Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating technologies that could be used to detect objects, small vehicles, and pedestrian workers that may be in the blind areas of haulage equipment used in mining and construction. A detection system that warns the equipment operator that there is an obstacle nearby could prevent collisions and save many lives each year. One popular technology for collision warning systems is radar. Several different types of radar have been tested in the laboratory and on mining equipment. Early in the study, questions arose concerning the best way to test radar systems. Many factors affect the performance of radar, including the size, shape, and composition of the object that is to be detected; the height of the radar antenna(s); and the relative motion of the radar system and/or object. This report discusses several different test procedures and test targets and recommends methods to determine how effective a radar system will be in detecting a person near heavy equipment.

Refractory/metal interactions and associated reactions are significant during casting as they can lead to inclusion formation. High-temperature interactions between aluminosilicate refractories and molten steel were studied in the present investigation using the sessile drop method. The changes in the contact angles between molten iron with well-defined oxygen levels and substrates of silica, mullite (3Al2O3?2SiO2) as well as commercial refractories were measured in the dynamic mode. In all cases, the reaction led to slag formation. The experiments were performed under isothermal conditions at 1823 and 1873 K. A known and constant oxygen partial pressure was imposed above the iron drop, through appropriate CO-CO2-Ar mixtures. For all substrates, the contact angles started decreasing due to the lowering of the surface tension of iron, as oxygen was imposed on to the system. When a critical level of oxygen was reached, slag started forming at the drop/substrate interface and at this stage, the contact angle dropped suddenly. Subsequent behaviour of silica and mullite was observed to be different, with SiO2showing a non-wetting behaviour. In the case of SiO2substrate, there were also deep erosions along the periphery of the drops and there was slag accumulation at the sides of the metal drop, probably due to Marangoni flow and/or SiO(g) formation. SEM and EDS analysis of the substrates revealed that the formed slag was fayalite. The thermodynamic criteria for slag formation and possible mechanisms of the reaction are discussed in the light of the experiments. Geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) is a kind of waterproofing material used widely in engineering. The waterproof mechanism is understood in terms of bentonite particles becoming a water-obstructcolloid layer after they absorb water and swell. The swell stress, however, has not been determined directly till now. In our experiment, the swell stresses of the GCL under saturated and water absorbing conditions are measured directly using a custom-made instrument. The results show that (1) the instrument designed by the authors performed satisfactorily and the test results are reproducible; and, (2) The trend line of swell stress variation with time can be divided into three segments. The first segment is characterized by a quick increase of the swell force in the first 0?50 hours. The swell stress increases by 7.00×10-4?1.00×10-3 Mpa / hour. The second segment shows a slow increase of the swell stress during the 50?1730 hours. The swell force increases by 7.54×10-6?2.02×10-5Mpa / hour. The third segment is characterized by little variation in the swell stress after 1730 hours. In this segment, the average value of the swell stress measurements is 0.0719Mpa and the maximum value is 0.0729Mpa. It is suggested that the swell stress is mainly raised by water entering the pores among montmorillonite particles and the interstitial layers in individual montmorillonite crystals, leading to an increase in volume and manifested as a stress on the surrounding materials.

This report includes a review of all relevant data on underground hydraulic coal mining technology collected during Phases I and II of the contract. Data collection and analysis procedures are discussed. Information is included on past and existing underground hydraulic coal nines in the USSR (27 mines), Poland (1 mina), Germany (1 mine), Japan (1 mine), Canada (1 mine), China (1 nine), as well as underground tests conducted in the United Kingdom (2 mines), and in the United States (5 mines). Data is also included on Czechoslovakia and New Zealand. In all operational hydraulic mines, coal is transported underground in flumes. In most cases, bituminous coal is broken by monitors with nozzle diameters larger than 16 mm (0.63 in.) and jet pressures of 50 to 125 atm (710 to 1780 psi). Technical design and performance data are included on all key types of equipment and components which have been developed for, used in, or which could be potentially be used in hydraulic coal mining systems. Data sheets are presented on 180 types of equipment, divided into 24 major categories. Where available, sketches, drawings, photographs, and price estimates are included. Data are included on pitching coal seams in the United States which potentially can be mined by hydraulic methods. Preliminary conclusions are presented, subject to revision as a result of economic feasibility studies to be completed during Phase III. An outline is presented of the final report, which will include economic studies and recommendations for research and development.

A mineral purvey of the Granite Chief RARE II area (A5-261), covering about 23,400 acres (9,470 ha) of Tahoe National Forest and the Like Tahoe Management Unit, was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1979 and 1980 (fig. 1). The investigation by the Bureau of Mines indicates that the area has a low potential for mineral resources. Samples taken from prospect pits and favorable outcrops indicate no minable quantities of precious or base metals. Placer deposits are too small and low grade to be considered a resource.

A popular rule in the mining industry is that a property should only be developed if average unit production cost is less than a given proportion of the estimated long-run price of the mineral. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the average cost approach (ACA) with the use of net present value (NPV) as an investment criterion. It is concluded that the ACA is an easily understood and easily applied rule of thumb which may serve as a rough first screening device, for example in the early stages of deposit exploration. Its operational convenience is at the expense of accuracy and validity, and the NPV provides a sounder method of making decisions, especially in the case of marginal deposits.

Open caissons are used for many geotechnical engineering applications. Open caissons may be used as deep foundation elements bypassing weak soils to tip in firm deeper strata, and in rivers and maritime construction to reduce the risk of scour. Open caissons are also used for collecting sewage water through gravity sewer pipe networks or from sewer force mains. In such applications, the design and construction of open caissons require a detailed soil investigation program. In this way, the design and construction plan of an open caisson can be developed with full knowledge of the prevailing subsoil conditions. The engineering and construction techniques are key factors to achieve functional caissons. Based on close observations during construction stages, the current study presents some challenges that were encountered during the construction of two open caissons of internal diameters 20 m and 10 m (65.6 ft and 32.8 ft). This paper describes the procedure followed to alleviate the construction difficulties encountered. Site exploration program and control measures required to satisfy design and construction requirements are crucial aspects. Sinking of open caissons in dense or very dense sands is risky. Incorrect sinking of open caissons may cause extra cost, delay in construction, and harm to nearby structures. Air/water jetting near the cutting edge of an open caisson, outside slurry trench, and/or inside open trench may be used to drive an open caisson downward. Unsymmetrical work around an open caisson may lead to tilting of the caisson. If this occurs, the tilt should be immediately corrected before resuming the sinking process. Improper cleaning of fine materials on the caisson?s excavation bed, and/or inappropriate pouring of underwater concrete may result in a defective concrete seal. The paper contains a series of practical guidelines to assist those intending to use open caissons, and shares good caisson sinking practice with practitioners. Finally, the study aims to understand the difficulties encountered and to anticipate future problems.

The Bureau of Mines used portable infrared scanners to examine the surface of pillars and faces in the Somerset mine near Somerset, Colo. Zones of temperature buildup, indicative of potential combustion, were detected with the scanners; their existence was verified by temperature measurements with conventional instrumentation. Temperatures of 32° to 6° C were measured on surfaces with normal temperatures of 26° to 35° C. The infrared instruments and techniques appeared to offer a rapid and efficient method for locating potential trouble spots in mines susceptible to fires caused by spontaneous combustion.

Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler's performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of -43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world's first FW/BENSONTM vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 x 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

"The purpose of this paper are (1) to present a broad picture of the recognized methods of measuring the various forms of atmospheric pollution; (2) to evaluate the significance of such measurements; and (3) to suggest suitable methods for obtaining comparative information on the concentration of contaminants in city air.The atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth) consists of a mixture of gases. These gases and their usual proportions are:4/The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere ranges from almost zero (in very cold weather) to about 5 percent arid averages about 1.2 percent.Strictly speaking, any other substance in the atmosphere or an excess of any of the substances mentioned (with the possible exception of water) is a contaminant. Needless to say, there are many contaminants in the atmosphere.In accordance with their physical state, contaminants may be classified as gaseous or particulate, and the latter may be classified as solid or liquid matter. Particulate matter, especially when dispersed in some medium such as air or some other gas, sometimes is referred to as dispersoid, and the complete system of gas and dispersoid is referred to as aerosol.All substances on the earth are potential sources of atmospheric contaminants. Combustible materials (particularly fuel for heating and power), sea water, earth or soil, metals, and animals (including man) are some of the important sources of contaminants.Ordinarily gases are produced by chemical processes, whereas dispersoids are produced by both chemical and physical processes. There are two general dispersoid-producing processes: (1) Condensation, in which molecules join to form larger units or particles, and (2) disintegration, in which large units are reduced to the particulate range (which for the purpose of this article may be considered to be from 100 microns, or 1/254 inch, down to molecular size) by such processes as crushing, grinding, abrading, and atomizing.“Condensoid"" is a convenient term for dispersoids formed by condensation, and ""disintegrasoid"" for those formed by disintegration. A new method of recycling aluminum dross for preparation Al-Si-Ti alloy was studied in this paper. This was carried out in two processes. first the aluminum doss was pretreated by leaching and calcining process, the fine purity and phase of the intermediate oxide powder up to electrolysis demands, then, could be obtained when aluminum dross after washing have been leached for 2h at 100? in 20% hydrochloric acid and calcined for 2h at 1200?, which was treated by cryoite-based molten salt electrolysis. Finally, the Al-Si-Ti alloy was successfully obtained through electrochemical co-deposition in the cathode shows a typical as-cast microstructure. This new recycling method can produce high quality alloy and may bring remarkable economic and social benefits.

Gold, silver and palladium may be separated from the other base metals and sulphur contained in copper sulphide precipitates derived from the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process using a process involving an oxidation roast, a reduction roast and a Cu(II)/acetonitrile leach. Sulphur is removed as SO, in an oxidation roast and the hot calcine is reduced with carbon, or with carbon plus cuprous chloride. The resulting product contains metallic copper which is readily dissolved with cupric ions in aqueous acetonitrile solution. Copper powder is recovered by thermal disproportionation. The residue contains the bulk of the iron and precious metals and may be treated by a number of methods, including direct cyanidation or melting with suitable fluxes. Melting the residue will produce a copper alloy containing the precious metals and remove the iron as a slag. The alloy can be recycled to the copper leaching stage or sent for toll refining depending on the precious metal content. Impurities from the leaching circuit are controlled by a bleed circuit which in one approach utilizes the SO, from the calciner to produce Chevreul's salt and separates copper from the soluble cobalt and nickel. Alternatively, the bleed may be directed back to the main refinery copper boil stage or oxydrolysis stage.

Sonic travel time logging of exploration boreholes is routinely used in Australia to obtain estimates of coal mine roof rock strength. Because sonic velocity logs are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain during exploration, the technique has provided Australian underground coal mines with an abundance of strength data for use in all aspects of ground control design. However, the technique depends upon reliable correlations between the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and the sonic velocity. This paper describes research recently conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at developing a correlation for use by the U.S. mining industry. At three coreholes in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and southern West Virginia, sonic velocity logs were compared with point load tests for a broad range of coal measure rock types. For the entire data set, the relationship between UCS and sonic travel time is expressed by the following equation, where UCS is in psi and t is the travel time of the P-wave in microsec/ft. UCS = 468,000 x e-0.054t (1) The r-squared value for this equation is 0.87, indicating that a strong correlation between sonic travel time and UCS can be achieved with this technique. The paper also addresses the steps that are necessary to ensure that high-quality sonic logs are obtained for use in estimating UCS.

The diffusion of carbon in Co-5% Fe alloy was studied in a belt-type pressure system at temperatures of up to 1330°C and press loads or nominal pressures of 7 020 tons or 42±3 kbar. Under these conditions, this alloy is in the solid state. Discs of graphite and prealloyed Co-5%Fe were used to make up the diffusion couple. The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing press load due to the tendency of the low density graphite to dissolve in the metallic phase reducing the overall volume and increasing the density of the system. Furthermore, inhomogeneous plastic deformation may have promoted diffusion by creating defects in the alloy. Diffusion couples treated at atmospheric pressure exhibited graphite particles in the metal, while those treated at high pressures exhibited carbide in the form of Widmanstatten laths. Carbon analyses indicated increased carbon solubility with increasing pressure. This was confirmed from calculated high-pressure phase diagrams.

In order to reach a large, untapped reserve of high-quality coal, D8 Cloverlick mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 2,000 ft deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain, Kentucky’s highest peak. D8 Cloverlick mine was extracting the Owl seam, but the corridor’s route lay approximately 70 ft above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby) seam. Adding to the concern, three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam workings.

Increasing depths and mechanization of underground mines have led to the production of large amounts of gaseous and particulate contaminants. Over 100 000 lives have been lost due to methane gas and dust explosions in coal mine workings in both the United States and Canada since 1900. There is, therefore, the need to constantly assess and evaluate the performance of existing mine ventilation systems to maintain safe and acceptable mine environmental conditions. This paper advances research initiatives in the control of methane gas in underground mine environments. It uses the results of continuous monitoring of methane gas concentrations conducted in selected coal mines in North America to assess the effectiveness of existing auxiliary ventilation systems to control methane gas concentrations. The results show that the average quantities of fresh air required to dilute, disperse and remove methane gas concentrations within set levels of one minute varied from 5.43 m3/sec. to 27.97 m3/sec. in the development headings. The average dilution times in the headings studied were less than eight minutes. The calculated dilution efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in the headings varied from 12% to 139%. These efficiencies ranged from poor to excellent. This implies that the auxiliary ventilation systems were capable of controlling the methane gas concentrations below statutory levels but may not be able to cope with large and unusual methane gas concentrations in the headings. This study is significant in the control of methane gas and coal dust explosions in coal mines.

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). Disks Thus, a 113-mm (5 1/4-in.) floppy disk - double sided and double density (DSDD) - contains 320,000 bytes (characters) or 320K. This is about 164 double-spaced, type-

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to determine if phosphogypsum, a waste material from the processing of phosphate rock, contains hazardous toxic materials as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and whether leaching of these toxic materials and radium may occur. Samples of the phosphogypsum stockpiled material were evaluated using the EPA extraction procedure, atomic absorption, neutron activation, x-ray diffraction, and chemical and physical means. Radiological tests performed used both the germanium-lithium and emanation methods. The data show that the phosphogypsum stockpiles are not hazardous toxic waste as defined by EPA criteria. Trace elements and radium are not leached from the phosphogypsum stockpiles. Absorption of trace elements and radium by phosphogypsum is the major reason for their not being leached. The standard error of measurement of radium concentrations was 4.7 pCi/g.
