Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.

In the fall of 1933 a new discovery of gold was made in the old Mojave mining district of California about 70 miles north of Los Angeles. It led to mining operations that have surpassed in their results all reasonable expectations and are of exceptional promise for the future. In less than 3 years, exploration has opened up a number of veins, from some of which a substantial amount of high-grade ore has been shipped, while a large tonnage of milling ore has been disclosed. Two mills, operating on ore averaging better than $12 a ton, will probably produce more than a million dollars worth of gold in 1936, and a considerable increase of their output in the following year is anticipated. While continuance of these operations for a number of years is already assured by ample reserves of ore, future discoveries of still other veins are reasonably possible, as occurrence of gold throughout the volcanic rocks of the district is widespread and the veins now being mined showed little to attract attention at the surface.

Develop a technology for producing high-quality hake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. Approach Treat the waste kish as an ore and apply mineral processing techniques of physical beneficiation and chemical purification to produce a range of graphite products com¬petitive with the natural mineral. Background Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications. It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and remains stable to extremely high temperatures It has a low coefficient of friction and is nearly impervious to corrosion. The steel industry is dependent on graphite in clay-, magnesia-, and alumina-bonded refractories for crucibles, bricks, facings, and coatings. Electrical uses include graphite brushes in motors and generators, and electrodes in batteries. The transportation industry needs graphite for clutch and brake linings, and all industries depend on graphite in seals, gaskets, lubricants, and coatings. The consumer sees graphite in composite plastics and in the common pencil. As with all natural minerals, the availability of graphite is diminishing and costs are rising as quality decreases.

Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube's deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support's resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

Several sets of questions and answers on the fundamentals of first aid to the injured, based on the Manual of First-Aid Instruction of the United States Bureau of Mines, are now in use in various parts of the United States. Persons experienced in first-aid instruction believe that a standardized set of questions and answers will assist materially in preparing men for examin- ations conducted by the Bureau for first-aid certificates. Inquiries as to whether a set of standardized questions and answers is available have been made frequently by those training men for the Bureau of Mines examination for certificates. It is believed that the following list of 171 questions and answers com- piled directly from the manual will be useful to company officials and em- ployees who are engaged in cooperative first-aid training to qualify for Bureau of Mines certificates. The list may also be used by field men of the Bureau in training instructors preparatory to a cooperative training campaign and in examining classes or individuals for first-aid certificates. This is a revision of a directory of coal research organizations throughout the world that was first published in 1961 as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8008. Because of the wide acceptance of the first edition , a revision which would supply up- to - date information on coal research and which would facilitate communication among organizations of similar interest seemed important . This compilation includes the names and activities of organizations of various types -government , university , private , and industry . The areas of investigation that each organization is engaged in are indicated in broad terms : Analysis and constitution , mining and geology , preparation , briquetting , combustion , high- and low-temperature carbonization , gasification , conversion to solid and liquid fuels , and health and safety . Publications issued by and describing the work of each organization are cited ; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press . Selected technical and trade publications that publish information on the science and technology of coal and are not published directly by any of the organizations listed are cited in the pages following the list of organizations in each country . Information that would improve coverage and accuracy of the next revision of the publication will be welcomed by the Bureau of Mines .

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the equilibrium of the system potassium carbonate (K2C03) potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) potassium bisulfide (KHS) carbon dioxide (C02) hydrogen sulfide (H2S) water (H20). Partial pressures of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were measured at 70° to 130° C. over solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent-equivalent potassium carbonate containing from 20 to 3,000 grains of equivalent hydrogen sulfide per gallon of solution. This study was made to obtain equilibrium data for evaluating the feasibility of using solutions of hot potassium carbonate for removing, hydrogen sulfide from gas mixtures. The equilibrium partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide may be correlated with the ratio of the molal concentrations of the solutes (KHC03) (KHS)/ (K2CO3). The relationship is shown graphically for the 30- and 40-percent solutions. Once this ratio is determined, the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide can be obtained from the curves. The equilibrium data show that effective removal of both carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide can be achieved simultaneously with hot solutions of potassium carbonate.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. A mineral purvey of 40,000 acres of the 42,213-acre Little Humboldt River Wilderness Study Area was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. There are no identified mineral resources but anomalous gold, silver, mercury, and arsenic concentrations were found. The study area is located in Elko County, NV, in the Owyhee Upland geomorphic subprovince. It is underlain by mid- to late-Miocene-age rhyolite, basalt, tuff, vitric ash, and tuffaceous siltstone. On the south side and partly within the study area, a mining company recently (January 1986) located 125 contiguous claims over an area of hydrothermally-altered volcanic rocks that have anomalous surface concentrations of gold, mercury, arsenic, and silver. Anomalous gold-silver concentrations in altered rocks were encountered at several other widely scattered localities in the study area. These elevated metal concentrations and associated hydrothermal alteration indicate gold resources may be present in the study area. A 20-ft-thick bed of diatomaceous earth, which contains 60 to 85 percent diatoms, crops out 0.3 mi north of the study area. Elsewhere, three samples of altered volcanic tuff taken within the study area contain from 46 to 70 percent zeolite (clinoptilolite). The diatomaceous earth and zeolite sampled are not of sufficient quality to compete with materials presently being marketed. There has been no mineral production from the study area, but a caved adit, about 25 ft long, and six prospect pits were found.

This paper describing the methods of ruining a sand, gravel, and bowlder deposit 20 miles east of Los Angeles, and the classification and preparation of these materials for market, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and cost of mining sand and gravel. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding, the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion anti study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations stall ensue. The description contained herein is typical of this industry in Southern California. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author acknowledges tine assistance of L. L. In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.

The applicability of the "direct method" for determining the methane content of virgin coalbeds was tested. Preliminary results indicate that the direct method, when applied to exploration cores, can be successfully used to estimate coalbed gas content and also approximately predict the total gas emission from a prospective mine located in the coalbed at the exploration site.

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. "Wants" in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

As part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Petroleum Research Laboratory are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the Appalachian region. The increasing demand for petroleum and its products and the increasing cost of exploratory drilling tend to emphasize the importance of improving the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Published reports setting forth the pertinent facts of these operations may help others to profit by the experience. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in West Virginia by the Piedmont Oil and Gas Co., the Ryan Oil Co., and Water floods , Inc., on their Roane County leases in the Walton and Clover Rush Run pools. The principal oil-producing horizon underlying the area studied is the Big Injun sand, at approximately 2,000 feet. The sand is often referred to as blanket sand because it underlies much of the State and is oil-productive in many localities. Most of the pools in the area were discovered during 1907 to 1910 and were similarly developed and operated.

The only economically important mineral currently produced in Bangladesh was natural gas. Bangladesh was not a world? ranked producer of any mineral commodity, but the possibility of producing and exporting commercial amounts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) was being examined. Proved reserves of natural gas were sufficient to supply most of the country's industrial and domestic heating and electric needs and still support an export-oriented LNG plant. Other mineral production was of virtually no significance to the economy, although there were a few prospects for nonmetallic mineral development. Bangladesh continued to make economic progress during 1978 and into early 1979. Gross domestic product (GDP) at current prices rose from $6.6 billion in 1976-772 to $8.2 billion in 1977?78 and $9.3 billion in 1978.79.2 In fiscal 1979, the economic conditions were favorable until a severe drought hit most of the country. It W88 reported that conditions were the worst in 40 years, and 88 of July 1979, substantial crop losses were predicted. The agricultural sector accounts for over 53% of the GDP and about 75% of all employment. The poor weather will cause economic problems in the form of slower growth, larger trade deficits, and a higher rate of inflation. The 1978.79 statistics showed that real GDP increased just 4%.

Each module is intended to be completed in roughly 10 or 15 minutes, so a Toolbox Training session can be conducted once a week for the entire year. Each session counts toward your employee’s 8-hour annual MSHA refresher training, thus saving an entire day of work.. The modules are used to refresh employees on the procedures, policies, and practices of working safely at a specific mine site and can easily be tailored to fit conditions and situations found on your property. Every module follows the same format, so that as the weeks pass, miners will start to approach every safety situation in the same way. A typical Toolbox Training session contains five basic steps that cover all the information in the module. 1. Identification of the hazard and discussions about the types of injuries typically associated with the hazard. 2. Discussions of some of the causes of the hazard. The MSHA example included with each module should be referenced. 3. After the hazard and accident has been explained and understood, discussions about best practices and tips for avoiding a similar accident. 4. Review of similar conditions or near misses from your mine site using the leading questions on the form to start a discussion. Specific examples of equipment or structures on the site that could lead to the same accident should be discussed. The blank space on the module is used to add your own remarks and questions to supplement the given information. 5. Miners fill out the training record on the back of the form with name, initials, and date of training session. The modules are designed to be kept in a standard three-ring binder and easily photocopied. This way, the same set of modules can be used for years to come. A blank form is included that can be used to create more Toolbox Training modules. The key component of Toolbox Training is to start a discussion among employees that will allow them to see the hazards around them every day and respond to these hazards in a safe and consistent manner. To start a discussion, ask questions that need more than a one-word response. Get the miners to talk about similar situations from their own experiences and give suggestions about how to fix the hazards around them. Toolbox Training is a quick and effective way to cover specific mining hazards, but it only works if miners are involved in the discussion.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory experiments to evaluate the triboelectric effect of particulate-laden gas streams on polyethylene pipe at various velocity, humidity, dust-size, and dust-load conditions. Charges in excess of 10 kV were produced on the outside and inside surfaces of laboratory pipe samples, when exposed to 40 pct relative humidity (RH) gas stream containing coal dust. However, no charges were produced in laboratory tests that duplicated the over 75 pct RH and dust-free gas streams found in working underground pipelines. Bare cop- per wire, which is wound around the polyethylene pipe in a 1-ft (31-cm) spacing and grounded, eliminated the charge on the outside surface of the pipe, but not on the inside of the pipe surface,

Case studies from four western states are used to illustrate the impact of the environmental compliance process on the mining industry. The case studies were not chosen as a statistically significant sample of all mining operations in the western United States but were chosen as representative of operations on both public and private lands and in locations that exhibited varying degrees of involvement by governmental units, non-governmental organizations and the general public. Basically, each case study was chosen because some aspect of their environmental compliance process helped to illustrate an interesting point in the regulatory process. The criteria used to select the case studies were: mines located in different jurisdictional areas, mines located in varying geological areas~ mines located in areas having different historical relationships with mining: and operations that are in production as well as those seeking an operating permit. The variety of such projects should provide the necessary foundation to evaluate the impacts of the environmental compliance process in each location.

The Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of lines has recently developed an improved method for the determination of water in pctroleum emulsions. It has been described in detail in an article entitled "A convenient method for the determination of water in petroloum and other organic emulsions" by E. W. Dean and D. D. Stark (Jour. Ind., and Enc. Chem. Vol. 12, ſay, 1920, page 436). It is essentially a modification of the familiar procedure of "distillation with an iniscible solvent", the improvement consisting in the use of apparatus that is rºck more convenient than any previously employed. The method has been used with marked success in the Bureau's laboratories for a period of about a year and has also been tried with equal satisfaction by a number of other laboratories. It has been most extensively employed for determining the water content of heavy fuel oils but has been applied also to several other types of emulsions, including shale oils, tars derived from coal, greases, and mixtures of powdered coal, oil and water. The Bureau has received a number of requests for information regarding commercial sources for the apparatus used, and having been assured of the value of the method, has taken steps to render it available for general use. - The equipment is, with the exception of two items, made of parts that are obtainable from the ordinary stock of chemical supply houses. The two exceptions are (1) the so-called "distilling tube receiver" and (2) the electric heater. The former is an essential part of the equipment; the latter is a convenient ac cessory but it can if necessary be roplaced by a gas burner. Efforts on the part of the Bureau staff to ronder these two items of apparatus available for purchase from supply houses, or for production by the user are hero described.

Limited geographically by size and geo-logically by origin, smaller countries and territories of the Caribbean are nonetheless engaging in efforts to encourage the initiation of mineral and mineral-related industries. Petroleum dominates the minerals sector, which otherwise consists principally of minor quantities of construction-oriented materials, usually for local consumption. The increased cost of petroleum has adversely affected most of the world, but these islands with their economies precariously balanced on the uncertainties of agriculture and tourism are especially vulnerable to petroleum's direct and indirect costs. In 1975, the Government of Antigua acquired the financially troubled West Indies Oil Company refinery at St. Johns. The refinery ceased operations in 1976. In 1979, negotiations were underway to sell Ashland Oil Co. an interest in the small, 20,000-barrel-per-day refinery for $6.6 million. In 1977, Antigua granted petroleum exploration rights to the Antigua Mineral Exploration Company, which planned to drill in an undefined offshore area, possibly between Antigua and Barbuda. The company expected to spend about $200,000 per year through 1982. There have been no reports on its activity.
