A study was carried out to evaluate various batch flotation models for the recovery of minerals in a UG2 platinum ore. The major minerals in a UG2ore can be grouped as platinum group minerals, chromite, and siliceous gangue. This study also examined the entrainment of minerals during flotation. The models were ranked using statistical methods and an analysis of model-fit residuals. Entrainment parameters obtained from model fitting were evaluated for logic using a simple mineral-to-water ratio versus time plot. The foremost conclusion from the study was the importance of entrainment modelling. The measurement of water recovery increased the size of the data-set, and the inclusion of a simple entrainment model was statistically significant. The overall fit to the data was improved, and the entrainment model provided logical information on the recovery of gangue minerals that were not considered to be floatable.

"Soil reinforcement using stone columns is one of the well-developed ground improvement techniques for soft clay deposits. The load carrying capacity can be further improved by encasing it with geosynthetic material around the column which offers effective lateral confinement, prevents column contamination with improved drainage and strength characteristics. Improvement of undrained shear strength using vacuum consolidation is a type of hydraulic modification technique in which negative pore pressure will be developed which increases the effective stresses in soil without changing the total stress. The improvement in effective stress resulted in improved undrained shear strength of surrounding soil. In this research work, combined geosynthetic encased stone column and vacuum treatment method is examined for improving of extremely soft clay soils. The improvement in the time rate of consolidation and load carrying capacity of stone columns after vacuum treatment was studied using experimental investigations. It was observed that both load carrying capacity and stiffness of the encased stone column increased significantly with vacuum application. Also, application of vacuum accelerates rate of primary consolidation settlements. With this reduction in time, the construction activity can be accelerated which makes the project economically beneficial.INTRODUCTIONThe rising demand for the land for country’s infra-structure compels the engineers to work with even soft clay deposits which are not suitable for construction activities. As these soils have low bearing capacity and excessive settlement characteristics, ground improvement methods will be required before commencing construction. Among all available treatment methods, soil reinforcement and hydraulic modification technique are well-known popular techniques for its reduction in time required for consolidation settlement with improvement in load carrying capacity. When stone columns are used as a reinforcing member, it creates drainage with improves bearing capacity (Greenwood, 1970; Mitchell & Huber, 1983). However, the limitation includes lack of lateral confinement in very soft clay deposits, possibility of contamination, reduction in drainage path all which leads to the failure of stone columns (Mckenna et al, 1975). To overcome these limitations, encasement using geosynthetic material was adopted around the column which offers better lateral confinement, prevents intrusion of finer clay particle inside the column and provides effective drainage path with improved load bearing capacity characteristics (Van Impe, 1986; Raithel et al. 2005; Short et al. 2005; Borkemper et al. 2006; Murugesan & Rajagopal 2010; Kumar et al. 2014)"

Alloys used at high temperature must resist both creep and corrosion. Design for corrosion resistance is based on the formation of a slow-growing, protective oxide scale by selective oxidation of an appropriate alloy component, usually chromium or aluminium. A successful scale will exclude other corrodents, notably carbon, which can otherwise cause extremely rapid corrosion at high temperatures. Selective oxidation of an alloy component necessarily lowers the concentration of that metal in the alloy subsurface region. Under thermal cycling conditions, mechanical damage to the scale leads to renewed oxide growth and accelerated alloy depletion. Eventually, a point is reached where diffusion of a corrodent into the alloy becomes competitive with the outward diffusion of alloy metal to repair the protective scale. Two examples of alloy failure by carbon attack are considered. In the steam cracking (pyrolysis) process, centrifugally cast tubes of heat-resisting alloy are exposed to a gas stream of hydrocarbon and steam, at a carbon activity of unity. Formation and repair of the surface chromia scale causes alloy depletion, Kirkendall void formation, and subsequent internal precipitation of chromium-rich carbides. Their formation makes chromia scale formation much more difficult, and generates internal stress. Eventually, the tubes fail by creep rupture. In other processes (e.g. steam reforming, heat treatment), synthesis gases are supersaturated with carbon at intermediate temperatures. Once the alloy's protective scale is breached, carbon attacks the depleted substrate. In the case of ferritic alloys, it forms a surface scale of Fe3C. As this scale thickens, the supersaturated carbon precipitates as graphite within its outer regions. The resulting volume expansion causes disintegration of the cementite in a process known as metal dusting. In the case of austenitic alloys, no metal carbide is formed. Instead, carbon dissolves in the depleted metal to diffuse inward and precipitate as graphite within the metal matrix. Again, volume expansion causes disintegration of the alloy, and metal dusting results. Dusting occurs at an extraordinarily rapid rate, and leads to failure by section loss or even penetration.

Billiton Process Research has carried out extensive research over the past four years to develop new process technology using bioleaching for extraction of copper and nickel from their sulphide concentrates. Continuous pilot scale and laboratory batch testwork has been carried out with adapted mesophile bacterial cultures at40°C?45°C, moderate thermophile cultures at 50°C?55°C and thermophile cultures at 65°C?85°C. Pilot scale work has demonstrated the commercial viability of mesophile cultures for bioleaching of secondary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates. Moderate thermophiles offer benefits in terms of reduced cooling requirements for commercial reactors and, in the case of bioleaching of nickel concentrates, some selectivity over bioleaching of pyrite. Continuous pilot scale testwork has shown that thermophiles achieve efficient bioleaching of primary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates, giving much higher recoveries than achieved by bioleaching with a mesophile or moderate thermophile culture.

Long-term mine scheduling is one of the most difficult optimization problems. The problem is said to be NP-complete in that the best possible solution cannot be found any quicker than checking all possible permutations and combinations. Although a number of techniques have been used in the past, many include significant simplifications or fail to produce acceptable results within the required timeframe. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are among the most promising optimisation techniques within operations research. They are based on natural selection and evolution of solutions to complex problems. They have been known to quickly converge within a few percent of the optimal solution by examining only a fraction of the solution search space. The GA itself contains very little problem specific information and as such, has been linked to a discrete-event simulation (DES). The DES feeds information regarding the feasibility and quality of the solutions back to the GA during the optimisation process. In this paper, GAs and DES are described and the coupling of the two methods is outlined. The GA coupled DES is then used to ?optimise? a problem and the results are discussed.

In some parts of the world, vibrators are used extensively for different types of foundation engineering projects. If used correctly and in suitable soils then vibratory pile driving for example is very efficient. However, soil conditions and the installation procedure have great significance for the driving resistance and affect the bearing capacity of vibrated piles. Also the intensity of ground vibrations which are transmitted to the surrounding soil is affected by the vibration process. In spite of the increasing use of vibrators and the rapid development of vibrator technology, many aspects of pile-soil interaction are not yet understood. In order to asses the importance of factors, which govern pile installation (and extraction), it is necessary to consider the entire chain of vibration energy transmission from the vibration source to the pile, the interaction between the vibrating pile and the soil and the wave propagation in the subsoil, Fig. 1. THE present truce in litigation between Western smelting and ranching interests gives opportunity for a summary of the results achieved by metallurgists in condensing fume and de-acidifying furnace-gases. In the absence of complete records of past experiments, there has been a good deal of unnecessary duplication of attempts and' failures. Yet, especially under the recent policy of our large corporations, looking to the economic recovery of the values of by- and waste products, original and, in some cases, effective measures have been developed by American metallurgists. In the case of Bliss vs. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the Montana Supreme Court, recognizing the progressive efforts made to render the flue-gases innocuous, and the value to the community of the smelting company's operations, refused to hamper its work, and returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. In the trial, the experimental firms of the company in the so-called "affected region" were proved to be thriving perfectly, showing that immunity was guaranteed to vegetation and stock by the wide distribution of the sulphurous acid gas in the dry air of Montana. Indeed, L. S. Austin has proved that by the time the fume is 4,000 ft.. distant from the stack, the percentage of sulphurous acid has been diminished from 2.28 to 0.00045; and Angus Smith has shown that rain must contain 40 parts per million of free acid before vegetation is affected. The arsenic in the stack-gases is but a very small part of the original content of the ore, of which 80 per cent. and over is rejected in the concentrator and furnace waste-products or recovered in the flues. Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. This study shows that the ventilation and gas management systems of the Parvadeh_1 mine are in line with the standards of Australian underground mines.CITATION:Hasheminasab, F, Aminossadati, S M and Bagherpour, R, 2017. SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. Communications issues were resolved, better coordination of materials, improved situation awareness during startups, abnormal operations and an opportunity to make improvements during normal operations characterize the changes at the Worsley Refinery. This presentation will review the reasons for the change. Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. This presentation will review the reasons for the change, what changed and the process of changing the culture from reactive to predictive and what difference that has made.

Bureau of Mines activities for safety and health in the mineral industries were reorganized during the fiscal year to provide direct supervision by the Assistant Director -Health and Safety. On December 19, 1954, the field offices conducting these activities were designated as district health and safety offices reporting to the Assistant Director. The functions of determining the causes of accidents and injuries in the mineral industries and recommending measures to eliminate them were continued, with satisfactory results in improved safety records. The inspection of coal mines and enforcement of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act of 1952 were conducted as directed by the Congress, and safety conditions in the mines were notably improved. One coal-mine explosion classed as a major disaster occurred during the year. The causes of that explosion and means for preventing a recurrence were still under investigation because of the extreme difficulty in recovering several portions of the mine. Basic research on the nature of certain hazards and ways of eliminating them is continued. Training of individual workmen and supervisors in this knowledge is a major part of the work.

During the last three years prospecting has been active in southeastern Manitoba and a number of interesting gold, nickel and copper deposits have been discovered within an area 90 miles north of the international boundary, and extending about 40 miles westerly from between mileage 60 and 110 on the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. As known at present, two-thirds of this area of 2,000 square miles is underlain by pre Cambrian granite and granite gneiss and is not likely to contain mineral deposits of economic importance. The remaining one-third is underlain by metamorphosed sediments and lavas (greenstones), penetrated by the granite and granite gneiss and, at various localities, cut by bosses, sills, or dykes of gabbro, diorite, granodiorite, and other types of intrusives. The nickel, copper, and gold mineralization accompanied or followed the intrusion of these different rock types. The gold deposits are limited in distribution, so far as known, to the northern part of this prospecting area and occur along Manigotagan and Wanipigow rivers. These deposits have recently been described in some detail, (3) and therefore only the copper and copper-nickel deposits of the southern part of this area, along Oiseau and Maskwa rivers, will be described in this paper.

A special inlet system has been developed for a TOF mass spectrometer that allows the equilibrated high-temperature vapors from an atmospheric-pressure flow reactor to be leaked into the ion source of the mass spectrometer without undergoing any compositional changes. Using this flow reactor - mass spectrometer system and a modified transpiration system (one that allows for the carrier stream to be equilibrated with two different condensed samples) a series of fundamental vapor transport studies were undertaken. The results of these studies are summarized as follows: 1. The vapor species in equilibrium with condensed copper (I) chloride were determined to be Cu3C13, Cu4C14, and Cu5C15. The gas mixture is fifty percent tetramer near the melting point (703°K), with the percentage of tetramer decreasing with increasing temperature. The following thermodynamic results were obtained.

In many practical situation where the LaModel program in used to analyze the mechanical response and failure of the mining environment, there are very few actual field measurement from the site available for deriving the appropriate input parameters. For coping with this typical lack of field data, this paper presents some recommended calibration techniques derived from on an in-depth understanding of the laminated model formulation and from many years of experience applying LaModel to practical situations. For each of the critical input parameters (rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength) in LaModel, a specific calibration technique is recommended and presented along with the justification for the technique and some appropriate derivations/equations for assistance. It is hoped that this frank discussion of recommended calibration techniques can help novice LaModel user develop better models and can initiate a discussion among rock mechanics experts on how to improve upon the presented techniques.

Rehabilitation approaches, methods and outcomes have changed markedly over the last 100 years, and especially over the last 20 years. Alluvial gold dredges have moved from creating a legacy of boulder fields and ponds to radiata pine plantations and highly productive dairy pastures. The rehabilitated farmland has reduced flood risk, improved drainage and efficient paddock design. The next challenge is to include areas of environmental diversity in these projects, for example, shelter belts, patches of native trees, and wetlands that were part of the original landscape.   West Coast coal mines have also come from a legacy of leaving it to nature to rehabilitate damage by mining to establishing native ecosystems or plantation forests. Developments in techniques at Stockton Mine are used to illustrate the changes in approach to rehabilitation of native forest and tussock heathland ecosystems. The proposed Cypress Mine will adopt a full range of avoidance, remediation through rehabilitation, and off-site mitigation techniques in a æthree-prongedÆ approach.   We propose a coordinated extractive industry approach to mitigate for the impacts of mining on native ecosystems and achieve nationally important conservation benefits that individual projects cannot afford. This approach is particularly beneficial in New Zealand, as our native ecosystems must be actively managed to conserve native plants and animals. Currently, some important species and ecosystems are not being actively managed for conservation.

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSS systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include a better fire suppression system, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

The mining law of British North Borneo is entitled " The Mining Ordinance , 1927. 113 The only mining regulation or rule available is " Rules 313 , 114 passed in accordance with article 26 of the ordinance of 1927. Before the passage of this legislation , the country had no specific law governing the granting of mineral rights , although the land law contained provisions relating to mining lands . The land ordinance of 19135 still controls in a few details . All references in this paper , unless otherwise specifically designated , are to the mining ordinance .

Increased mechanization .of coal mines has emphasized the need for study of actual power requirements of the various machines employed in the production of coal and losses in the distribution of power to these machines. These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The superintendents, engineers, and other officials of the two mines studied cooperated fully and aided in setting up and transporting the test equipment, giving such information as was requested.
