Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

Recycled materials are increasingly being used in road construction to supplement natural aggregate derived from crushed stone, sand, and gravel. An understanding of the amount of substitution that is taking place, its economics, and factors affecting the level of substitution is useful in estimating the potential for recycling and in assessing the total supply of aggregate. While U.S. consumption of recycled aggregates from crushed concrete is estimated to have increased 160 percent between 1994 and 1996; it comprised less than 5 percent of total aggregates consumed in 1995. Construction waste supply is regional, and is determined by infrastructure decay and replacement rates. Aggregate recycling rates are greater in urban areas where infrastructure is being replaced, natural aggregate resources are limited, disposal costs are high, or strict environmental regulations prevent disposal. Recycling is expected to increase as construction contractors attempt to save on transportation, disposal, and new material costs. Aggregate producers include recycled material as an option to consumers in order to prolong the life of their reserves and improve their range of products. Recycled aggregates can be a supplement for natural aggregates in selected applications, but their use should be evaluated locally based upon relative cost, quality, and market factors Because aggregate recycling is often affected by local and regional transportation systems, disposal and tipping fees, resource supply, the market for specific products, and municipal support, costs for three representative fixed site operations of different sizes were modeled. Under study conditions, all were found to be profitable, but highly dependent upon local tipping fees and market prices, which can differ significantly by location. Smaller operations were found to have different operational dynamics, often requiring creative marketing or incentives to maintain profitability.

While surety capacity for the mining industry continues to shrink, States are demanding greater financial certainty for closure/post closure obligations. To combat these demands, larger mining companies are pursuing a Mining Surety Reinsurance Program that requires a significant up front capital contribution. This paper outlines an alter-native program for middle market mining organizations. The program utilizes a “Blended Finite Risk” environmental insurance solution with surety acting as the “front” in states where insurance is not an acceptable form of collateral. Marsh proposes creating separate programs for each State requiring surety. The reason for separate programs stems from each states’ different surety rules. Insurance companies typically require at least $5 million in future value remediation liabilities for finite risk programs. Since most middle market mining companies have obligations that fall below this threshold, the Blended Finite Risk Program contemplates combining several companies closure/post closure liabilities to accomplish the minimum amount required by the insurance company. Why use a Blended Finite Risk Program? One of the primary benefits is the financial assurance that funds will be available for planned remediation. For example, the financial assurance may be required by a government agency. The certainty may help facilitate a merger or acquisition. Additionally, the funds may be part of a CER-CLA PRP settlement. In all cases, the insurer providing coverage would be a secure independent 3rd party. A Blended Finite Risk Program also provides a long-term solution – up to 30 years and in some select cases longer. The benefit to a state or the BLM is the removal of financial uncertainty. An insurance company writing the policy would have an AA or AAA balance sheet. The hardening of surety markets coupled with the tightening of financial assurance requirements in many states have necessitated the posting of 100% collateral. This program substantially reduces these collateral requirements.

Study area is located on the NorthWestern of Yatagan-Yenikoy and placed in the units of the crystaline Menderes massif of Eagen, Turkey. Stratigraphically gneissic, migmatitic and metagranitic rocks are found at the base. Garnet schists, phyllitic rocks lie unconfirmitelly upon the basement rocks. Permian aged marbles can be observed as diferrent sized lenses within the schists. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous aged gray colored dolomites and pure crystaline calcite bearing marbles lie upon the Permian aged schists. Neogen series, mainly composed of conglomerates, claystones, marl and limestones unconformly cover the other basement series, mentioned above. Pure calcite bearing marble occurances are found at 2 locations in the study area. These are known as Berber Quarry and Kavuk Quarry. Samples numbered as N7, N8, NA from the Berber Quarry, mineralogically composed of Calcite (97-99%)+iron oxide (1-3%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (97,98%), Fe2O3 (0.5-1%), SiO2 (0.025%) N9 and N10, sampled from the Kavuk Quarry-mineralogically composed of Calcite (94,95%)+iron oxide (2-3%)+albite-Quartz (1-2%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (92-93%), SiO2 1.49%, Fe2O3 0.42%. Especially in plastic and paint sector albite and quartz are unwilling minerals due to their hardness. Approximatelly 1/20 of the study area (87.500 km2) contains industrial calcite occurances. Moreover about 100 billion Tons geological, 1.86 billion tons runable (possible) calcite reserve calculated. It can be expected the calcite quality will be increased with depth. During the running stage of the quarries over burden removel and hand sorting processes will positive affect of the quality.

Copper price rebounds A worldwide scramble for diminishing supplies of copper has pushed the red metal's price to more than $2.20/kg ($1 per lb), the highest level since 1980. The first nine months of 1987, world copper production was down 1% from a year ago, while consumption rose 7%. Demand has been fueled by economic strength in several countries, particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The price has also been helped by interest rate declines that have prompted manufacturers to build up inventories. In addition, China is expected to be a major buyer in 1988 as it stocks up for its five-year industrialization plan. There appears to be no sign of any significant increase in copper supplies until later 1988 or early 1989. This means supplies probably will remain tight for some time even if world economic activity slows. Strikes and other production problems slowed world output of copper in 1987. As a result, copper supplies are the lowest they have been in 14 years. World inventories currently total 625 kt (690,000 st). That is not much above the 585 kt (645,000 st) level reached in 1974 when the price of copper rose to a record $3.84/kg ($1.74 per lb). This makes all the more interesting what Chile, the world's largest copper producer, has been doing lately. Chile has been the world's largest copper producer since 1982, when it overtook the United States. Table 1 shows Chile's copper grades, reserves, and production at its mines. Chile contains roughly one-fifth of the world's copper reserves. At present production rates, these reserves would last for more than 100 years. In 1986, Chile produced 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of fine copper, up 3%. Chile accounted for 17% of the world's copper output.

The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust emission rates from overburden drilling at a surface coal mine and the transport of this dust to downwind locations. The emission rates were estimated by using multiple gravimetric dust samplers mounted on a cross-shaped tripod located immediately downwind of the drill. The transport of this dust was measured at more distant downwind locations by a combination of respirable gravimetric sampling and integrated bag sampling of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), which was used as a tracer gas. Two modes of sampling were used: (1) At five sampling locations arranged in a semicircle around the drill. The radius of this arc ranged from 15.85 m (52 ft) to 71.32 m (234 ft). (2) In-line sampling at downwind locations with samplers located at intervals of either 10.67 m (35 ft) or 15.24 m (50 ft) for a total distance of 76.20 m (250 ft). Samples were taken 1 .22 m to 1.52 m (4 to 5 ft) above ground level. Test results for the semicircular test arrangements showed that at any downwind location, the maximum contribution of respirable dust due specifically to the drilling operation was 42%; the average for eight tests was 13.6%. In general, there was no correlation between the downwind distance of this maximum contribution and the maximum contribution itself because of changing wind direction. Test results for the in-line arrangements indicated that the transport of the dust from the drilling operation usually decreases rapidly with distance and that, even though the drill dust may produce significant health hazards for the drill operator and drill helper (or other personnel in the immediate vicinity), the exposure of downwind personnel to drill-generated dust may not be a significant problem.

The paper under discussion provides an excellent and concise study of compartment ergonomics for thin seam equipment. However, in accomplishing this, some very important operational aspects were ignored. Since these are likely to be determinant, the authors' response is solicited. The novel shuttle car with its cross-car, end-mounted compartment is operationally very different from the current one. The latter can be considered a highly mobile extension of the continuous miner or loader, with a pass-through conveyor, dump boom, and extra storage. As such, the vehicle's kinematics are the simple "I," or shuttle pattern, bent for going around pillars, with an intermediate stop at the "change-out point" (Adler, 1986 ). The action of the cable reel adjusts well to this pattern. The proposed shuttle car's motion either superimposes a "Y," time is lost (5 seconds) for each cycle, space is needed, line of sight is compromised, and a cable anchor is probably required at the dump. A chute is almost prohibitive in construction time and cost. The lack of a dump boom further curtails flexibility in the proposal. The value of a standard hand and opposite standard hand configuration also needs consideration. Many front-end loaders have a rocker (overshot) capability that is designed to achieve an "I” pattern. And crawler loaders sometimes use a side dumping bucket variant for the same purpose. These examples indicate the pattern's importance. For underground, thin seam application, the ram car has become popular. This is an articulated truck, battery-powered, and with an ejector dump. Its operational patterns would be similar to the novel shuttle car, except without the loading flexibility provided by a conveyor. Since the cab location of the proposed shuttle car largely obviates some of the major advantages of the present shuttle car, the question arises whether this configuration could be adapted to the current ram car and scoop

Approximately 10 to 20 pct of exhaust aerosol mass from diesel equipped vehicles operating without exhaust controls is attributable to particles in the 1.0-10 µm size range. Recent in-mine measurements suggest that, in addition to reducing overall exhaust aerosol mass concentrations, the use of waterbath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) may significantly reduce the concentration of diesel exhaust particles larger than approximately 0.5 µm aerodynamic diameter. This implies that a measurement system that discriminates between diesel and mineral dust aerosols on the basis of aerosol size would have different accuracies depending on use of a water scrubber. To test this hypothesis, laboratory measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine diesel exhaust aerosol penetration efficiency through a water scrubber as a function of size and engine operating conditions. Size distributions were determined using a Micro-Orifice, Uniform Deposit Impactor. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO x, O2 and gas-phase hydrocarbon concentrations were also measured. No significant effect was found for these gases other than a slight decrease in NOx emissions. The water scrubber served as a moderate aerosol control with reductions in mass concentrations of about 29±9 pct under most conditions. This reduction occurred for particles less than 0.2 µm and greater than 0.6 µm aerodynamic diameter. Coal dust aerosols are mostly larger than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter. With use of a water scrubber, separating the aerosol into two parts, greater and less than about 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter during sampling, results in collection of diesel and coal dust aerosol accurate to within 10 pct. Without a water scrubber in operation, such a sampling protocol would only be accurate to approximately 15 pct.

Much has been written recently about the Henderson Mine Project in Colorado being developed by American Metal Climax, Inc. To briefly recap the project, AMAX has an ore body, containing about 300 million tons of proven and probable molybdenum ore which is located under Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. The mill, however, will be located on the western slope in the Williams Fork Valley where water and space for waste disposal are more available. AMAX will carry the ore by remote controlled trains from a gathering level underground at the mine, through a ten (10) mile tunnel under the Continental Divide and thence along a five (5) mile surface railroad to the mill site. One of the more challenging facets of the project is the western portion of the ten (10) mile tunnel being driven by Dravo Corporation through difficult ground conditions, downgrade, toward the Continental Divide. The tunnel is a 16'-6" wide by 15' high horseshoe, which runs in a straight line and drops at a constant three percent (3%) grade from the West Portal to the ore zone. Dravo's portion is anticipated to be about 6 1/2 miles long and includes permanent pumping stations located every 4,900 linear feet (lf) permanent rectifier stations every 12,5001f, and one (1) 1,560 ventilation shaft. The western portion of the tunnel lies in the Idaho Springs formation, a mixture of gneiss and schist with some granitic intrusions. Toward the Continental Divide a transition into Silver Plume Granite is expected to occur. Preconstruction geologic information indicated the Idaho Springs and Silver Plume formations to be basically competent with some faulted and altered areas. It

The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

Today, approximately 31% of underground coal mining operations have designated occupations or areas with more stringent (below 2.0 mg/m3) respirable dust standards in place. Many U.S. coal mines have been able to maintain compliance with very low dust levels, and the Bureau of Mines, in an effort to identify those factors contributing to low dust levels, completed a survey of twelve continuous miner sections which were able to maintain their dust levels at or below 0.5 mg/m3. The quantity and quality of face ventilation appeared to be the most important factor in controlling dust exposure. The results directed Bureau research towards identifying improved face ventilation techniques for reducing quartz dust levels on continuous mining operations. This research has involved the evaluation of a half-curtain face ventilation technique which reduces the cross-sectional area of the entry, thus increasing the air velocity over the operator. The Bureau has also conducted extensive laboratory studies to compare tubing versus brattice, including an evaluation of both systems in a crosscut turn. In an effort to improve ventilation and reduce dust exposures of roof bolter operators working downwind of the continuous mining machine, the Bureau has evaluated two novel face ventilation systems. The first system consists of a fan discharge tubing technique which routes dusty air away from the return entry being bolted. In a technique similar to the fan/tubing concept, exhaust air from the upwind continuous miner face can be scrubbed using a dust collector to capture a portion of the dusty air, clean it, and supply it to the bolter operators as a split of clean intake air. A better understanding of face ventilation techniques should lead to solutions to the problem of more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

INTRODUCTION Increasing a miner's chance of surviving a disaster requires advance planning for emergencies, adequate training of personnel, and the provision of proper survival equipment. It is extremely important that fires and toxic gases be detected early, and that warning systems such as stench, audible and visual alarms, and communications systems be provided to allow timely escape. However, situations do occur where timely warning is not provided and immediate escape is not possible, regardless of the precautions that are taken. Under such circumstances, a combination of new per¬sonal protective devices and old techniques can provide protection that is adequate to save a miner's life. SELF-RESCUE EQUIPMENT Self-rescuers are devices which provide a short-term supply of respirable air under the potentially lethal con¬ditions following a mine disaster. Functioning either as filtration devices for the elimination of carbon monoxide (CO) or as oxygen supplies, self-rescuers allow an endangered miner a limited amount of time in which to effect an escape or reach a place of temporary safety. Carbon-Monoxide Self-Rescuers For almost 50 years, filtration self-rescuers have protected miners' lives following explosions or fires. Designed to eliminate carbon monoxide from inhaled air, the first of these devices was approved in the 1920s and has evolved into the two units that are approved today-the Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) W-65 and the Draeger 810. Both of these units rely on the cata¬lytic conversion of very toxic carbon monoxide to rela¬tively safe levels of carbon dioxide (CO,). As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, both of these filtration self-rescuers operate in the same manner. On inhalation, the mine air passes through both coarse and fine filters that remove the dust, preventing the dust from coating the chemical beds or entering the miner's mouth. The air then passes over a drying agent that removes water vapor; this is required to prevent the water vapor from poisoning the catalyst. Subsequently, the dried air passes over the Hopcalite catalyst, where carbon monoxide is converted to carbon dioxide. Then, the air passes through a heat exchanger that reduces the temperature of the inhaled air. Finally, the air is inhaled by the user. Air exhaled by the user passes through the heat ex¬changer and exits the device through an expiratory valve. Both units of this type are subject to certain limita¬tions: 1) The units do not protect the user against oxygen¬deficient air; when air is inhaled through this type of self-rescuer, the device only removes the carbon mon¬oxide. If the mine air contains less than 15% oxygen, anoxia is inevitable. Symptoms of anoxia include dizzi¬ness, shortness of breath, quickened pulse, and deeper and more rapid respiration while the victim is at rest. During heavy exertion such as would be expected dur¬ ing escape efforts, a 15% oxygen level can cause loss of consciousness. 2) The units do not protect against excessive levels of carbon dioxide. Available data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide concentrations following explosions or fires are limited, but there are indications that the carbon monoxide concentration can rise to 2% and the carbon dioxide concentration can reach 5 or 6% of the mine air (by volume). In some situations, the in¬haled air could contain up to 6 or 7% carbon dioxide. At a carbon dioxide concentration higher than 2%, breathing patterns can be affected adversely. At a con¬centration of 6 or 7%, the effects include severe respira¬tory distress, with unconsciousness resulting from exer¬tion such as that needed for escape activities. 3) The units do not protect against high inhalation temperatures. The catalytic oxidation of carbon mon¬oxide to carbon dioxide is an exothermic reaction that evolves a large amount of heat. As the carbon monoxide concentration increases, the temperature of the inhaled air also increases. Available data show that above 1.5% carbon monoxide, the air inhaled through some self¬rescuers can be as high as 90°C (194°F). At those

The Inland Steel Company operates five underground iron mines in the Lake Superior District. The two largest of these, from the standpoint of productive capacity, are the Sherwood Mine in Iron River and the Bristol Mine in Crystal Falls, both on the Menominee Range of Michigan. It is at these two mines that we have had our principal experience with belt conveyor installations underground, .At the Sherwood Mine, which has an annual capacity of about 450,000 tons, the first conveyor belt installationwas made in 1947 when conveyors were installed in the main haulage drifts on the 1200 ft, level, It was estimated at that time that approximately 5,000,000 tons would be mined from the stopes above the 1200 ft, level and. that if all this material could be moved to the shaft by belt conveyor, the entire cost of operation, including maintenance and the amortization of the equipment, would be about $,05 per ton, which was slightly more than half of what the cost would have been by conventional tramming methods employing locomotives and cars. Now, ten years later, the 1200 ft, level is almost completely mined out and we have actually removed. 5,200,000 tons and. the average cost of transporting this material to the shaft by belt conveyor has been $.095 per ton. Since there has been a substantial increase in hourly rate of pay and also in the cost of materials since 1947, we feel that the anticipated savings were very nearly realized., The 1200 ft, level installation at the Sherwood consisted of two 36" trunk line conveyors 815 feet long and 380 feet long, respectively, deliverying ore to the shaft. These in turn were fed. by three lateral 36" conveyors which paralleled the sides of the orebody, These gathering conveyors passed under draw points to which ore was brought from the stopes by mea S of scrapers or shaker conveyors, Shaker conveyors were used for a number of years in conjunction with the conveyor belt system of haulage but it was finally concluded that with this particular type of ore, the maintenance on shaker conveyors was excessive. Therefore, more recently, we have gone back to scrapers for the shorter distances and. are using belt conveyors in the scraper drifts for the longer distances. After this belt system had been in operation for about three years, it had proved to be so successful that it was decided to proceed with the same system or. a new level to be opened up 200 feet below. Instead of sinking the shaft and driving a horizontal drift to the orebody on the 1400 ft, level, an inclined conveyor drift was started near the shaft at the 1200 ft. level and driven downwards toward, the orebody at a slope of 15 degrees. The conveyor installed in this inclined drift is 36" wide, 990 feet long, is powered. by a 100 hp motor, and is capable of delivering 300 tons per hour to the 1200 ft, level shaft pocket. It is fed by lateral horizontal conveyors on the 1300 ft? 1400 ft., and 1425 ft, sub levels. Wien the inclined drift was started, the rock was scraped from the breast directly to the rock pocket at the shaft. As the distance increased., double scraping was employed, until the advance had reached 350 feet, At this point a portion of the final conveyor was installed, with a scraper slide near the breast, T e drift was then advanced be scraping on to the conveyor until a sufficient distance had been driven to permit the installation of an additional 200 feet of conveyor. This proved to be a very efficient and economical means of moving the development rock to the shaft and obviated the need of using cars or an inclined skip way, At the present time 85 percet of tie entire mine output is being mined below the 1200 ft, level and is delivered to the shaft via the inclined conveyor. The system appears to be working as well and as economically as did the conveyor systemonthe 1200 ft, level.

INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers. Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960's. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. INTRODUCTION Shaft sinking represents a relatively small proportion of the activities involved in mine development. Because of this limited utilization, shaft sinking has been one of the most difficult functions to mechanize. Although shaft machines (muckers) were introduced more than 30 years ago, the first machines were low-capacity units, and machines of this type did not gain wide acceptance by the mining industry until the late 1950s. However, the increasing depth of underground mines and the es¬calating costs of labor have increased the benefits obtain¬able from high-speed shaft sinking. The result has been a growing need for high-capacity shaft machines. Most of the machines available at the present time have been developed by modifying existing equipment to increase the payload capacity and performance. AVAILABLE SHAFT MACHINES In general, shaft machines may be classified accord¬ing to the types of digging mechanisms and the mecha¬nisms of operation. The available digging mechanisms include clamshells, cactus grabs, front-end buckets, and backhoes. The mechanisms of operation can be classified as either pneumatic or hydraulic. Selection Criteria For efficient operation, the primary consideration in selecting a shaft machine is its capacity. The minimum capacity of the machine should match the capacity of the hoisting system at the ultimate depth of the shaft. In many cases, two machines may be needed to obtain a sufficient mucking capacity. The shaft dimensions and configuration often dictate the type of machine that may be utilized; for example, an overshot loader does not work well in a circular shaft that has a diameter of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Similarly, a single Cryderman mucker is not suitable for a large-diameter shaft, nor is it applicable where very high sinking buckets are to be used. Other factors for consideration include the degree of material fragmentation, the abrasiveness of the rock, and the amount of ground water that is inter¬sected. Machine Descriptions Riddell Mucker: The Riddell mucker, illustrated in Fig. 1, was first introduced in 1948. This is one of the most common shaft machines in the medium-capacity range. The Riddell mucker consists of a hoisting and traveling mechanism that operates a clamshell suspended on cables. The early machines operated with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) clamshell and had an hourly capacity of approximately 27 t (30 st). This type of shaft machine has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Essentially, the Riddell mucker consists of standard components, such as the pneumatic tugger hoists that operate the clamshell. The carriage is suspended on rails that also serve as the blasting set, located immediately below the shaft timbers. To effectively position the clam¬shell in the shaft, the operator controls the carriage travel by means of wheels that are driven by a pneu¬matic motor. The Riddell mucker most commonly is used in rec¬tangular timbered shafts. However, some units have been installed with circular rails, allowing them to work in circular concrete-lined shafts. A popular practice with many Riddell muckers is to increase the capacity through the use of larger clamshells, often ranging up to 0.76 m3 (1.0 cu yd), in conjunction with more powerful tugger hoists. In some large rectangular shafts, two Riddell units have been used side by side to achieve a sufficient capacity. Cryderman Mucker: The Cryderman mucker, illus¬trated in Fig. 2, is another common shaft machine in the low- to medium-capacity range. Developed in the early 1950s, it also has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Equipped with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) bucket, the Cryderman mucker has an hourly capacity of approximately 23 t (25 st). The Cryderman mucker is operated entirely by means of pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic telescopic boom. The boom is suspended from a sectional frame¬work that is usually located at one end of the shaft. INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. Therefore, depending on the specific use of any given pH regulator, special tests need to be run by the mill operator to determine factors such as: the specific technical goals to be accomplished by

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m
