The exploration of deposits generates geological data which are suitable for creating a preliminary tectonic and stratigraphic model. Linked with the topographical map and analysis data from exploration drillings, this information forms a numeric representation of the deposit. The following example demonstrates an expert system which connects chemical quality requirements and quarrying criteria, and develops a quarrying strategy based on the calculated model. Additional constraining factors like process technology, quarrying methods, landscape protection regulations, etc. are included. The goal is to guarantee a long-term, homogeneous material flow from the quarry at acceptable production costs - even in the case of an extraordinarily inhomogeneous deposit. In order to fulfil this requirement it is necessary to consider a large number of rules, criteria and instructions which can be structured as an expert system and programmed with LISP at a comparably low cost. The chosen strategy is not necessarily final, but can be changed any time by altering or varying the framework of conditions. The output consists of a block-working sequence which best satisfies the set requirements for appropriate points of quarry opening.

This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.

Designing and optimising flotation circuits are critical for mineral beneficiation plants, and therefore several procedures have been published. The modelling of flotation circuits with the objective of design and optimisation is problematic in that different approaches are used for the modelling of flotation units and regrinding units. Usually, regrinding models are based on particles characterised by their size, while flotation models are based on species characterised by fast and slow classes. The relationship between particle size and liberation can be used, but it requires laboratory studies that are time-consuming and costs are high. It is therefore not surprising that few studies on flotation circuit design and optimisation include flotation units and regrinding units simultaneously. In this paper, it is proposed to model the regrinding stage using species characterised by fine-slow, medium-fast, and coarse-slow flotation species. In deep, the regrinding model is derived from a population balance approach based on flotation species. The fraction of these species at the feed and product of the grinding unit is determined by flotation tests. Then, based on these data, the model parameters can be determined by a regression estimation procedure. A local ore was used to validate the model. Weakening rocks by taking advantage of microwave-induced microcracks is a promising solution for comminution processes. This paper investigates the effects of microwave treatment of the rock/or samples in single and multi-mode cavities. Based on the experimental results of using a 2.45 GHz microwave generator, the performance of different cavity setups and their impact on the energy effectiveness of the microwave irradiation was examined. Physical interpretations were drawn from multiple experiments with a relatively wide range of power rates and exposure times. Both basalt and kimberlite samples were used in experiments, and their results were systematically compared. For single-mode cavity tests, a microwave applicator waveguide antenna was placed at different distances from the samples to evaluate the effects of sample positioning on microwave heating, both numerically and experimentally. Eventually, cavity performance was assessed by using calorimetric test results, and strength decay was documented based on the spallation of the samples. It was found that the singlemode cavity setup has unique properties that can significantly improve the electromagnetic heating and therefore, strength degradation process. Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated into the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research centre. Fresh water conservation efforts and strict environmental regulations have forced the mining industry to reduce freshwater consumption and effluent discharge. This is achieved by recycling process water back to mining processes. The performance of flotation circuits depends on the pulp chemistry. When process water is recycled to flotation cells, organic and inorganic species that have accumulated over time alter the pulp chemistry. The presence of accumulating ionic species such as SO4 2- and S2O3 2- has been found to hinder the adsorption of collector ions onto mineral surfaces. Sulphide minerals are semi-conductors; electrochemical reactions take place on their surfaces. The adsorption of collectors onto mineral surfaces takes place via electrochemical reactions. This study, therefore, aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying ionic strengths affects the adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto chalcopyrite from an electrochemical perspective. Synthetic plant water comprised of single salts with varying ionic strengths was used. Rest potential measurements were conducted to investigate collector-mineral interactions in the presence of these ionic species. Microflotation tests were performed to determine whether the presence of these ionic species affects mineral floatability. Higher chalcopyrite recoveries were achieved in the presence of SO4 2- than in the presence of S2O3 2-. Rest potential measurements were found to successfully predict microflotation performance in the presence of the ions of interest. Ceramic filtration plates are used for dewatering slurries with high solid concentrations and particles in the size range of 30 μm to 150 μm. After extensive operating times, the ceramic filter plates at Minas Rio in Brazil begin to blind due to the precipitation of barium sulphate on the surface of the ceramic filter plate, which reduces the overall efficiency of the filtration process. Further research is needed to identify the barium precipitate phases on the blocked filter plates and its thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour in the system. A crystallography analysis was performed on the sample and the results showed that there are two different sets of precipitates formed on the filter plate: grey crystals which were large and scatted on the filter plate and red micro crystals that covered the entire surface of the filter plate. The red microcrystals on the sample were identified with XRD, which indicated that the sample contained barium sulphate in the mineral form barite. Experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions under which barium precipitation will occur. The conditions tested as a possible driving force for barium sulphate precipitation were the effect of temperature, pH and concentration. The pH and temperature ranges were pushed to both the lower and higher boundaries. The effect of temperatures as low as 15oC was studied and pH levels of 7 and upwards. The first nuclei started appearing at a pH of 7 but significant growth is promoted at higher pH levels. The X-Ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase of the precipitates formed, and the orthorhombic crystallographic structure formed is a characteristic of barium sulphate. Computer programs which rely on the assumption of linear, elastic rockmass behaviour have been used routinely for many years in the South African mining industry to determine the stresses arising in the vicinity of mining excavations. A description is given of the theoretical background and novel solution techniques used in the recently developed MINSIM-D boundary element program. Features of the program include the ability to analyse multiple interacting reef planes at arbitrary orientation to one another, slippage on fault planes and the effects of backfill placement in mined areas. Incremental mining sequences can be modelled, and digitizer and front-end routines have been written to assist in the capture of mining outlines and general problem specifications. A brief indication is given of design problems for which MINSIM-D is appropriate, as well as some future extensions of the system.

Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect any disturbance occurring in production, while decision instruments can efficiently assist decision-makers to optimize production, reduce iterative workload, obtain better solutions, and preview possible results. Technologies for the above already exist and have been proven in the process industry, i.e. refining and smelting. Optimization is also essential for profitable and stable mining production. Real-time monitoring has already taken hold in mining operations, especially in surface mining, while optimization techniques have also been widely used in underground mining, particularly for planning and scheduling. This review is limited to the hard-rock mining production of metallic ores such as gold and copper. It reviews optimization techniques developed for mine planning and scheduling, and communication technologies suitable for underground applications. It also presents control features for individual operation units, and discusses the technical viability of a mining production real-time optimization (MPRTO) system for underground mines, with possible benefits and challenges. Operational disturbances always occur in mine production. An MPRTO system can be useful to maintain operational effectiveness and efficiency by allowing quick changes to short-term plans. This paper briefly describes the MPRTO system, including the input, output, and basic algorithms. The technical prerequisites for the system specified here are already available. A control philosophy to be applied by Lonmin to maintain constant electrode immersion in their no. 1 circular smelting furnace is put forward. This control philosophy is facilitated though a combination of thermodynamic models used to predict the slag composition and empirical correlations to estimate the furnace geometric factor as well as the slag conductivity. The model can determine the operating resistance set point required in order to maintain a desired electrode immersion as a function of the feeds to the furnace, slag level and temperature. If modifying the resistance set point cannot maintain the desired immersion without moving out of the furnace P-V-I operating envelope, the model can be used to determine the amount of slag modifiers (silica or lime) required to shift the slag chemistry back into a region where the immersion can be controlled though resistance set point manipulation.

"The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

Hydrometallurgical processing of complex ores and concentrates is becoming increasingly important as the mining and metallurgical industry seeks to exploit mineral deposits that are difficult to treat using conventional mineral processing and pyrometallurgical technologies. Mineral processing is often challenged by the difficulty or inability to separate valuable minerals into marketable concentrates. Hydrometallurgical processing, using selective leaching technology, can often ?chemically beneficiate? such difficult deposits. Pyrometallurgical treatment of base metal concentrates is capital intensive and subject to ever more stringent environmental control. Hydrometallurgical processing is generally lower in capital cost for an equivalent metal production rate and avoids the gas and dust issues associated with pyrometallurgical processing. The possibility of by-product recovery may also increase with hydrometallurgical treatment. Two examples of new technology or flowsheet development for treatment of complex ores and concentrates are used as illustration. These include the El Boleo process of Baja Mining for recovery of copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese from a complex clayey ore and the PLATSOL? process for recovery of copper, nickel, cobalt, platinum, palladium and gold from a bulk sulphide concentrate.

The Talvivaara deposits are located in Eastern Finland, within the Kainuu Schist Belt. These polymetallic sulphide deposits are of relatively low grade, but bioheapleaching enables economically profitable nickel extraction from the ore. Zinc, cobalt, and copper are also produced. Talvivaara?s production process begins with large-scale open-pit mining and four crushing stages, followed by stacking of the ore in bioleaching heaps. The ore is first leached for 13?14 months on the primary leach pad, after which the leached ore is reclaimed, conveyed, and re-stacked on the secondary heap pad. After secondary leaching, the barren ore will remain on the secondary heaps permanently. In the metals recovery process, the metals are precipitated from the pregnant leaching solution. Construction of the process was begun in spring of 2007 and first metal sulphides were produced at the plant in October 2008. The development of the bioheapleaching process was begun in a 17 000t on-site pilot heap operated during 2005?2008 and has continued in the industrial heap. At industrial scale, the development measures have focused on improving the permeability and aeration of the heap. Challenges with crushing and aerations systems at the beginning of industrial-scale leaching delayed the increase in metal recovery, but after the first two operational years the leaching results have improved significantly and the process is performing as targeted.

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. ABSTRACT: The paper describes the application of both continuum and discontinuum modelling to the study of the stability conditions of the Alpetto mine, a high rock cut located in Cesana Brianza (Italy). The main objective is to provide valuable information for future mine planning and for the assessment of the stability conditions of the abandoned high rock cuts. Continuum modelling involved the applications of the finite difference method, whereas the distinct element method was used for discontinuum modelling. RESUME: L'article décrit l'application des méthodes de modélisation continue/discontinue pour l'étude des conditions de stabilité de la mine d' Alpetto, située à Cesana Brianza (Italie). Le but du travail consiste à determiner des paramètres utiles vis-à-vis du projet et d'estimer les conditions de stabilité de l'amas rocheux au terme de l'exploitation de la mine susmentionnée. La modélisation continue a impliqué l'application de la méthode des différences finis alors que la méthode des éléments distincts a été utilisée pour la modélisation discontinue. KURZFASSUNG: Der Artikel beschreibt die Verwendung der Modellierung von continuum und discontinuum zur Untersuchung/Studium der Stabilitätsbedingungen von der Alpetto Mine, hohe Aushubsfront in einer Felsmasse die sich in der Gemeinde von Cesana Brianza befindet. Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist die Festlegung von Parametern die zur Planung nützlich/behilflich sein können sowie auch die Möglichkeit zur Analyse/Auswertung der Stabilität der Felsmasse-Front nach Aufhebung der Nutzung derselben. Die continuum Methode/Analyse wurde verwendet durch Unterstützung der Finite Differenz Methode da man für die Analyse der discontinuum (Fels als discontinuum beschrieben) der Distinct Elemente Methode verwendet hat.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. When designing coal mine roof support, it is necessary to account for the uncertainties and variability that inherently exist within the rock mass and support elements. The performance of a support system is affected by these uncertainties, which are not taken into account in the current deterministic design methodologies used in South Africa. The key to the design of a roof support system is a better understanding of roof behaviour and uncertainties that can been countered during extraction. This paper sets out to develop a method that takes all uncertainties that exist within the rock mass and the mining process into account and provides a quantitative risk-based design methodology.

The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.
