The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates world production of natural zeolites to be 2.7 Mt (3 million st) in 2013. China ranked ?rst with 2 Mt (2.2 million st), followed by the Republic of Korea at 230 kt (253,000 st) and Turkey at 50 kt (55,000 st). Japan?s production is reported to have increased as a result of zeolites, reportedly low grade local mordenites, being used to treat the low-level radioactive contaminants in the areas surrounding the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. China and other countries? high-volume, low-value construction applications, which include dimension stone, pozzolans and lightweight aggregate, are also included in production. This means the production data does not accurately indicate the quantities used in high-value added specialty applications. Consumption in the United States, according to USGS estimates, increased slightly, to an estimated 71.3 kt (78,400 st). Domestic uses for natural zeolites were, in decreasing order by tonnage, animal feed, pet litter, cement (primarily down-hole cement applications by the drilling industry), water purification, odor control, waste water cleanup, fungicide or pesticide carrier, gas absorbent, fertilizer carrier, oil absorbent, desiccant, catalyst and aquaculture. The six leading uses accounted for more than 70 percent of the domestic natural zeolite sales tonnage.

The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposure of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a lightweight, modular and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposure. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. Some mine rescue drills by The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, Wismut Mine Rescue and Front Range Mine Rescue helped to improve the system and highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is well-suited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to both protect miners from radon exposure and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

"The Chilean minerals industry faces a shortage of 27.000 new skilled professional by 2023. Enhancing the integration of women into the workforce is a possible solution. This study analyzes the state of women in the mining workforce over the past decade. Several key indicators are presented: percent in the workforce, salaries, career profiles, presence at management level, and participation in academia are studied. The study also analyzes the strategies used by government, industry, and universities to recruit and retain women for the minerals industry. The main results show that women represent 7.4% of the mining workforce in Chile and less than 1% of senior positions with a salary gap of approximately 30%. Systematically, women prefer professional programs in geology, chemistry, and environmental areas. The Chilean statistics are compared to data from the United States mining industry. INTRODUCTION The Chilean mining industry faces a significant shortage of professionals for the next decade which compromises competitiveness and productivity. The demand for human capital in mining depends on several factors. First, the age structure of workforce, which determines future retirement needs. Second, minerals market considerations, determining the amount and size of mining projects entering production in the coming years. Third, the evolution, positive or negative, of productivity, mainly driven by technology and innovation, and negatively affected by the declining ore grades. Finally, negative trends in lead times to production of mining projects, due to social opposition, changing regulations and other project contingencies, negatively affecting the demand for human capital. Regarding the supply of human capital, the fast increase in the technology level of the minerals industry and hence, the increase of technical qualification requirements of the human capital generates a rise in the time required for trade and university education of mining professionals, which may cause imbalances in the labor market. According to (Consejo Minero, 2014) human capital gap in Chile by 2023 will be around 27.000 workers for extractive, processing and maintenance jobs, which represents 14% of the current workforce (Figure 1)."

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.

"INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."

With more than 20 major mines extracting copper, gold, coal, molybdenum and lime, Arizona is recognized as one of the better mining jurisdictions, not just in the United States, but in the world. However, that is not to say the road to production is always paved with gold, or in many cases, copper. Earning the license to mine in Arizona is a complex process with years of paperwork and permitting before the first tons of ore are ever processed. Now, get the federal government involved and the process becomes even more complex, and the path to production can become even longer.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is prevalent in mechanized underground mines. Federal regulations are often not complied with effectively. Miners are also prone to ignoring administrative guidelines and/or personal protective equipment for hearing conservation. As a result, quality of life among experienced miners plummets while occupational risks increase at workplaces. This research focused on auxiliary fans used in underground mines. These fans work at high rotational speed and generate extremely high levels of noise in close proximity to miners. Silencers used are often of little effect due to poor maintenance. A new silencer is tried in the laboratory with the objective of easy maintenance and resulting reduction of noise exposure for miners.

It highlights the impact of continuous airflow monitoring on improving model calibration. The paper discusses an experimental study at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to understand the use of continuous airflow data for model improvement. It also addresses practical problems in calibration and tuning using this data, including analysis of air velocity sensor fluctuations and application of sensor location correction factors for accurate average air velocity.

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. Large-scale groundwater withdrawals are necessary to depressurize a confined aquifer system allowing the dry open-pit mining of the overlying phosphate ore. The extent of the existing and planned groundwater development led to the establishment by the State of North Carolina of Capacity Use Area No. l. Groundwater use in the Capacity Use Area is regulated by a permitting system. A two-dimensional finite-difference ground- water flow model was developed for North Carolina Phosphate Corporation. The aim of the model is to aid the Corporation in matters relating to permitting by serving as a predictive tool. The model can be used to project regional water level impacts resulting from various scenarios of depressurization pumping.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.

The objective of this investigation was to study the electrokinetic behavior of oxidized coals to indicate the feasibility of separating oxidized coals from ash materials and pyrite by an mine flotation process. The effects of soluble inorganic electrolyte products from coal oxidation were also examined. The electrokinetic behavior of coals of different rank and degree of oxidation were studied by an electrophoreses technique. Generally, increasing the oxidation increases the negative value of the zeta-potential and decreases the isoelectric point (IEP). Flotation results indicate that the flotation recovery increases with decreasing pH values, and that with ferrous sulfate at pH 6.5 the flotation recovery is optimum while the pyrite was depressed. Comparing the flotation results with the electrokinetic results verified that in the presence of ferrous sulfate, the maximum hydrophobicity of oxidized coal with dodecylamine and frother is near its IEP which is around pH 6.5 to 7.0.

Mines are constantly trying to improve production processes by optimizing work cycles, reducing operational delays, minimizing costs, controlling equipment utilization, and preventing occupational hazards. Currently, advances in digital mining technologies within the concepts of 5G and Industrial Touch Internet are allowing better control and monitoring of underground mining equipment, with centralized control systems that unify data analysis for proper decision making. A wireless 5G-based platform for controlling and monitoring systems for underground mine operations can be designed over a comprehensive layout in where bandwidth selection, sensor location, Wi-Fi repeaters and power distribution are put together to build a successful supervisory system. In order to confirm the validation of these concepts, a case study is proposed for a medium-sized underground mine with a multi-level network which includes tablets managed by production supervisors, along with other data collection devices installed in semi-autonomous mining equipment, collecting, and distributing data in near-real time, with interconnection to support and services areas on the surface.

The Meadow River No. 1 Preparation Plant, owned by Sewell Coal Company, a subsidiary of the Pittston Company, was commissioned in the spring of 1974. The plant is designed to process 400 TPH of 5" x 0 raw coal. The 5" x 114'l fraction is processed in a Heavy Medium Vessel with the 114 x 28M reporting to Deister Tables for cleaning. The 28M x 0 fraction is cleaned in flotation cells, with the froth going to clean coal vacuum filters and the tailings to a static thickener where the underflow is reclaimed on Refuse Filters prior to disposal. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the noise exposure in that particular environment. The new Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to White Point Manifold. The tunnel will be approximately 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18 ft (5.5 m). The TBM is designed to cope with high water pressure up to 10 bar. The geotechnical challenges are due to the heterogeneous subsurface conditions: in the first half of the alignment, the tunnel runs through soils with a low overburden under urban areas, and, in the second half, the tunnel runs through extremely weak, intensely faulted rock masses with high overburden. Following an overview of the project, this paper focuses on the northern portion of the alignment and presents a decision-making procedure developed during pre-excavation phase in order to cope with the expected heterogeneous conditions during mining. The risk assessment and the TBM operational design of the southern portion will be dealt with in a future paper.

Bong Mining Co. Ltd. in Liberia, West Africa, operates an iron ore open pit some 60 miles northeast of Monrovia. The production is at present about 40,000 t/d (metric tons/day) from which about 18,500 t/d concentrate with 65.5% Fe is produced. The ore waste ratio is about 1: 1.5 to 1:2. The technical layout and the equipment are very similar to those in many modern open-pit operations as described by Jacobs and Thomson (1967). As described by Lersch in detail (1966), the deposit is a very irregular one. The quality of the ore changes within very short distances with regard to both physical conditions (hardness) and chemical properties. Very soft and very hard ore as well as high-grade and low-grade ore are found adjacent to each other. In addition, there are enclosures of sterile rocks. For the purpose of identification and production scheduling, 12 different types of ore are distinguished.

"Gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) are widely used in underground coal mines for longwall gob degasification purposes. GVBs are often drilled within 10 to 30 m above the top of the coal bed into the fractured zone, completed with 20 cm (8 in.) diameter casing and 60 m of slotted pipe at the bottom. The purpose of this completion strategy is to create a pressure sink to capture the emissions before they can enter into the underground workplace. For GVBs to work effectively, they must be drilled close enough to the working areas to capture methane from the fractured zone while the setting depth must be kept above the caved zone to minimize the amount of ventilation air that is drawn into the GVBs. Well completion parameters are important for creating safe working conditions. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies will be presented to analyze the effect of different practices for GVBs completion parameters for methane extraction, formation of explosive gas zones in the gob and methane concentrations at the longwall face and tailgate. Authors have identified the optimum completion parameters for GVBs, which can maximize the benefit and minimize fire and explosion risk. INTRODUCTION Coal mines may be considered gassy based on the presence of CH4. Gas from the mined coalbed or from rider seams above or below the mined coalbed can migrate into the gob and then potentially move towards the working areas. In longwall coal mines with high methane emissions, sufficient ventilation and additional methane control measures are usually required to reduce the methane concentration in working areas to below statutory levels. Several techniques or combinations of techniques are available to control the methane hazard. These may include mine face ventilation to dilute methane, coal bed degasification, nitrogen injection into the gob to render a methane atmosphere inert and the use of gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs). Longwall face ventilation and dilution alone can only handle methane emissions up to a certain amount. When methane emissions exceed the face ventilation capacity, additional control measures are required. Drilling horizontal or vertical methane drainage holes into the coal seams as well as gob ventilation boreholes from the surface into the gob area to extract methane are common practices. GVBs are usually drilled from the surface above the longwall panel ahead of mining. When the face moves outby the GVBs and the gob begins to form, methane production starts from the boreholes. It is important to control the performance of GVBs to maintain a safe working environment in the mine. The performance of GVBs depends on multiple factors, including borehole location, length and diameter of slotted casing, setting depth of casing above the coal seam being mined, wellhead vacuum pressure, and permeability of caved-fractured zones."

When the Henderson Project is completed in 1975, it will become one of the Free World's largest primary molybdenum producers. The Henderson Mine will be located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are currently estimated to be 303,000,000 tons with a grade of 0.49% MoS2. The mill and tailing area will be located approximately 14.5 miles from the mine in the Williams Fork Valley, which is on the western slope of the Continental Divide. Ore haulage from the mine to the mill will be by ten miles of underground railroad and 4.5 miles of surface railroad. The concentrator has been designed to mill 30,000 tons per day and will yield approximately 50,000,000 pounds of contained molybdenum per year. This paper is concerned with the tailing and water supply system for the Henderson Project and in particular the environmental considerations affecting their design.

Performing a magnetizing roast in a furnace or kiln is a well-established technology. However, the use of microwave heat for the magnetization of hematite in the beneficiation of ferruginous bauxite is a new approach. This paper reports on an investigation of this procedure, which is followed by comminution and magnetic separation. The results of this investigation indicate that a nonmagnetic product containing 80% A1203 and 2.5% Fe203 with a recovery of 80% can be made from a crude bauxite ore containing 55.9% A1203 and 5.6% Fe203. This product is suitable for refractory use. The mechanism is explained by the ability of the microwave radiation to heat specific points within the bauxite. These heat-specific points are at the location of iron minerals. In a reduced atmosphere, the microwaves promote faster conversion of the iron minerals to a magnetic phase, which improves the magnetic-separation process.
