The operating lifetime, or production rate, selected for a mining project is among the most important factors influencing the design and ultimate economic success of the project. An incorrectly-determined lifetime can lead to the erroneous rejection of projects as uneconomic as well as the suboptimal exploitation of producing properties. This paper examines the calculation of the optimal lifetime using both traditional discounted cash flow and recently-proposed option pricing techniques. Using each method, the production rate is determined as that rate at which the net present value of the project is maximized.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

Particle collection is considered to occur by particle collision with the bubble followed by the particle sliding over the bubble during which attachment may occur. Collision is quantified by a collision efficiency, EC. The existing model for EC is extended by including particle inertia. Attachment is quantified by an attachment efficiency, EA calculated as the fraction of particles which reside on the bubble for a time greater than the induction time. These calculations use recent data on the liquid velocity distribution over the upper half of rigid spheres. Collection efficiency, EK is given by EK = EC ? EA. Detachment is not considered. The mode is examined and shown to agree with much experimental data. For example the maximum observed in recovery vs particle size (d) can be explained as E increases with increasing d , while EA decreases. The decrease in selectivity at fine sizes is in accord with the model result that for dp < 5µm, EA ? 100% (i.e. EK ? EC) almost regardless of induction time. A decrease in bubble size does increase EK but does not improve selectivity. A high particle density (> 5g/cm3) is shown to cause a sharp peak in recovery vs size and a decreased maximum size of floatability. Finally, the possible effects of bubble and particle concentration are explored.

The economics of exploration target selection can be measured ultimately only against a company&apos;s success at developing mines. In the following brief history of the mine acquisitions of one company, Placer Development Limited, I try to identify the principal targeting parameters and the principal skills that came into play for each property and examine how these have changed with time. The process of target selection in exploration is directed: - first by corporate investment criteria which define objectives and acceptable levels of risk for pursuit of those objectives; - second by experience and skills which permit us to minimize risk; and - third by anticipation of future events relating to ore discoveries and changes in external risk factors.

The concept of "heat recuperation" for the grate-kiln pelletizing system was first implemented at the Sydvaranger plant in Norway in 1974. Essentially, heat recuperation involves bringing hot air from the second stage of the pellet cooler to the drying zone to increase drying-air temperature to the maximum limit. &apos;Burner-fuel savings result from a lower kiln secondary-air mass flow at a higher temperature. Because of the fuel benefits achieved at Sydvaranger, heat recuperation has been included innumerous new grate-kiln plants built since then, and some older plants have been retrofitted for heat recuperation. In recent years there has been much confusion about the fuel benefits of heat recuperation. To answer some of the questions, a mathematical model was developed and plant tests were conducted at Minntac Phase 111. Minntac is a magnetite taconite concentrating and pelletizing plant, and Phase III has two indurating lines. This paper presents the results of the studies and plant tests.

This paper presents the results from an extensive research program on the vacuum filtration of iron ore slurries. Experiments were conducted with the addition of several types of flocculants and surfactants. The filtration response of the slurries was studied in terms of the cake formation rate and the residual cake moisture. The Israel Mining Industries Institute for Research and Development has developed, during recent years, a number of new processes for fertilizer materials. Their phosphoric acid processes, however, are capable of producing an acid of far higher quality than that normally associated with fertilizer grade acid. This paper will discuss two of these processes showing the quality attainable and the capital and operating costs for, U. S. conditions. The Standard IMI Process is based on the acidulation of phosphate rock with hydrochloric acid and involves solvent extraction for the separation of high quality, phosphoric acid from the resulting solution. The IMI Purification Process applies the same solvent extraction technique to the purification of a wet process phosphoric acid from sulfuric acidulated rock. IMI has built and operated a semi-works scale demonstration plant for the standard process. The first commercial plant was started up in; Japan in 1962. This small seven metric ton per day plant is currently producing a furnace quality acid. A larger 50 metric ton per day plant is nearing completion in Brazil. Another 50 metric ton per day plant is under design while a large plant with a capacity in excess of 150 metric ton per day is in the planning stage. Both of the latter facilities are for Israel.

I. CONCEPT MARTA&apos;s Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta&apos;s central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta&apos;s showcase business/commercial complex. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling dust and gas. Redirecting all the air toward the face equally up both sides of the machine increased the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all of the air was redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face, at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all of the scrubber exhaust was redirected toward the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

A surprisingly large mining-induced seismic event occurred in the LKAB Kiirunavaara Mine (Sweden) on 18 May, 2020 at 03:11 (local time). The estimated moment magnitude was 4.2. The event caused extensive damage in a large section of the mine. The production in the area is not yet resumed, even by the beginning of 2022 (~20 months after the event). The Kiirunavaara Mine has one of the world’s largest underground seismic systems with approximately 253 geophones. The in-mine records of the event showed a very complex character with a several sub-events. The event was also well recorded by seismic stations out to over 9,000 km distance. Data from the underground and regional seismic systems were analysed to define and compare basic source parameters such as hypocenter location, seismic moment, as well as the seismic moment tensor. The data from the in-mine seismic system was used to study the development of the seismic process and to define elementary seismic sub-sources together with the official hypocenter location.

After a brief definition of asbestos and a review of regulations, the elements of asbestos dust control are outlined for various asbestos manufacturing industries. To prevent the asbestos dust to become airborne, the general procedure is to control the dust at the source by enclosure and exhaustion. The asbestos dust is collected and removed from the air with bag filter collectors of high efficiency (better than 99%) to ensure that the air emitted to the general environment or returned to the workplace are below the existing asbestos emissions regulations. Dust control systems should be regularly inspected and serviced to maintain at all times the efficiency and reliability of the equipment. Other effective procedures for asbestos dust control are also considered.

Current steel consumption for grinding media, mill liners and rods in North America runs in excess of 400,000 tpy in the mineral processing industries. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient&apos;s life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation has provided Bureau of Mines researchers with an opportunity to investigate the hydrology of leaching an in place copper ore deposit. Hydrologic investigations of underground in situ copper leaching are being jointly conducted under a cooperative agreement. The hydrologic concerns of leaching operations at the Casa Grande mine focus on maintaining adequate solution injection and recovery rates, and on distributing the injected leach solution effectively within the ore deposit. Hydrologic considerations underlying these concerns relate to the permeability of the oxide ore zone during leaching, the unsaturated condition of the deposit prior to leaching, and the constraints imposed on in situ hydrologic design by the underground mine setting. The investigation involves monitoring of flow and pressure conditions in 58 injection and recovery wells, estimating permeability conditions using a hydrologic model, and on-site testing of hydrodilation and airlift pumping. Transient, fracture-controlled permeability is determined to be the dominant hydrologic consideration. A statistical modeling procedure has been developed for estimating changes in permeability during leaching. Flexibility in well design and operation is essential for accommodating the changes in fracture permeability that occur during leaching.

Completion of a railroad to the high Tibetan Plateau in Central China has now made it economical to exploit its mineral reserves. Lead and zinc mines are now being established. A potash plant to produce 40,000 tons per year KC1 is now in operation. Plans to produce 200,000 tons per year by 1987 are being implemented. Pilot drilling for oil and natural gas have proved up reserves. Slaughter houses are being constructed to ship yak, mutton and beef from the endless grasslands on the plateau. Research Centers in Xining and Golmud have been completed for the sole purpose of increasing technology and exploitation of the Tsaidam Basin and surrounding area.

A comprehensive strategic planning model has been developed for the phosphate strip mining and chemical operations at White Springs, Florida. The computerized model covers ore body modeling, production simulation and financial analysis. Several innovative features in the model include using NPV techniques in ore body block economics, adapting the floating cone method to a floating template for generating dragline mining units automatically, using interactive graphics for designing mining units, and a dragline move economics algorithm for automatic scheduling of mining unit assignments and moves. Simulation of chemical plant production uses linear programming and concentrate inventory levels control mine operating schedules.

In 1968 three historical rockbursts had occurred at Bibai Coal Mine in Hokkaido. At the time they had been observed by several seismic observatories as natural earthquakes away more than 100km from Bibai City. These facts taught us that the occuerrence of failure yielded in underground opening that was accompanied with seismic wave could be observed by seismometer on the surface. After two years from this desaster, the study concerning to microseismic events generated from underground mining panels has been begun by researchers with heart-throb.

The mined coal bed and surrounding strata are both sources of methane which must be control led during mining. During developmental mining, the mined coalbed is the primary methane source; during retreat longwall mining, the primary methane source is the overlying strata. Underground technology is being developed to control both sources. This technology involves drilling long horizontal drainage holes into the mined coal bed and relatively short holes (less than 152 m or 500 feet) into the overlying strata. Because of the large volumes of methane that flow from such drainage holes and the limited ventilation available for in-mine dilution, underground pipelines are used to transport the drained gas to the surface. Large- scale in-mine degasification demonstrations showed reductions in methane flow of up to 70% during developmental mining.

Adsorption experiments were conducted at two different solids loadings, to investigate the mechanism of oleate adsorption on apatite. Adsorption density at pH 10 was found to be dependent on solids loading in an oleate concentration region where surface precipitation could occur. Analysis of adsorption isotherms indicated three distinct regions of adsorption. In the region I (below the region of calcium oleate precipitation), molecular adsorption was observed. Simultaneous molecular adsorption and surface precipitation occurred in region II, while surface precipitation was predominant in region III along with some bulk precipitation. Correlation between flotation of apatite with sodium oleate and the mode of oleate interaction with the surface is established.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of phosphate ore with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity flow mixing required less residence-time, but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices will be discussed.
