Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

Natural bornite (Cu5FeS4) leached in ferric chloride or in sulfuric or hydrochloric acid solutions with oxygen showed several differences. In ferric chloride 80 of the copper was leached in two stages. The first (30 copper removal) requiring one minute was controlled by mixed kinetics (liquid ferric ion diffusion and chemical surface reaction). The second was controlled by formation of a surface sulfur layer and then diffusion through the sulfur. With oxygen in sulfuric acid reaction was slow and only the first stage was studied. Copper removal had an induction period. The bornite structure disappeared at 12% copper removal (also found with ferric chloride) and covellite formed on the surface with a species inside the particles having an x-ray structure similar to CuFeS2 but with composition Cu3FeS4 (also with ferric chloride). Copper removal was controlled by iron dissolution. Surface iron vacancies filled with Cu+ to give CuS while interior copper dissolution produced Cu3FeS4. Preliminary results with oxygen and hydrochloric acid showed 80% copper removal and sulfur as end products (similar to ferric chloride).

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

The experience of the past 2 years has demonstrated clearly that mine explosions with heavy loss of life can be prevented. The investigations of the Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines disclose that during the fiscal year 1934 there were only 28 deaths from mine explosions in the United States, and during the fiscal year 1935 there were 54 deaths, a very favorable reduction when compared with an average death toll of 265 from this cause during the 20-year period prior to 1929. Although the frequency of occurrence of explosions has not decreased greatly during the past 7 years, there has been a marked decrease in severity, indicating that the coal-mining industry is taking more effective precautions to prevent the spread of explosions. A number of large coal-producing States, which in past years have experienced numerous disastrous explosions, have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as much as 5 years or even longer. A study of several hundred mine explosions occurring in the United States during the past 10 years or more indicates that the factors mainly responsible for these explosions are inadequate or defective ventilation and disregard of the hazards from explosive gas. Both of these factors are subject to control, and if controlled it is safe to say that deaths from explosions would be reduced to a negligible number as relatively few explosions are now initiated by dust.

The Estonia Mine, operated by Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS (EEK), the mining division of the Estonian Government's energy company, Eesti Energia AS, is a large room and pillar mine located in Eastern Estonia. It supplied approximately 4.9 Mt/a of oil shale in financial year ending 2010, which is used for electricity and shale oil generation. Due to the Estonian climate and the power station's need for a dry product, Estonia Mine has developed a planning system where short-term demands of the power stations dictate the schedule. Such an arrangement requires maximising flexibility and consequently the mine only operated for 199 days in 2010.The footprint plays a key role in achieving mass mining rates as the 12 km + 12 km lease area allows the mine to split into mining districts that act independently of each other and maximise the number of work areas available. Coupled with this, the geology of the mine is relatively homogenous over the mining lease, simplifying the mine design and production methods.During the last five years, EEK has commissioned a comprehensive conveyor network. Consequently, material handling only requires loaders to dump oil shale direct from the production face onto a chain conveyor that feeds the conveyor network that ultimately supplies the enrichment plant. Dewatering is also of critical importance, with 90 Mm3 of water discharged annually. EEK uses large trenches up to 3.5 m deep and 1.2 m wide to channel groundwater. Track mounted mechanical saws are used to cut slots in the floor, to control overbreak in blasting these trenches.EEK has introduced Salzgitter Machinenbau GB 280S auger drills that drill three 280 mm diameter holes simultaneously. This has improved void hole drilling times and reduced the drilling required for each face, reducing the overall production cycle time. Blasting activities have also been decoupled from other mining activities negating the need for firing times through the use of small independent firings, required to control vibrations.

Sensor-based ore sorting is being increasingly used to reduce the amount of low-grade and waste material processed in mineral concentrators. This type of preconcentration provides bottom-line benefits to users by reducing the amount of energy, water and consumables, as well as reducing capital cost. Existing operations can increase metal production, while previously uneconomic deposits and low-grade stockpiles can also be exploited. The technology can also be used to separate ore types for selective processing. The path to implementing sensor-based sorting may include:• geometallurgical evaluation• first inspection testing to investigate sensor response• bench-scale testing where sensor selection is not obvious or for difficult applications• performance testing in full scale sensor-based sorting machines• larger scale site-based piloting with a temporary semi-mobile plant installation. Sorting requires material to be suitably prepared and presented to the machines and typically this consists of crushing and screening to limit top size and optimise liberation. However, where material streams are suitably sized and prepared, additional equipment may not be required (e.g. the sorting of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Mill pebble streams).This paper presents a case study of economic upgrading of gold ore, by preconcentrating with sensor-based ore sorting. The case study examines sorting amenability, test work, the feasibility study through to implementation, with associated flow sheet development. The development process is analysed and evaluated with a view to rationalising the process for development of future projects. Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (RPZC) identified implementing a Mineral Resource Management (MRM) programme at the mine as a strategic incentive. The purpose of the programme is to optimize the economic value of the RPZC mineral resource, over the total value chain of the mine, taking expected macro economic conditions into consideration as well. With Mineral Resource Management still being a relatively young drive in the mining industry, information on the concept is relatively scarce. RPZC had several successes and problems with implementing such a concept and also still has a way to go before a complete Minerals Resource Management approach is implemented at the mine and entrenched as a working culture. This paper presents that the bearing capacity installed through each method is considerably higher than that of cylindrical pile without nodules. I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. Recent studies by the authors into the behaviour of jointed rock masses using direct shear testing have confirmed that joint spacing has a significant effect on rock mass strength. The rock mass failure envelopes assessed from these tests have been compared to failure envelopes obtained using the Hoek-Brown GSI criterion. Good agreement between measured and estimated GSI strength envelopes where obtained when joint spacing was considered in the assessment of GSI. Les études récentes conduites par les auteurs sur le comportement des joints rocheux employant l'essai direct de cisaillement ont confirmé que l'espacement a un effet significatif sur la force de la masse rocheuse. Les enveloppes de ruptures obtenues pour ces essais ont été comparées à l'enveloppe de rupture obtenue en utilisant le critère GSI Hoek-Brown. Une bonne corrélation a été constatée entre les enveloppes obtenues expérimentalement et les enveloppes calculées par la méthode GSI quand l'espacement des joints a été pris en considération dans l'évaluation de GSI. In German hardcoal mining approximately 1 or 2 cases of spontaneous combustion are recorded per 10 million tonnes of saleable output. In approximately every 20th spontaneous combustion case, CH, is ignited. By the example of a fire caused by spontaneous combustion on Friedrich Heinrich colliery, an overview on the measures taken for firefighting and explosion prevention is given. These measures comprise (in sequential order) - early fire detection by CO-monitoring, - gob-sealing measures against ventilation air leaks, - full-space inertization of the coalface subsequent to a CH,- deflagration, - installation of a target inertization of the caved-in gob under the protection of the full-space inertization, - re-opening of the fire zone and reestablishment of the ventilation-air current, - completion of the salvaging work with continued target inertization of the caved-in gob and further sealing measures (monolithic packing), - sealing of the coalface after salvaging. The measures described allowed gain of control of a safety- critical (because close to the face) gob fire caused by spontaneous combustion, in spite of a CH, deflagration, within few days only, and salvaging of equipment from that coalface and start-up of the follow-up coal-face on schedule. The measures taken as well as the experiences gained allow deduction of general safety criteria for fighiing of gobfires caused by spontaneous combustion, and for controlling the explosion risk. e.g. - warning and alert thresholds for early detection of fires, - criteria for spotting of the zone of fire, - rules for tightening caved-in gobs, - thresholds for the retreat of firefighting crews from the vicinity of the zone of fire, and for starting ineiization, - considerations for positioning of and strength requirements for stoppings with/without inertization, - flow-by-volume adjustment of inertization, - safety rules for work with respiratory apparatus in the inertized zone, - safety rules for the re-opening of zones of fire. The considerations end up in the conclusions that the duration in terms of months of the classic cycles of sealing, waiting, and reopening can nowadays be reduced to a few days only by purposeful combination of full-space inertization and locally confined tar- get inertization of the gob area. The earlier high risks incured by the mine resuce squads en- trusted with sealing of zones of mine fires under explosion hazards can be reduced by the method described, provided the safety regulations are conformed with. In this way, intertizing contributes substantially to reduction of down-time caused by mine fires, to preservation of recoverable parts of the deposit, and to improved safety of the fire-fighting crews.

For many tunneling, deep shaft and deep excavation projects ground freezing is one of the best if not the only technique available to create a watertight and load bearing temporary support system in soft ground conditions. When appropriate attention is given to the details of the ground freezing system design, ground freezing is a very safe method and is economically viable with competing techniques and combinations of techniques. Recent innovative uses of the technique in Europe are highlighted in this paper and compared with current uses in North America.

Valley Camp No. 3 mine was the scene of an experimental shortwall introduced in 1973 in an attempt to improve the recovery from the Pittsburgh coalbed in the Ohio Valley area where adverse ground conditions have imposed partial extraction methods with only 40 to 55 percent recovery of the valuable resource. The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Valley Camp Coal Co., monitored ground pressures and caving in the shortwall section in an effort to determine whether the roof strata, notably the limestone main roof, will cave to the extent that roof pressures at the face are relieved and whether the powered roof supports can sustain the roof load. The Bureau's efforts included mapping of clay veins, instrumentation of chain pillars and shortwall panels with encapsulated pressure cells, recording hydraulic pressures in the legs of the shortwall chocks, and core drilling underground and from the :surface. The experimental shortwall was a qualified success. Recovery increased 5.4 percent compared with partial extraction. Pressures in chain pillars and the abutment zone were not excessive. Hydraulic pressures in the chock legs did not approach the yielding pressure. Apparently, the limestone strata caved and the roof pressure at the face was relieved.

The New Zealand Minerals Industry is small but growing. Over the next 10 years it will be facing stiff international competition for skills to support this growth, particularly from Australia who are forecasting that a further 70 000 people will be employed by 2015.   The value of commodities mined and quarried in NZ continues to increase; and the value of coal, metals and industrial minerals production reached $1.505 billion in 2006, an increase of 15 per cent on 2005. Production increases will continue à. Latest Crown Minerals statistics show that national prospecting and exploration expenditure rose to $29.9 million in the year ended March 31 2006 û an increase of 46 per cent from the $20.4 million spent in the March 2005 year. The equivalent 2001 year expenditure was only $2.48 million.   The industry already experiences difficulty in recruiting the people it needs with ongoing demand for skilled underground miners, trades people, and mining professionals. This discussion paper will outline the national context with regard to labour, skills and training. It will suggest options and provide an opportunity for conference participants to discuss the way forward.

The geometry of an explosive is known to have a fundamental effect on the resulting shock wave propagation. Typically researchers use a spherical or hemispherical geometry in order to simplify the shock wave so that resultant overpressure and impulse are uniform in all directions. The goal of this research is to understand the overpressure characteristics from a sheet explosive, a geometry often utilized for breeching in the military. In training alone, soldiers can be exposed to several tests per day, which may be contributing to the prevalence of blast induced mild traumatic brain injuries. Using PCB pressure transducers and high speed video, it was found that as the angle departed from normal (perpendicular) to the face of the sheet explosive, the over pressure decreased significantly. When in line with the plane, a decrease of over pressure by as much as 20% was observed. Time of arrival was roughly 20% faster directly in front of the charge with a pressure amplification of 46% relative to a spherical baseline charge of the same mass. This testing may reveal a more complete relationship between the pressure and angle from the explosive that could have applications for military and law enforcement with respect to best practices on blaster location for reduced over pressure exposure.

Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. This is accomplished by the simultaneous solution of two partial differential equations describing the pressure in Regions I and 11. Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage).
