets might result in even greater furnace efficiencies. A great share of development work in agglomeration has been directed towards techniques related to the production of self-fluxed pellets, but only a limited tonnage of self-fluxed pellets had been produced on a commercial scale until this past year when The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. produced 35,000 tons of such pellets by the grate kiln system at the Republic mine during the period May 21-June 5, 1962. REPUBLIC'S GRATE-KILN PLANT The grate-kiln pelletizing process consists of four stages, namely: feed or balling circuit, traveling grate, rotary kiln and annular cooler (Fig. 1). The balling section is conventional and utilizes four 9x30-ft balling drums in closed circuit with 5x14-ft vibrating screens having 3/8-in. rod decks. The traveling grate is 12 ft wide by 126 ft long and has 14 windboxes — six in the drying section and eight in the preheat section. The rotary kiln is 15 ft ID shell and 114 ft long. The annular cooler is 40 ft in diameter and has 12 windboxes. The cooler is divided into two zones by a moveable curtain wall. The high temperature air from the first zone is used as secondary combustion air in the kiln. Normally the only heat supplied is through the burning of No. 6 oil in the single kiln burner. Hot gases pass counter to the pellet flow through the system. The exit gases from the kiln pass down draft through the preheat section through cyclones and are drawn through the drying bed prior to exiting via the stack. The temperatures are normally held within the following ranges: Kiln 2400-2445 °F Preheat 1850-1950°F Drying 480-520°F Exit gas 200°F Pellets 120°F The design capacity of the Republic mine grate-kiln system was 2500 Itpd. Sustained production in excess of 35% over design capacity has been achieved. No screening of the cooler product is practiced. PELLETIZING TEST CONDITIONS When a decision was made to proceed with a test at the Republic mine pelletizing plant to produce 35,000 tons of self-fluxed pellets, several potential failure factors had to be carefully considered. Research work on a batch and pilot plant scale indicated that the grate-kiln system at Republic would require some major changes in order to obtain optimum conditions. In many cases compromises were agreed upon as major equipment changes and revisions were not feasible. The pelletizing conditions which laboratory development tests revealed were required in order to insure successful production of self-fluxed pellets were: 1) Good mixing of limestone and concentrate and proper moisture control; 2) Higher gas flow rates in the preheat section than are normally used; 3) Higher preheat temperatures than normal; 4) Maximum kiln temperature 2350°F. There was just cause for concern about balling problems that might occur. Approximately 10% of dry pulverized limestone was to be added to the specular hematite concentrate just ahead of the Pekay mixers on the belt feeding the balling drum. Large scale

Mine wide, underground wireless communications are possible with the use of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) technology. Due to the propagation through rock of ULF radio signals a relatively small antenna can provide communications coverage over a complete mining operation. Starting as a Personal Emergency Device (PED) for emergency messaging to miners under all circumstances, the ULF communications system has grown to include capabilities of remote control of underground equipment such as pumps and fans and centralised blasting initiation. This technology is now in use on 5 continents having lately made it onto the African mining scene. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit from international mining know-how in this technology as well as local African experiences. A recent commissioning exercise for example, is expected to pay for itself in electricity savings within a few months. These and other results from practical demonstrations and usage will be covered. This novel technology becomes an integral part of the daily operating infrastructure of a mine with immediate safety and business benefits. It is able to reduce capital expenditure and is designed for ease of routine operational use. The paper will conclude with insights into current R&D for further development of this technology.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. Most metallic materials are produced from their liquid state. In order to control the properties of industrial products, it is very important to understand their solidification path and the resulting microstructures which can be significantly affected by melt undercooling. High undercooling results in rapid solidification and a refined microstructure with minimal microsegregation. This paper reports on the analysis of rapidly solidified Al-Cu droplets obtained by a single fluid atomization process, Impulse Atomization. A quantitative analysis by Rietveld refinement method of the Neutrons Diffraction data was carried out to determine the fraction of the intermetallic Al2Cu. Knowing the fraction of Al2Cu, the eutectic fractions and corresponding dendritic and eutectic undercoolings were estimated using the metastable extensions of solidus and liquidus lines of the Al-Cu system calculated by Thermo-Calc. In addition to this work, a model of microsegregation coupled with ThermoCalc software via TQ (application programming interface of ThermoCalc) and the Wang-Beckerman model for dendritic growth velocities has been developed for binary alloys. This has led to the development of a phenomenological relationship between primary phase undercooling and initial growth velocity. A comparison of estimated primary undercoolings using a coarsening model with the adiabatic undercoolings for each alloy composition has confirmed that solidification occurs under adiabatic conditions during recalescence.

A sulphide ion selective electrode (ISE) is suitable for control of sodium sulphide additions in flotation because it has a rapid response to changeS in S2- concentrations, can indicate -low concentrations at differentpH values, suffers from few interferences, and is robust enou'gh to use in a pulp. Three sulphidization techniques were studied using the lSE electrode for measurement and/or control of S2- levels. Metallurgy was assessedfrom concentrate grades and copper recovery.With slug additions of sodium sulphide, sulphidizing conditions were poorly defined and reproducibility tended to be poor. Although acceptable metallurgy could be achieved by multiple additions, sodium sulphide consumption was high.Controlled potential sulphidization readily gave good metallurgy. The optimum potential of the lSE for sulphidizing was about -500 mV versus SCE, but depended on sulphidization and flotation times; suitable times were3 and 5 min respectively for three to five stages. Application of this technique to previously untested ores gave good metallurgy in a first test in spite of variation by a factor of three in the sodium sulphide requirements ofthe ores.Simultaneous sulphidization and flotation was satisfactory when conducted at an lSE potential of -450 mV versus SCE. Mixed cha!copyrite-oxide copper ores responded satisfactorily.Besides optimizing sulphidization conditions it is also necessary to optimize xanthate additions (e.g. by measuring xanthate residuals).

"INTRODUCTION During the past 4 or 5 years the frequent occurrence of bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland field, in Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va., has caused much apprehension among miners and mining officials of that region.These bumps have caused many deaths and injuries, and have been increasing in frequency. Eight men were killed and a number injured by bumps in the first 4 months of 1934. Their unpredictable occurrence and the usual absence of any preliminary warning tremors or sounds, such as ordinarily precede a large fall of roof, cause fear of other bumps and impair the morale of mine workers.Acknowledgments This report on bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland coal field of Kentucky and Virginia is based on an investigation made at the urgent request of .the Harlan County Coal Operators Association, through James F. Bryson, director of safety of the association, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, following a series of disastrous bumps in. Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The request was granted and the writer detailed to undertake the investigation, which was made in June 1934.The officials of certain operating companies in the Cumberland field gave every facility for examining the conditions accompanying bumps in their mines. Electrowon tungsten powders were investigated with respect to consolidation, fabrication, and mechanical properties. Sheet, 0.03 inch thick, was produced and its tensile strength measured between 250° and 1,935° C. The large particle size of electrowon tungsten effectively precluded sintering to a density sufficient to allow hot working to sheet or bar. The powders were consolidated by die pressing to 70-percent density, sheathing in molybdenum, and high-energy-rate extruding to either round or sheet bar of 100-percent density. The material was then rolled conventionally to sheet. The mechanical properties of the sheet prepared from the electrowon powders compared favorably with those reported in the literature for sheet prepared from commercially produced hydrogen-reduced powder.

A prototype adaptive volume control for the loudspeaker output of mine trolley carrier phones was designed, built, and tested in the laboratory and in a mine. This volume control senses, and adapts to, the ambient acoustic noise environment in such a way as to produce a loud sound output under noisy conditions, and a quieter output under quiet conditions, thereby producing an understandable and unstartling volume level under all noise conditions. The design approach, prototype hardware, and test results are described, and the device is shown to be feasible for in-mine operations. The circuit design principles are easily applicable to currently available mina trolley carrier phones. Recommendations for practical improvements are included. An in-mine experiment to assess the practical feasibility and utility of the dedicated wire technique for overcoming poor trolley carrier phone system performance was designed, performed, and evaluated. The technique involves the use of a single, low-loss, properly terminated auxiliary wire, placed in the rail haulageway, which allows signals to naturally couple to and from the trolley wire/rail transmission line, and thereby significantly decrease the overall signal attenuation rate on the trolley wire/rail line. The in-mine dedicated wire experiment, results, and conclusions are described, and the technique is shown to be a valid and practical one for significantly Improving carrier phone system performance in mines. Guidelines for the installation and use of the dedicated wire are provided. Recommendations are made for obtaining further practical information on its performance and utility. A second in-mine experiment to assess the feasibility and utility of the low-impedance (low-Z) line technique for overcoming poor carrier phone signal transmission in mines was designed, performed and evaluated. The low-Z line technique involves the periodic connection of shunt capacitors between the trolley wire and the rail to artificially lower the line characteristic impedance. This causes the low impedance shunt loads encountered across the trolley wire/rail line to be less mismatched to the line, thereby reducing the overall attenuation of carrier phone signals. The results of in-mine experiments performed along unenergized and fully operational sections of trolley wire/rail line are described. The experiments were designed to measure line parameter such as inductance and capacitance per unit length, characteristic impedance, and propagation phase velocity, in addition to signal strength versus distance behavior under normal and low-Z line conditions. The low-Z line technique is shown to be valid, but not as practical as the dedicated wire technique which is recommended as the most favorable for most coal mine applications.

During the drilling campaign conducted between October, 1942; and May, 1943, to prove the extent of the scheelite deposit worked by King Island Scheelite N.L. at Grassy, King Island, Tasmania, 35 holes were drilled and 606 samples recovered and assayed for their content. Of these, 238 came from outside the limits of the orebody and were for the most part barren, although a few contained some scheelite. The present statistical analysis is made only of the 368 samples taken from diamond-drill cores of the orebody itself.Drilling Pattern and Sampling MethodsFrom the purely statistical viewpoint, it is realised that methods employed in selecting sites for diamong.-drilling, and of collecting samples from drill cores, do not give a completely unbiassed set of data for analysis. Fig. 1 is a sketch plan showing the relativepositions of the drillholes, which were inclined at an angle of depression of 50 deg. The pattern does not conform to a properly randomized and' regularly-spaced grid, the positions of the later holes being determined by the results obtained from previous holes.Statistically, the bias is, therefore, favourable. The unequal spacing of the drill holes and the lack of uniformity in direction of the lines along which the holes were drilled are unsatisfactory from the mathematical viewpoint; but it is realised that these irregularitiesare difficult to avoid in determining by the most economical methods the extent of such an orebody, and are dictated by geological rather than mathematical necessity.Sampling, also, is lacking in complete uniformity. Each sample is approximately 10ft. in length. However, owing to the fact that 100% recovery of core is rarely achieved, and actual lengths of samples taken are ,primarily governed by the length of the drill runs,and secondarily by lithological changes, there is a considerable amount of variation in the sample length.AssayingWith the exception of 28 samples from three drill holes all samples dealt with in this paper were assayed in the Melbourne University Ore-Dressing Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. These assays were given to the nearest 0.05% WOg as it was considered that more accurate determination was not possible. This fact has been taken into consideration in the frequency analysis below. The 28 assays determined by the Tasmanian Mines Department were given to the nearest 0.01%.

"INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the high-grade manganese ore used in the United States is imported from overseas. During the early part of the recent World War importations of manganese ore were seriously threated, and it appeared that it would be necessary to utilize low-grade domestic ores to the fullest possible extent. Among the processes that appeared to offer the best possibilities for beneficating low-grade domestic oxide manganese ores, which ordinarily are net readily amenable concentration by ore-dressing methods, were those involving leaching with sulfur dioxide. The Bureau of Mines therefore investigated the amenability of a large number of such ores to sulfur dioxide leaching.Several sulfur dioxide processes for beneficiating low-grade oxide manganese ores have been proposed. 3/ One of these, based on a patent by Van Arsdale and Maier, 4/ was used recently in a plant constructed to treat 1,000 tons per day of 20-percent manganese ore from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas, Nev. 5/ In this process the ore slurry is leached with sulfur dioxide gas, the resulting solution is evaporated to crystallize the manganese sulfate, the crystals are decomposed thermally to produce high-grade manganese oxide and regenerate sulfur dioxide, and the manganese oxide product is nodulized. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a process 6/ in which a suspension of the ore in calcium dithionate solution is leached with dilute S02 gas, the manganese is recovered from the resulting solution by a simple lime precipitation, and the precipitate is nodulized or sintered to form a high-grade manga¬nese oxide product."

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 13,730-acre Burnt Lodge (MT-065-278) Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The WSA is located in Phillips and Valley Counties, MT, about 55 miles south of Malta adjoining the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. It is underlain by near horizontal sedimentary beds of the Hell Creek Formation, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Bearpaw Shale. No mines or prospects were found in the WSA. Bentonitic beds were examined, but are generally less than 1 ft thick and, except where exposed, are deeply buried. Kaolin-bearing sandstone in the Colgate Member of the Foxhills Sandstone was sampled and may have potential for use in structural clay products. However, remoteness and inaccessibility of the area make it unlikely that the material could be economically extracted even though some of the material is marginally useful.
