This study investigated the performance of citric acid as lixiviant for cathode material from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Black mass containing 84.2 weight percent MNC (LiNi0.45Mn0.4Co0.15O2) and 15.8 weight percent LCO (LiCoO2) material was leached at solid-to-liquid ratios of 20, 50 and 100 g/L. Leaching with 1.5 M citric acid, 2 volume percent H2O2 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20 g/L at 95 °C extracted 90 percent Co, 95 percent Li, 94 percent Mn and 94 percent Ni within 20 min. At the highest solid-to-liquid ratio of 100 g/L with 1.5 M citric acid, 10 volume percent H2O2 and 95 °C, 84 percent Al, 84 percent Co, 87 percent Li, 86 percent Mn and 96 percent Ni were leached after 40 min, producing a leach solution containing 0.68 g/L Al, 20.0 g/L Co, 6.0 g/L Li, 13.6 g/L Mn and 19.3 g/L Ni. Using stepwise addition of H2O2, instead of initial bulk addition, did not significantly improve the leaching efficiency but did reduce the required leaching time. Temperature control of the reactor was also more manageable with stepwise addition of H2O2, and evolution of gas was less vigorous. It was observed that the leaching efficiencies of Co, Li and Mn decreased slightly at solid-to-liquid ratios of 50 and 100 g/L, while the leaching of Ni increased slightly. The solution leached at 20 g/L could be stored for six weeks without any spontaneous precipitation. However, solutions leached at 50 and 100 g/L showed changes in concentration after one month of storage, suggesting that processes that have a large material throughput and use high solid-to-liquid ratios around 100 g/L must ensure that the solutions are not stored for extended periods of time.

"Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

The resurgence of severe lung disease among U.S. coal miners has not only highlighted the need for improved dust controls, but also the need for an improved understanding of dust characteristics and monitoring strategies [1]. Following up on prior work by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to demonstrate a novel wet dust collection system on a roof bolter [2], the current study explores the effect of that system on dust characteristics and uses interlaboratory comparisons to comment on analytical methods. Results indicate the wet system did not appreciably affect the composition or size of respirable dust in the vicinity of the operating roof bolter. However, the system does appear to have substantial benefits for the operator. NIOSH has already shown it can reduce the respirable dust mass concentration to which the operator is exposed during dustbox cleanout [2,3], which is a frequent maintenance activity that can re-aerosolize dust, and new results here indicate the silica and silicates content in this dust may also be reduced, thereby reducing the overall hazard. Moreover, regarding analytical methods, excellent correlation was demonstrated between measurements of quartz mass, taken first by NIOSH and then by a university laboratory, using direct-on-filter Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. This method is the basis for envisioned “end of shift” silica monitoring (quartz is the predominant form of crystalline silica in coal mines) [4]. For particle-level analysis by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), there was more variability in results generated by two independent university laboratories.

In recent years, there has been a growing realization of the importance of ground water as a national resource and increasing concern that this resource be properly managed and protected from a variety of pervasive practices that endanger it. Aquifers have been adversely affected in every region of the country. In dealing w.ith the underground water program, EPA will have the following objectives: to protect human health, and to protect and conserve an important national resource. In pursuing these objectives, EPA will take economic consequences and other national objectives (e.g., energy) into account. EPA intends to pursue these objectives in full partnership with the States. Generally the States should retain the lead in protecting ground water.

"During the past nine years the number of cellular phones connected to a network has increased from 34 percent of the world’s population in 2005 to 93 percent in 2014. These phones are powered by a combination of materials including elements such as gold, silver, copper and rare earths. And, as more parts of the world become connected to networks, the number of phones being produced, and the elements they will need, will continue to increase. The demand comes as prices for these commodities are slumping and access to the commodities is getting more difficult, technically and socially.These mobile devices have connected people around the world in ways that could not have been imagined two decades before, and, ironically, this communication has strengthened opposition to the development of the mines that produce the very materials they need to operate.In his keynote address to the 2014 SME Arizona Conference at the JW Starr Pass Resort in Tucson, AZ, on Dec. 8, 2014, John O. Marsden, SME President and president of Metallurgium, spoke to more than 500 attendees about the challenge to produce the materials that society needs while at the same time challenging the general public’s perception of mining that is often inaccurate and less than favorable.Marsden highlighted the amount of raw materials that will be needed not just for phones, but also for things such as automobiles, including electric cars, as a way to illustrate the importance of mining. Even so-called green products such as Tesla cars, which require about 317 kg (700 lbs) of aluminum, 13 kg (30 lbs) of copper and 36 kg (80 lbs) of cobalt for their eco-friendly batteries, will need materials mining provides.These are some of the numbers that the general public is often unaware of. They are part of the necessary things that mining provides for society but are rarely reported on. Instead, it is the accidents like the tailings spill at the Mount Polley Mine in British Columbia and at the Buena Vista Mine (Sonora, Mexico) that grab headlines and stick in the minds of the public, adding more challenges to an industry that already has its own complex technical challenges to deal with."

Lightweight aggregates are classified as those minerals, natural rock materials, rock-like products, and byproducts of manufacturing processes that are used as bulk fillers in lightweight structural concrete, concrete building blocks, precast structural units, road surfacing materials, plaster aggregates, and insulating fill. Other uses include architectural wall covers, suspended ceilings, soil conditioners, and other agricultural uses (Mason, 1989). One unusual agricultural use recently reported was for bedding on a crocodile farm on the south coast of Natal. It seems that female crocodiles became upset because there was no vermiculite in which to lay their eggs due to the late arrival of a consignment of vermiculite. The vermiculite was being used as a substitute for river sand to nest crocodile eggs (Griffiths, 1989). The various lightweight aggregate materials may be classified into four groups as follows: 1. Natural Lightweight Aggregate Materials-prepared by crushing and sizing natural rock materials, such as pumice, scoria, tuff, breccia, and volcanic cinders. 2. Manufactured Structural Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing shale, clay, or slate in rotary kilns or on traveling grate sintering machines. 3. Byproduct Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by crushing and sizing foamed and granulated slag, cinders, and coke breeze. This group of lightweight materials, with the exception of slag, has become less significant and will not be discussed in this chapter. Other lightweight aggregates are beginning to appear in the marketplace. Some are the result of manufacturing processes on industrial byproducts and/or waste products, such as fly ash and incinerator residue (Bigner, 1992). 4. Manufactured Insulating Ultralightweight Aggregates-pre- pared by pyroprocessing ground vermiculite, perlite, and diatomite. The application of diatomite in brick and in extruded and aggregate forms has declined in recent years (Kadey, 1983) and will not be considered in this chapter. Lightweight aggregates for structural concrete and concrete masonry units, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (1986) consist of "aggregates of low density used to produce lightweight concrete, including: pumice, scoria, volcanic cinders, tuff and diatomite; expanded shale, clay, slate, perlite, vermiculite or slag; and end products of coal or coal combustion" (Mason, 1989). Lightweight aggregates are distinguished from other mineral aggregate materials by their lighter unit weights-1 281 to 1 602 kg/m3 or less for loosely packed lightweight aggregates-as com- pared to 2 002 kg/m3 or more for crushed stone, sand, gravel, air-cooled slag, and other common mineral aggregates. The specific gravities of these lightweight aggregates are also used to classify them for use in concrete; they range from the extremely light materials, used for insulative and non-structural concrete to expanded shale, clay, slate, and slags used for structural concrete. Vermiculite and perlite are sometimes referred to as super light- weights. Insulating concrete (non-load bearing) weighing as little as 240 kg/m3 can be made with these aggregates. Natural aggregates such as pumice, pumicite, and scoria are normally made into concrete weighing about 400 to 480 kg/m3. Expanded shale, clay, and slate produced in a rotary kiln make structural concrete ranging from 1 201 to 1 842 kg/m3. Expanded shale and clay produced by sintering make concrete that ranges from 1 442 to 1 922 kg/m3. Air-cooled slag produces concrete ranging from 2 162 to 2 403 kg/m3. The low density lightweight aggregates are used primarily for insulating purposes. They have relatively low compressive strength. The middle density aggregates are used for insulation and for fill. Those at the upper end develop excellent compressive strength and are used in many structural applications (Anon., 1971). In recent years, the production of lightweight aggregates in the United States for all uses (including insulation and construction materials) has averaged about 19 Mtpy (Table 1). The production and consumption of lightweight aggregate is closely tied to the fortunes of the construction industry and the need to construct energy efficient buildings. Recent years have seen the production of lightweight aggregate approach the levels of the early 1970s. The period of 1979 to 1981 was a low point in production levels. The low levels of production were caused by significantly higher plant energy costs due to the large amounts of fuel and energy used in the production of most types of lightweight aggregate. Lower levels of construction activity also affect production levels. This chapter focuses on the use of natural lightweight aggregates and manufactured insulating ultralightweight aggregates, and on both the production and use of manufactured structural light- weight aggregates. Some additional comments are made on byproduct materials. Separate commodity chapters on vermiculite, perlite, pumice, and volcanic cinders are elsewhere in the volume. Discussion of the commodities covered elsewhere in the book will be limited to observations on their utilization and relation to other lightweight aggregate materials.

Vehicle fires in underground mines pose a certain risk for which measures to prevent or mitigate the fires are highly important. Fire protection measures can be divided into active and passive measures, where active measures require an external power to work in the event of a fire, and passive measures could include an existing partition preventing fire spread. As passive fire protection does not rely on activation, it is expected to provide high reliability and a robust solution, and should be considered during the design process. This paper investigates passive fire protection measures that could be implemented in the design of mining vehicles. It was found that passive fire protection should include the use of several measures simultaneously to ensure fire protection throughout the different phases of a fire. Threshold distances for fuel components were calculated, and it was found that combining hydraulic hoses and electrical cables resulted in larger threshold distances. A pool fire along the underside of a vehicle will pose a certain risk, and passive measures should be focused on ignition prevention, making high demands on the insulation/shielding along the underside. Any occurring tire fire may pose a challenge, and the priority should be on preventing ignition. Potential measures include shielding the wheelhouse and applying fire-resistant sealings.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with medium-sized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in this study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.) wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.) wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.) wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1, and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.) wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods, particularly to address respirable silica dust, for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud.INTRODUCTION Surface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1% of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples) • 5.8% of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (9 out of 155 samples) • 7.3% of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (3 out of 41 samples) • 7.5% of blaster/shotfirer were overexposed to respirable silica dust (3 out of 40 samples) Of significant interest is an x-ray surveillance study recently completed under the NIOSH Enhanced Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (ECWHSP). This program offered free chest radiographs to surface coal miners in 16 states. Pneumoconiosis was found among 2.0% of the 2,328 screened miners with at least 1 year of mining tenure. Twelve miners had radiographic changes consistent with progressive massive fibrosis, and 9 of these 12 miners reported no underground mining tenure. All but 1 of the 9 miners worked at occupations that were in the vicinity of blasthole drilling, either as a driller, blaster, or blast crew member [1]."

INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.

Biodegradation of spodumene by Asnergillus niger has been investigated. This organism oxidizes sucrose to citric and oxalic acids (in approximately 50-sot proportions) which degrade the spodumene mineral. The kinetic effects of leach variables on the dissolution of lithium were determined. The maximum theoretically attainable rate of lithium extraction was calculated for the effect of pulp density, to be V : 3.01 x 10 kg m sand the corresponding constant value, K = 12.47% pulp density. The apparent activation energy of lithium extraction vas found to be ^E = 20.3 kJ and frequency factor A = 5.66 x 10 s for S-spodumene leaching by synthetic -3 citric and oxalic acids (each in 0.05 kmol m-3 concentrations).

Longwall coal mining in southern Illinois occurs beneath some of the best agricultural land in the U.S. This region is characterized by highly productive, nearly level, and somewhat poorly drained soils. Subsidence from longwall mining causes changes in surface topography which alters surface and subsurface hydrology. These changes can adversely affect agricultural land by creating wet or ponded areas that can be deleterious to crop production. While most subsided areas show little impact from subsidence, some areas experience total crop failure. Coal companies are required by law to mitigate subsidence damage to cropland. The objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of mitigation in restoring grain yields to their pre-mined levels. The research was conducted on sites selected to represent conventional mitigation techniques on the predominate soils in the area. Corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max.(L.) Merr] yields in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 from mitigated areas were compared to yields from nearby undisturbed areas. There was no significant (a=0.05) difference in soybean yields averaged over the four years. Average corn yields, however, were significantly lower than reference areas. The impact of subsidence and mitigation is variable and site specific. Results were also related to weather. In wet years, yields in mitigated areas tended to be depressed. This research demonstrated that mitigation of subsidence damage can be successful.

Metallurgical Accounting in the mineral processing industry transforms accumulated process data, including flow rates and assays, into a coherent information format. This is used to rapidly provide production reporting and key performance indications. A fully comprehensive and coherency of available data must be a component of any system expected to accomplish reconciliation in the mass balancing process. Quality issues are thus improved with such desired methods via a mass-balancing engine utilizing the results of measurements acquired by various on-line sensors, analyzers, and sophisticated laboratory equipment. Metallurgical Accounting, when accomplished through such an engine, provides high value information in a simple, straightforward, and simplified manner. Exceptional utility is then transparently available to authorized personnel for access to metallurgical accounting reports, production reports, mass balance results, performance indicators, and so on. This paper discusses how such information can be used to "drilldown" into each result set by consulting the data hierarchy to evaluate and validate calculations and input data used to produce the specific results being queried. The power of such a system resides in the full and true integration of all production and laboratory data. What is integrated are the data thus acquired via a single user interface, a single database, a single configuration tool, etc. From this comes the derivation of contextual information and its maintenance. It is possible to reduce metallurgical accounting and production reporting from possibly hours or even days to a matter of minutes. The result is maximization of information reliability and availability from masses of otherwise discrete and difficult to access key data.

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration. Minipiloting of the preconcentration and oxidation stages of the Porgera flowsheet are described. The influence of these processes on subsequent recovery of precious metals together with the technical and economic necessity of concentrate pretreatment prior to oxidation are discussed.

Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

"INTRODUCTION In carbonate rocks, it is difficult to characterize due to the high degree of heterogeneity in pore geometry. Carbonate rocks have various types of pore systems such as fractures and vugs, and this heterogeneity should be considered for more realistic prediction of oil production in carbonate reservoirs. This study carried out water flooding experiments using five carbonate rock samples in order to observe the change of physical properties. Firstly, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted for each carbonate samples by use of XRD and XRF to evaluate the mineral content. All samples are mainly composed of CaCO3 and after that, the ICP experiments were carried out for the water passing through the carbonate. As a result, it was possible to measure the quantity of CaCO3, MgO, Fe2O3 component in water and due to this effect, the permeability of carbonate was altered especially in the front part of the core. Finally, after the carbonate was saturated by 30 API crude oil, water injection to enhance the oil recovery was repeated and it was confirmed that the oil-producing characteristics are different depending on the dissolution characteristics of carbonate rock samples. CORE SAMPLE ANALYSIS Porosity and Permeability Experiment Porosity and permeability were measured. The procedures are as follows (Figure 1). 1. Measure the diameter and length of the dry core using Vernier caliper. 2. Put the core in the core holder, run vacuum pump until the inlet and outlet pressure gauge equal. 3. Saturate the core using ISCO pump to inject water at 650 psi 4. Measure the amount of water and calculate the porosity 5. Set up the outlet pressure at 500 psi. 6. The flow rate measure when the equilibrium 7. Calculate the permeability through Darcy’s Law. 8. Cutting of core upstream and downstream about 13cm, and measure the each of permeability."
