Large excavations are well known to result in rock mass deformations which can present challenging situations for mine personnel. Most of the currently available ground movement monitoring devices fail to adequately provide mine operators with highly accurate and meaningful insights into rock mass deformation or displacement. The use of distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) in industries such as oil and gas and civil engineering has shown the potential of these sensors to deliver real-time, highly accurate, and long-range distributed strain measurements with great success. However, the use of these sensors in underground mining is limited to a few case studies.

The Republic of México is the world's largest producer of celestite/strontium carbonate and natural sodium sulfate. It is also a significant producer of flourspar, barite, graphite, sulfur, feldspar, salt and gypsum. New production may be brought on stream for borates, wollastonite, garnet, calcium carbonate and others. The country covers a geographic area of approximately 2 million square kilometers (760,000 square miles), and is divided into seven geological/geomorphological provinces. Less than 20 percent has been explored in detail for either nonmetallic or metallic minerals. This leaves large areas available for the discovery of world-class industrial mineral deposits. In addition to new deposits of those minerals currently being produced, there is exploration and development potential for borates, magnesite, rare earths, nepheline syenite, heavy mineral sands and numerous others.

This paper describes the recent application of gasketed, precast concrete segmental lining design that has improved tunneling productivity and quality. The speci?c segment arrangement includes: six-piece ring with equal 60 degree gasketed segments, juxtaposed key and counter-key segments, trapezoidal and parallelogram shaped segments, inclined and skewed radial joints and plastic circumferential joint connectors. This allows rapid, but accurate ring erection, reducing mine cycle times. The design avoids cruciform joints, minimizes potential gasket damage and eliminates the need for separate left and right ring molds. The implementation on the Los Angeles ECIS and NEIS sewer projects is described.

In some parts of the world, silver chloride occurs naturally in deposits of cerargyrite (1) (i.e. horn silver). In other cases, silver chloride is produced and exploited for its well- known photographic or electrochemical properties. In this case, it is a valuable commodity needing no further refinement. However, silver chloride is frequently encountered in precious metals refining. In most cases, it is a by-product that occurs in small amounts. For example, it is a common occurrence in gold refining when using the Miller and Wohlwill refining processes or when parting fire assay beads. As such, the mode of reduction to elemental silver is of little impact on the overall refining economics. Thus, a variety of reduction methods are employed all enjoying varying degrees of popularity (2). On the other hand, silver chloride serves as a key intermediate in the production of fine silver by nitrogen species catalyzed acid pressure leaching of refractory silver concentrates. This has most recently been practiced at the Sunshine Mining & Refining plant located in Kellogg, Idaho. Thus, efficient methods of reduction, precipitation and materials handling on an industrial scale are of the utmost importance. In this presentation, the evolution of these methods will be detailed.

Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

A 15 km water supply tunnel is being constructed in Buenos Aires, Argentinata expand the capacity of the existing system. Two 4.3 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunneling machines operating at times from the same shaft on a congested work site and advancing through sedimentary deposits underlying this wonderful city pose interesting challenges. As of January 1999approximately 50% of the tunnel has been excavated. Combined machine production rates of 1026 m/month have been achieved. Presentations made in prior proceedings can be referenced for details of the overall Project scope and for details of the tendering process. The purpose of this paper is to compliment those presentations by addressing now the execution of the work.

The effects of eight independent variables on froth flotation product yield, ash content, and coal recovery were studied using laboratory batch flotation of 0.6 am x 0 coal. The eight flotation variables investigated were air feed rate, pre-dispersion of collector oil, impeller speed, product collection time, initial solids concentration, collector conditioning time, frother (methyl isobutyl carbinol) concentration, and collector (No. 2 fuel oil) dosage. The two-level Plackett-Burman screening design and the three-level Box-Behnken design were used. Within the ranges studied, air feed rate had no effect on product yield. Pre-dispersion of collector oil, impeller speed, product collection time, initial solids concentration, and collector conditioning time showed only minor effects on the product yield and quality. Frother concentration (mg/L) in the process water and collector oil dosage (g/kg) were shown to be the dominant independent variables in coal froth flotation. Flotation experiments that vary initial solids concentration at constant frother dosage (g/kg) confound the effects of frother concentration (mg/L) and solids concentration. The dominating effects of frother concentration and oil dosage on coal recovery and froth product ash content are illustrated with three-dimensional plots. The relationship between froth product ash and coal recovery is also clearly illustrated by the flotation data.

The Silver City mining region is located in Grant County, southwestern New Mexico (Fig. 1). This area is well known, having produced large tonnages of base and lesser amounts of precious metals over the past several years. Mining within the region continues today, as well as exploration activity, which seems to have been on the increase since the recent discovery of a large skarn-associated Zn-Pb-Cu replacement deposit near Pinos Altos, a mineral district within the region (McKnight and Fellows, 1978). Because the Silver City area contains a number of mineral districts and retains promise for additional deposits, as suggested by widespread hydrothermal alteration and favorable igneous rocks, it was selected as the focus of two independent geochemical studies, both seeking to enhance anomaly-to- background contrast in order to improve our abilities to detect blind metal deposits or subtle manifestations of near-surface occurrences. The first of these independent studies involved the systematic sampling of those secondary Fe-Mn oxides that occur within coatings, selvages, and fault fillings, and then the selective extraction of these oxides from the host-rock matrix by chemical methods. The second study sought to isolate clastic Fe-Mn-rich materials from the heavy fraction of stream alluvium. The ultimate source of the clastic Fe-Mn oxides is presumed to be the same coatings, selvages, and fault fillings sought by the direct sampling of joints, but has been transported as a result of lateral erosional processes.

The ability to sense or detect the coal/non-coal interface during mining can provide numerous advantages for improving net coal recovery and quality, for increasing productivity, and for mining coal which would otherwise be ignored. This is particularly true when considering multiple, pitching, and thin coal seams. This paper discusses the application of coal interface sensing and examines several potential coal interface sensing techniques with respect to state-of- the-art, design, performance, and cost criteria. Four interface boundaries are considered: the roof, the floor, the rib, and the forward region.

Surface mining and reclamation has the potential to at least temporarily increase surface runoff and resultant erosion and gully development. This increase in erosion is due in part to compaction of the soil surface with heavy equipment, creation of large relatively unvegetated watersheds, and elimination of natural dendritic ephemeral drainage patterns. Methods for stabilizing gully channels which may develop prior to establishment of sufficient vegetation to control erosion are analyzed. Utilization of various sizes of riprap for channel lining, the use of riprap check dams, reinforcement of riprap check dams, and the relation- ship of type of control structure to area of watershed and resultant flow velocities are discussed.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

Continuing interest in processes that will effect separations in the fine particle size range has prompted intense interest in the use of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) for beneficiation of uranium ores. Some of the uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by HGMS. This paper presents a brief review of the problems associated with uranium ores beneficiation, a description of the HGNS process, and the effects of the parameters--pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading and magnetic field gradient on product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGHS is related to ore specific properties such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix and interference of micron sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

Anionic conditioning of phosphate ores prior to fatty acid flotation is a very critical step that determines the eventual selectivity, recovery and hence the economics of the process. However the chemical mechanisms operating during this conditioning step are not established. Several studies have been conducted in the past to determine the mode of interaction of collectors with the phosphate fractions however these have been done on a laboratory scale using pure phosphate minerals. In order to test the relevance of the observed effects to plant practice in this work a comprehensive survey of plant practice was first conducted and then adsorption on flotation feed and francolite were studied under simulated plant conditions. Effects of conditioning energy and water chemistry as well as solids loading and fuel oil were determined. Most importantly, different adsorption mechanisms were found to be dominant under laboratory and plant conditions. In plant water, there was some physisorption of oleic acid on phosphate flotation feed and francolite in addition to chemisorption. However, in distilled water under laboratory conditions only chemisorption was detected. Fuel oil reduced the residual oleic acid in solution after adsorption, which explains the beneficial role of extender in phosphate flotation. The dissolved species in solution arising from the flotation feed or plant processing water are shown to clearly play a major role in determining the adsorption of oleic acid on the substrates. The study also specifically demonstrates the importance of conducting research tests under plant mixing conditions and plant water chemistry for the results to be useful commercially.

Both the hardware and software required to implement such a system are discussed, including the interface for the special image acquisition hardware. The system concept is given with examples to illustrate the step-by-step procedure for the implementation of image-processing algorithms.

This paper is a brief status summary of investigations by the authors over the past decade to develop a continuous process for recovering' high purity metal powder from pregnant solutions by gaseous reduction at elevated temperatures and pressures. Although these studies included extraction of other metals such as nickel, silver, and gold, this presentation will be confined to the hydrogen reduction of acidic and ammoniacal solutions of copper. The continuous hydrogen reduction process (CHR) described herein enjoys the environmental advantages of other hydrometallurgical processes but, in addition, provides a substantial benefit in fuel economy over competing processes. As was recognized by Schaufelberger in 1956, for a given amount of fuel a continuous hydrogen reduction process has the potential for producing four to six times as much metal as an electrolysis process (1). Although hydrogen reduction of metal salt solutions has been known for more than a century, extensive development work leading to commercialization was not initiated until the 1950's. Since then, commercial applications relative to other extractive techniques have been minor and have been confined to batch or to continuous, completely-mixed autoclaves. By contrast, the process described herein utilizes a continuous, tubular reactor which is operated in modified plug flow so that only limited and localized backmixing occurs. Thus, gradients in concentration, temperature, and pressure exist over the length of the reactor, the presence of which can be utilized to advantage for achieving high conversions and product quality (2, 3).

Freeport Indonesia consists of surface, civil and underground mining areas exposed to numerous geotechnical risks and hazards. PTFI uses various monitoring systems (Micro-Seismic, Firefly Light System, Mira Geoscience machine learning, etc.) to effectively manage these risks. The significant volumes of data from these sensors must be integrated into actionable information to provide the expected risk management. This occurs at the GeoEngineering Integrated Monitoring Centre (GIMC), a centralized department within the GeoEngineering Division, tasked with the responsibility to manage all geotechnical monitoring systems. The main hazard the GIMC is responsible for managing in real time is mine seismicity within the underground mining areas and the potential impacts on safe operations. Seismic system engineers achieve this objective through 24 hours a day and seven days a week operations of the GIMC, providing a centralized point of communication, alerts, evacuations and control during seismic events and emergencies. This paper will describe how the GIMC achieves its goal using reliable procedures and strategies based on detailed Triggered Action Response Plan (TARP), concise communications, novel technologies (FireFly Lighting System), and proven seismic re-entry programs to manage risk within the underground mining operations. The integration of geotechnical monitoring and reporting into a centralized group has improved the effectiveness and management of seismic risks and hazards at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mining operations.

The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is the site of the only commercial diamond mine in North America. Three major lithologies are associated with the intrusion, a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in .which the majority of diamonds occur, and associated tuff. Previous studies, including mining history, geological, geophysical, petrological and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined and supported. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. This paper will discuss the background information about rock cutting tools used for soft ground excavation, their history and evolution. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.
