At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.

Contact time during bubble/particle collision is calculated by taking into considera¬tion the effect of bubble and particle motion, buoyant force, bubble size, and particle size and specific gravity density for different cases of collision. From this motion analysis approach for the prediction of contact times and from bubble attachment-time measurements,, fundamental aspects of flotation such as flotability, kinetics, and separation can be explained and are discussed with respect to the effects of bubble/particle motion, bubble size, particle size, and attachment time.

Limestone-based material is effective for reducing arsenic concentrations below the current limit of 10 parts per billion for drinking water, typically resulting in final concentrations of about 4 to 6 ppb. However, in laboratory and field testing, further reductions to the 1 ppb range are difficult to achieve with limestone unless other material such as iron is added. The removal mechanism with untreated limestone appears to be the formation of a low-solubility precipitate of hydrated calcium arsenate, in the form of arsenate-apatite. Likely reactions and thermodynamic data indicate a theoretical removal limit of about 2 to 4 ppb for arsenic using raw limestone. Limestone also can reduce concentrations of cadmium and lead below 1 ppb in water, resulting in >99% removal efficiency. Thermodynamic constraints appear to be favorable for reactions involving the formation of otavite during cadmium removal and the formation of hydrocerussite during lead removal.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant project, with verifiable circuit processing performance improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond the equation alone. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study with plant staff from two milling operations and a grinding media supplier was undertaken. ?Task analysis? of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis called for the development of a number of system components, and ultimately yielded a ?Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/Improvement System.?

Mechanically suitable grinding mills became available to the mining industry in 1908. Since then, mill operators have been searching for the best material and design with which to line the mills. These liner systems had to fulfill several criteria. Most important, they had to last long enough in an operating mill to protect its structure from the abrasive wear of the ore and the grinding media. In addition, they had to be capable of efficiently transferring the energy from the mill to the mill charge in order to facilitate the grinding process. And these liners had to be easy to install and remove. The first liners used were generally made of cast white iron, Hadfield manganese, unalloyed high-carbon steel and composites of steel and concrete or cemented in flint blocks or natural stone. In the early 1920s, pieces of solid rubber truck tires were used as emergency repairs for broken cast metal liners. Thus was rubber first introduced as a mill liner material. The first patent for rubber mill liners was awarded in 1921 to James Denny and Rolla Watson, both of the Coniagas Mine in Cobalt, Ontario, and to Dale Barnum of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, NV. This original design was covered under US Patent No. 1470597. It had a fabric backed rubber that was bonded to the shell of the mill.

The Michigan DOT’s I‑75 Modernization Project, Segment 3, is a 30-year, $1.2 Billion design-build-finance-maintain project in Southeast Michigan. The scope includes building a nearly 4-mile long, 14.5-foot ID stormwater storage tunnel. The tunnel and pump station are being built concurrent with new roads and bridges, requiring multiple levels of design and construction coordination. Underground risks include the poten‑ tial for encountering granular soils, groundwater, and explosive gases. The new tunnel will be mined by a new open-face TBM and lined with a one-pass steel-fiber-reinforced precast concrete segmental lining. Shaft construction began in early 2020 and tunnel mining in July 2020.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE MINING MACHINE INTRODUCTION Until recently, developing tunnels in hard rock has been accomplished either by the drill and blast method or by using large tunnel boring machines. Combining the flexibility of drill and blast with the safety, efficiency and productivity of a TBM has been the objective of mining machinery producers for many years. In 1979 The Robbins Company began developing a new type of tunnel boring machine called the Mobile Miner to meet these objectives. The development and testing of the Mobile Miner is the subject of this paper. CURRENT MINE DEVELOPMENT METHODS Both the drill and blast method and the use of a TBM have notable advantages and disadvantages. The drill and blast method, for example, allows much more flexibility, requires less setup time and has a lower initial cost than a TBM; however it requires the use of high explosives and blasting has a disrupting effect on the rock surrounding the development. A TBM, on the other hand, is safer to operate, more efficient, more productive and produces smooth tunnel walls without disturbing the surrounding rock. In longer straight drifts it will easily out distance the drill and blast method. The TBM, however, is limited to boring a circular cross section tunnel which must then be modified if a flat floor is required. It also has a higher initial cost and an extended setup period.

The desire for dry passageways promotes the NATM as it provides a final support system most suitable for the installation of a waterproofing membrane. Waterproofing during construction is a cost effective way to enhance safety and function as well as increasing the life of an underground structure. The NATM approach utilizes the surrounding mass as an integral element of the "ringlike" support system. At the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Lehigh Tunnel No. 2 various rock classifications were determined to require support measures ranging from 2 to 12 inches of shotcrete along with spiling, wire mesh, deformed bar, lattice girders and rock bolts as needed. Field instrumentation and monitoring programmes are a key factor for the success of the NATM. When the support "shell" stabilizes smoothing shotcrete, waterproofing and a final liner can be placed.

This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. Heavy (exceeding 35 tons) roadheaders have not seen much use in the United States, but are used extensively in Europe to excavate many types of underground openings in civil and mining applications. Early models of roadheaders were light and suitable only for utility excavation such as drift enlargement or chamber excavation, unless the ground was very soft and easily cuttable. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. is now using a 45-ton roadheader to excavate two mine slopes in Kentucky and a 70-ton roadheader to excavate a long decline at a new mine in Utah. Results to date indicate that heavy roadhead machines are an effective alternative to both conventional excavation and full-face boring machines in many cases; and where circumstances are favorable are a superior choice. This paper concentrates on applications in the mine development construction industry, but the conclusions are no less valid for civil construction.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the re-search, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This paper highlights NIOSH?s research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan and if appropriate training is provided.

Case studies abundantly demonstrate that properties with viable mineralization and *proven reserves have been overlooked, forgotten. or ignored and can be rediscovered by inexpensive literature search techniques Areal studies s as WaIlaby Enterprises Mining District Data Base Program appear to be more effective than traditional commodity studies. The success of such studies depends on the inclusion of Mineral Clairant Questionnaire Data, Mineral Ownership Data, Field Examination Data and the continual updating of all information. Such studies are valuable for proposed or existing Wilderness Area Evaluations.

R.K. Leininger, N.R. Hasenmueller, and D.D. Carr The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp. for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in southeastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retort¬ing of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. There are many influences which have a bearing on the economics of industrial minerals production. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly three factors which have economic significance in the production of these mineral commodities. The three items of discussion include 1) the nature and relative value of the industrial minerals group, 2) project planning, and 3) market analyses. General aspects of these factors are familiar to most of us. However, an attempt will be made to give some current details regarding each. Also, in reality, project planning and market studies are usually so closely associated that they will be discussed jointly, rather than separately. This will be done by way of examples which show how these two activities actually evolved for two industrial minerals projects.

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. Decreasing copper content in slag is critical for improving copper recovery, where apparent viscosity is the main factor affecting the separation of matte/copper from the slag. The viscous behavior of copper converter slag was investigated during reduction process in this paper, and its non-Newtonian viscous behavior and shear thickening characteristics were clarified. The effects of silicate structure and solid particles in the melt on the slag apparent viscosity were investigated. As slag cleaning proceeded in an electric furnace, the magnetite gradually transformed into ferrous oxide, increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio. With this ratio increased from 1.2 to 2.0, the slag structure was simplified, and its apparent viscosity decreased from 0.26 to 0.12 Pa·s at 1523 K. The iron phase was excessively reduced to metallic state; the slag contained metallic copper-iron alloy particles, increasing apparent viscosity. The apparent viscosity and phase structure of the slag corresponding to the iron phase reduction process were analyzed in detail; the results obtained in the present study are of great significance to the reasonable control of the converter copper slag cleaning process.

Water-powered jackleg rock drills, introduced recently in South African mines are reported to be more efficient, faster and more comfortable to operate than conventional pneumatic drills. A comparative testing of both drill types was performed in Quebec. Based on its results and time studies done in the mines, water-powered drilling has been reviewed with regards to drilling rates achieved, infrastructure needed, side effects, health and safety considerations. This study shows that the application of water-powered drills may help increase footage drilled and improve working environment, but under specific conditions. The examples of such applications are given in the conclusions.

Southern Copper Corporation (SCC) is one of the world’s largest copper companies and is finishing the modernization of the Ilo copper smelter. A single ISASMELTTM furnace will start smelting 1,200,000 tons per year of concentrate at the end of 2006. Three existing Peirce Smith converters are being upgraded plus a new one for converting the matte to blister copper is being installed. Two new anode furnaces and a twin anode casting wheel have being operating since January 2006. This represents one of the main changes in the process because the final product of the smelter is now anode copper instead of blister copper. A new oxygen plant, acid plant, and others facilities are in the ramp-up stage. This environmental project will ensure that the new smelter will comply with the environmental regulations of Peru by the end of January 2007. This paper summarizes the background to the modernization project, describes the different stages of the project including engineering, procurement and construction, describes the main areas of the new copper smelter and also the pre-operational testing, commissioning and start-up of them. This is a brown field project with a target of reducing as much as possible the production losses of the existing operation. This paper presents the details of the development of the Ilo Smelter Modernization Project and explains the main aspects of the new facilities, the products to be obtained and the associated facilities for their commercialization, including a Marine Trestle for bulk acid exportation.

This paper will present the design and construction of a deep underground station of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) project; the Édouard Montpetit station. The Édouard-Monpetit station is an interchange station that will connect the deeply sitting REM tracks to the existing metro station of the same name located closer to the surface. Édouard-Montpetit station is expected to be the deepest in North America, surpassing the famous Forest Glen Station. The various challenges and solutions put forth for the successful completion of this underground work are presented to serve as a valuable example for future deep excavation performed in urban area, in the close vicinity of highly sensitive structures.
