Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. The effect of Federal restrictions on Federal mineral estate in Alaska and the Western States is being addressed by systematic, State-by- State studies. The Bureau of Mines has inventoried and classified 3.5 million sq km (876 million acres) of land, section-by-section, according to 1) mineral ownership, 2) availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by Federal restrictions, and 31, areas containing mines and mineral resources. The availability of Federal land for exploration and development is spatially compared to areas containing mines and mineral resources. The methodology and overall results of the studies are presented.

Even with conservative mine planning, rib instability can progress from a nuisance to a major safety hazard. This Bureau of Mines paper examines the mechanisms of progressive rib failure in high mine openings and discusses techniques to control rib slabbing. A field test site in a longwall mine was instrumented to investigate rib behavior during mining. While data analysis showed minor pillar dilation. sporadic zones of progressive rib instability were detected that culminated in eventual rib failure. The failure occurred despite conservative pillar dimensions and shallow depth. Models were used to demonstrate the mechanisms of rib failure and then evaluate the influence of support and other mine-related parameters on rib behavior.

Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed coal mine blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The data were examined to determine the causes, frequency, and severity of accidents in an effort to point out the most dangerous aspects of coal mine blasting. Accident data for the 14 years from 1971 through 1984 show that there has been a total of 43 fatal and 926 nonfatal blasting accident victims in surface and under- ground coal mining. This is an average of 3.1 fatal and 66.1 non- fatal injuries each year. Underground coal mining accounted for 60.5% of the fatal and 78.7% of the nonfatal accidents involving explosives and breaking agents in coal mining. In addition, since 1970 there have been 53 fatal and 20 nonfatal injuries that occurred when explosives were the ignition source for dust and/or methane explosions in underground mines. Abstracts from 297 accidents that occurred from 1978 through 1984 were also examined to determine accident causes. Most accidents occur during scheduled blasting, and failure of the blast area security system is the leading cause. Blast area security problems in surface mining are failure to clear the blast zone, failure of personnel to follow instructions, inadequate guarding, and failure to retreat to a safe location and/or take adequate cover. Other common causes in surface mining include premature blasts, excessive flyrock, and misfires. In addition to the above causes, accidents in underground coal mining can be due to rockfalls triggered by the blast, unexpected breakthroughs, fumes, and incidents associated with Airdox-type systems.

This paper describes the results of field tests conducted on a 5x25m bench face to evaluate several new concepts for improving smooth wall blasting. These ideas involved the use of notched boreholes to direct the fractures and unconventional types and placements of explosives. The notches were made with a mechanical broaching tool, a water jet and with shaped charges. Borehole pressures were measured with an inexpensive and expendable pressure transducer developed for this program. The testing showed that at hole spacings 38% greater than normal practice, notched holes with half the normal loading density produced equivalent results.

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. In modeling of hindered-settling bed separators, the published separation mechanisms are based on differences of particle density and size distributions, without the details of complexity of particles-liquid interactions. A fluid dynamic model for the separator is developed using Euler-Lagrange approach of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Fluid motion is obtained from solving the movement of liquid governing equations. The damping effect on flow pat-terns caused by the movement of particles resulted in liquid-particle coupling is included in the model. Effects of particle size, and particle density compositions, feed rate, feed water flow rate, upward fluidizing water flow rate, etc., are simulated in the 2-D separation model. Flow pattern effects on the separation of fine particles in the separators with center downward-flow and side cross-flow feed systems are investigated.

In late November 2010, a Laotian landmark was achieved for the country?s first tunnel boring machine - (TBM) driven tunnel. Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna celebrated the breakthrough of a 7.6-m- (25.1-ft-) diameter Robbins single shield TBM for a hydroelectric tunnel on the Nam Theun River. The Theun Hinboun expansion project and 5.5 km (3.4 miles) headrace tunnel will bring much needed power in-creases to Laos and Thailand. . ?Since this is the country?s first machine, it has awakened people?s curiosity and interest. We had experienced Italian and Chinese crew members, but we also trained many Lao workers during the course of the project, as this was something they had not seen before,? said Luca Barbàra, Far East Manager for CMC di Ravenna. The machine broke through on Nov. 21 into an exit shaft close to the intake structure on the river. The machine is now being disassembled and removed - CMC hopes to use it on upcoming projects in the region. Due to the current rainy season and relative low level of the tunnel, the last 100 m (330 ft) up to the intake structure will be completed using drill-and-blast after the waters recede below the tunnel invert.

THE UNIT process of adsorption involves two steps: 1) Loading of the adsorbent. 2) Recovery of metal values from the adsorbent. Charcoal is the adsorbent commonly used in extractive metallurgy. The discovery of the adsorptive power of charcoal from solutions is generally accredited to Lowitz (1785), who observed that several dissolved organic substances were precipitated on charcoal. Graham was the first to demonstrate that inorganic substances were also adsorbed on charcoal. In 1830, he reported that iodine dissolved in KI solution was adsorbed on charcoal. The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress (IMVC) was held May 17-22,1997, in Pittsburgh, PA. This marked the second time that the IMVC was held in the United States. The first congress, organized in 1975 by the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa, was held in Johannesburg. Since then, the meetings have been held every four or five years, with the 1979 meeting being held in Reno, NV. This was followed by Harrogot, England, in 1984; Brisbane, Australia, in 1988; and Johannesburg, South Africa, again in 1992. The IMVC provides an international forum in the field of mine ventilation for the purpose of sharing technology and experience. The meetings are attended by ventilation engineers, academics, consultants, government employees and vendors interested in mine ventilation. As was evident from this meeting, significant progress has been made in the field of mine ventilation. However, disasters continue to occur around the world and long-term health problems continue to affect workers. So there is a need for further improvements in ventilation technology. The highlight of the conference was the technical sessions in which more than 80 papers were presented by authors from more than 20 countries. In addition to the technical sessions, the conference featured field trips to a number of mine properties throughout the United States. Five short courses were offered on topics ranging from respirable-dust control to mine fires and explosions. The conference also featured a trade show. It exhibited the latest advances in ventilation equipment, computer application software, consulting and engineering services, and health and safety equipment.

An Ore bed magnetic liner element is made of permanent ceramic magnets embedded in a rubber molding. (See figure 1) They are difficult and expensive to manufacture correctly. Therefore, the lining for a complete mill is expensive, as high as 400% more than conventional rubber liners. The magnets are not very resistant to impact as they are very brittle. Mills of 12 feet or more can use only I inch balls; mills under 12 feet can use balls of 1-1/2 inches. These liners are therefore used in regrind applications with small balls or in secondary pebble mills. Rubber liners for these applications last a long time, so if life was the only consideration, the pay back for these liners would be longer than the life of the mine. The Ore bed liner and its bed of ball chips or magnetic ore is relatively thin and the surface of this bed has a high coefficient of friction. The liners are made so that opposing poles are situated next to each other and that the mill shell and the bed of ore or ball chips completes the magnetic circuit. (See figure 2) The combinations of these properties results in a very efficient liner. Due to the low profile of this bed, there is no material that is lifted too high, so we have a very compact charge with very high attrition, good for fine grinding. These liners have shown a 10% ball consumption reduction and a 10% lower power draw for the same capacity. Due to the magnetic orientation, the bed is formed in a wave shape along the lines of magnetic force. Tests conducted at a copper mine in the southwest United States have confirmed these findings. The mills where the liners were tested are 10.5 feet by 16 feet Hardinge regrind mills operating as overflow ball mills.

The prototype of an expert system, designed to assist layout planning of face operations, is presented. By specific combination of knowledge-based and conventional EDP techniques it has been possible to extend the known Kepner-Tregoe method up to the determination of mature layout solutions in difficult planning cases. It has been proven that the presented strategy - which can be applied to any kind of problem with similar structure - is apt to provide efficient EDP support for handling complex mining problems. Such support goes far beyond the purely numeric evaluation of envisaged alternatives.

The Mercur Gold Mine is located 56 km (35 air miles) southwest of Salt Lake City in north central Utah. In July 1981 Getty Mining Company made the decision to put Mercur into production. The first gold bar was poured in April 1983. This paper provides details on: 1) the history of the camp, 2) past production, 3) geology of the deposit, 4) the exploration and development program, 5) ore reserve estimates, 6) detailed geologic pit mapping, 7) production blasthole sampling techniques and 8) the use of geostatistics (kriging) in handling assays and gold extractions to produce the required mill feed.

Back analysis is a very important procedure for proper understanding of physical processes. Back analysis can be used to establish the role of different factors, define parameters to be calculated and formulate the behavior of natural or physical processes based on field experimental results. It is evident that, in order to obtain the necessary data for back analysis, field observations are required. For the Michailovsky region (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, KMA) the long-term strength characteristics of the clay covering the quarry slopes were established with the help of back landslide calculations. The obtained data allowed quantification of the shearing resistance parameters at the presence or absence of intermittent dips of discharge in the pit bank massif structures. Based on the results of investigation for material composition, strength and deformation of finely dispersed (clay-chalk) deposits in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly including measuring of the settlements of filled structures, complex probing and laboratory determination of water-physical and mechanical properties of "man-made" soils, engineering-geological zoning of filled structures was carried out.

Cyclones installed in three closed- circuit grinding systems were changed from conventional, vertical mounting to horizontal mounting with a favorable improvement in classification efficiency. In two of the installations, apex plugging problems were eliminated because horizontal mounting permit- ted the use of much larger apex orifices. Marked reduction in circulating load was accompanied by greatly reduced maintenance requirements for the cyclone and the cyclone feed pump in one of the installations.
