"The PGM smelting industry is known for operating at significant high superheats. Both the slag and matte phases that separate via gravity need to be tapped out of the furnace in a safe and efficient manner, which can be achieved only through sound tap-hole management practices. This paper gives an overview of the tap-hole management approach followed in the operations at Lonmin’s Western Platinum Smelter.Five circular AC furnaces are operated, with each furnace comprising essentially a crucible and auxiliary equipment. Within the crucible, slag and matte tap-holes are situated at different elevations. The slag phase is tapped at a higher elevation than the matte phase. At the three older furnaces, tapping is done by the conventional method of lancing open the tap-hole and closing it with a dolly. However, at the two newer furnaces, tap-holes are opened and closed with the aid of a drill and mudgun.Tap-hole management can be divided in a number of aspects. In order to achieve a safe opening and closure every time, Lonmin distinguishes between three important aspects - the design of the tap-hole system, the operating practices followed, as well as care and maintenance. This paper briefly describes the tapping channel and cooling requirements for handling superheated matte, together with the difference in design of the matte and slag tap-holes. Mention is also made of the importance of auxiliary equipment, which includes the launders, fume extraction, granulation water, and mudgun and drill units. Improvements made to the matte tapblock design are discussed.The monitoring, alarm, and safety systems related to matte and slag tapping are described. Tap-hole life and different wear mechanisms are mentioned. Tapping can be done safely only if the tap-holes and equipment are maintained properly. Mention is made of the tap-hole refractory repair practices, and the improvements made in order to reduce repair time as well as to extend the time between deep repairs. The importance of the correct tap-hole clay selection in order to nurse the tapping channel after each tap is also discussed.The paper finally touches on some research and development work that was done in order to improve the monitoring of the condition of the tapblock by means of fibre optic temperature sensors"

Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%. "In this paper a discussion is presented of a program designed to produce a 40-day production forecast for an underground stoping system.The program is intended to be a tool for the operations department in an underground mine, and is designed to utilize data readily available from production reports. Brevity of data input, ability to revise slope conditions easily and the accuracy of starting stope status are stressed. Applicability of the program to a wide variety of sloping methods makes the program potentially useful in a large number of mines.The general functions of the program subroutines, and input and output lists are discussed. An example is also given of a stope in operation for a three-day period, which shows how the program can handle production irregularities as they arise."

An analysis of the state-observability characteristics of a dynamic tank-to-tank model of a flotation bank indicates that the concentrate-flow rate of each tank can be estimated from accurate measurements of the pulp height in each tank and the final tailings flow-rate exiting the final tank. Therefore, there is an opportunity to construct an observer (model-based soft-sensor) which can estimate the concentrate flow-rate of tanks in a flotation bank. The concentrate flow-rate, i.e. mass pull, is generally measured by means of froth image analysers on industrial plants. A model-based soft-sensor will not only provide a means to validate froth image analyser results, but could potentially substitute them as they are less expensive to implement and maintain. A study on slag dispersion in a model of bottom-blown bath smelting converter was undertaken at room temperature. The aim was to investigate the behaviour of the dispersed slag phase at various operating conditions with very high gas flow rates in low slag volume (10%) systems. For simulation purposes water, paraffin-oil, and air were used to represent the bulk steel, molten slag, and gases respectively in a one-fifth cold model of the commercial 100 t Creusot-Loire-Uddeholm (CLU) converter used in the manufacture of stainless steel in South Africa. Dimensional analysis was done to correlate mathematically the dispersed phase holdup with the operating conditions and the modified Froude number. The overall expression of the holdup revealed that the dispersed slag phase decreased with the vertical distance from the original interface between the liquid phases. The dispersed phase also decreased with the radial distance in the water plume zone toward the sidewall. The holdup was apparently much higher on the side of the reactor where there were no tuyeres. The modified Froude number ensured the correlation between the model and the prototype.

"SynopsisFluorine – in the form of hydrofluoric acid, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, elemental gaseous fluorine, fluoropolymers, volatile inorganic fluorides, and more – has played, and still plays, a major role in the nuclear industry. In order to enrich uranium, the metal has to be in the gaseous state. While more exotic methods are known, the standard and most cost-competitive way of achieving this is by means of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). This compound sublimates at low temperatures, and the vapour is enriched using centrifugal processes. The industrial preparation of uranium hexafluoride requires both elemental fluorine gas and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF). HF is prepared by the reaction of sulphuric acid with fluorspar (CaF2). Fluorine gas in turn is prepared by the electrolysis of HF. Yellowcake is first converted to uranium tetrafluoride (UF4), using HF, after which the compound is treated with fluorine to yield UF6. After enrichment, the UF6 is reduced to UO2 for use in fuel elements in pellet form.South Africa has the largest reserves of fluorspar internationally, and is the third largest producer after Mexico and China. Fluorine technology has many associated difficulties, because of the reactivity of fluorine and the toxicity of HF. The main barriers to entry into the fluorochemical industry are thus the abilities to produce both HF and F2. Both these substances are produced locally, at the industrial scale, at Pelchem SOC Ltd. Should South Africa contemplate developing its own nuclear fuel cycle as part of the awaited new-build nuclear project, it will be imperative to leverage the existing skills with respect to fluorine technology, resident at both Pelchem and Necsa, for this purpose. This paper summarizes the fluorochemical skills developed locally over the past several decades, and suggests strategies for maintaining the technology base and developing it for the next generation of scientists and engineers.IntroductionFluorine chemistry has always had a very close relationship with the nuclear industry. Although the first mention of fluorspar was recorded in the sixteenth century, and the fundamentals had been well-developed by the Second World War, it was only during the Manhattan Project (Banks et al., 1994), when almost unlimited funds were made available for the large-scale industrialization of fluorine and related compounds, that the technology took off. Expertise in both the chemistry and the engineering aspects of fluorine is essential for the design and running of several of the unit processes in the nuclear fuel cycle."

Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. Submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are used extensively in the production of ferrochrome, where charge material – consisting of mixtures of carbonaceous reductants, fluxes such as silica, and ore in the form of pellets – is fed through chutes into the vessel. The feed typically forms a thick bed or ‘burden’ of solid particulates above a bath of molten material below. This burden layer surrounds three electrodes, which are typically arranged in a triangular configuration in circular SAFs. A major challenge in the industry is the availability of sought-after reductants, volatile market conditions, and increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa. A good understanding of the physical properties of the raw materials in the charge is therefore of great value in order to best deal with the reductants available at any given time, and thereby maximising furnace throughput. This paper presents a study of the effects of different particle properties on particle flow behaviour relevant to SAF operations. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of the particulate flow of beds of charge material to properties such as the coefficients of friction, particle shape and size, and others. The present study lays the groundwork for the development of full DEM models of the SAF that will greatly improve understanding of the flow of complex mixtures of solid particles in the submerged arc furnace, and how the relative physical properties of each component in the charge can influence electrical behaviour of the burden.

"South Africa’s Northern Cape Province hosts semi-precious and gemstone occurrences that are sporadically mined on a small scale by local communities. Tiger’s eye, a gemstone known for its chatoyancy properties, is found in important deposits located near the town of Prieska, where is it intermittently mined. Challenges faced by small-scale and informal mining include mining without proper permits, risky mining practice in dangerous terrain, and illegal export of raw material without concerted effort at domestic beneficiation. As part of a study aimed at job creation and social upliftment in the region, tiger’s eye deposits in the Prieska area were assessed to assist small-scale miners to understand tiger’s eye grades and their distribution. This will allow not only more efficient and safer mining of these deposits, but also beneficiation of the raw product into tumbled stones, cabochons, jewellery, and other small artefacts for sale. A hub established in Prieska by Mintek trains locals in the beneficiation of tiger’s eye. Supply to the hub must make use of a consistent grading system, which is discussed in this paper. Together with proper mine licensing, such an approach will develop mining and beneficiation skills, and create and sustain employment for the local community. IntroductionTiger’s eye is a semi-precious stone known for its chatoyancy property, which is caused by parallel, silicified asbestos fibres that impart a silky lustre to specimens. Deposits of tiger’s eye in the surrounds of the town of Prieska, Northern Cape Province, formed the focus of a study aimed at small-scale mining and beneficiation of this commodity. The Prieska tiger’s eye deposits are located along the N10 route to Upington (Figure 1). Tiger’s eye is unevenly distributed and occurs as lenses of various sizes, interbedded in gently folded metasedimentary rocks of mostly banded iron formation (BIF). The tiger’s eye occurrence in the Northern Cape Province, especially in the Prieska area, has not been extensively researched. There is thus limited information available in the public domain. The lack of knowledge on tiger’s eye distribution has resulted in local small-scale miners adopting a trial-and-error method of mining. Basic geological mapping and field evaluation of the deposit, coupled with professional judgement, are important aspects of any small-scale mining operation and can contribute significantly to the formulation of various acceptable and equally viable mining methods and practices."

"Mud rushes are sudden inflows of fine wet ore within underground mines; they can harm people and equipment as well as cause production delays. Block and panel caving mines are prone to mud rushes in their production levels, with mud flowing from the drawpoints. Different mines have developed methods to control drawpoint conditions and thus perform safe ore extraction. The aim of this study is to develop a decision matrix and apply it to samples from drawpoints for the Diablo Regimiento mine, Codelco, El Teniente Division (Chile). The Abrams’s Cone was used to perform slump tests on mud samples and characterize their consistency by setting the saturation degree and packing. The unconfined strength for different saturation degrees and packing was then evaluated. The results show that conditions for fluid response in slump tests correspond to conditions for low strength in unconfined compression tests. We also found the water content value at which the flowing consistency changes from plastic to soft behaviour according to the slump test classification for each sample. This value varied between 12.2% and 16.9%, depending on the sample tested. Finally, a fluid security factor was defined in order to design an extraction pattern for the samples tested, based on the water content. We conclude that a very densely packed ore is not prone to flowing. The flow properties depend strongly on the specific properties of the ore tested, and consequently a specific criterion should be developed for different types of ore at a particular mine. The criterion developed for Diablo Regimiento ore provides critical water content values from 11% to 15%, depending on the ore type. IntroductionBlock/panel caving has the lowest cost and the highest production rates of all underground methods (Heslop, 2000; Hubert et al., 2000). Good management of the risks is important to ensure the security of personnel and infrastructure. Operational risks for the method include rockbursts, air blasts, and mud rushes (Hubert et al. 2000). A mud rush is defined as a sudden inflow of mud from a drawpoint or other underground opening into the mine (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005). Mud rushes can cause dilution, production delays, and damage to equipment as well as injuries and fatalities. The elements necessary for mud rushes are mud-forming material, disturbances, a discharge point, and water (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000). All these elements are present in block/panel caving mines. Mud-forming material comes from ore milled by the caving process; water comes from underground and surface sources. Drawpoints in the production level are discharge points for the mud. Finally, several types of disturbance could trigger the mud rush phenomena: blasting, earthquakes, operation of equipment (Call & Nicholas, Freeport McMoRan, and Hydrologic Consultants, 1998; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012), arch collapse above drawbells (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012) and ore drawing (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005; Call & Nicholas, Freeport McMoRan, and Hydrologic Consultants, 1998; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012)."

"Brick manufacturers supply a variety of uniquely coloured facebricks to the building industry, which requires a high level of colour consistency in the products. Colour variation in bricks is influenced by the composition and consistency of the white clay raw material. By blending varieties of naturally occurring white clay the manufacturers produce a unique range of facebrick products. Homogeneity of the white clay raw materials mined at Lenasia is crucial for producing bricks of consistent colour. Geostatistical investigations of the major element distributions (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and K2O) and loss on ignition (LoI) were conducted. An analysis of the spatial continuity of these variables followed by ordinary kriging indicated that the upper white clay layer at Lenasia is richer in K2O and Fe2O3 than the lower layer. Consistency in the colour of facebricks depends critically on careful management of the variability in the K2O and Fe2O3 content of the clays. The geostatistical approach to understanding the distribution of elements in the clay allows miners to construct clay stockpiles of consistent quality for feeding the brick-making process. Geostatistical investigation of the chemical contents in other clay domains within the deposit is recommended, and could be extended to all facebrick manufacturers to assist in improving the colour consistency of their products. IntroductionMost clay in South Africa is used in the manufacturing of tiles, pipes, bricks, whiteware, refractories, and pottery. Bricks are manufactured from a wide variety of clay types, the behaviour of which during firing depends critically on the the clay mineralogy and chemical composition, but this relationship not well understood (Stein, 1982). The variety among clay deposits is related to the different processes of formation (Deer, Howie, and Zussman, 1992). The geochemical composition of the clay can vary between layers and within the same layer in an individual deposit (Lurie, 1984). The properties of clay minerals are determined by their structures and the different combinations of silicate layers, cations, and hydroxyl ions (Kingery, Bowen, and Uhlmann, 1976). South African clays can be classified as either kaolinite or montmorillonite and are seldom found in a pure form (Lurie, 1984). Different clay minerals affect the drying, forming, firing behaviour, colour, and quality of the brick product in different ways. Laboratory tests (full physical analysis) can indicate the suitability of a clay for the manufacture of ceramic products. The minerals most essential for the manufacturing of clay brick products are kaolinite, illite, and quartz (Stein, 1982)."

Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) is an effective data-adaptive multimodal tool for monitoring chemical processes. However, monitoring multiscale signals using principal component analysis obtained from the multilevel decomposition of process signals using basic SSA assume the upper control limits of monitoring charts (" ) to have a Gaussian distribution. This assumption deteriorates the performance of basic SSA when applied to the monitoring of nonlinear processes. To address the issue in this paper, the kernel density estimation (KDE) was used to estimate upper control limits of monitoring charts for basic SSA based nonlinear process monitoring techniques. The monitoring performance of the resulting basic SSA-KDE approach was then compared with a basic SSA approach of which upper control limits of the monitoring charts were determined based on a Gaussian distribution. Application on nonlinear dynamic simulated process and base metal flotation plant chemical processes showed that the SSA-KDE approach provided better overall performance than the SSA approach with Gaussian assumption-based upper control limits for its monitoring charts. "A methodology is proposed to develop an optimization model to understand the impact of transporting minerals, from mines to the final destination, on air quality. Recently, there has been increasing concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years, and the regional environmental changes brought about by a single project. Environmental issues in the iron ore industry have highlighted the need to broaden the cumulative impact assessment. In this study, we simulated the optimal routes and quantity of materials needed to meet the destination plant demand based upon environment constraints (level of air pollution), as well as the cost of transportation and availability of materials. Multiple scenarios were developed to analyse the effects of changes in routes, alternative transport system (or multi-modal split), traffic congestion, and the cumulative impacts on air quality. The air quality impact zones of the study area were demarcated using a GIS technique. The expected outcome of the study is the selection of a suitable transport system for a particular site with the least impact on air quality, including the transportation route, relative to the minimum cost of transportation of the minerals from the mines to their final destination. The proposed methodology is evaluated with a case study. IntroductionIn India, the process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been focused primarily on the local impacts of projects, without considering regional environmental effects. Environmental clearances for proposed projects are based on reports of local impacts. However, any developmental project poses a potential risk to the environment as a whole, and not just in the immediate vicinity of the project. Recently, there has been increased concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years—the regional environmental changes due to development of a single project (Dutta, Mahatha, and De, 2004). Environmental issues throughout the country, particularly in the iron ore industry, have emphasized the need to broaden the analysis to include the combined impacts, or those forecast for a proposed region, on an existing environment. The most significant adverse environmental consequences of iron ore transportation are the deterioration of biodiversity and air quality (Kumar and Ajay, 2015)."

"A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation.Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression.The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be Possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficiaL."

Notches are used routinely for measuring the flow rate of water with free surface flows. As far as can be ascertained, no work has been done to investigate the performance of these flow rate measurement devices for non-Newtonian suspensions. The Flow Process Research Centre at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology has investigated the flow rate of kaolin and bentonite suspensions from a tank for two notch shapes, namely rectangular and triangular, and for 3 different concentrations of each suspension. The notches were calibrated using water and then the kaolin and bentonite suspensions were tested in them. The rheological characterisation of the fluids was done with a Paar Physica MC-1 rotary viscometer fitted with a cup and roughened bob. Analysis of the results shows a significant increase in discharge coefficient with increase in concentration, and the discharge coefficient has been correlated to the yield stress. This is the first such study, and further investigation is needed to confirm and extend these findings.

During the course of 2011 the nationalization of mines emerged as one of the most contentious and emotive political issues under review. Some four years after the African National Congress electoral conference held in Polokwane, which had led to a change of leadership within the country's ruling party, elements within the ruling party's youth league, which had been virulently supportive of the change in leadership, turned on the incumbent President, using the mining question as its rallying call. At issue was the expressed perception that mining has, since the country's democratization, not delivered the anticipated benefits to the population as a whole, continues to be the preserve of the capitalist element of the South African community, and is therefore in need of radical reform. Aspersions were made that transformation within the industry had failed dismally and that mining companies had not delivered against their commitments to the Mining Charter and social and labour plans. The debate became extremely vocal and heated, evoked dramatic and emotive opinions, and vigorous skirmishes on the matter were fought in the media over much of 2011 and into 2012.

Ticor South Africa operates a dry mill at the town of Empangeni in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa. The dry mill processes a non-magnetic mineral stream constituting rutile, leucoxene and zircon as major minerals, and minor quantities of ilmenite and other non-valuable minerals. For plant control and optimization, continuous ‘real time’ information about the mineral and chemical compositions in various plant streams is required. The current practice is to take samples at regular intervals and submit them for mineralogical(grain counting) and chemical analyses. However, these methods are time consuming, and in the case of manual grain counting, tedious and operator dependent. Until now an on-line or real-time instant mineral quantification system, which will be of great value in a plant operations environment, has not been available. Blue Cube Systems has developed a mineral quantification system using spectral mineral analysis. It measures and quantifies the composition of mineral samples instantly, providing consistent data in real time. A series of process stream samples from the dry mill mentioned above were used to evaluate the Blue Cube Systems instant mineral quantifier. This article will •describe the procedure of setting up and evaluating the Blue Cube Instant MineralQuantifier equipment •present its results, and •discuss the intended applications.
