A method of calculating formation water resistivities from chemical analyses is presented which is somewhat faster and more accurate than previously described methods. For 26 formation water samples taken from wells in the Texas Gulf Coast, the average deviation of calculated from measured water resistivities was 3.3 per cent, with an average bias of + l.l per cent in the calculated values. This compares with average deviations of 4.6 per cent and 7.8 per cent, with corresponding average biases of +3.2 per cent and -6.3 per cent, for the two methods previously described in the litera-

TOF-SIMS was used to detect, identify from parent molecular ions and determine the relative concentrations of collectors sorbed on the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from three Canadian concentrators. In the Kidd Creek Zn circuit, sphalerite lost to tailings carried on average a quarter of the amount of isobutyl xanthate present on that recovered to Zn concentrate; amyl xanthate, which is not reported as added to the circuit, was also detected on floated sphalerite and pyrite. At Brunswick, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tailings had ten times less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate than those recovered to the Zn final concentrate, while both xanthates were detected on sphalerite floated to the Cu-Pb cleaner circuit. At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isopropyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the final Zn concentrate than on that lost to the Zn rougher tailings

The purpose of this book is to provide an indication of what good hoisting practice is and how it might be achieved. To this end the book contains discussions of equipment and inspection and maintenance procedures developed and used by mining people in striving for safe, reliable hoisting equipment. Most of this information comes from domestic practice; the rest is foreign, notably from Canada. Most things discussed have long proved their general worth, and others promise to; a few are beginnings. However, nothing is conjectural or theoretical; the practices described herein are in use somewhere in the mining world. The stress is on equipment in use; it is not a design-guidelines manual. Nevertheless, there are some sections dealing with design material since it may be of value in a maintenance/ replacement sense. Mine hoisting installations encompass such a wide variety of equipment and conditions that it is impractical to specifically cover them all. This book mainly treats conventional systems using conventional components with some discussion of the more common unconventional (special) systems in use. There is no recognized definition for a "conventional" mine-hoisting system. Herein the term means those systems most commonly used in daily operations for transporting men, materials, and product-electrically driven drum and friction hoists, with guided conveyances running in vertical or inclined shafts. Beyond this, what "conventional" means is probably best illustrated by the topics discussed.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and biodiesel fuels are two of the most promising technologies available to the mining industry to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). A study has been conducted to estimate the potential of DPF systems and biodiesel blends to reduce DPM emissions from production vehicles. Results of testing three DPF systems in an isolated zone showed 88% to 99% reductions in elemental carbon concentrations. The test results also show that biodiesel blends, B20 and B50, reduced the elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by 26 and 48 percent, respectively.

A data bank on bolter technology was assembled which included state-of-the-art industrial equipment as well as new equipment currently under development for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This information was augmented by field visits to selected USBM contractors, mine operators and others for the purpose of obtaining a thorough understanding of present coal mine roof bolting safety and productivity problems. These direct contacts provided valuable insight regarding requirements for new bolting equipment necessary to assure wide user acceptance. Using this background material and information, a series of roof bolter concepts was developed offering improved operator safety with minimum impact on productivity. The concepts developed utilize existing componentry and technology wherever possible. All of the concepts feature a fully protected operator station located 6' to 10' outby the active bolt line and the hazardous rotating machinery.

US 4,190,434 - In the thermal production of magnesium metal, a mixture of calcined dolomite, an iron- silicon-aluminum alloy as a reductant, and residual slag from the production of ferrochromium is smelted to evolve magnesium vapor, which is then condensed. The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) features two 20 TeV counter rotating proton beams which will be housed in 87 km (54 miles) of tunnel. Four additional lower energy particle accelerators will be housed in 26 km (16 miles) of tunnel and underground structures. Physics experiments will be conducted in two underground detector halls approximately 67 m (220 feet) deep with footprints measuring about 30 m (100 feet) by 100 m (330 feet). Definition and design of underground facilities is advanced with construction of approximately one-third of the SSC program underway. This paper presents an overview and status of the SSC project.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath midocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and om, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100 000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50 000 years prior to eruption.

The blast design is often adjusted in efforts to optimize the effectiveness of the blasts’ explosive energy while minimizing costs. The REP experiment is part of the research programme conducted by Andra to investigate the possibility of reversible radwaste disposal in a Jurassic (Callovo-Oxfordian) argillite formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground laboratory site in northeastern France. The experiment focuses on the hydromechanical response of the formation to sinking the laboratory access shaft. Modelling of boreholes and shaft sinking operations has helped to optimise measurement point locations based on initial stress tensor anisotropy, while minimising interaction between instrument boreholes. Analyses were made of model sensitivity to intrinsic rock characteristics, hydromechanical coupling properties and sensor installation procedures. L’expérimentation REP fait partie du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire engagé par l’Andra pour étudier la possibilité d’un stockage réversible des déchets radioactifs dans la formation Callovo-Oxfordienne des argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne (Commune de Bure - France). Cette expérimentation permettra d’étudier la REponse hydromécanique de la formation aux sollicitations engendrées par le fonçage du Puits d’accès du laboratoire souterrain de recherche. Afin d’optimiser le positionnement des points de mesures, compte tenu de l’anisotropie du tenseur des contraintes initiales, et de minimiser les interactions entre les forages d’instrumentation, des modélisations des forages et du creusement du puits ont été conduites. Des analyses de sensibilité aux caractéristiques intrinsèques de la roche, aux propriétés de couplage HM et aux protocoles d’installation des capteurs ont été faites. Die REP-Untersuchung ist Teil des multidisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das die ANDRA im Callovo-Oxfordian-Tonstein in situ am Standort Meuse/Haute Marne (Gemeinde Bure – Frankreich) im Hinblick auf eine Eignung zur reversiblen Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle durchführt. Dabei soll das hydro-mechanische Verhalten der Formation auf die Beanspruchungen, die durch das Abteufen des Zugangsschachts zum Untertage-Forschungslabor erzeugt werden, untersucht werden. Zur optimalen Positionierung der Messpunkte unter Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie des Tensors der Ausgangsspannungen und zur Minimierung der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Instrumentierbohrungen wurden ein Schachtabteuf- und Bohrmodelle entwickelt. Zur Untersuchung der inhärenten Eigenschaften des Gesteins, des gekoppelten HM-Verhaltens und der Installationsprotokolle der Messsonden wurden Sensibilitätsanalysen durchgeführt.

In the last years, supported gold catalysts with particle sizes smaller than 10 nm have attracted a lot of attention. While gold bulk metal is rather inert in chemical reactions and, thus, is of low interest for catalysis, highly dispersed gold particles supported on oxides as TiO2 or ZrO2 show surprisingly high activities in some reactions important for the chemical industry. The oxidation of carbon monoxide at low temperatures is mainly used as model reaction to study the unusual properties of gold catalysts [1]. On the other hand, to evaluate the catalytic potential of gold, other chemical reactions which allow to control also the selectivity have to be considered. The selective hydrogenation of ???-unsaturated aldehydes to allylic alcohols is of both commercial relevance (e.g. in fine chemical and pharmaceutical intermediate production) and specific scientific interest [2]. Note that thermodynamics favors hydrogenation of the C=C over the C=O group (stronger negative free reaction enthalpy of 35 kJ/mol), and for kinetic reasons the C=C bond is more reactive than the C=O group. Thus, in the presence of most of the conventional hydrogenation catalysts, based on Pt, Rh or Pd, -unsaturated aldehydes such as acrolein and crotonaldehyde are hydrogenated predominantly to the saturated aldehydes and only to a minor extent to unsaturated alcohols. Therefore, it is desirable to find catalysts which are able to control the intramolecular selectivity by hydrogenation preferentially the C=O group while keeping the olefinic double bond intact (Fig. 1).

A feeder is used to control the gravity flow of bulk solids from storage areas, like a bin or a stockpile. For this type of application, it is important to select a proper drive that can fulfill all of the demands put on it. High starting torque capacity, variable speed and the ability to handle frequent starts and stops are some of the demands that the drive must be able to meet. The following is a comparison of the most common type of drives used today for feeder applications. When a feeder is started, the breakaway torque may reach as high as200% of the running torque. The accelerating torque usually is set to protect the carrying element of the feeder, like the belt for the belt feeder and the carrying chain of the apron feeder (Fig. 1).

The feasibility of using the nucleation properties of combustion generated particulates for the identification of their sources was investigated, using the Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Spectrometer. The Investigated materials included coal, wood, belt materials, electrical insulation, brattice cloth, and diesel exhaust. The materials were heated In an oven using filtered air flow, and their time, temperature, and the critical supersaturation spectrum of condensation nuclei (also referred to as the CCN spectrum) produced by the combusting material were recorded. Some data was obtained on a typical metal-mine background containing blasting products. The data was processed and analyzed In an attempt to specify parameters and limits that would allow the identification of the combustion sources. It appears that under controlled test conditions It Is possible to Identify the source on the basis of data derived from the CCN spectrum. More general use of the Idea for fire detection under uncontrolled practical circumstances in an actual mining environment does have potential but would require further research.

The bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on April 19, 1995, has once again renewed public debate surrounding the availability and use of explosives in the United States. In the past, Congressional review of explosives regulation has generally followed tragic events such as the bombing of Pan American World Airways Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988; the February 26, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City; and the delivery of six package bombs to members of one family in several western New York communities, killing five people, on December 23, 1993.
