Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost more than $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high costs make extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. Operations research techniques are used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate, over 35%, of the total US longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation was used to generate models of transfers under Carving conditions; and the economic feasibility of tine-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure was investigated.

In medium- to high-grade metamorphic terrains such as found in New York City(NYC), rock mass texture and mineralogy are important factors in predicting TBM penetration destiny. Integration of data from over two decades of traditional field and tunnel mapping suggest that hard-rock TBM penetration in the NYC area depends upon textural, mineralogic, and structural control. The bedrock of NYC consists of many different lithologic units of varying age, composition, texture, and metamorphic grade including many varieties of intrusive rock. In addition, brittle faults of numerous orientations cut the polydeformed crystalline bedrock, producing zones of highly fractured and disturbed ground and high water inflows. Pre-bid compilation of published bedrock data, drill core analysis by geologists to establish lithologic and mineralogic trends, integrated surface geologic mapping along a proposed alignment, and targeted petrographic and geotechnical investigations to characterize the rock mass conditions together constitute an important prelude to successful subsurface bidding and tunneling. A carefully planned program of as-built geological mapping, structural analysis, fracture class mapping, and monitoring of machine performance data provide important information for adjusting to changed conditions. In complex terrains, a clear understanding of the structural geology of any proposed tunnel line is the simplest and most cost-effective method to mitigate losses encountered during TBM tunneling.

A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

Since the adoption of the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977, which mandates that surface subsidence be an intergral part of the underground coal mine design, there has been a sudden rise of demand on guidelines for minimizing surface subsidence and its associated structural damages. Unfortunately there is no sufficient amount of systematic subsidence data to fill such a gap, although considerable research has been devoted to the subsidence-induced damages of surface structures in the past. However, it was said that many surface subsidence surveys have been performed and monitored by coal companies during the past twenty years, and that it will be a great source of information for subsidence engineering design if they can be collected and assembled together. An effort was therefore initiated in the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines in December 1978 to contact each individual coal company in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field for any surface subsidence survey data. After 10 months' survey, the data collected include 17 longwall panels and 2 room and pillar sections. The data in-each panel and section cover the complete set of subsidence survey raw data, underground mine layout maps, surface topo maps, geological loggings showing the stratigraphic sequences and thickness of the overburden, and if available, locations and types of surface structures. On-site visits were followed to study the surface terraines and structures. Interviews were conducted with the owners of the surface structures in most cases about, if any, the history and characteristics of damages.

The H-3 Project is planning, design, and construction of a 10-mile (16 km)-long final segment of new highway that traverses the Koolau mountain range in Oahu. Interstate H-3 traverses North Halawa Valley on one side of the Koolau Mountains and Haiku Valley on the other side. The project includes a tunnel through the mountain range. The one-mile (1.6 km)-long twin-bore Trans-Koolau Tunnel will have two lanes in each direction. The total roadway width including shoulders in each bore will be 38 ft (11.6 m). The geologic and geohydrologic conditions along the alignment present a variety of tunneling problems. Geologic conditions consist of volcanic materials deposited generally in fairly thin basaltic layers. These volcanic materials generally weather down to "MH" soils which are compressible but relatively strong. Perched ground water that is recharged by heavy rainfall is present in the mountains. The paper presents results of initial geologic surveys and exploratory boring, and plans for exploratory tunneling and testing programs. A site specific classification method developed to characterize the weathered profile is presented.

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

Introduction Abandoned mill tailings deposits can be found throughout the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, indicative of mining activities that originated during the great gold rush days of 1875. The Refuse Act of 1899 attempted to regulate the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. But, in most cases, huge volumes of mine and milling wastes were disposed of in ways no longer considered environmentally acceptable. Restoration of gold mill tailings deposits is a relatively new practice to the Black Hills area. This discussion will present an overview of the environmental setting, environmental problems associated with past tailings disposal practices, practices being implemented to solve these problems, and prospects related to present the future tailings disposal practices. The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

The floatation of niobite was studied using a number of collectors at various dosages and solution pH’s. Octyl diphosphonic acid was found to be an effective collector for niobite flotation with good selectivity. A flotation recovery of 91.2% was obtained with 140 mg/l octyl diphosphonic acid at pH’s less than 5.0. Infrared absorption spectroscopy (IAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the interactions of niobite with octyl diphosphonic acid. Species distribution diagram of octyl diphosphonic acid and niobium species was used to elucidate the flotation behavior of the mineral with octyl diphosphonic acid. Electrical Vertical Sounding (EVS) profiling has proven to be a valuable tool to set the alignment and guide the design of a 17 km-long, 4.7m diameter water-conveyance tunnel in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 4,260 m. EVS profiling helped determine where to locate boreholes, and reduce the amount of drilling to 1,200 m of vertical and inclined boreholes. EVS profiling allowed the designer to identify and verify by drilling the existence of zones with difficult tunneling conditions that were avoided by realigning the tunnel. The rock quality was checked by drilling and a combined scheme of excavation by TBM and conventional drill and blast technique was developed for the final design.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is undertaking seismic upgrades of the Claremont Tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area. The tunnel carries treated water across the active Hayward Fault to supply a major metropolitan area. Studies indicate the tunnel could be severed by fault offset during a major seismic event. A design approach to achieve limited operation of the tunnel following fault displacement has been established and design details are currently being evaluated. This paper describes the project, the design approach, and summarizes significant construction constraints.

Longwall coal mine operators in the US are required to ventilate multi-panel longwall districts but may have little or no knowledge about what happens to the ventilation air between the inlet evaluation points (IEPs), bleeder evaluation points (BEPs), and bleeder fans. The effectiveness of bleeder performance can directly influence the ability of a ventilation system to remove and dilute coal bed methane emissions. Consequently, the performance of coal mine bleeders is an important aspect of underground worker safety. U.S. coal mining stakeholders have acknowledged their belief that the T- junction split at the longwall face tailgate corner is very important in controlling the distribution of ventilation air. The percentage of air directed inby towards the bleeders and bleeder fan and outby to the submains is often not well-defined and can vary over the life of a longwall panel. To obtain direct measurements of bleeder performance, a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), was released into the intake air stream along the panline of active longwall panels and in the bleeder/gob ventilation air inlets of an inactive panel. Tracer gas sampling was conducted underground using tube bundles attached to permissible vacuum pumps in the gateroads, former gateroads, and bleeders. Surface tracer gas monitoring was also conducted from operating gob boreholes and from bleeder fans. Testing was performed on multiple longwall panels which included various phases of longwall development and variable path lengths of ventilation air transport to bleeder fan installations. The applied methodology defines and describes coal bed gas pathways, rates, and volumes of movement at the bleeder/gob interfaces, and indicates flow rates for air/gas mixtures within these gobs. These findings are reported for three stages of longwall extraction using direct field-based measurements. Changes in the T-junction ventilation air distribution over the life of a longwall panel and its variable effect on panel ventilation airflow are discussed. These findings will assess the effectiveness of commonly applied ventilation strategies for improving air distribution and ventilation controls to meet statutory requirements and to achieve the desired ventilation patterns through multiple phases of longwall panel extraction.

Faced with rapid growth that strained their current water supply capabilities, the Somerset Water Service in Somerset, KY decided to construct a new intake structure on the shore of Lake Cumberland. With an existing intake structure within 200', very hard limestone geology with calcite geodes, and lake level fluctuations as high as 50 ' ,this project posed many challenges. The following paper discusses how mechanical excavation techniques were used to overcome these obstacles.

Unlike in coal mines where caving methods are used, the subsidence over potash mines in Saskatchewan, Canada, is a function of gradual mining convergence. Because of the presence of high pressure water aquifers over the evaporite salt formations, the mines have to be designed as regionally stable and no caving is allowed. The extracted area converges gradually and the convergence is mainly a function of the extraction and the mining method employed. Consequently, the subsidence rate is very slow and the bridging of the over-lying strata is a considerably more important phenomenon than elsewhere. The paper evaluates a case history of convergence and subsidence in a deep potash mine in Saskatchewan.

Potential air emission impacts to federal Class I areas from distant sources are receiving increasing scrutiny by federal land managers (FLMs). This paper provides summary results of the impact analyses conducted for FLMs and PSD permitting of a proposed expansion for a taconite processing facility. Results from air quality increment, acid deposition, mercury deposition, and visibility analyses for Class I areas located 50 to 162 km from the facility showed the project would meet the respective regulatory and guideline values for the specific analyses. During the course of the air quality analyses, potential new requirements from the FLMs’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup (FLAG) efforts and USEPA’s Regional Haze Program were brought into the PSD discussions. The implications for these future guidelines and regulations as they may affect future expansions at other mineral processing facilities are also discussed.

Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. The pollution of our water supply, Lake Michigan, is a continuing threat so long as our overflows from combined sewers exist. The problems have become even more acute during recent years, due to the increase of paved area- which accelerates and enlarges the flows of storm water. After each storm, mixtures of raw sewage and storm water spill into our waterways. If the storm is too large for the drainage systems, the mixture backs up into our streets and basements. Under severe conditions, it may even become necessary to open the locks, and discharge the polluted water into Lake Michigan. Consider the scope of the problem, as shown in Figure 1. The area in which combined sewers exist is 375 square miles, located in the central parts of Chicago and 49 suburbs. There are an estimated 640 overflow outlets to the waterways, each requiring attention. The capacity of outlets tributary to the waterways has increased dramatically over the years. Each time a pocket of upstream flooding is drained into the channels, the problem of its rapid disposition increases. Another difficulty is that the bottom of our waterways is covered with a blanket of accumulated sludge, ranging in depth up to 3-feet. The use of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) regional meetings as a forum to educate teachers on the role of minerals in our society has been immeasurably successful. Each year, on average about 3,500 to 4,000 teachers participate in each of the three regional NSTA meetings. At each of these meetings, nearly 2,000 teachers visit the “Minerals Coalition Booth” and receive free mineral samples and other educational support materials. Some rules of thumb for a successful booth at the NSTA are provided. Considering the level of effort for such a booth, are there alternatives? The NSTA also organizes a national annual meeting with attendance of about 20,000. All who have participated in a regional NSTA agree that the traditional approach of providing a mineral set and teacher materials for a substantial fraction of the 20,000 attendees is not feasible. Conceptual alternatives for minerals education at the national NSTA meeting are introduced and evaluated.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump…) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch…), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment) Intermediate gearboxes are not required when a motor is used with a rated speed that directly matches the speed requirement of the driven equipment. Furthermore the VSD can be used to smoothly start the motor and to vary speed during operation, which means that it satisfies both requirements."

In the UK, powered supports are normally salvaged from longwall faces on completion of production, for reuse on the next unit. Where a spare set of supports are held, the salvaged supports are often stored in underground roadways awaiting installation. One mine in the UK extracts a 5m section, and holds two sets of 2x950t powered supports, each weighing approx. 35t and having closed dimensions of 8m long, 2.5 high and 1.75m wide. As the first set would not be required for over 12 months, and because of space limitations below ground, it was decided that the supports would be left in situ, the district sealed, and reopened at a later date for support salvage. The paper described the decision making process, and the inertisation of the sealed district utilising nitrogen generated on the mine surface and piped to the point of use. The re-entry and re-ventilation of the district are also described. The paper then goes on to describe in more detail the discovery of a spontaneous combustion event that occurred in the waste behind the powered supports, and its treatment and control using extra nitrogen brought to the mine by tanker and introduced at strategic locations along the faceline via boreholes, leading to a successful salvage and re-sealing.
