The Bureau of Mines has recently collected two samples of crude oil from wells in the Greasewood Flat area of northeastern Colorado. Sample 31310 was taken from the Continental Oil Co.'s well Briggs No. 1 which care in or September 27, 1931, with a maximum production of 940 barrels per day. Sample 31311 was taken from tie Reiter-Foster Oil Co. Is well Ida Johnson No. 1 which came in on August 24, 1931 with a maximum production of approximately 1000 barrels per day.

"In 1998, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated an aggressive program to improve the performance of its Carol Lake Concentrator located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This program was termed the Concentrator Upgrade Program. The Concentrator Upgrade Program was a group of initiatives developed with the common goal of improving the overall process and operations of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator. The main goal of the program was to increase the annual production capacity of the concentrator from 18.0 million tomes to 21.6 million tomes. This gain in capacity was to be done mainly through improvements in process iron recovery. The target iron recovery value was 80+% versus a historical value of 70%. This improvement in iron recovery would translate to a natural weight recovery improvement from 44% to 50%.The Concentrator Upgrade Program provided the first opportunity in 30 years to make fimdamental changes to the concentrator flowsheet. To accomplish this, several pilot plants were built to evaluate new circuits. AAer 2 years, a new flowsheet was selected for the primary gravity separation circuit and the magnetite circuit. The centrepiece of the new flowsheet was the introduction of Hindered Settling Separators to the metallurgical process.The Concentrator Upgrade Program has since proceeded into detailed engineering and, as of February 2001, construction. The first one of IOCC’s 3 primary AG Mills (Mill 11) has been converted to the new flowsheet at the time of writing and is in the throes of commissioning. This paper will review the flowsheet development program in the pilot plant for the gravity separation circuit and examine the overall benefits to the operation of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator."

The Federal Bureau of Mines, under a contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., investigated the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of conveyor belts used in underground mines. This included the determination of smoke evolution, glow characteristics, char yields, and the identification and quantification of all volatile decomposition products in the form of gram of specific product formed per gram of belt sample tested. In addition to these investigations, degradation studies were conducted on some pure ingredients used in conveyor-belt formulations. Three basic classes of belts were investigated: neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and styrene-butadiene rubber compositions. The studies indicate that styrene-butadiene-based belts exhibit good flame resistance and are the least hazardous in regard to overall formation of toxic decomposition products. Under this program, thermogravimetric analysis was definitely established as a method of material differentiation.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Complex copper-lead-zinc ore is mined from underground workings high in the Western Cordillera of the Andes mountains about 100 km in a stralght line north of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. The Madrigal mine is situated in a steep-walled canyon into which the six operating levels "daylight". Production is from cut-and-fill stopes currently producing approximately 740 dry metric tons per day. The Santa Rosa vein, the most important producer in the district, outcrops for a distance of about 4 km, bearing N 75º W and dipping about 70º NE. In places the vein splits into two or three branches; widths of each vary between 1 and 4 m and total mineralized widths of up to over 8 m occur. Principal ore minerals are chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Ore reserve grades for the Madrigal mine average about 1.45% Cu, 2.6% Pb and 5.0% Zn, 2.9 ozAg per metric ton. Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

In response to the need for enhanced precautionary measures to safeguard mine workers in collieries from the consequences of methane ignitions in a heading, the coal mining industry has ex- pressed the desire for the development and testing of active on board suppression systems. As overseas systems cannot be used directly in the bord and pillar geometry it is necessary to adapt overseas and local technology to suit local mining conditions, as well as to test such developed systems for their compliance with the expressed needs. As the systems have to be tested in a specific roadway configuration, a facility was developed to enable the testing in South Africa. A surface test facility has been established which can be used to develop and test suppression systems on continuous miners and roadheaders. This facility consists of a tunnel wherein compliance tests can be conducted in simulated underground conditions. A number of methane explosion tests have been conducted in the test facility. The explosions conducted varied in CH,/air concentration (7,5 to 9 percent) and volume (26 to 88 m3). At lower concentrations there was a marked reduction in explosion strength and flame speed. Tests carried out with the Explostop system successfully suppressed the propagation of methane ignitions in both scenarios tested.

Gold and silver often occur finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite. The use of biological leaching to dissolve pyrite and liberate gold has been extensively studied for a concentrate from the Porgera deposit, Papua New Guinea. The successful operation of a continuous bioleach circuit has been demonstrated. Bioleach residues were cyanide leached to extract gold and silver, and unreacted pyrite recovered for recycle to the bioleach. A 26 day steady state continuous bioleach test on a concentrate assaying 14.3 g/tonne Au and 87.0 g/tonne Ag produced residues with an average 73.5% weight loss and a pyrite oxidation of 88%. Cyanidation and recovery of pyrite from the cyanide residues for recycle gave overall recoveries of 92.1% gold and 74.6% silver. A proportion of the remaining precious metals was found in the bioleach solutions and may be recoverable. Losses to tails were 3.0% gold and 8.1% silver. Final tails represented 14.3% of the feed weight and averaged 1.84 g/tonne Au. A description of the continuous bioleach circuit and bioleach residue handling procedures, and the results of the study are presented. The features and advantages of biological oxidation as a pretreatment for refractory precious metal ores and concentrates are discussed.

The Salobo Project will be the first Vale operation to use an HPGR mill to process copper-gold ore. The mine is located in Para state, southeast of the Amazon region in Brazil. The circuit was designed to treat 12 million metric tons per year of finely disseminated sulphide ore with high hardness. The comminution circuit comprises a gyratory primary crusher, secondary crushing utilizing two cone crushers, two 2 x 1.5 m HPGR operating in closed configuration with 6 mm screens, followed by two 26 x 40 ft ball mills. The concentration circuit consists of two rougher flotation stages using mechanical cells, regrinding with vertical mills, three cleaner stages with columns and one cleaner scavenger stage in mechanical cells. The concentrate is dewatered, filtered and transported by trucks and train to the port, to be exported. The circuit was designed on the basis of data obtained from a comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant campaign. The ore variability was assessed through simulation using data from a drilling core characterization program. The start-up of the industrial plant is planned for 2011. This paper describes the main aspects of circuit design, as well as information related to the beginning of the project construction.

This paper outlines the complete failure of the U.S. in status and relevance in Rare Earth Oxides (REO). Although rare earth oxides are strategic and critical in their own right, refining these REOs into elements and alloys is even more important for the development of "Green Technologies" and advanced weapons systems. America does not have an active domestic source of rare earth oxides. America does not have any heavy rare earth elemental or alloy capabilities. The magnitude of this failure continues to become more apparent as the manufacture of REO based electronics and magnetic components moves eastward towards China. China has succeeded in outmaneuvering the United States and the world in its quest to control the rare earth oxides, elements and alloys, and the many industries dependent upon REO. What can be done?

A floating gold dredge operating in coarse alluvial gravels of the Grey River on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, generated high concentrations of clay and colloidal particles in the dredge pond, which entered the groundwater system. Sampling was carried out at depths down to 20 m and it was found that variation of the length of the flow path occurred because of the movement of the dredge towards the piezometers. The alluvial gravels, the suspended sediments, the groundwater system and the water chemistry were all studied. Sediment concentrations were found to be highly variable with depth, but the relative concentrations in the depth profile were generally consistent as the flow distance shortened. The sediments were extremely fine and travelled further through the gravels than predicted. Comparison of field results with the available theory of deep filtration in clean beds of porous media gives some basis for estimating the behaviour of fine sediments in other alluvial systems

The vapor pressures of manganese in equilibrium with several alloys in the iron-manganese-carbon system between 1200° and 1275°K have been measured using the Knudsen effusion technique in conjunction with a vacuum microbalance. The effect of orifice area of the effusion cell upon the measured pressure has been determined. The binary iron-manganese system shows small negative departures from ideality, and the system of mixed carbides, (Fe, Mn)7C3, in equilibrium with graphite behaves ideally. THIS work is a continuation of the investigations in which the Knudsen effusion method has been used to determine thermodynamic activities in systems and at temperatures of interest to metallurgists. In a previous publication,' the free energy of formation of Mn7C3 was determined and some preliminary work on the solution behavior of this carbide with the hypothetical "Fe7C3" was reported. The present work deals with this latter topic and also includes data on the binary ir-on-manganese system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The Knudsen effusion method was used to measure the vapor pressure of manganese in both the alloy and carbide sections of this investigation. This dynamic method of vapor pressure measurement presents a problem when studying solid alloy systems in which one of the components has a much larger vapor pressure than the others. Over-all depletion of the alloy in the most volatile component will occur during evaporation so that the pressure of that component will decrease. Even more serious than the over-all concentration change is the surface depletion of volatile component in the alloy brought about by the slow rate of diffusion of this component from the interior to the surface of the solid particle. Since knowledge of this surface composition is necessary in order to relate it to the activity determined through the measurements, changes in surface composition from the analyzed bulk composition are to be avoided in dynamic vapor pressure studies of solid alloys. The system under investigation in this study presents the problem of surface depletion of manganese since its pressure at 1230°K is 105greater than iron and 1020 greater than carbon. Since the existence of a volatile manganese carbide had been ruled out previously,' the high manganese pressure relative to iron and carbon insured that the only species leaving the effusion cell was manganese. Therefore, the effusing species required no analysis so that the manganese pressure was determined directly from the weight loss of the effusion cell. In order to detect small weight losses near the beginning of effusion, a vacuum microbalance was used to weigh the cell continually. These initial weight loss data allowed the rate of manganese effusion to be determined before the surface of the alloy became depleted in manganese. A series of four coal combustion experiments was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to evaluate the response of fire sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. An optical path smoke sensor alarmed earlier than a point type diffusion mode ionization smoke sensor which alarmed prior to a CO alert value of 5 PPM above ambient. The presence of steady state diesel emissions resulted in a decrease in the optical smoke sensor analog output voltage signal by less than 1.4 pct for the three coal fire experiments in which a diesel engine was operating, whereas the ionization smoke sensor output decreased between 10.8 and 26.7 pct after the initial surge of the diesel engine. A commercial diesel discriminating fire sensor did not alarm for a fire in the one experiment for which it was used. The results of the experiments demonstrated that an optical path smoke sensor might be used to detect a coal fire under the experimental conditions considered of starting a diesel engine followed by a slowly developing coal fire.

A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program was used to model buoyancy induced Product-Of-Combustion (POC) spread from experimental fires in the National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), safety research coal mine. In one application, the CFD program was used to predict spread from fires in an entry under zero airflow conditions. At a location, 0.41 m below the entry's roof at a distance of 30 m from the fire, the measured smoke spread rates were 0.093 and 0.23 m/s for a 30 and a 296 kw fire, respectively. The CFD program predicted spread rates of 0.15 and 0.26 m/s based upon the measured fire heat production rates. Based upon a computation with [c3h3] as the hydrocarbon fuel, a predicted 5 PPM co alert time of 70 s at a distance of 30 m from the fire is to be compared with the measured alert time of 148 s. In a second application, the CFD program was used to analyze smoke flow reversal conditions, and the results were compared with visual observations of smoke reversal for 12 diesel fuel fires. The CFD predictions were in qualitative agreement with visual observations of smoke reversal.

Drill core is preferred as the sample material for metallurgical and mineralogical characterisation and flowsheeting of an orebody. The question arises as to how to do this at the economic optimum, since geologists have several other strategic uses for their drill core. The limiting factors are the cost of extra drilling for the metallurgical testwork and the need to preserve the drill core record. In this study, the representative sampling of drill core at an economic optimum for metallurgical testing is addressed. This phase of the drill core work is preceded by earlier drill core characterisation - for which other appropriate sampling protocols are used - that has provisionally categorised the orebody into geometallurgical units. In stratified sampling of drill core, use is made of a version of the stratified approach to compound distributions proposed by Cochran in 1946. Use is made of Gy’s 50-piece minimum sample mass model to estimate minimum requisite sample mass. In the case where sampling and testwork are required on a Lifeof- Mine blend of a given ore deposit, whereby defined ore types or geometallurgical units are present, the sample mass requirement is significantly reduced by working from drill-core at the geometallurgical unit level. A case study using Raglan drill core is discussed. Using nickel as an indicator paymetal, and sampling at a fundamental variance level of 8%, the minimum sample masses for disseminated sulphides, net-textured sulphides, and massive sulphides are 3.80, 7.37 and 4.39 kg respectively. When the same drill-core is sampled as a Life-of-Mine mixture without knowledge of the geometallurgical units, the minimum sample mass increases to 84.28 kg. It is thus possible to assemble a representative Life-of-Mine sample of drill-core more economically, at the same time validating its representativity. Equivalent calculations for copper, platinum and palladium are discussed, with outcomes consistent with this finding. When all four paymetals are considered, one selects the largest minimum mass out of all four cases. This results in minimum sample masses of 11.67, 74.90 and 175.16 kg for disseminated sulphides, net-textured sulphides and massive sulphides respectively. The simulated Life-of- Mine blend would require a minimum sample mass of 377.33 kg to cover all four paymetals.

"This paper presents results of a study undertaken to determinethe feasibility of mining plains overburdens with bucket wheel excavators. Based on extensive geotechnical testing of overburdens under study, the relations between material geotechnical properties and its cuttability were defined. The properties with the highest correlations to the cuttability werethen used to develop the material diggability classification. This classification may be used for identification of overburdens and coals mineable by bucket wheel excavators.IntroductionLow cost of mining and high productivity can be achieved when mining unconsolidated soils and soft rocks with bucket wheel excavators. As a result this mining equipment will likely be introduced into plains coal mines. At present there are plans to use a bucketwheel excavator (BWE) in at least one mine by the end of this decade. Unfortunately, the performance of a BWE deteriorates rapidly with the increasing strength of mined material. To avoid costly misapplication, material diggability must be defined in advance of an application (i.e. the force required at the cutting edges of BWE buckets must be quantified). Correct definition of material diggability permits reliable selection of a BWE, or may indicate unsuitability of this equipment for a particular application.The reported studyu i was undertaken to investigate the diggability of typical prairie overburdens and thus provide a guidance for likely future applications of bucketwheel equipment. Investigations concentrated on the parts of overburden most likely to create problems for a BWE mining. These are defined in Table 1. At present, thin layers of the two investigated materials (samples K and L) are mined by a BWE in an oil sand mine, after being loosened by blasting."

The South African mines health and safety regulations require that mine management establish a quality management system for rock support material. Quality control of resin capsules used as a support medium in South Africa is specified under SA National Standards No 1534. Experience has shown that this specification, while addressing the chemical and physical aspects of the products, but does not address the required performance criteria. In order to address this shortcoming, the industry has put a lot of emphasis on short encapsulation pull tests, performed insitu, in the underground workings of the mine. This is also fraught with many shortcomings, particularly as regards site availability, cost and repeatability of results. To try and address these issues, the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Pretoria University were approached to develop equipment and machinery that could produce reliable, repeatable results in a laboratory environment which reasonably simulates installation practice underground. The test method is based on the ASTM F432-95 Strength Index test, but modified to use push test rather than pull tests. The paper describes development of the test method and the preliminary results and findings of the work.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. This report describes a study of the factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) and high voltage (1001 - 7500 volts) trailing cable couplers for use in underground coal mines to connect trailing rabies. Improvements in quality, dependability, and safety of medium and high voltage couplers are presented in the form of requirements for couplers. The results of an investigation of high voltage trailing cable coupler design and of whether trailing cable couplers must have a metallic shell as required by CFR 30 part 75.805 are presented. Conclusions and recommended research programs are included that describe the present situation and future development approaches.
