A pair of silicon rubber replicas of size 250 mm by 250 mm, from a natural rock joint, was used to produce several high strength concrete fracture replicas of different sizes, from 50 mm by 50 mm to 200 mm by 200 mm. The morphology of the concrete fracture replicas were digitized at the laboratory using a 3D-laser-scanning machine with high accuracy and resolution. The scale dependency of the geometrical properties, including surface roughness and aperture, of the samples were investigated using fractal method. The investigation was extended to study the scale effect on the mechanical properties of the concrete fracture replicas. Four concrete replicas having same geometry from each sampling size were sheared under four different normal loads. The results show that normal and shear stiffness and peak shear strength decrease with increasing sample size and decreasing normal stress. It is concluded that for accurate determination of geometrical and mechanical properties of rock joints in the laboratory and field scales, samples with size equal to or larger than stationarity limit are required. Die Ergebnisse zeigen das sowohl Normal- und Schersteifigkeit als auch die Spitzenscherfestigkeit mit zunehmender Probengrösse und abnehmender Normalspannung abnehmen. Es hat sich gezeigt, daß für eine genaue Bestimmung der geometrischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften von Felsklüften im Labor und im Feld Proben einer Größe gleich oder größer des stationären Limits verlangt werden. La morphologie de ces répliques a été digitalisée au laboratoire à l’aide d’un laser-scanner 3D haute résolution et haute précision. L’influence de l’échelle des propriétés géométriques, incluant rugosité et ouverture, a été étudiée en utilisant la méthode des fractales. Des essais complémentaires ont été réalisés afin d’étudier l’effet d’échelle sur les propriétés mécaniques des répliques de fracture en béton. Quatre répliques béton de même géométrie pour les différentes tailles d’échantillons ont été cisaillées sous quatre valeurs de contrainte normale. Les résultats montrent que la rigidité normale et tangentielle ainsi que la résistance de pic diminuent en proportion de l’augmentation de la taille de l’échantillon et de la diminution des contraintes normales. On peut en conclure que, pour une détermination précise des propriétés géométriques et mécaniques des fractures au laboratoire et sur le terrain, des échantillons de taille égale ou supérieure à la limite stationnaire sont nécessaires.

For many years now electronic initiation has brought the time parameter to the centre of blast designs forever. Although this parameter existed before the era of electronic detonators, Blasting engineers or blasters could not directly handle it; technology imposed it. Only discrete values were available. Today, the fact that we can choose any detonation time for an explosive charge questions the viability of most of the rules applied for blast design. Thus, the very famous charge per delay method, that enables a level of vibration to be forecast at a given distance (“Chapot’s law”), is no longer necessarily valid when using electronic initiation. Therefore, it must be approached in a totally different manner. The KUZ-RAM formula, that allows fragmentation to be forecast, is also subject to the same distortion. The aim of this article is to show how the calculation laws used for blast design are influenced by the time parameter (sequence) and how we can efficiently make the most of this, in particular for vibrations. In constructing a financial model of a project significant effort is expended on capital and operating cost estimation, commodity price forecasts, and choice of discount rates while uncertainty in the primary input, the reserve, is often completely overlooked. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of uncertainty in the resource/reserve estimation process on the assessment of the financial performance of a project. Four qualitative processes have an impact on resource/reserve uncertainty. These stages are: 1.Ore definition 2.Geological interpretation 3.Resource estimation 4.Ore reserve estimation and mine planning. Each stage contains a number of tasks that may be considered as key performance activities (KPAs). Optimizing the manner in which these KPAs are completed can remove a great deal of uncertainty and error from the resource/reserve process. Examination of these KPAs within a company can also provide an insight to the quality of the information underlying the project. This will allow the company to identify any shortcomings in the data and to assess the resulting risks (Gilfillan, 1998). A hypothetical financial model based on a gold operation has been used to estimate the potential effect of resource/reserve uncertainty on revenue. Monte Carlo simulation has been employed to simulate a number of hypothetical scenarios: 1.a base case scenario which assumes no major errors or biases, but contains realistic margins for uncertainty that would exist in any project where work is being completed to the limit of best endeavours 2.a poor sampling scenario which assumes poor sampling practice and lack of understanding of sample preparation 3.a poor resource estimation scenario which assumes poor modelling and inappropriate choice of interpolation technique, and 4. a ?typical? scenario which represents a project where the majority of KPAs are not performed as best as they could be. The results show that realistic uncertainty ranges can generate changes in the estimate of potential revenue of plus or minus 30%.Therefore, it is important to allow for errors in these processes in any financial analysis or feasibility study. It is recommended that, when building a financial model, are view of relevant resource/reserve KPAs be carried out and appropriate ranges for uncertainty be applied to provide a range of potential outcomes. These outcomes can then be factored into the detailed cash flow analysis in order to ensure that technical uncertainty is built into financial decisions.

The Reclamation Program for the Northern Zone of the Indus Plains in West Pakistan involves the construction of 30,000 irrigation wells to serve 20 million acres with an annual pumpage of nearly 40 million acre-ft. Detailed hydrologic studies indicated that mild steel would be satisfactory for casing; however, within two years after construction, about 10% of the wells began to fail due to encrustation and corrosion of the casing. A search to find a noncor-rosive substitute for the steel casing disclosed that only fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipe satisfied all requirements. The results of initial use of fiberglass have been highly satisfactory and have resulted in a lower over-all well cost. Advances in technology pomise further reduction in prices and improvement in performance. The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc., of Denver, Colo., as engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. This program consists of the construction of about 30,000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for all cultivated lands. Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. Reduce the potential for injuries in underground mines by providing an alternative to manually lifting and holding heavy roof-support beams. The Problem I-beams, rail sections, and wooden cross-beams are often used in mine haulageways where extensive roof support is needed. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that many mines must resort to manually lifting, moving and installing these beams. Such manual-handling activities have the potential for causing injury to mine workers, particularly back injuries. I-beams used for roof support can typically weigh from 400-500 lbs. Rail sections weigh about the same as the I-beams. Wooden beams can weigh from 200 to 300 lbs. To lift a single beam usually requires the efforts of 3 to 5 mine personnel.

[ ] A period of heavy rains caused the river Adda to flood parts of the Valtellina, one of the Alpine valleys of Northern Italy. The exceptionally high waters put under considerable strain the whole system of embankments and levees controlling the river and protecting the adjacent towns and lands. In some places the water breached and washed away the embankments, submerging large tracts of cultivated land, buildings, roads and railway tracks. The town of Talamona, in the lower Valtellina, was hit particularly hard: in its proximity the river overrun and then washed away 300 m (1,000 ft) of embankment (see vicinity map, fig. 2), depositing large amounts of riverbed debris onto over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of fertile land.

Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. This interface will filter the data through a rules-based inference engine that will cross reference the various data streams, compare with past events and outcomes associated with the similar historical data and present this “intelligence” to

In response to the FY2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2764; Public Law 110?161), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued the final Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Rule (MRR). The rule, signed by the USEPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, on September 22, 2009, requires reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from large sources and suppliers in the United States, and is intended to collect accurate and timely emissions data to inform future policy decisions. The MRR will go into effect on January 1, 2010, and a report of the total emissions for calendar year 2010 will be due to the USEPA by March 31, 2011. Under the final MRR, suppliers of fossil fuels or industrial greenhouse gases, manufacturers of vehicles and engines, and certain facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more per year of GHG emissions are required to submit annual reports to the USEPA. The gases covered by the rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases as outlined in Table A-1 of Subpart A of the MRR, which is also provided in Appendix A of this report.

DURING my trip around the world last year, covering a total of 45,000 miles, I saw many things of especial interest from an engineering viewpoint. Sailing from New York, I went through the Panama Canal, down along the west coast of South America, then over the Peruvian and Bolivian Uplands; thence to the celebrated copper mines of Chile; across the Andes, to Buenos Aires, then to Rio Janeiro; across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal; through Spain to the Rio Tinto mines; across southern Europe to Italy; thence to Alexandria and Cairo; up the Nile to Assouan, to Palestine through the Suez Canal, Red Sea and across to Bombay; up to the country of the Moghul Emperors; then to Calcutta, from which point I shipped to Singapore, as having crossed the Equator twice, I wished to shake hands with it again; thence to Shanghai and Pekin; up to the Great Wall of China, back to Nanking and up the Yangtse to Hankow; then back and eastward across the Pacific Ocean. The climatic changes were sudden and severe; there was winter where, for me, it should have been summer and vice versa. The weather man was very kind, however, and until I was near the Aleutian Islands there were only three rainy days in a total of 220.

"The economic and strategic importance of PGE bearing deposits is fuelling renewed exploration and development efforts in the precious metals mining sector.This paper presents a review of the various techniques used in the processing of PGE bearing ores, from primary benificiation to processing routes for the different flowsheets that have been developed amongst current producers. Recent innovations such as preconcentration of ore using gravity separation, recent trends in flotation circuit design and the development of hydrometallurgical routes for the direct treatment of flotation concentrates without the need for smelting will be discussed. Data from recent projects will be presented to illustrate common characteristics of PGE ores and concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe six platinum-group elements (PGE): ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum, together with gold and silver, are considered to be ""precious"" metals. The recent spike in platinum and palladium prices coupled with the projected increase in demand for the metals has fuelled a spate of exploration and new projects in the PGE sector. Historically primary producers of PGE metals have controlled the flow of information relating to the mining and processing of these ores into the public domain. Very little published information relating to individual operations and processes is available in comparison to the abundant literature relating to other metals.The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of the issues relating to the processing of PGE ores. Each topic discussed could easily be the topic of a paper or book and so in many cases only the surface of the topic will be scratched. An attempt has therefore been made to provide as many references as possible.This paper discusses the classification and location of PGE ores, the mineralogical factors that affect recovery of PGE's, methods currently used for recovering PGE's and process trends in PGE metallurgy."

Objective To reduce dust generated from soiled floors within enclosed operator cabs. Background Enclosed operator cabs are widely used on mobile excavation equipment in the mining and construction industries. They protect the operator from bad weather, noise, and airborne dusts. The inside cab environment usually must be kept at very low dust concentrations because of quartz dust generated from the excavation of silica-bearing rock. For cabs to be effective in controlling airborne respirable dust, they must have an efficient air filtration system, while providing a positive pressurization of the cab interior. Ideally, the recirculated and exterior makeup air filtration should provide at least 99% capture efficiency for dust particles as small as 0.3-µmaerodynamic diameters. Many of these enclosed cabs use heating units mounted or directed along the floor (see figure 1), which can cause dust entrainment problems. Prior studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of enclosed cabs have shown that these floor heaters can generate notable amounts of dust within the cab enclosure (see Technology News 486). Multiple-shift dust levels measured inside a drill cab increased on average from0.04 mg/m3 during the summer months to 0.68 mg/m3 during the winter months. Additional dust level measurements, made with optical particle counters during a nondrilling time period, verified that dust levels inside the cab increased from 0.03 to 0.26 mg/m3when the floor heater/fan was turned on. Dust levels within the cab also became greater than the ambient air dust levels outside of the cab when the floor heater was turned on during the nondrilling time period. This shows that the floor heater was a notable dust source problem. Cab floors are commonly soiled from operators tracking dirt inside the cab upon entering from the mine or construction site. Interior cab dust levels can be increased by (1) airflow disturbance of the soiled floor or (2) operator disturbance of the soiled floor. Approach During prior NIOSH surveys of surface coal mine drills, several drills with very low cab dust levels (#0.1 mg/m3) were observed to have floor sweeping compound spread out over the cab floor during the working shift. This initial observation led to a more controlled A-B study of the effect of the sweeping compound on the interior cab dust levels. This study involved dust sampling with and without sweeping compound inside the cabs of a bulldozer and two drills. Sweeping compounds commonly use sawdust or cellulose as the main bulk material, with oil or wax added for dust adhesion purposes. Sand is sometimes added to increase bulk density. Sweeping compounds with sand are commonly used to sweep up concrete floors. Those without sand (usually referred to as "gritless") are used to sweep up smooth finished floors. Most of the oils and waxes used for the adhesive ingredient are petroleum-base and can have an irritating odor. People sensitized to petroleum distillates could have allergic reactions to these sweeping compounds. A few companies offer non petroleum-base sweeping compounds, using either a natural oil or chemical additive for dust adhesion. During this study, it was decided that only the gritless sweeping compound (without sand) would be used, eliminating the addition of another potential silica source inside the cab. Since the sweeping compound would be applied on the enclosed cab floor for the duration of the shift, it was decided to use a canola oil-base sweeping compound to eliminate irritating odor from the petroleum-base sweeping compounds. The natural canola oil-base sweeping compound had a slight woody scent. The three pieces of equipment used in this study had notably different cab layouts. The bulldozer had a small cab with vents discharging air-conditioned or heated air from adjustable louvers at operator waist level and floor level. The bulldozer also had a cloth fabric seat and a carpeted floor. Drill A had a large cab with the heat directed from adjustable louvers at operator knee level and the air-conditioned air directed from cabin ceiling louvers. This drill had a vinyl fabric seat and a steel plate floor. Drill B had a small cabin with the heat directed across the floor (see figure 1) and the air-conditioned air directed down from the ceiling. It had a vinyl fabric seat and a worn rubber mat on a steel floor.

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

"A methodology is proposed for milling flowsheet design using flotation rate, selectivity and residence time distribution data. The flotation rate data and the difference in flotation rates between the main minerals to be separated are determined from laboratory batch tests. The residence time distribution (RTD) data is calculated using the tanks-in-series model assuming each flotation cell is a perfect reactor. The rate, selectivity and RTD data can be used to calculate the optimum flotation cell number in a bank for rougher/scavenger in a commercial plant.This methodology is demonstrated in a case study of a nickel sulfide ore. It is shown that miniplant rougher/scavenger data can be closely predicted from a batch test using the proposed methodology.INTRODUCTIONIt has been the trend in the past several decades that large flotation cells are increasingly used. This is largely driven by the economics as ore grades are getting lower and the rate of ore processing must be increased in order to keep mining operations economically viable. The development and evaluation of 250 to 500 m3 WEMCO SmartCell and Outokumpu TankCell flotation machines are well in progress. There are many advantages in using large cells: fewer cells, less floor space, lower power cost (although this is now being questioned for fine particle flotation), simpler circuit, simpler control, and lower auxiliary equipment cost (Arbiter, 1999). As flotation cells are getting larger, the importance of cell hydrodynamics, namely, air/slurry dispersion, power intensity, froth transfer, residence time distribution (RTD) and short-circuiting are being fully recognized (Jonaitis, 1999; Weber, et al., 1999; Gomez and Finch, 2002). It is not the intention of this paper to discuss flotation cell scale-up. The intention is to answer what is the optimum number and size of cells in a flotation bank for a given throughput. Figure 1 illustrates this problem facing design engineers. The same mean residence time required for a given throughput can be achieved in a single large cell, or many smaller cells in a row. A few cells of large size may be more cost-effective but they may not be as effective as more cells of smaller size in achieving the optimum metallurgy."

Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Workpieces of up to 915-mm- (36-in.-) long with a 460-mm- (18-in.-)swing can be clad with stainless steel, Iconel or other exotic metals. Unplanned stope panel collapses occur on most near-surface and shallow mines in South Africa. Although these incidents often occur during blasting, they pose a major threat to the safety of underground workers and the economic extraction of orebodies. Most stope panel collapses occur due to excessive panel lengths (resulting in excessive stope spans) that are not designed according to a systematic design procedure or methodology. Instead, panel lengths are often dictated by the equipment in use and by previous experience under similar conditions. Hence, a rock engineering design methodology for the design of stable stope panels between pillars is of vital importance for optimum safety and production in shallow mining operations. Using the proposed design methodology described in this paper, rock mechanics practitioners and mine planners should be able to identify and quantify the critical factors influencing the stability of stope panels. The critical factors should then be used as input to the design of stable stope panels that will provide the necessary safe environment for underground personnel working in stopes. The proposed design methodology is an iterative process, which includes aspects such as rock mass characterization, estimation of rock mass properties, identification of potential failure modes, consideration of appropriate stability analyses and other elements of the rock engineering design process. This process continues after implementation. During monitoring, new data should be included in the database and the design process repeated on a regular basis. Design approaches included in the proposed design methodology include empirical methods such as different rock mass classification methods, analytical methods such as elastic and Voussoir beam analyses, kinematic analyses, probabilistic analyses, and numerical analyses. This study was performed to examine the feasibility of using seismic shear waves to detect the presence of abandoned coal mines. !he Antiquity Coal Mine near Antiquity, Ohio was used as a region of known voids. No attempt was made here to accurately locate the mine tunnels if detection was obtained. The results of this study were positive. Sharp changes in the amplitude of the received shear waves were clear indications of the presence of a fluid (gas or liquid) filled region between the source and receivers. When moving the source showed no change in the received signals it was concluded that the voids existed beneath the sensors. Prior to these tests drilling (SM-3) had determined that a void did exist in this area. This void was confirmed by this shear wave test and two additional voids were found.

The construction of a deep structural slurry wall in a restricted city centre location is always a challenging prospect. However, when the city is London and the site is bounded on two sides by high level canals and a main traffic highway on the third, the challenges are greater than usual. The paper discusses the design considerations required by the principal contractor to accommodate a single high level lateral support, value-engineered, bottom-up construction technique and the impact this had on the design detailing and construction of the slurry wall panels. This paper discusses the logistical challenges successfully overcome during the construction of 65,000sq ft of 40inch thick, 80ft deep structural slurry wall in the City of London. The paper reviews the benefits gained from using the state-of-the-art hydraulic grab and rotator system. Technological advances in computer instrumentation and real time monitoring were utilised to assist the grab operators in consistently delivering deviational control during excavation better than 1:200. With working space always at a premium on construction sites, the need for high quality, pre-fabricated reinforcement cages has never been greater. This paper reviews the argument for off-site fabrication of reinforcement members.
