It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

The objectives of this study were firstly to characterize and quantify the inorganic material in the Secunda gasification feedstock. Secondly, the effect of washing on coal properties and sulphur content was investigated. Coal from a single source and a coal blend from 6 different mines were tested. Composite samples were visually sorted by a geologist in the groups containing roof, floor, C-shale, pyrite, carbonates and siltstone material. Inorganic mineral types from the single source and coal blends were characterized separately. Characterization results indicate that the average mineral matter distribution (mass %) of the coal tested was as follows: carbonates (6%), carbon-shale (19%), pyrite (12%), roof (18%), floor (46%) and siltstone (22%). The roof, floor, pyrite, carbon-shale, carbonates and siltstone in the single source and coal blend have similar chemical properties and characteristics, except for the ash melting temperatures of pyrite and kaolinite in the siltstone. By implementing selective mining and increasing mining management practices, the percentage discard in the run of mine coal can be significantly reduced, by up to 45%, if the mining of roof and floor material can be avoided. No significant impact of mining practices on sulphur content is expected in this case due to the low concentrations of sulphur in the roof and floor material. In summary, selective mining practices will probably result in almost45% decrease in the discard content in the run of mine to gasification, an increase in the carbon content from 55.0% to 58% (air dry basis) and a decrease in sulphur content from 1.1% to 0.9% (air dry basis). It is clear from this study that the main source of sulphur is not in the high ash-content mineral types (e.g. floor and roof), but in situ in the coal structure. For example: ?I?d forgotten that the Chinese invented black powder at least 1 000 years ago, back in the 10th century (although some say this invention occurred 2 000years ago). ?I didn?t know that Roger Bacon was the first person in the Western World to give exact directions for the making of gunpowder in 1242 and to understand its potential. Pepper?s Playbook of Metals quotes:?...above all, he is named as the discoverer of gun-powder, a material which has brought more wonderful changes in the great family of man than the most potent elixir that could have been devised to prolong life?.

There have been several high-profile accidents in the South African mining industry where fatigue was identified as either causal or contributory. The risk of fatigue is inherent in any work-time arrangement involving shift work and work that is physically or mentally demanding, repetitive, or requires high vigilance. The management of fatigue is not simply a matter of correct shift scheduling. Amore comprehensive approach is needed. In order to be successful, a fatigue management programme should address the unique needs of the operation in which it will be implemented and should be integrated into normal operations. Fatigue management is a shared responsibility between the organization and its employees, and all stakeholders should participate in order to provide the safest and healthiest working environment possible.

This paper investigates a potential method for arsenic removal from copper concentrates using hypochlorite leaching. The problems concerning pyrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates with high arsenic contents are discussed. A possible solution to the problem by leaching of natural enargite crystals with sodium hypochlorite under alkaline oxidizing conditions, with enargite converted into crystalline CuO and the soluble arsenic forming AsO43-, was experimentally investigated and results are presented. Kinetic parameters were calculated for enargite leaching, using a model-free approach. Advanced isoconversional methods were used to investigate the dependence of activation energy (Ea) on reaction rate (a). Modern constructions of electric ferroalloy furnaces are still based on applying in the lower "liquid" areas the standard carbon materials. What can be illustrated by the experience from several years, in the part of tap hole, hearth walls and bottom, is that so-called carbon or semigraphite microporous materials are successfully being applied. These materials, compared to the standard carbon, give better resistance to the attack by liquid metal and other wear factors. Generally this group includes materials characterised by considerable share of pores of diameters below1µm (significantly exceeding 90% of total porosity). The microporosity increases the resistance to the infiltration of the liquid metal. The effect of microporosity can be obtained by introducing silicon (or its compound) additive to materials based on electrically (or gas) calcined anthracites, electrographite and binder. Moreover, by introducing other ceramic additives, the microporous materials are more resistant to dissolution by the liquid metal. Observing the trends of "improving the materials" in the last years, it is clearly seen that the share of non-carbon additives is bigger and bigger, so we can reasonably speak of rather carbon-ceramic materials. In this paper, the survey of the most important quality criteria, which must be met by the carbon furnace linings, as well as the new testing methods will be presented.

This paper addresses the methodology of introducing risk into the development of mine plans for open pit mines. Recommendations are put forward for achieving a risk balance between mineral resource estimates and slope design. A design process identifying criteria for different stages of planning is presented. Business risk is separated from geological/geotechnical risk and procedures to address these within the development of mine plans are suggested. It is concluded that a formal design process improves communication between key decision makers and adds value to shareholders, investment.

The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

Steel is a highly versatile material due to its low cost and good mechanical properties, but typically needs some or other form of corrosion protection due to its tendency to corrode when exposed to atmospheric conditions. In the case of organic coatings, the corrosion protection and functionality of the final product is critically dependent on the adhesion of the coating to the surface of the steel. In this work the effect of contaminants and the nature of the surface layers present on industrial steel products are investigated by means of paint adhesion tests, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the presence of sodium species on the surface is very detrimental to paint adhesion under wet conditions, while satisfactory adhesion may be obtained even in the presence of silicon and carbon residues. It was also found that the nature of the Fe-O layer, formed under wet conditions is labile and different from that formed in dry air, and that subtle changes in process conditions, such as changing the oxygen content of the quench water, may change the adhesion of paint to the surface of the steel. Lewis acid-base interactions are discussed as a mechanism that may determine the bonding between the steel and polymer coating.

Based on results from triaxial compressive tests, an experimental damage model to simulate post-peak behaviours as well as nonlinear behaviours before peak strength was developed. In order to consider pre-peak behaviours, variations of elastic constants at each damage level were regressed by functions of confining pressure. In addition, post-peak behaviours were simulated successfully by using Hoek-Brown constants. As results, the experimental model could predict nonlinear behaviours, peak strengths and stiffness changes observed in experiments. Basé sur des résultats des essais compressifs à trois axes, un modèle expérimental de dommages pour simuler des comportements de poteau-crête aussi bien que des comportements non-linéaires avant la force maximale a été développé. Afin de considérer des comportements de pré-crête, des variations des constantes élastiques à chaque niveau de dommages ont été régressées par des fonctions de pression d'emprisonnement. En outre, des comportements de poteau-crête ont été simulés avec succès en employant des constantes de Hoek-Brunes. Comme résultat, le modèle expérimental a pu prévoir des comportements non-linéaires, des forces maximales et des changements de riidité observés dans les expériences. Auf Basis der Ergebnisse des dreiaxialen Drucktests wurde das experimentelle Schadensmodell, das sowohl das nicht-lineare Verhalten vor der maximalen Stärke als auch das Verhalten nach der maximalen Stärke simulieren kann, entwickelt. Um das Verhalten vor der maximalen Stärke zu berücksichtigen, wurden die Veränderungen der elastischen Konstante bei dem jeweiligen Schadensniveau durch die Funktionen des begrenzten Drucks zurückgegangen. Außerdem wurde das Verhalten nach der maximalen Stärke unter Benutzung von Hoek-Brown Konstanten erfolgreich simuliert. Schließlich konnte das experimentelle Modell das nicht-lineare Verhalten, die maximale Stärke und die Veränderungen bezüglich der Steifigkeit während der Experimente voraussehen.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the stability evaluation and bifurcation criteria are presented for the Jinping arch dam structure. The bifurcation models in failure status of the arch dam are derived from the uniqueness of the controlling equation of dam behaviours, and the relative phenomena between positive definition of dam structural tangent stiffness and bifurcation are given in the paper. Then the structural collapse criteria for arch dam are discussed based on the energy mode. A stability criterion of dam based on the connection of yield zones is proposed according to the implementation of elasto-plastic FEM (finite element method) numerical analysis. In accordance with this judging method, nonlinear FEM analysis is used for Jinping arch dam. The failure process of the Jinping dam was simulated and yield zones were found under the overloading condition. In der Vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine dreidimensionale finite element analyse fuer die seitlichen. Gestein sauflager mittels dem Bruchmodell Vorgestellt, da fuer Jiniping Bogenstaumauer angewandet wird. Ein Bruch mechanismus model einschliesslich der statistischen parameter der Gesteinfes tigkeit wird entauckeit. In surface mining operations, truck haulage is the largest item in the operating costs, constituting 50 to 60% of the total. In order to reduce this cost, it is necessary to allocate and dispatch the trucks efficiently. This paper describes shovel and truck operation models and optimization approaches for the allocation and dispatching of trucks under various operating conditions. Closed queuing network theory is employed for the allocation of trucks and linear programming for the purpose of truck dispatching to shovels. A case study was applied for the Orhaneli Open Pit Coal Mine in Turkey. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures (mine throughput, mean number of trucks, mean waiting time, etc.) for planning purposes when the truck fleet is composed of identical trucks. A computational study is presented to show how choosing the optimum number of trucks and optimum dispatching policy affect the cost of moving material in a truck-shovel system. In any manufacturing organization internal logistics plays a vital role in improving and maintaining the productivity. In Ferro Alloys manufacturing organization where there is huge input of raw material in terms of ore, reductants and variety of fluxes amounting to about four times of the mass of alloy produced need to be handled from yard to furnaces , internal logistics requires utmost attention. Any deviation or mismatch between stock and requirement will affect furnace operation. Though the activities are being outsourced by most of the organization, these require close monitoring. This communication presents an optimization model which can work as a ready reference for the manager to decide upon the material quantity and the furnace to be fed with an objective of minimizing the cost of handling and zero production loss.

Traditionally, dithiocarbonates (xanthates) have been the preferred collectors for the flotation of platinum-bearing sulphides. However, collector development has led to trithiocarbonates (TTC), which have proven to be very effective bulk sulphide collectors. The interest in TTC flotation behaviour is currently focused on the interaction of these collectors with other collectors, specifically the dithicarbonates. Batch-flotation research has shown synergism to exist among dithiocarbonate, dithiophosphate and trithiocarbonate collectors. Increased sulphide recoveries, both for the first-minute and final concentrate, were realized using mixtures of these collectors relative to the standard.

Seven full and partial pillar extraction operations were visited in New South Wales, Australia, in the early parts of 2001. Certain factors unique to these operations have led to the general success of the safe and economic extraction of these coal pillars. Some of these factors attributable to the overall success of these operations are discussed in this paper. In particular, geotechnical mapping, specific legislation pertaining to pillar extraction, mining methods, the role of temporary supports and training are described. It is found that some of these factors have useful attributes which could be used to design a methodology for extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa.

The free ligand (FL) model is an intuitive model to calculate the equilibrium concentrations in solvent extraction (SX) based on the distribution coefficient (Kd) at infinite dilution and the fraction of free ligand available for extraction. In this work, the FL model is validated to account for co-extraction of Ni and for designing the extraction and scrubbing sections of Co/Ni separation in a base metal refinery. Cyanex 272 is employed as a selective Co extractant in the process to yield high purity Ni. To enhance the loading capacity of the extractant, 50 mol% of NaOH is pre-loaded into it. Experimental and FL modelling results show that four equilibrium stages are required to purify the 99% Ni feed to a 99.97% Ni raffinate. The 53.59% co-extract with 26.76% free ligand is purified with a reflux scrub of 30 g Co/L in one equilibrium stage to 99.01%, Co in the scrubbed extract. The FL model as well as the Co/Ni/Na-analysis of the aqueous phase confirm that in the scrubbing section, Ni in the extract is mainly replaced by Co. Finally, in the one stage stripper the Co concentration in the scrubbed extract is increased from 5.6 g Co/L in the extract to 30.5 g Co/L that is partially used as reflux scrub liquor.

Thermophysical properties of silicate melts are strongly structure dependent. It is well known that the viscosities of slags increase with increasing the degree of polymerization of silicate anions. Even the thermodynamic properties of slags are dependent on the types of species and the population of the same in the melt. Thus, a link between the thermophysical and thermochemical properties of silicate melts is logically expected. The present paper elucidates the salient features of Darken?s excess stability approach to the Gibbs energies of solutions as applied to the viscosities of silicate melts. It is demonstrated, that the second derivatives of the viscosities of binary silicate melts with respect to composition indicate a maxima corresponding to the existence of stable compounds in these systems. The concept was successfully applied to the following systems: Al2O3-SiO2, CaO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, MgO-SiO2and MnO-SiO2. In all the cases, the second derivative plots of viscosities with respect to composition showed peaks corresponding to the metasilicates. The second derivatives of the activation energies of viscous flow with respect to temperature has earlier been shown to reflect the formation of associates/embryos in the homogeneous silicate melts, indicating the readiness of the melt to separate a solid phase. Thermodynamic coupling of thermal diffusivities in the case of the system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2from the laser-flash measurements of these slags as a function of temperature are examined as part of the present study. Densities are estimated from integral molar enthalpies in the case of silicate systems and the results are presented. A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.

The viscosity of TiO2-containing blast furnace slags may increase rapidly (commonly referred to as thickening) under strong reducing conditions in the blast furnace. To elucidate the mechanisms for slag thickening, measurements have been made of changes in the composition and rheological properties of TiO2-CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO slags during the reduction process. The slag composition covered the range of 17–33 wt% TiO2, 9–19% Al2O3, 8–16% MgO and theCaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 1.4. The viscosities were measured using the rotating cylinder method at temperatures up to 1550ºC and the fusibility temperatures were determined from ‘breaks’ in the viscosity-temperature curves. The reduction of the slag was carried out in graphite crucibles at1500ºC for 2–6 hours The rheological properties of the slags during reduction were predominantly influenced by the slag basicity (CaO/SiO2), and the effect of other components depended largely on basic or acidic behaviour of the oxide. The reduction of TiO2in the slag by carbon was initially fast to formTi2O3, followed by further reduction to TiO and TiC. Correspondingly, the viscosity showed initially a slight decrease, followed by a gradual and then rapid increase. The thickening was found to be accelerated by an increase in TiO2content and a decrease in the CaO/SiO2in the slag. In addition to the existence of 1~3 wt% TiC, the thickened slags also had a significant amount of TiO (3~7 wt%), suggesting that TiO may play an important role in the ‘thickening phenomena’ ,possibly by forming solid solutions with TiC to significantly increase the number of solid particles in the heterogeneous slag.
