The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. A new monitoring device called SAFEBOLT (Stress And Force Evaluator in BOLTs) has been recently developed at McGill University. The device is essentially an alternative to the load cell, it permits the monitoring of bolt axial load in the field. The SAFEBOLT system consists of a portable readout unit, a connecting cable and the SAFEBOLT device, which is installed in the bolt head. The new device can be installed on any industry standard rockbolt or rebar. The device is completely encapsulated in the bolt head, which makes it resistant to corrosion, rugged, and free of any electric wires. Pilot tests at two underground Quebec mines were carried out and helped improve the initial design of the device head.

Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH AachenUniversity developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industryon operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour(Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciencesand Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR).In total 30 indicators were defined and designed to assess the performance of the mineral rawmaterials industry in terms of sustainable development, 10 indicators for each pillar (economical,ecological and social pillar).The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development of environmentalindicators. These had to be adapted or completely new designed in order to match the specificcharacteristics of the mineral raw materials industry."

Outburst of gas, coal and rock can be defined as sudden release of coal and rock accompanied by large quantities of gas into the working face or other mine workings. The outburst events appeared rarely in some metal mines has generally occurred in salt and coal mines especially bituminous coal mining. The most important factors that influence the occurrence of outbursts are gassiness of the coal seam, tectonics, properties of the coal and rock and vertical and lateral stresses occurring in the seam and or rock or part of the coal seam. This paper describes the problem of gas and coal outbursts in underground coal mines. The outburst events occurred in Zonguldak Coal Basin located on the Black Sea coast was investigated since 1969. Geological and gas conditions of Zonguldak Coal Basin are described. The incidents are analyzed statistically with the criteria such as amount of coal and gas outburst, depth of workings, effect of tectonism, thickness and inclination of coal seams.

Whilst mine planners almost universally assume deterministic forward commodity prices when undertaking valuations of mining projects, historical data well demonstrates that those prices are quite volatile. This paper seeks to understand and quantify how this forward price uncertainty will impact mining project valuation. This paper will also present a way of computing an upper bound on the expected Net Present Value (NPV) of a mining project given forward commodity price uncertainty.

The Blair Athol Coal Mine (BAC) is a large open cut operation in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. Current mine capacity is about 11 million tonnes per annum(Mtpa) of export coal. On-line analysis at BAC consists of two Coalscan 9500s installed directly on the output of the crusher plant and immediately before the product stockpiles, while a third Coalscan 9500 is installed on the transfer conveyor feeding the train loading bin. The two product Coalscans have a dual purpose. The first is to provide real time coal quality data directly back to the mining operations. The second is that of modeling the product stockpile with accurate on-line information. This modeling enables both production and coal quality personnel to accurately examine the coal quality of each stockpile with a degree of resolution which previously had never been achieved.

A 9-meter-long drift was constructed in the unsaturated-fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain to evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing a finite volume of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations, and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

Minerales Monclova S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) has applied different methane gas drainage technologies, according to the top industry requirements in order to keep the methane gas at the lowest possible concentration in our operations, both in the development sections and longwall sections. Our staff has used the horizontal rotary technique. In 2004 MIMOSA bought a re-built drill machine and signed a contract with Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI), which included a training program in Horizontal Directional Drilling using the reflex system. The training system was developed for a period of three months in Mine VII, with very good performance by the MIMOSA staff. After the training the equipment was moved to Esmeralda Mine, where we had already drilled holes at the development section, 2,500 ft. It was the longest distance that could be reached with our original equipment, obviously; the directional drilling program is another challenge for us and our staff, but we are very confident that our result will be better every time. We will be evaluating each borehole and expect to improve our results in each progressive borehole, until we can drill up to the capacity of the equipment. We are in the process of buying another drill with an electronic monitoring device (DD DMecca) in the following months.

Most discussions of sustainable development (SD) in mining relate to metal mines in rural areas. Industrial minerals (IM) are closer to urban areas primarily owing to a high transport-cost component of delivered cost. This visibility to large populations overshadows IMs relatively small operation size and generally lower waste volume and toxicity. The IM industry needs to rethink its way of doing business to fit into the SD paradigm. Society and business in general will also undergo significant change to enable industrial SD along the lines of triple-bottom-line accounting with government pushing everyone. The benefit to IM mining from embracing SD is a renewal in their social license to operate and a rebirth of mining as a positively-viewed force in society. This positive view would lead to lower acquisition costs because society would not fight so hard to eliminate nearby mining. This would ease the current exploration woes of the IM industry by opening up new deposits for exploration and more readily allowing placement of mines nearer to markets. The earlier in the exploration process SD is initiated, the better.

A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.

KEECO has developed the Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology for the treatment of acidic, metal-laden waters. Utilizing a silica-based chemical formulation that entails chemisorption and micro-encapsulation of heavy metals in a permanent silica matrix, encapsulated particles settle quickly and are effectively isolated from the surrounding environment, producing a stable sludge that is characteristically non-hazardous. In a number of independently-verified pilot and full-scale applications (including the Bunker Hill Mine, Leviathan Mine, Wheal Jane Mine, and Meldon Quarry), SME has been proven highly effective. The technology has been featured in a number of mining publications and selected for innovative technology awards.

For most industrial minerals, the color is directly associated with economic value. In terms of physics, the principal property that defines the term ?color? is the intensity of light reflected (or transmitted) by an object over the visible band, comprehended between 400 and 700 nm. This reflectance spectrum serves as the starting point for a variety of color-describing factors, the most common in the mineral industry being the brightness (TAPPI, 1977 and 1986) and the L*a*b* system (HunterLab, 2008). Quality specifications for mineral products are usually based on these colorimetric parameters. This market is becoming increasingly more selective and demanding over the quality of raw materials and alongside the traditionally controlled characteristics, such as particle size distribution and chemical composition, a trend exists towards the establishment of increasingly more strict specifications for the optical properties of these materials. This is due to the fact that most plants consuming these industrial minerals incorporate them into products in which the visual appearance is controlled. For these plants, most of them being the manufacturers of plastics, paper, paints, and ceramics, variations in the color of mineral materials result in difficulties to achieve the right color in the final product. Therefore, these plants set strict specifications for colorimetric parameters such as whiteness and yellowness, as well as colorimetric coordinates like L*, a*, and b*. For the manufacturer of industrial minerals, this translates into difficulties simply because many of these parameters are usually alien to the tradition of the mining industry. The main quality parameter in the kaolin industry is brightness, which is a weighted average of reflectance values over the range of 400-510 nm (TAPPI, 1977). Due to the lack of a better property, producers tend to use brightness to also assess the quality of the in situ ore and along the processing operations. However, the unprocessed kaolin is often accompanied by ?contaminant? minerals. For Brazilian kaolins, which are the object of this study, the most important contaminants are hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeOOH), and anatase (TiO2). Each of these contaminant minerals has a distinct color and behaves differently during the processing of the kaolin ore. Hematite and goethite in particular are particularly strong pigmenting agents and at concentrations as low as 100 ppm they can make the difference between a high-quality white pigment product for paper coating and waste material. As each Fe-bearing contaminant has a different color and responds differently to processing operations (for example, magnetic separation, chemical bleaching, selective flocculation, and/or flotation in the case of kaolin), the in situ brightness tends to show a poor correlation with the brightness of the final product. Brightness measurements are sometimes complemented with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of Fe and Ti, but the total oxide content provided by XRF is also poorly correlated with product quality because Fe may be in the form of goethite, hematite, or inside the crystalline structure of kaolinite. Thus, a more robust technique capable of distinguishing each mineral phase is desirable. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has been used to analyze iron oxide/hydroxide content both qualitatively (Torrent and Barrón, 2003; Liu et al., 2011) and quantitatively (Jiet al., 2002 and 2006). These authors correlate slopes and inflection points at characteristic absorption bands with oxide/hydroxide content in natural soils. The approach presented here involves the extensive use of the Kubelka-Munk (K-M) theory, which has been used for color matching (Schabbachet al., 2009 and 2011) and particle size determination (Otsuka, 2004) in a simplified version. Unfortunately, the scattering constant S is very difficult to measure for dry powders, because the equations require a thin layer of material. Attempts have been made (Gonçalves and Petter, 2007, and Gonçalves, 2009) but the experimental errors tend to be high. Thus, this paper aims to develop a tool for the quantification of contaminant minerals in kaolin based on the K-M theory without resorting to measurements over thin layers. This tool is based on a new two-constant approach, which takes into account differences in scattering between materials over the whole measured spectrum. The experimental dataset consists of the reflectance spectra of mixtures between a bleached kaolin and synthetic Fe pigments.

The Devil?s Slide portion of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara is often closed due to the instability of the adjacent slopes. Following many years of public input and careful evaluation of alternatives, Devil?s Slide will be by-passed via two inland tunnels, providing a safe, dependable highway between Pacifica and Montara. For the twin tunnels, each 9m diameter tube will accommodate only one traffic lane. Each tunnel tube will accommodate a 3.6 meter roadway, 0.6 meter and 2.4 meter inside and outside shoulders respectively, and 1.2 meter walkways on each side. Cross passages will connect the bores at about 120 meter intervals and jet fans will provide tunnel ventilation. The twin tunnels are approximately 1,250 meter long and 9 meter wide. Excavation will progress from south to north using tunneling techniques that rely on inherent rock strength for support known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Both tunnels will be excavated at the same time, one tunnel face approximately 40 meters ahead of the other. Staggering the tunnels reduces the likelihood of damage from blasting in alternate tunnels. The work schedule is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week resulting in a 24-month timetable to break through to the north portal.

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. Abstract-Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has inves¬tigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (<_1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars he provided only in mines >_1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines <_1.22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country&apos;s diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia&apos;s economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. The Cigar Lake uranium deposit was discovered in 1981 at the south western end of Waterbury Lake, approximately 660 km north of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan (see Figure 1). It is the largest undeveloped high grade uranium deposit in the world. It contains proven and probable reserves of more than 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7%. The world average grade is less than 1% U3O8. [ ] The ore body is located about 450 m below surface at the interface between sandstone above and basement rock below (see Figure 2). The sandstone is fractured rock and saturated with water. This makes water inflow a real hazard at the mine. In fact there have already been two significant mine inflow events. The first of these occurred in October 2006 and resulted in the flooding of the mine. The second occurred in August, 2008 during mine recovery activities.

Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti&apos;s Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metal-nonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data. Electricity was the 4th leading cause of death reported in mining despite being the 14th leading cause of injuries. Electrical shock, not electrical burns, caused 70 of the 75 electrical fatalities reported. About one-half of mine electrical accidents and fatalities occurred during electrical maintenance. Suggestions for mitigating electrical hazards are proposed.

Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.
