The Bureau of Mines has successfully used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas to measure mine air flows under conditions where conventional methods have failed. SF6 was employed experimentally to measure accurately recirculation of return into intake air caused by leakage through an old stoped area, to check for potential leakage from an adjacent mine, to trace 10,000 cfm of “lost” air from an intake airway, and to measure transit air time through uranium mines. It proved useful as a means of accurately measuring airflow volumes in airways of large cross section and very low flow velocity, and in determining the recirculation resulting from underground cooling plants.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the hydraulic stimulation of a gob-degasification borehole to determine if this procedure would aid in degasifying a longwall panel. The stimulated borehole did not degasify the longwall panel as expected either before or after mining of the panel started. It reduced the underground methane emission only 11 pct, considerably less than the reductions effected by two unstimulated boreholes in the same panel. Some probable reasons for the reduced methane flow from the hydraulically stimulated borehole are very low reservoir gas pressure, location of hydraulically stimulated zones within the grouted casing, a casing break caused by lateral shifting, possible vertical movement of rock strata during caving, grouting of a 4-inch pipe blocking three stimulated zones, plasticity of shales, and possible hole damage by swelling of water-sensitive minerals. The borehole was also located between two second-mined areas, which may have allowed partial degasification of the overburden and the coalbed in advance of mining. Finally, a period of 3 months is probably not long enough for the borehole to degasify the overburden before mining.

The Bureau of Mines smelted samples of chromite ore and concentrate from the General Services Administration (GSA) purchasing depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in a submerged-arc furnace to establish smelting conditions and the energy requirement to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Raw material, in the form of ore, flux, and reductant, and electrical energy are available on the Pacific coast to smelt the chromite. The concentrate can be smelted without prior agglomeration by employing hogged wood (wood chips) as a major portion of the reductant. The energy requirement is relatively low, about 3,960 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. The ferrochromium produced will contain about 60 percent chromium. In addition to the smelting data, a statistical summary of the grade and amount of chromite purchased during the stockpile program and estimated chromite reserves and production volume are given. It is estimated that 632,000 tons of Cr203 contained in chromite of all grades is available in the western coastal States. Of this total there appears to be sufficient metallurgical-grade and beneficiable ore to sustain a smelting operation for 25 years at a consuming rate of 25,000 tons a year, utilizing material comparable to that delivered to the Government stockpile.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to improve the flotation response of coals that are difficult to wash by froth flotation. A literature survey and experimentation showed that, for the most part, refractory coals can be floated with oily collectors and frothers. Collector reagent consumption can be minimized and the selectivity of the flotation enhanced by assuring adequate, but not prolonged, reagent conditioning. Where flotation selectivity is especially poor, two-stage rougher-cleaner flotation is recommended. It was concluded that a major problem with refractory coals is predicting when they will appear in a flotation circuit so that supplementary flotation collectors can be added. Coal losses due to variation in the floatability of the feed might be reduced if a nonpolar collector such as kerosine or fuel oil is used along with a frother as general coal flotation practice.

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an acoustic test for determining if a rock salt sample is from a "normal" nongassy salt face or from a gassy face where an outburst has the potential to occur. The test is based on the observation that a salt sample taken near an outburst-prone zone produces an audible popping sound when it is dissolved in water. The sound is produced when pressurized gas that is trapped in salt samples is released. In the acoustic test, the sound is electronically measured, digitized, and transmitted to a microcomputer; the output is an average decibel value that classifies the sample as "normal" or "outburst." The acoustic test procedure and equipment are described, and raw test results and data analysis are shown. Results are also shown for several salt samples that were analyzed using a laser Raman microprobe.

Improve the reliability and accuracy of subsurface images using constrained tomography with enhanced ray-tracing capabilities. Background Geophysical tomography is a technique for imaging the structure of a rock mass using seismic or radio waves, in the same way that medical CAT scans image human tissue using X-rays. Tomography has found numerous practical applications related to mining, including lithologic and structural characterization, fracture detection and fluid monitoring, void detection, and evaluation of stress state and integrity of mine structures. Problems Two fundamental problems have largely prevented geophysical tomography from enjoying the tremendous success achieved by medical tomography. The first is a consequence of practical limitations on the placement of sources and receivers of wave energy: ideal resolution can be attained only when the region being imaged is entirely surrounded by sources and receivers, so that it is crossed by rays traveling in all possible directions. When such coverage is impossible or impractical, the inversion becomes underdetermined: there id not enough information in the measured data to provide a mathematically unique solution. The second major problem in geophysical tomography is the necessity for detailed ray tracing. Commercial software, as well as previous U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) software, employs a ray-shooting algorithm that may be unable to model some ray paths when velocity contrasts are larger than about 100%. These ?shadow zones" result in loss of data and degradation of reconstructed images.

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coal beds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.

To reuse chromium, nickel, and molybdenum now lost in stainless and specialty steel-making wastes, and simultaneously to overcome the current environmental problem resulting from landfilling these wastes. Approach A variety of stainless and specialty steelmaking wastes are agglomerated and recharged into the plant's electric arc furnaces. How It Works Stainless and specialty steel-making wastes such as bag-house dust from the electric arc furnace, dust from the argon-oxygen decarburization unit, grinding swart, and mill scale are blended in proportion to the ratio in which they are generated. Next they are agglomerated on a pelletizer with an addition of a small amount of carbonaceous reducing agent, and air-dried in preparation for being recharged into the furnace. Some mixtures of wastes tested in the laboratory required the addition of binders and/or the use of ovens in lieu of air-drying to produce sufficient pellet strength. Although the optimal maximum particle size of wastes being pelletized is 35 mesh, somewhat larger particle sizes were satisfactorily pelletized during in-plant tests. The photograph shows a typical mixture of wastes and the pellets made from them.

A removable-jacket distortion apparatus was constructed and used to measure distortion coefficients for two high-pressure vessels. The measured distortion coefficients were used to compute distortion coefficients for volumes VI and (V1+V2) of a 1,000-atmosphere Burnett compressibility apparatus for the temperature range 0° to 75° C. Young?s modulus for Armco 17-4 PH stainless steel, heat treated to condition H1150-M, was computed from experimentally determined distortion coefficients. A 10-to 14-percent correction to the values obtained for Young's modulus may be required because pressure vessel end effects were neglected. The distortion coefficients of the compressibility apparatus are believed to be accurate to about 1 percent.

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. This Bureau of Mines study was conducted to determine the sulfur reduction potential attainable when washing fine-size coal on a spiral concentrator. Crushed samples of Middle Kittanning and Bakerstown bed coals washed on the spiral provided pyritic sulfur reductions of up to 90 percent for the plus 200-mesh material. Pyritic sulfur reductions on the minus 200-mesh material seldom exceeded 30 percent; consequently, this material would require further treatment. The capacity of the spiral was 2 tph per unit when washing l4-mesh by 0 coal. The ability to remove pyrite combined with the higher-than-expected capacity makes the spiral worthy of consideration as a rougher-cleaner in new fine-coal desulfurization circuits.

The Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative research program with four lead companies, has investigated ferric chloride leaching of galena to prepare lead chloride for molten-salt electrowinning to produce lead metal. The hydrometallurgical-electrolytic process is an alternative to the sintering-smelting-refining process currently used to produce lead metal and avoids the environmental problems associated with a conventional smelter. During investigations on the electrowinning aspects of the work, it was noted that certain cations, moisture, and sulfate in the electrolyte affect lead metal purity, cell voltage, current efficiency, and viscosity of the electrolyte. Results of bench-scale tests are re-ported on the effects of CaCI2, CuCI2, FeCI2, MgCI2, NaCI, ZnCI2, PbS04, and moisture on electrolysis. As impurities increased in the electrolyte, current efficiency decreased. CaCI2, CuCI2, and FeC12 decreased current efficiency by 12 to 47 pct. ZnCl2 gave a small voltage increase, while CaCI2 addition equivalent to 4.9 pct Ca caused a 50-pet increase in voltage. The lead metal was contaminated in direct proportion to the CuCI2 buildup in the electrolyte, Anode corrosion was observed with MgCI2 and MgC12?6H20. Viscosity increased appreciably with the buildup of NaCI, CaCI2, and sulfate. Electrolyte foaming occurred with ZnC12, MgC12?6H20, MgC12, FeC12?2H20, and FeCI2. Moisture inhibited the coalescence of the lead metal.

Exports of agricultural products, mostly coffee, continued to account for more than 90% of Burundi's foreign exchange revenue. The country's ban on commercial mining was lifted in 1987. Mining of peat for fuel, limestone for agriculture, and clay for insecticides continued as in previous years. At yearend, Burundi's external debt stood at almost $700 million.2 Amoco Burundi, a subsidiary of the Amoco Petroleum Co., drilled two exploration wells in northern Lake Tanganyika in 1987. No oil was found, but preliminary findings were encouraging enough that further seismic surveys and offshore and onshore drilling exploration were planned in 1988. Any oil or gas finds would have substantial impact on the Burundian economy because a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports. The Zaire Government agreed in June to let Amoco Burundi explore Zaire's side of Tanganyika using the same equipment and personnel being used in Burundi.

Thermal decomposition of copper (II) sulfate (CUS04) and copper (II) oxy-sulfate (CuO?CUS04) are important steps in the overall oxidative roasting of covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S). Nonisothermal thermogravimetric techniques were used to investigate the decomposition reactions in flowing Na and air. Thermal decomposition of CUS04 and CuO?CUS04 followed "linear" kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 55±2 and 66±3 kcal per mole decomposed, respectively. These apparent activation energies comply with those previously reported when isothermal kinetic techniques were used. The addition of oxygen decreased the rate of decomposition, while small amounts of iron which were admixed with CuO?CUS04 did not have a significant effect. Neither oxygen nor iron had any appreciable effect on the apparent activation energy of the decomposition reaction.

At the present time many coal preparation plants handle coal-clay wastes in one of two methods. In one method, the waste is processed in a thickener, followed by further dewatering through filtration, and subsequent blending with coarse waste refuse from the preparation plant. The resulting mixture is then disposed by stacking it in available storage locations. The coal-clay waste is often reslurried by rain or water from other sources, causing a potentially unsafe situation such as mud flows. The other method often used requires thickening and impoundment of the thickened slurry behind earthen dams which poses safety risks if structural failure of the dams occurs. To overcome these two problems, a flocculation method was developed which produces a stable agglomerated material resistant to reslurrying. How It Works The new method involves treating coal-clay waste with lime to raise the pH and flocculating the slurry with a nontoxic polymer of polyethylene oxide. The resulting floes are dewatered on a static screen and agglomerated. For extremely fine waste, further dewatering of the material is accomplished on a rotary trammel screen. The dewatered material may be ponded or mixed with coarse waste from the preparation plant to produce a stable mixture that can be stacked.

ROCK BEHAVIOR has proved of national interest in a variety of fields. The behavior of rock consequent to a nuclear blast was used to detect such blasts, as criteria for the design of underground military defense installations that would resist nuclear blasts, and for judging the feasibility for peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. An obvious peaceful application of nuclear explosives would be for large-scale rock excavation, and plans were presented during the year to improve the present Panama Canal or create a new canal by this method. These plans were based largely on earlier crater tests that demonstrated rock behavior when subjected to a buried nuclear blast. A knowledge of rock behavior under impact was used to evaluate the materials of the moon by means of the geometric configurations visible in the close-up pictures of the moon surface taken by the U.S. rocket Ranger 7. The composition of the moon must be considered in devising methods for taking samples of the surface layers or in designing underground shelters as bases for future explorations of the moon.

Prevent the explosion of methane gas or coal dust by replacing air with inert gas inside highwall mine excavations. Approach Use combustion gases as a source of inert gas with low oxygen content to blanket the cutting, head of highwall mining machines. This gas is placed strategically at the collar of the excavation where it enters the hole to replace the mined coal volume. The elimination of oxygen from the hole prevents explosions of gas or dust. How It Works Highwall mining methods arc used when surface mining becomes uneconomical. One method of highwall mining involves use of a horizontal auger to enter the coalbed from a surface mine bench. The coal is mined in a series of horizontal, parallel, and large-diameter holes. Historically, little methane has been associated with auger mining. However, mining technology has extended the reach of auger mining, which can increase the occurrence of methane. Methane explosions at auger mining operations have been increasing. Methane has been the primary fuel source of these ignitions, but coal dust also may have been involved.

Recent observations in the field, however, have shown that not enough technical information is widely available on proper installation of the spray fan. This Technology News is designed to rectify that situation by providing a concise guide for spray fan installation. How the System Works Good ventilation is essential for methane control. The spray fan system repositions regular water sprays to help the normal exhaust face ventilation do a more effective job. The various water sprays help in many ways: 1. Side sprays bring clean air along the side of the miner into the off-curtain corner.

"Methane, frequently called fire damp or marsh gas, is very well known to coal miners but to thy average gold miner it means nothing, as it is not associated generally with the rock formations in which gold is found.We have recently been conducting a study of mine air in typical gold mines on the Pacific Coast, and out of five California mines in which the air was sampled, three showed methane. Each of these three mines, referred to below as mines A, B, and C, have had accumulations great enough to be ignited. An authentic report from another California, gold mine, which has not yet been sampled, states that recently the superintendent was seriously burned by the ignition of a pocket of gas. This mine is later mentioned as mine D.Mine A is an old mine which had been abandoned for several years and permitted to fill with water. It has been unwaterad recently, and is now being developed at greater depths. During the unwatering, gas bubbles formed on the water and upon being ignited burned freely. It is reported that two men were seriously burned from accidentally igniting the gas. Samples of the bubbles on analysis showed high percentages of methane. Since the mine has been unwatered, no trouble has been experienced through gas being ignited. However, out of a total of six air samples which we took recently in scattered working places, all showed small amounts of methane, the methane content being 0.06, 0.04, 0.05, 0.04, 0.04 and 0.07 per cent, respectively. When these samples were taken methane was not suspected, but its general presence in the mine air indicates that it is being given off constantly."
