The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated database was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ?actual? grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ?actuals?/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. two three and compound lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the theory of sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of along chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even lognormal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation. Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident reconstruction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed, namely (i) remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sight-lines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

The bulk of plain carbon steel is produced through conventional Basic Oxygen or Electric Arc Furnace routes where the development of the AC Ladle Furnace has made it possible to also produce alloy steels. Smaller Ladle Furnaces have limitations such as lower efficiency; high electrode consumption and diminutive yields rendering them uneconomical to operate and making the processing of low carbon steel grades difficult due to carbon pick up. The demand for special steels and alloys with strict specifications is increasing while commodity prices remain competitive. The production of special steels and alloys have specific process control requirements and the development of the induction melting furnace (IMF) has made it possible to produce smaller batches economically. Refining and alloying of the melt in the IMF further enhance the efficiency. The INDUREF furnace offers increased productivity and flexibility through increased thermal efficiency and can be utilised for holding molten metal for further processing such as granulating, atomising, nitriding, alloy additions and desulphurisation of Ferro-alloys and steels. The system utilises a specially engineered ladle which is placed in an induction-heating assembly comprised of a stationary water-cooled copper coil and lamination packs. The addition of equipment for vacuum degassing and decarburisation of steels and alloys is also feasible. Benefits are: ? No electrode consumption or carbon pick-up ? "Kell is a hydrometallurgical treatment option for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, and base metals from flotation concentrates to refined products on site. The process is cyanidefree, while eliminating emissions of sulphur dioxide, arsenic trioxide, and other toxic species often emitted by smelters and roasters. Kell has been tested on a range of concentrates, including PGMs (UG2, Merensky, Platreef, Great Dyke, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and others), refractory gold-silver, coppergold, and polymetallic concentrates. High extraction efficiencies (>95%) are achieved for value metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, Co) and secondary metals (Sb, Zn, Pb, and others). Studies comparing Kell with smelter-refining show economic benefits: capex 18–33% of smelting; opex 51–66%; electricity consumption 13–46%; and environmental benefits: greenhouse gas emissions 57–61% of smelting, acidification 5–27%, human toxicity 37–62%, and freshwater ecotoxicity 43–55% of smelting. Synergies for Kell plants alongside smelter-refineries include utilization of recovered acid from sulphur abatement systems and excess capacity in precious metal refineries. Kell is unconstrained by concentrate grade and impurities, allowing the co-location of Kell plants for treatment of non-smeltable concentrates alongside existing smelters.Kell has been demonstrated in a nine-week integrated pilot campaign at 1:1000 scale, supporting a bankable feasibility study for a 110 000 t/a plant treating a UG2-Merensky concentrate at Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), owned by Sedibelo Platinum Ltd, which has along with South African Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), invested in Kell. Zimbabwean Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KellTech for a centralized PGM concentrate processing plant."

The potential application of fluidized beds in several sectors of the ferroalloy industry is promising. They can be used in the direct reduction of iron ores to produce a feed for steelmaking, in the reduction of manganese dioxide to produce a lesser oxide for feeding to smelters, in the preheating of chromite for the production of ferrochrome, and in the calcining and pre-reduction of nickel laterites for the production of ferronickel. This paper discusses the potential of fluidized beds in theses processes and highlights the advantages of the technology over other technologies, such as rotary kilns. Two primary advantages?(1) that fluidized beds can treat fine materials and (2) that fluidized beds can be integrated with smelters in a way that allows for more efficient use of energy?may well see the technology gain prominence as more deposits of lower grade are mined and industries strive to use their resources more efficiently. In discussing the potential of the technology in the ferroalloy industry, this paper focuses on the application of fluidized beds in the smelting of chromite, nickel laterites, and manganese ores. Central to the successful operation of this technology is a knowledge of how particle properties influence the behaviour and design of fluidized beds.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc Eng (Mining)degree The purpose of this report is to assess the risks faced by mines in dolomitic compartments in particular Kloof 8 shaft. The dolomites of the West Rand comprise one of South Africa?s most natural water resources, and overlie the reefs of the richest gold mines in the world. The pumping of water from the dolomitic aquifers to prevent flooding has caused the natural water table to subside, and the resulting cavities within the dolomite rock formations that overlie many gold deposits sometimes collapse, causing sinkholes. These impacts of the mining industry could worsen over time if preventative measures are not taken. This report discusses these impacts in detail, more specifically the risks to which operations in dolomitic compartments are exposed. A risk analysis was carried out to access the risks that the organization could face and it was this analysis that allowed one to examine the best methods to combat the problems. Other factors such as geological features and seismic events were also considered for the evaluation. To aid with the completion of this work various resources were utilized. A literature study was undertaken, information was gathered from various experts who specialize in dolomitic studies, evaluations were conducted and conclusions reached. The results from the project indicated that preventative measures should be implemented and correct procedures put in place to prevent any disasters.

Copper oxide ores deposits in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) contain at variable level cobalt oxide minerals. In contrast to copper oxide minerals which readily dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution, the cobalt oxide bearings are difficult to dissolve, especially if cobalt is present in the third oxidation state (Co2O3). This species become soluble after reduction of Co+3in Co+2. In practice, the use of reducing agent is therefore necessary in order to transform the insoluble minerals into soluble cobalt sulphate species. The following reducing agents are currently used at the Shituru plant: ferrous ions, which are present in leach solutions, pulverised copper or sodium meta bisulphite (MBS). Due to the high consumption of reducing agents (0,8 t MBS/t of solubilized Co; 1,2 t Cu/t-Co), cobalt production is expensive. The use of sulphur dioxide as reducing agent was then investigated in order to reduce operating cost. This reagent also presents the advantage of sulphuric acid production during the leaching process. It has been added in the leaching vessel (tank). From the laboratory and industrial tests, selective leaching of cobalt (78%) has been performed. The cobalt leaching kinetic depend on sulphur dioxide dosage. Dissolution of copper, iron and manganese remained very low. No emanation of SO2 gas was observed during the process.

The data base of failed coal pillars in South Africa was analysed with regard to the time of failure in an effort to develop a method to predict how long after their formation coal pillars will fail. It was found that meaningful results could only be obtained by splitting the data base up into groups that displayed similar behaviour. It was postulated, based on observation and experience, that coal pillars fail by a process of progressive weakening progressing into the pillar from the edges. Minimum pillar dimensions to ensure failure were calculated?these were the dimensions that corresponded to a minimum ?real? factor of safety. From the scaling distance required to reach the minimum safety factor, rates of scaling for the failed pillars were calculated based on the observed real lives of the pillars. It was found that the rates of scaling were unique for different mining areas and that they correlated directly with mining height and inversely with time. Using the derived scaling rates, the predicted pillar lives were back calculated for the pillars in the data base of failed pillars. In two of the three groups, the predicted lives correlated well with the observed lives on a one-to-one comparison. In all cases, the predicted lives were in the same time range as the observed lives. Overall, the frequency of predicted lives closely replicated the observed frequency of observed lives of the pillars in the data base of failed pillars. The method was successful in distinguishing between the data base of failed and a representative sample of intact pillars. While the predictions matched the observed lives of failed pillars, the predictions of expected lives for intact (hitherto unfailed) pillars were orders of magnitude greater. It is now possible to estimate the frequencies of future pillar failures for the purposes of mine closure and undermining of surface structures within broad bands.

The shaft-type ferromanganese smelting furnace (SF) at Mizushima Ferroalloy Co., Ltd. has been in operation since startup in 1985 and is continuing to perform smoothly. Production has been increased from the original design capacity of 270t/d to 350t/d by various operational improvements. As a productivity index of the shaft-type furnace, production of 350t/d is equivalent to productivity of 0.9t/m3/d (daily production/cubic capacity of furnace). Recently, various operational improvements were implemented to achieve productivity of 1.0t/m3/d or higher, including oxygen enrichment operation, increased tapping frequency, maintenance of the throat profile, and operation with small lump coke. The target productivity of 1.0 t/m3/d was achieved in January 2005. This report describes the improvements introduced as part of this high productivity technology.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) computational techniques allow treatment of gases, liquids and solids in the same simulation. ALE methods include the ability to treat shock waves in gases, liquids and solids and the interaction of shock waves with each other and with media from one of the other categories. ALE codes can also treat explosive detonation and the expansion of the explosive gases and their interaction with air and solids. ALEGRA is a 3-D ALE code that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories over the past few years. ALEGRA has been applied to a 2-D simulation of presplitting using decoupled explosives in rock blasting with very interesting results. The detonation of the explosive at the bottom of the hole sends a shock wave up the borehole driven by the explosive gas expanding into air. The explosive gas compresses the air against the stemming column where it rebounds and recompresses at the bottom of the borehole. This type of ringing takes several cycles to damp out. The explosively induced expansion of the borehole is also treated by ALEGRA as well as the shock wave imparted to the rock. The presentation of this paper will include several computer animations to aid in understanding this complex phenomenon.

The mechanical behaviour of schistose sedimentary rocks such as slate show a great amount of anisotropy. Hence, the schistocity plane is essential when investigating the mechanical behaviour of such rocks. The presence of such rocks in civil projects causes non-symmetric deformation and their behaviour is unpredictable. In this research, the anisotropic strength behaviour of slates is studied. Uniaxial and triaxial tests were conducted on specimens having orientation angles (ß) of 0, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees. The triaxial tests were done at confining pressures of 3, 5 and 10 MPa. The effect of anisotropy on uniaxial and triaxial strength, cohesion, angle of internal friction and Hoek and Brown's m and s constants were investigated. The results indicate that the strength of slates in uniaxial and triaxial compression exhibit a U-shaped anisotropic behaviour. In-order to evaluate the most suitable criterion for predicting the anisotropic strength of rocks in uniaxial and triaxial compression, an investigation was carried out on various criteria. In uniaxial compression, the Liao and Huong and Ramamurthy criteria had good agreements with the test results. In triaxial compression the Hoek and Brown and Mc Lamore criteria had better agreements with the test results. It should be noted that in-order to utilize these criteria, a large number of tests must be carried out. However, as the Ramamurthy criterion needs fewer test results, it can be the most suitable for investigating the behaviour of anisotropic rocks in triaxial compression. The kinetics of the dissolution of colloidal silver in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated with the aim of developing a relatively rapid and convenient method for monitoring the ?leaching power? of solutions typically used in the cyanidation process. Experimental results obtained are consistent with an electro-chemical model, in which the mixed potential is set up in the active region of the polarization curve for the anodic dissolution of silver, giving rise to a rate of dissolution which is controlled by the rate of mass transport of either cyanide or oxygen to the surface of the silver. The rate of dissolution of colloidal silver was found to respond to variations in the reactant concentrations in a similar manner to gold (and silver) in a typical free-milling ore. The use of this technique for the monitoring and control of the cyanide leach process is discussed.

The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

A review of thermodynamic information and models of slags, including associated software when available, is presented. The pertinence and accuracy of these models is discussed by comparison of their predictions for various slag thermodynamic properties with the available experimental data. Practical industrial applications will be illustrated by a literature review of the dephosphorization process of ferromanganese alloys and by the description of Ti behavior during silico-manganese alloys production. This latter example will show how the thermodynamic models have been used to propose a flotation treatment at low temperature to enhance TiC removal.

Optimum Colliery is an opencast strip mine producing 18Mt of bituminous coal per annum for the export and inland markets as well as for domestic power generation at the Hendrina PowerStation. Coal is exposed by four 60m3 and four 11m3 walkingdraglines and transported from the open cuts to the processing plants by twelve 130 ton coal haulers. Overburden and interburden areas are drilled by nine 250mm-diameter rotary drill rigs. Until 1997 all surveying tasks were conducted by electronictotal stations requiring accurate control points from which line-of-sight XYZ readings could be taken. In 1997 a GPS system was introduced which consisted of a fixed base station and two rovers. The rovers were able to perform most of the survey tasks assigned to total stations. In addition, two overburden drills were equipped with blasthole drill navigation systems, which includes the drill monitoring and material (strata) recognitions system. The rest of the drilling fleet will also be equipped with GPS systems. Blasthole positions are designed in the office based on survey and geological/geophysical information and transmitted via radio link to an industrial PC on the drills. Together with GPS positional data, both the planned and actual drill positions are displayed on an LCD screen. This eliminates the need for surveyed hole positions to be staked before drilling, and for actual hole positions to be surveyed after drilling. As holes are drilled, performance and rock property data transmitted back to the office. Future applications will include GPS monitoring of dragline positions and pad elevations. GPS receivers on the draglines will utilize the existing base station to calculate and transmit XYZ co-ordinates. Another application will be locating of boreholes in the field prior to the pumping of specified explosive charges into the blastholes. Charging instructions for each blasthole will be loaded into the computer on the explosives truck which will be equipped with a GPS system for hole identification.
