Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. Vibration levels on a variety of equipment in a South African opencast mine were measured in this study. The well-established ISO 2631-1 (1997) standard methodology was used for the computation of weighted root mean square (WRMS) and vibration dose value (VDV). This method was used to evaluate the whole-body vibration (WBV) on a wide range of equipment in the opencast mine using the two main parameters, namely the daily exposure A(8) which is based on the WRMS concept and the VDV which measures shocks. The results obtained show that while the majority of the equipment rendered exposure levels that are below the exposure limit value (ELV), exposure levels on about half of the equipment do exceed the exposure action levels. The study also highlights the importance of shock in the observed responses.

This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. Collection, preparation, and analysis of blasthole chippings is expensive. Frequently, interpolation of grades at unsampled locations is considered using techniques like kriging. A pre-requisite for kriging is that an experimental variogram is established. In order to assess the quality of the experimental variogram, a measure is developed in this paper. The measure is derived from analysis of the time-honoured expression relating the variance, semivariance, and covariance. It reflects the weighted average deviation of the summed semivariance and covariance from the biased variance. The proposed measure allows assessment of the influence of key variables on the quality of the variogram. Using simulated data, it follows that the quality improves with an increasing number of samples, increasing density of the sampled locations, increasing regularity of the sampling pattern, and increasing uniformity of grades in the absence of correlation. Application to real data shows that the minimum number of samples could coincide with a marked decrease in the value of the measure. Establishing a threshold value is subject to further research. Discussion on the load bearing capacity of ground and the stability of tunnel is presented. We derive a simplified solution of a circular lined-tunnel in an elastic ground. The solution results in a better understanding of characteristic curves. Use of DEM allows us to consider effects of possible yield of the overstressed zone around the tunnel and inherent discontinuity of ground on the curves. Diskussion auf der Last Tragfähigkeit Bodens und die Stabilität des Tunnels wird dargestellt. Wir leiten eine vereinfachte Lösung eines kreisförmigen Ausbautunnels in einem elastischen Boden ab. Die Lösung ergibt ein besseres Verständnis der Kennlinien. Um Gebrauch DEM erlaubt uns, zu betrachten Effekte des möglichen Ergebnisses der überbetonten Zone den Tunnel und zugehörige Unstimmigkeit des Bodens auf den Kurven. La discussion sur la portance de charge de la terre et de la stabilité du tunnel est présentée. Nous dérivons une solution simplifiée d'un revêtement-tunnel circulaire dans une terre élastique. La solution a comme conséquence une meilleure compréhension des courbes caractéristiques. L'utilisation de DEM nous permet de considérer des effets du rendement possible de la zone surchargée autour du tunnel et de la discontinuité inhérente de la terre sur les courbes.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (RPZC) identified implementing a Mineral Resource Management (MRM) programme at the mine as a strategic incentive. The purpose of the programme is to optimize the economic value of the RPZC mineral resource, over the total value chain of the mine, taking expected macro economic conditions into consideration as well. With Mineral Resource Management still being a relatively young drive in the mining industry, information on the concept is relatively scarce. RPZC had several successes and problems with implementing such a concept and also still has a way to go before a complete Minerals Resource Management approach is implemented at the mine and entrenched as a working culture. The purpose of this paper is to: ?define a systems approach to implementing a Mineral Resource Management programme at a base metal mine ?indicate the specific MRM approaches taken at RPZC ?indicate the expected advantages of implementing a MRM approach ?measure the actions already taken against the systematic MRM approach, and indicate the advantages already captured ?indicate the way forward taking lessons learned into consideration ?indicate proposals to implement the MRM approach in the macro mining environment in South Africa.

Recent studies by the authors into the behaviour of jointed rock masses using direct shear testing have confirmed that joint spacing has a significant effect on rock mass strength. The rock mass failure envelopes assessed from these tests have been compared to failure envelopes obtained using the Hoek-Brown GSI criterion. Good agreement between measured and estimated GSI strength envelopes where obtained when joint spacing was considered in the assessment of GSI. Les études récentes conduites par les auteurs sur le comportement des joints rocheux employant l'essai direct de cisaillement ont confirmé que l'espacement a un effet significatif sur la force de la masse rocheuse. Les enveloppes de ruptures obtenues pour ces essais ont été comparées à l'enveloppe de rupture obtenue en utilisant le critère GSI Hoek-Brown. Une bonne corrélation a été constatée entre les enveloppes obtenues expérimentalement et les enveloppes calculées par la méthode GSI quand l'espacement des joints a été pris en considération dans l'évaluation de GSI. Kuerzliche Untersuchungen der Autoren betreffs Reaktionen von gebrochenen Felsmassen zu direkter Scherkraft, bestaetigen, dass die Abstaende von Rissen einen deutlichen Einfluss auf den Widerstand der Felsmassen hat. Die Bruchbereiche der Felsmassen die von diesen Untersuchungen entwickelt wurden, wurden verglichen mit den Bruchbereichen, die man mit der Anwendund der Hoek-Brown GSI Formulierung erhaelt. Eine gute Uebereinstimmung zwischen gemessenen und errechneten GSI Festigkeitsbereichen wurde erzielt, wenn der Abstand der Risse in der Berechnung der GSI in Betracht gezogen wurde.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). Bien que prospère, l'application de cette méthode n'a pas été accompagnée de techniques robustes pour le modelage de fractures. En outre, les augmentations à long terme de production n'ont pas été souvent concrétisées. En d'autre termes, les ingénieurs ont pu, via le procès et l’erreur, éviter les majeur problèmes ‘opérationnel’ mais avec aucune optimisation de tels traitements. Ainsi, la plupart des projets de fracturation hydraulique ont été exécuté dans des roches mal consolidées et ont rendu résultat totalement inattendu. Une récente étude mondiale sur les pressions nettes par le Consortium Delft pour Fracturer (Papanastasiou, 1997) a indiqué que les pressions nettes qu’ont été rencontré dans le champ sont environ 50% à 100% plus hautes que les pressions nettes prédites par les simulateurs fracturant conventionnels. La différence est pourtant plus importante pour le cas de formations mal consolidées (Pak, 1997). La théorie de construction d'un simulateur elastoplastic d’hydrofrac à trois dimensions entièrement couplé, en particulier conçu pour les roches non consolidés, est présentée dans ce papier. Ce nouveau modèle calcule les dimensions et les changements dans la forme de(s) fracture(s) étant créé pendant les opérations de fracturation hydraulique. One of the ways of trauma and occupational diseases level reduction is noted to be the improvement of the labour protection measures planning. The trauma and occupational diseases analysis based on the correlative and regressive methods has been carried out for the “Vorgashorskaya” mine of Pechora coal basin. Trauma and occupational diseases occurrences frequency and economic losses value have been estimated. Trauma and occupational diseases economic risk distribution analysis has been presented in respect to the different subdivisions and occupational groups of “Vorgashorskaya” mine.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

Scenario reduction is designed for selecting a representative subset of geostatistical simulations out of a much larger set. Three steps are involved: measuring the dissimilarity between two simulations; finding a metric to measure the distance between any subset of k simulations and the full set of N simulations; and finding an efficient algorithm for selecting the subset that minimizes the metric. This paper focuses on the third question. We show that genetic algorithms are an efficient way of approaching the minimum when the population of subsets to be sampled is large. Two case studies based on the Walker Lake data-set are presented: firstly choosing k=4 simulations out of a total of 100, and secondly choosing 20 out of the same 100 simulations. In the first case it was possible to compute all possible combinations exhaustively and hence to demonstrate that the algorithm converges to the true minimum. This was not possible in the second case. Instead we demonstrate that it outperforms the random draw algorithm used in earlier work. A procedure for tracking individual selections during the iterative procedure was developed. This allows us to measure the evolution in the percentage of progeny resulting from crossing-over and from mutation that survived in the next generation. It gives valuable insight into how to choose the parameter values in the algorithm. Another key finding is that there is a trade-off between the number of individuals per generation and the number of generations required for the algorithm to converge.

Prismatic samples of a medium-grained sandstone from Slask Colliery (Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland) were tested under uniaxial compression, conventional triaxial compression and true triaxial compression conditions. The conventional triaxial compression tests were carried out at confining pressure (p) equal to 12.5, 25.0 and 37.5 MPa. In the true triaxial compression tests the minimum principal stress (s3) was equal to 25.0 MPa and the intermediate principal stress (s2) was 1.5, 2 and 2.5 times higher than s3. Results of the studies show that confining pressure strongly inhibited dilatant behavior of rock samples tested under conventional triaxial compression conditions; the increasing confinement resulted in the growing compaction of the rock material. The effect of dilatancy was also highly suppressed by the intermediate principal stress. While important dilatant, negative volumetric strain corresponded to the peak differential stress at low intermediate principal stress conditions, at high intermediate stresses the rock material was damaged to much lesser extent. As a result, faulting of rock samples in the post-peak region was much more violent and was accompanied by a strong acoustic effect. Les échantillons parallélépipédiques du grès à grains moyens de la mine ‘Slask’ (Bassin Houiller de Haute Silésie, Pologne) ont subi les essais de compression monoaxiale (compression simple), de compression triaxiale conventionnelle (compression triaxale de révolution) et de compression triaxiale vraie. Les essais de la compression triaxiale conventionnelle ont été effectués à la pression de confinement de 12,5, 25,0 et 37,5 MPa. Dans les essais de compression triaxiale vraie la contrainte principale minimale (s3) était de 25,0 MPa et la contrainte principale intermédiaire (s2) était 1,5, 2 et 2,5 fois supérieure de s3. Il résulte des essais que la pression de confinement inhibe fortement le processus de dilatance dans les échantillons testés dans les conditions de compression triaxiale conventionnelle; l’augmentation de la pression provoquait l’augmentation du compactage du matériau rocheux. Le phénomène de dilatance était également limité de façon significative par la contrainte principale intermédiaire. Alors que l’importante déformation volumique négative correspondait à la contrainte différentielle ultime avec les faibles contraintes principales intermédiaires, dans les conditions de fortes contraintes intermédiaires, le matériau rocheux subissait l'endommagement de façon beaucoup moins importante. En résultat, la rupture des échantillons rocheux au stade post-maximum était beaucoup plus violente et accompagnée d’un fort effet acoustique. Prismatische Probekörper des mittelkörnigen Sandsteines aus dem Bergwerk ‘Slask’ (das Oberschlesische Kohlengebiet, Polen) wurden unter der einaxialen Druckbeanspruchung, konventionellen dreiaxialen Druckbeanspruchung und der echten dreiaxialen Druckbeanspruchung geprüft. Konventionelle dreiaxiale Druckversuche wurden bei dem Manteldruck von 12,5 25,0 und 37,5 MPa durchgeführt. Bei den echten dreiaxialen Druckversuchen betrug die kleinste Hauptspannung (s3) 25,0 MPa und mittlere Hauptspannung (s2) war 1,5-, 2- und 2,5-mal höher als s3. Aus den durchgeführten Versuchen ergibt sich, dass der Manteldruck die Dilatanzentwicklung bei den Probekörpern unter der konventionellen dreiaxialen Druckbeanspruchung stark bremst; die Erhöhung des Druckes rief die ansteigende Kompaktion des Gesteinsmaterials hervor. Die Dilatanz wurde auch durch die mittlere Hauptspannung beschränkt. Während die wesentlichen volumetrischen, dilatanten Verformungen der Grenzdifferenzspannung bei den niedrigen mittleren Hauptspannungen entsprachen, bei den hohen mittleren Hauptspannungen wurde das Gesteinsmaterial viel weniger beschädigt. Im Ergebnis war der Scherbruch der Gesteinsproben im Post-Peak-Bereich viel heftiger und mit kräftigen akustischen Effekten verbunden.

Over the life of the mine, ore pass integrity deteriorates, which may eventually result in the ore pass no longer being fit for purpose. This paper presents several case studies of successful ore pass rehabilitation exercises.

We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). The slag produced in the Peirce Smith converters at the Ilo smelter of Southern Peru Copper Corporation has shown a wide range of magnetite content, which introduces an additional problem in the smelting units due to materials? recirculation. However, the operation data analysis and the application of thermodynamic concepts have made it possible to produce slag with magnetite content between 18 and 20%. The results have suggested that matte grade enhances magnetite formation while silica controls its precipitation, and they are also influenced by the increasing temperature of the slag. Thus, in order to obtain the required magnetite content in the slag, matte grade is gradually enriched in equilibrium with slag containing from 25 to 32% silica.

In the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) small and medium sized companies are beginning to extract the related gas via old shafts or boreholes and to use it as a source for the production of electricity and heat. More than 100 applications for the separate mining right on mine gas had already been filed by beginning of 2002, since mine gas is treated as a mineral resource under the Federal Mining Law. Meanwhile more than 40 mine gas concessions have been granted and first projects are being developed with encouraging results so far. To enhance the applied techniques and their efficiency Aachen University has formed a research team in this discipline. Scope and goals of this research activities are being presented in this paper. Often plant performance suffers as a result of poor control. Poor control leads to low mill throughputs, poor classification and less than satisfactory concentrate grades and overall recoveries. By using the appropriate control tools, substantial gains in plant performance can be made. Mintek?s MillStar and FloatStar controllers have been implemented at various sites across the world. The MillStar controller incorporates leading technology that controls process units from the mill feed through to the flotation feed. Typical results show that milling circuit throughput is increased by 6-10 % and the final product grind size is tightly controlled, thereby enhancing flotation performance. The FloatStar controller is aimed at stabilising and optimising flotation circuits. Through improved level control alone, recovery improvements of up to 1 % have been achieved. Furthermore, by using on-line grade analysers, the controller stabilises final concentrate grades, whilst maximising flotation recovery.

A number of impending and actual pit wall failures have been observed and documented, which have been interpreted to initiate on newly generated structural features. This infers failure through intact rock. Failure mechanisms have been postulated resulting from circumferential stress, extensional strain and brittle flexure. These will be discussed in the context of the failures and the associated monitoring. The implications of failure initiating on ?unknown? features has a significant impact for deep open pit mines where designs are based on the expected structural regime. Being able to anticipate such failures is important for design. Equally important is management of such changes as they arise. In this context, monitoring using high resolution microseismic techniques will be discussed as a means of providing early warning of such failures.

An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. Iron ore fines are agglomerated to produce sinter, which is an important feed material for blast furnaces worldwide. A model of the iron ore sintering process has been developed with the objective of being representative of the sinter pot test, the standard laboratory process in which the behaviour of specific sinter feed mixtures is evaluated. The model aims to predict sinter quality, including chemical quality and physical strength, as well as key sinter process performance parameters such as production rate and fuel consumption rate. The model uses the finite difference method (FDM) to solve heat and mass distributions within the sinter pot over the height and time dimensions. This model can further be used for establishing empirical relationships between modelled parameters and measured sinter properties. Inputs into the model include the feed material physical properties, chemical compositions, and boundary conditions. Submodels describe relationships between applied pressure differential and gas flow rate through the bed of granulated fine ore particles, combustion of carbonaceous material, calcination of fluxes, evaporation and condensation of water, and melting and solidification. The model was applied to typical sinter test conditions to illustrate the results predicted, and to test sensitivities to parameters such as feed void fraction, feed coke percentage, and the fraction of combustion heat transferred to the gas phase. A model validation and improvement study should follow, ensuring sinter test results are free from experimental errors by conducting repeated tests.
