The heats of formation of anhydrous barium carbonate (witherite), strontium carbonate (strontianite), and lead carbonate (cerussite) were determined by solution calorimetry. The solution mediums were hydrochloric acid for barium and strontium carbonates and perchloric acid for lead carbonate. The heats of formation at 298.15° K are as follows: BaCO3 -297.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole; SrCO3 -294.6 ± 0.5 kcal/mole; and PbCO3 -168.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole.

Among the rarest of the rare metals are four that are linked together by a common historical background as well as by chemical relationship. With the excep- tion of indium, these metals are likewise characterized by the patriotic nature of the names given them by their discoverers. The existence of gallium, germanium, and scandium, was predicted by the Russian cherist, D. I. Mendeleeff some time prior to their discovery; and these elements might well have been overlooked, had not the search been stimulated by the urge to confirm the scientific hypothesis of their existence. Nowhare found in sufficient quantities to attract attention, these little known elemente are nevertheless widely distributed in the earth's crust. So far they are found commercially mostly in the sulphide ores of zinc and must be considered as being largely curiosities of the zinc smelter. Recent progress in electrolytic zinc refining, however, now gives promise that the way may be open for the recovery of these very rare metals in larger quantities-- possibly in quantities sufficient to permit of their finding commercial utilization.

This report describes the initial results of long-range research on bit life conducted by the Bureau of Mines. Three commercial bit designs -a round-nose radial, 60° conical, and 90° conical with tungsten carbide (WC) inserts -and five experimental bits were tested. Four of the experimental bits were radial designs using polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) inserts. The fifth was a 90° conical with an oversize WC insert. Bits were worn on a high-silica sandstone typical of coal mine roofs. The bits were mounted on a 34-in-diam drum section that provided a bit speed of 565 ft/min. Cutting forces were measured on a modified vertical slotter using a three-axis force dynamometer and recorded on an FM magnetic tape recorder. Changes in cutting forces, bit weight, and airborne dust due to gradual abrasive wear and catastrophic insert failure are presented. Tabulated and graphed data, photographs of the progression of bit wear, and selected qualitative visual and auditory observations of the bits taken throughout the experiment are found in the appendixes. The results show that bit life ranged from approximately 16,000 ft for the WC round-nose radial bit to over 125,000 ft for a PDC round-nose radial. Performance, in terms of bit life, cutting forces, wear rate, frictional sparking, machine vibration, and noise was in general best with the PDC bits, followed by the rotating WC bits, with the nonrotating WC bits (round-nose radial and locked 60° conical) being the worst. The results show variations in the included tip angles of new conical bits have an insignificant influence on bit performance when the effects are averaged over the life of the bit. In addition, new bits were generally found to entrain more primary respirable dust for a given cutting distance than worn-out bits. It is hypothesized that this is due to the difference in frictional behavior between new and worn bits. The results from these tests are being used in the Bureau's cutting system model (CSM).

This report details the investigation of multiple-seam longwall subsidence conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1978 to 1989. A field investigation monitored ground surface movements over four upper-seam longwall panels and six lower-seam panels. The characteristics of the subsidence occurring as a result of mining these panels are examined; in particular, the angle of draw, subsidence development, total magnitude and areal extent, and critical width are evaluated and discussed. Comparisons are also made between the characteristics of multiple-seam longwall subsidence and single-seam longwall subsidence that occurred at the same site.

The Bureau of Mines conducted seven pioneering experiments in a 12-inch-diameter Kroll reduction reactor to examine the feasibility of coreducing the chlorides of Ti, AI, and V to produce a homogeneous titanium alloy sponge. The coreduction studies proceeded in a normal manner, and the yields of sponge were comparable with those of pure titanium sponge made in the same reactor. Vanadium concentration was very uniform throughout the sponge cake when VC14 in solution in TiCl4 was fed into the molten magnesium. More difficulty was encountered in feeding solid VCl2 and AIC13. Vanadium and aluminum concentration in the sponge was not uniform, and mechanical difficulties were experienced with the small-scale screw feeder. Although the sponge varied in composition from region to region, the ingots prepared from it were uniform in composition.

This paper is one of a series dealing with the mining and crushing methods and costs of the nonmetallic industries, prepared under the sponsorship of and in cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines,. The quarrying methods described in this paper are those used at the Monocacy trap rock quarry which annually produces from 450,000 to 500,000 tons of crushed stone. This property is located 3 miles east of Birdsboro at Monacacy, Pa., and is one of the three quarries operated by the John T. Dyer Quarry Co. Throughout the paper an effort is made to explain the various methods used and the cost of operation.

A recording thermobalance ,vas used to determine the rates of oxidation of mol-ten tin over the temperature range 550°-900° C. Oxidation rates were found to vary widely for a given temperature, as previously reported by other investigators. 1 X-ray diffraction data indicated that the probable cause of these variations was the development of preferred orientations in the crystals forming the oxide film. No reasons for the differences in degree of preferred orientation were discovered. For relating the weight of the oxide formed (w) to the time of oxidation (t) an equation of the form wn = kt was found to best represent the experimental data. INTRODUCTION In the course of conducting investigations on the feasibility of using selective oxidation techniques for the purification of various metals in the molten state it was soon discovered that data on the oxidation of molten metals and alloys were very scarce. In contrast to the many hundreds of publications on the oxidation of metals in the solid state there are relatively few articles on the rates of molten-metal oxidation. In view of this scarcity of data, it was decided to institute a series of investigations into the oxidation processes of molten nonferrous metals and alloys with the expectation that the information derived could be put to practical use in developing and improving refining processes based on selective oxidation. This report is the first of a series in which oxidation data for molten nonferrous metals and alloys are presented.

This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

During World War II, when the curtailment of imports led to an unprecedented demand for domestically produced mica, beryl, and other pegmatitic minerals, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey entered upon a program designed to expedite the production of these minerals from the Black Hills area of South Dakota. The program involved mapping, sampling and drilling many pegmatite dikes found in the southern portion of the area and beneficiation tests in the field and in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Rapid. City, S. Dak., Rolla, Mo., Salt Lake City, Utah, and College Park, Md. This paper describes the mode of occurrence and the sampling and beneficiation tests on one dike, the Helen Beryl pegmatite, which was investigated as part of the general pegmatite study in South Dakota. Investigation of the Helen Beryl Pegmatite by the Bureau began in August 1943 and was terminated in April 1944. During this period the Bureau took a series of bulk samples from pits for beneficiation tests, drove an adit through the center of the dike to obtain feed for a bulk-sampling plant operation, and finally drilled a series of long holes to sample the deposit further. Geologists of the Federal Geological Survey mapped the deposit and the faces of all excavations and logged drill holes from sludge samples recovered from long-hole drilling.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. [The Harrington-Hickory mine in the Star raining district, Beaver County, Utah, has produced approximately 20,000 tons of lead-zinc-silver ores since 1910. Production previous to 1910 is not known. The mine is owned by the New Majestic Mining Co. The property was rehabilitated and operated by James D. Williams under a 10-year lease with option to purchase from April 1943 to May 1949, Loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in the aggregate of $41,000 wore used in construction of an access road, rehabilitation of the mine, and purchase of equipment for full-scale operation. The improved, all-weather access road extends from loading ramps on the Union Pacific Railroad at Milord to the urine storage bins 5 miles west o f town. The mine is serviced electrically by a. 5,000-volt line owned by Telluride Power Co. Mine transformers step the voltage down to 440/220/110 for surface and underground service.]

Traditionally, fine coal is more troublesome than the coarser sizes at every step of the coal-preparation process--screening, cleaning, dewatering, and drying. Therefore the present trend toward a higher proportion of fines in the run-of-mine product, brought about by changes in mining practice necessitated to increase productivity, has added greatly to the task of preparing coal for the market. One of the more difficult and costly problems involved is that of recovering fine solids from the washery water. These fine solids should be recovered in the interest of conservation, and they must be removed to provide recirculating water of proper quality. If there is a plant effluent, it must meet increasingly stringent requirements against stream pollution. Vacuum filtration has been used for years at a few plants to recover the extreme fines, but its additional cost discouraged general adoption until recently. Now, with growing emphasis on better solids recovery, filtration is becoming more widespread. Many coal slurries filter readily, giving high cake rates and clean filtrates. Others, however, particularly those containing either a high proportion of material finer than 200-mesh or an appreciable amount of clay, are much more difficult to filter. Many of these refractory slurries can be rendered more filterable by flocculation. A previous report of Bureau of Mines research dealing with flocculation alone was published in 1940.5/

The literature on the activation of sphalerite for flotation by short¬chain xanthates leaves unanswered the question of whether a compact surface film of activator sulfide is necessary or merely sufficient for high flotation recoveries. Studies by Guarnaschelli and Plaksin indicate that xanthate adsorption and flotation of sphalerite are increased with increasing hole/ electron ratio. These results, and the known acceptorlike behavior of many heavy-metal impurities in zinc sulfide, suggest that activation may result from a traditional semiconductor doping effect at the surface. Using the theory of chemisorption states on ionic crystals as developed by Levine and Mark, the Bureau of Mines has carried out A calculation to estimate the surface-state energies of various metals when they are substituted at zinc sites on (110) sphalerite surfaces. Based on a simple Madelung-Born treatment of ionic solids, the calculation indicates that many of the metals known to activate sphalerite for subsequent flotation have lower surface-state energies than nonactivators. The results of these calculations are discussed from the standpoint of consistency with the proposed activation mechanism and observed flotation results. The satisfactory agreement obtained is taken to be support for the proposed mechanism, and further elaboration of a surface-doping model is attempted.

The objective of this program was the development, design, and fabrication of six personal-sized completely self-contained dust monitors capable of real-time as well as time-averaged monitoring of the concentration of respirable particles in coal mines, in the range of 0.1 to 100 mg/m3. The operation of these monitors is based on light scattering and passive air sampling. The design stressed overall miniaturization, ruggedness, simplicity and versatility. These instruments incorporate a single-chip CMOS microprocessor to perform all signal processing, data display and storage, and timing functions. The overall dimensions of these devices are, approximately, 10 by 10 by 5 cm.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the potential for recovering aluminum from copper-dump leach liquors by use of single-contact ion-exchange technology. A strongly acidic ion-exchange resin was used to extract aluminum from a typical dump leach liquor and from synthetic leach liquors. Aluminum was stripped from resin with a HS04 or NaCl solution. Bench-scale experiments indicate that a single-contact ion exchange is technically feasible, but that the process is limited by the relatively low loading capacity of the resin and the excessive amount of stripping agent required. A further limitation is that significant amounts of magnesium and iron are loaded and stripped along with the aluminum.

This paper describing the practice at the concentrator of the Minas de Matahambre, S. A., is one of a series being; prepared by the Bureau f Mines on milling methods and costs. The Minas de Matahambre, S. A., concentrator treats the production of the Matahambre mine and has a capacity of 1,300 tons of copper ore per day by selective flotation. During the year 1930 the heads averaged 4.55 per cent copper, the concentrates 29.20 per cent copper and the recovery was 95.96 per cent.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to determine how well the Bendix BDX 60, the Gilian HFS 113U, the MSA Fixt-Flo, and the Spectrex PAS-3000 dust sampling pumps control the flow rate at 2 L/min. These tests were performed because users need to know the performance characteristics of sampling pumps to select the pump that best satisfies their sampling requirements. Long-term (6- to 8-h) flow stability at various backpressures was examined in relation to the flow control tolerance of ±5% of the flow, the level imposed by Federal regulations; four of the five Bendix pumps did not meet the criterion for this test, which was passed by all other pumps tested. Flow control recovery times were measured at transient backpressures; all pumps evaluated met the criterion for this test. The low-flow indicators of the sampling pumps were tested; only two Bendix pumps and one Gilian pump met the criterion of indicating a flow change greater than ±5%. In the pulsation flow measurement test all of the pumps passed, with pulsating flows greater than 20 Hz. The Bureau also evaluated the manuals accompanying the sampling pumps. All were judged adequate except the Spectrex manual, which was judged poor.

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.

In 1984, the Bureau of Mines evaluated an area previously identified as having "probable mineral resource potential" for copper, lead, zinc, gold, or silver within the Elkhorn Wilderness, about 5 miles west of Winston, MT. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mineralized structures at nearby mines and prospects outside of the Wilderness extend into and contribute to the anomalous zone and, if so, to expand the domestic supply of strategic and critical mineral resources for future needs by identifying and quantifying resources on public lands. Fifty-eight soil samples, 23 rock samples, and 1 stream sediment sample were collected in the Staubach Creek area. Overall sample analyses suggest the anomalous zone in the Staubach Creek drainage is possibly associated with -.mall pyritiferous quartz veins. These veins or veinlets may be part of a system of northeasterly-trending structures prevalent in this art of the Wilderness. However, there is not sufficient evidence to prove that identified resources outside of the Wilderness extend into it in the Staubach Creek drainage, or that economic base- or precious-metal deposits are likely.
