Respirable dust poses long-term health issues to personnel working in mining and civil projects where mechanized mining and tunneling machines are used for hard rock excavation. Machines, such as longwall shearers, roadheaders, or continuous miners, use consumable picks to cut rock. However, rock dust is generated in the work environment each time the pick tip contacts the rock surface. Additionally, the generated dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production, such as at transfer points. The purpose of this study is to characterize respirable dust particles generated at the pick tip at two stages of pick wear: new and moderately worn. Understanding dust characteristics in terms of concentration, size distribution, and particle shape throughout the life-cycle of the pick will provide a basis to mine and tunnel operators for changing out picks to mitigate dust generation at the source. This paper discusses the dust characteristics generated from preliminary full-scale cutting tests in a laboratory of an igneous rock block cut with conical picks at new and moderately worn levels of wear. The moderately worn pick generated a size distribution that favored smaller particle sizes compared to the new pick. The moderately worn pick also generated more overall dust, as the concentration level in mg/m3 was over double the amount of the new pick. Lastly, both picks generated particles that had similar aspect ratios and roundness measures.

The energy problem of the U. S; was emphasized by the oil embargo of late 1973 and early 1974 and it seemed for a time that the Federal Government, under pressure from the general public, might take some corrective action. However, this was not the case. With the gasoline lines gone and an apparent plentiful supply of petroleum products, public concern quickly dissipated., This country is more vulnerable to an oil embargo today than we were in 1973-1974 and this fact should be of concern to all our people. Since 1968, we have used oil and natural gas at a much more rapid rate than we have been able to find new domestic sources; thus, there is an increasing gap between domestic production and consumption and we have filled the gap with ever increasing oil' imports. These imports have increased at an alarming rate in the recent past, some 58 percent in 1976 compared with 1975. Imports are nearing 8 million barrels per day. Then, by applying some simple arithmetic, at $12 per barrel, the resulting trade deficit is $96 million per day or $35 billion per year. Obviously, this cannot be tolerated by our economy over a long period of time. Historically, we have shifted from one fuel to another as is shown in this slide. In 1850 about 90 percent of our fuel requirements came from direct combustion of wood, by 1900 we shifted to coal for 70 percent of our fuel, and now about 78 percent of fuel requirements comes from oil and natural gas. The difference is that the previous shifts were voluntary and the one facing us now is of necessity.

Respect for the people is one of the main values of S&B. Such respect needs to be manifested by actions ensuring the bodily and spiritual integrity of personnel in pursuing their work. The ultimate target is to achieve zero accidents by developing the culture and infrastructure required to support it. Within this framework, the following proactive safety practices were introduced in 2004 and are implemented at S&B Greek sites: (a.) Management Safety Visits (MSVs) of shop floor operations to address safety attributes of work guidelines, (b.) Monitoring compliance with critical work guidelines, using a ?safety barometer? tool. The proactive nature of both above systems, facilitates communication with employees on safety behaviors and their adoption in our facilities at Milos and Fokis, has been successful. Above all, these practices corroborate the management?s concern for the people and its commitment to continuously improve the working environment.

"Heap leaching is responsible for approximately 21 percent — 3.9 million metric tonnes — of copper production and 9 percent — 270 metric tonnes or 8.7 million ounces — of gold production worldwide. Given metal price assumptions of $2.25/lb for copper and $1,250/oz for gold, these portions of global production generate revenues of $19 billion and $11 billion, respectively. For heap leaching operations, small changes in metal extraction efficiency drive substantial changes in operating cash flow margins and affect project viability. Variances in actual metal production from budgetary forecast estimates can mean the difference between success (value creation) and failure (value destruction) for a heap leach project. Despite the importance of heap leaching for copper, gold and silver production worldwide, there are no clear standards or guidelines for developing heap leach metal production forecasts. There is considerable variation among copper and gold producers that apply heap leaching technology as to how such modeling and forecasting is applied at the operational level. There are a variety of different modeling approaches that can be utilized for this purpose. However, these vary in cost, complexity, time to implement, accuracy and credibility. This paper explores the options available for heap leach modeling, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, and provides guidelines/recommendations for an effective approach to modeling metal production at existing or planned heap leach operations. The paper also provides expected ranges of variation between actual and modeled production.Introduction and backgroundHeap leaching is fundamentally different from other methods used in the processing and extraction of gold, silver, and copper and other base metals. Considered globally, the technique represents a relatively modest portion of production compared with the primary technologies applied for copper and gold recovery. Approximately 21 percent of copper production is attributable to heap leaching techniques, as opposed to 79 percent by conventional crushing, milling, flotation, smelting and refining. For gold, about 9 percent of global production is obtained from heap leaching, compared with over 90 percent by various combinations of crushing, milling, gravity concentration, flotation and/or agitated cyanide leaching processes or, in the case of placer deposits, by direct gravity concentration and/or amalgamation. In cases where heap leaching is the primary source of metal production, the ability to accurately forecast metal production may be the difference between commercial success and failure for a project or operation. Heap leaching — of crushed or run-of-mine ore — is also commonly applied as a secondary process to treat lower-grade ores from a given deposit, such as at Chuquicamata in Chile, Cerro Verde in Peru and Bagdad in Arizona for copper extraction and at Twin Creeks and Carlin, both in Nevada, for gold. In such cases, heap leaching provides incremental revenue to supplement the primary process. Variances between actual and forecast metal production from heap leaching as a secondary process are typically tolerated and absorbed within the overall site metallurgical balance. In either case, accurate production modeling and forecasting creates significant value for heap leaching projects, is essential for managing production expectations — timing and volumes — and is likely to be a critical success factor for most heap leach projects."

"Building and operating tunnels has been a highstakes endeavor in terms of costs, complexity, safety and impact on contractors, owners and the public for a long time. There are many variables that need to be closely monitored and managed to construct a tunnel on-time, on-budget and safely. Once built, there are also many elements that need to be monitored and managed to operate a tunnel safely and efficiently.Fundamentally, the risks to the safe and efficient construction and operation of a tunnel are a function of the degree of harm and the likelihood of the harm occurring. From a cyber security perspective, risk assessments used to inform decision makers and support risk responses are typically based on identification of relevant threats; internal and external vulnerabilities; the impact that may occur given the potential for threats to exploit vulnerabilities and the likelihood that harm will occur. This article focuses on creating awareness of vulnerabilities associated with technology used in tunnel construction and operation and some of the challenges associated with remediation of these vulnerabilities. As we all know, technology has been evolving at an accelerating pace and infiltrating every aspect of our lives in new and often exciting ways. In the world of tunneling, sensors and systems that provide position and time have become accurate, rugged and cost-effective enough to come out of the research labs and into the equipment and systems used every day. There are many opportunities to employ connected computing devices and sensors to costeffectively capture, integrate and analyze key data with minimal latency to manage risk better, improve safety and avoid surprises."

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

"Coal bumps, also referred to as dynamic failure events or coal bursts (Lawson, Weakley, and Miller, 2016), continue to be a hazard in underground coal mines. While current design methods have significantly reduced the occurrence of coal bumps, they have not been completely eliminated. This paper investigates a correlation between coal compositional components, coal molecular structure, and probability of coal bumps in an effort to deepen understanding of coal behavior in an effort to reduce hazards in underground coal mines.Samples from the Penn State Office of Coal (PSOC) Department of Energy Coal Samples (DECS) were obtained for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis using the KBr pellet method. Peaks indicative of the coal molecular structures were obtained using spectral integration software. These data, combined with published elemental data, were compared to historic bump occurrence in order to establish a possible correlation. Finally, results based on multivariate analysis of the elemental and FTIR data with bump status as the dependent variable suggest that elemental sulfur and molecular structure can be used as an indicator of bump susceptibility within the sample set considered.INTRODUCTIONThe study of coal requires consideration of multiple variables: percentages of organic and inorganic components, organic component origins, coal age, pore structure, cleat density, elemental composition, etc. Examining coal in situ increases the number of variables, such as coal depth, seam thickness, surrounding stratigraphy, and so forth. This collection of variables influences the subsequent behavior of coal simultaneously, and weighing their relative impact is a challenge for researchers. “A problem never exists in isolation; it is surrounded by other problems in space and time” (Ackoff, 1956). Having a substance such as coal that we know so much about, and yet so little, we have to ask what can be learned.An experimental study using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was undertaken to determine if the chemical structure of coal contains information which may lead to a better understanding of triggers or attributes which may, in turn, lead to an increased probability of a dynamic failure event. While a full analysis of the factors driving dynamic failure are beyond the scope of this study, it is possible that a better understanding of the chemical structure of coal will lead to an increased knowledge of its inherent behavior, including its propensity to burst."

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

There has been a recent revival of interest in concentrated coal/water slurries as a substi¬tute for fuel oil or for coal/oil mixtures, particularly in electric power generation. The idea is not a new one. Coal/water slurries were transported by pipeline in the U.S. in the early nineteen-sixties, and the Black Mesa coal pipeline has been in operation for several years, while in Germany, coal/water slurries were being burnt for power generation in the early nineteen-seventies, as described by Merten and Höner (1972). Since coal is not a pure substance but a carbonaceous mixture, the different chemical and physical behavior of coal/water dispersions from different deposits must be understood in order to optimize the properties of the result¬ing slurry fuels. Since minerals which are minor constituents of coal may also strongly affect slurry properties, coal chemistry may vary considerably even within a single deposit. Thus it is unlikely that there will be a single formula for optimizing the slurry properties of all coals, and even the answer for coal from a single source may change with time.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. Before resuming his position as general manager of Calumet and Arizona and New Cornelia, Greenway must recover from the effects of the gas he had suffered in the war. Dr. Ricketts

Surface tension and its control are important in the concentration of ores by froth flotation, both in terms of producing the proper bubble size distribution and to render the ore surface of interest hydrophobic such that adhesion to a bubble will take place. The influence a substance has on surface tension has traditionally been measured using static, equilibrium techniques. Yet many applications such as flotation involve rate-related effects of surface tension where equilibrium values are not reached. In the time frame of 1 - 300 seconds, aging effects have been noted for bubbles formed in dodecylamine acetate solutions; a slow decrease in surface tension occurs until an equilibrium value is reached, as studied by Finch and Smith (1972). Since stationary bubbles do not exist in flotation cells because of the turbulence generated by agitation and aeration, it is more likely that the chemical composition of the bubble is determined during its formation, under dynamic conditions. The chemical composition is extremely important because the induction time required for a particle-bubble entity to collide and adhere to each other is augmented by favorable surface tension (wetting) proper- ties between the surface of the particle and the bubble air-water interface or envelope, as considered by Mackenzie and Matheson (1963). Finch and Lyman (1976) have established that the probability of a "permanent" attachment taking place during this contact time is aided by the ability of an oil droplet (viz. bubble) to relieve non- equilibrium surface tension effects which are involved in the water-thinning process. This Maragoni effect, or surface elasticity, can be considered in the context of particle agglomeration addressed by Kao and coworkers (1975). Water drainage leads to the formation of a collector-frother meniscus appearing between the colliding entities, arising from their combined partial immiscibility in the water phase and promoted by hydrophobic bonding within the interface. Together they constitute a liquid bridge whose force of attraction drawing the particles together is proportional to the interfacial tension existing between the water phase and liquid bridge. This adhesive force shows an approximate linear decrease with separation distance until rupture occurs, that is, FX = Fmax (1 ? X/Xr) (1) for a distance of separation X and rupture distance G. The greater the surface elasticity of the bubble, the greater will be the rupture distance and the better will be the force of adhesion. The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

New global industry standards and regulatory changes regarding mining tailings management are driving installation of tailings filtration plants to decommission existing tailings dams and implement dry stacking. Target of this project was to reduce ultrafine slime tailings deposition. Previous investigation at Samarco concentrator has showed a 35% decrease in tailings filtration throughput when feeding a mix of 95% flotation tailings with 5% slime tailings (compared with 100% flotation tailings), also worsening geotechnical aspects such as material workability during dry staking. Industrial trials using a proper filter aid at tailings filtration plant feeding a mix of 94% flotation tailing and 6% slime tailing (equivalent to 30% of total slime generation) have provided filtration performance maintenance (throughput and cake moisture), and dry stacking the dewatered material. Results achieved will enable life expansion of existing slime disposal structures, as well as potential life of mining extension. Furthermore, reagent chemistry influence is discussed by the light of geotechnical aspects, which has been showing improved KPIs, such as workability, compressibility and permeability.

Every year thousands of people from all over the world come to Mount Parnasse, visiting Delphi, the Parnasse ski-resort and other sights in the area of Fokida, available to all ages all year round. This region of Greece, is not only gifted with natural beauty, but also with valuable underground natural wealth: inside Mount Parnasse and the adjoining Ghiona Mountain, there are rich bauxite deposits - the ore from which aluminium is made. In this magnificent part of our country, any mining activities undertaken must be adapted to coexist within such an ecologically sensitive area. This demands an enormous effort, knowledge and the use of technology. This is definitely our Company's primary objective. Our company's (Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A.) activities in the area began in 1933, when Euripides Mavrommatis and the two Eliopoulos brothers, Elias and George, established "Bauxite Parnasse SA". Since then, ten thousand people have worked in these ore deposits, and 45 million tons of bauxite have been extracted. The full length of the underground excavations is more than 300 kilometers and 115 million cubic meters of limestone have been extracted on surface mining. In 1996, Bauxite Parnasse merged with Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A. Now, the company exports more than 1.500.000 mt per year of bauxite to more than 15 countries around the world, offers a significant amount of job opportunities in the region, and imports valuable exchange into the country.
