Surface resistivity techniques were used at four field sites to monitor changes in apparent resistivities with variations in soil moisture content in the vadose zone. Apparent resistivity values were correlated with gravimetric moisture contents from soil samples taken at each site. Tensiometer readings were taken at two sites and correlated with the results of gravimetric moisture contents and apparent resistivities. Moisture at two of the sites was added by extensive watering; rainfall events were monitored at the other two sites. A recharge event at a dewatering program was monitored at a fifth site. A Ghosh-Koefed multi-layer computing algorithm was used to derive true resistivities from bulk or apparent resistivities. An automated data acquisition system was developed to measure resistivity changes and to process the data in the field. These studies are the first to evaluate measurement of moisture migration in clay rich soils using surface resistivity techniques. Results indicate that surface resistivity techniques readily measure changes in moisture contents in the vadose zone in clay rich soils. Correlation of apparent and true resistivity values with gravimetric moisture contents is more complex and requires additional research.

This report describes experimental investigations made in the batchwise retorting of Colorado oil shale. Three heat-carrying mediums were used -hot shale gas, superheated steam, and hot flue gas. Using hot Shale gas for retorting, the several variables studied were retort-inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity through the shale bed, shale particle size, and grade of shale. In studying the effect of any one of these variables on oil yield, as and operability, the other variables were maintained essentially constant. Oil yields decreased with increasing in-let-gas temperature and increasing shale-particle size, and oil yield increased with increasing grade of Shale up to 50 gallons of oil per ton of shale, beyond which the process was inoperable because of swelling and caking of the shale during retorting. Changes in gas velocity had little effect on oil yield. Gas yield increased with increasing inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity, particle size, and shale grade. Oil yields of 100 percent of Fischer assay and from 1,600 to 1,800 cubic feet of 300-B.t.u. gas per ton of shale were obtained. Two runs only were made using superheated steam. Oil yields averaged 97 percent of Fischer assay, and gas yields averaged 4,00o cubic feet per ton of shale. Retorting with a hot flue gas produced from combustion in the shale bed, as in the N-T-U process, gave excellent yields using closely sized shale with recycling of flue gas. An excess of fine shale in the charge resulted in channeling and low oil yields. Using no recycle gas, good yields were obtained that tended to decrease with increasing air rate, and the retorting rate increased with increasing air rate over the range studied. Coking was not found serious with 30-gallon shale at the air rates used.

A 5-hole pattern was drilled from the surface at a site near Oak Grove, Jefferson County, Ala., to degasify the gassy Mary Lee coal bed in advance of mining. Gas and water production was monitored for 1 year, 4 months to allow gas flow to stabilize fully. A thickened water stimulation treatment was designed and applied in one hole of the pattern to evaluate this degasification technique for the Mary Lee coalbed. A gas production rate of 70,000 fts/day after stimulation treatment indicates that the use of vertical boreholes coupled with hydraulic fracturing in advance of mining the Mary Lee coalbed would provide for more rapid degasification and could provide a possible source of natural gas.

This report expands an earlier study by Jack Faucett Associates (OFR #40-88) of the same title. Both reports are based upon an interindustry analysis from 1963 through 1982, during which time U.S. metals consumption and production did not keep pace with economic growth. The report discusses three sources of change: technological change, economic growth, and composition of final demand, as well as the relative importance of the individual components of final demand for metals. The results show investment and personal consumption to be the most metal-intensive components of final demand, and technological change to be the major cause of decline in consumption growth during the study period. Technology change is defined as alterations in production processes resulting in more or less consumption of metal per unit of output, often because of material substitutions and design changes. A trade analysis shows the significance of import growth, particularly indirect imports (metal contained in imported goods) as a factor contributing to the reduced growth rate of domestic metal production. The effect of import growth is partially offset by indirect export growth, suggesting that continued increase of all U.S. exports can have a strong effect in reducing the negative trade balance in metals.

Low- and high-temperature reduction techniques were employed by the Bureau of Mines in study of conditions favorable to the formation of massive titanium crystals. '1,1,2 low-temperature method, feeding molten sodium to solidified titanium lower chloride-sodium chloride, produced higher quality and high quantity crystalline metal. The percentage of crystalline titanium was increased with increasing reactor diameter, melt depth, and titanium dichloride concentration. The high-temperature technique, feed molten sodium to melts above 8000 C, producing needle-type crystals of lower quality and with less consistent results than the low-temperature method. Layers of titanium foil, sponge, fine needles, wool, and crusts of sin-tered granules were formed during the earl, -art of the low-temperature reduction, and massive crystals were produced beneath this barrier in the latter part of the reduction. Crystalline titanium having an average hardness of Bhn 76 and representing 58 percent of the total titanium was obtained. Lamellar crystals up to 1 1/2 inches long with a hardness as low as Bhn 54 were also produced. A second-stage reduction for reclaiming titanium from offgrade sponge is described. Titanium produced by this method was comparable in quality to that from sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride.

This report describes a mathematical procedure for analyzing size distribution data by the method of moments. The method was applied to Andreasen's data on a variety of grinding mill products. It was found that the observed size distributions could be represented by gamma and beta distribution functions over a wide range of sizes. A computer program, written in BASIC, is described for calculating moments, distribution parameters, and the weight fraction in any size range.

Typically, the majority of such traffic consists of trucks hauling either mine product or waste [rum the surface mime pit and/or the processing plant. Fugitive dust generated along these unpaved mine roads includes particles of all sizes which become airborne. The potential hazards include the deleterious effects to human health of inhaled dust, traffic visibility hazards and environmental impacts on the localized area by the larger-sized visible airborne dust. Two held surveys were recently conducted to quantify fugitive dust generation and dispersion from truck traffic on unpaved and untreated mine haulage roads For these surveys., airborne glow sampling was conducted at multiple sampling fixations away from an unpaved haulage road at a limestone quarry/plant and at a coal mine preparation plant lo measure the size characteristics, concentrations. and dispersive behavior of the dust cloud generated from truck traffic- Results show that at least 80% of the airborne Just generated by haul trucks was larger than 10 µm- Airborne respirable, thoracic, and total dust concentrations all decreased and approached background concentrations 30.5 in (100 feet) from the road This report describes the average and instantaneous peak dust levels that were measured tip to 30.5m (100 feet) Iron the haulage road. In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 x 106 to 0.06 x 106 m3/d, but rates over 0.10 x 106 m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to' several factors, including completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension because of the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location, which is in compression. Analysis of 7 months of gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, more commonly known as soda ash, is the most important of the alkalies. Sulfuric acid is the only heavy chemical, Soda ash enters the market either as the natural product or as a manufactured derivative of common salt. Notwithstanding their common occurrence in closed basins of the Western States, natural sodas are produced at present by only four firms, all in the same California area, and satisfy only 4 percent of domestic demand for soda ash; soda ash made from salt supplies 96 percent of the requirements. The impossibility in wartime of routing all westbound American shipping through the Panama Cami.l has curtailed Pacific Coast receipts of soda ash and-increased the importance of local resources of natural carbonates. One of the most promising of ·these is the recently discovered trona (sodium sesquicarbonate)· deposit 2o·mnes· west of Green River, Wyo. Reserves are likely to run into hundreds ·of million·s of tons, and the deposit probably could be worked by the room-and~pillar· system of mining, like common salt or coal. • • Raw materials ·ne·cessary for manufacturing synthetic soda ash occur closely associated in m·afiy parts· bf the United 8tates. Almost unlimited resources of salt in brines and in rock-salt depbsits are located near limestone quarries in many areas. The Bureau of Mines and the University of Illinois investigated surface characteristics and damage to structures from mine subsidence over a room-and-pillar coal mine in Hegeler, IL. Data on three adjacent subsidence sags and associated structural damage were collected, summarized and evaluated. The subsidence sags developed over a 10-year period and took place above a modified room-and-pillar operation mining the Herrin (No. 6) coal at a depth of 130 to 135 ft. Surface vertical displacements of 3.0 to 3.5 ft resulted from extracting 6.1 to 6.4 ft of coal. Ground movements associated with sag formation severely damaged three houses and a radio station building, broke numerous utility lines, and structurally distorted three radio transmission towers. The radio station was remodeled and the towers repaired, but the three houses were subsequently demolished. Surface waters collecting in the subsidence depressions caused failure of radial ground transmission systems. The following subsidence profile characteristics were determined at the radio station and one of the houses, respectively: profile slopes, 0.02 and 0.07; maximum curvatures, 2.3 x 10-4 ft-1 and 3.0 x 10-4 ft-1; and angular distortions, 6.6 x 10-3 and 62.0 x 10-3. Although the house was more severely damaged than the radio station, both structures are classified as severely to very severely damaged.

The operation of combustion engines of various types at high altitudes and other combustion processes at reduced pressures have made it desirable to determine limits of flammabilities -under these conditions. Experiments carried out by the Bureau of Mines have shown that although natural gas-air mixtures become more difficult to ignite as the pressure is reduced below atmospheric, with a suitable source of ignition the limits of flammability are as wide at 175 mm mercury absolute as they are at atmospheric pressure.

High-temperature heat-content values of pure lutetium sesquioxide and dysprosium sesquioxide were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. Similar data for cerium sesquioxide were calculated from measurements of a mixture of cerium sesquioxide and dioxide and known values for cerium dioxide. The results for lutetium sesquioxide are regular. Dysprosium sesquioxide has a minor thermal anomaly near 1,590° K, the extra heat absorption being 220 cal/mole, Hexagonal cerium sesquioxide undergoes a transformation around 1,050° K, which is only slowly reversible; consequently results were obtained for both the low- and high-temperature varieties. The original heat-content data are reported, and smooth values of heat content and the corresponding entropy increments are tabulated. Equations were derived to represent the heat-content values.

Sodium-aluminum and calcium-aluminum silicates are important rock-forming minerals. While many of them are of only theoretical interest, several are of practical importance--as ceramic raw materials and as potential future sources of aluminum. Heretofore, thermodynamic data for these minerals were incomplete; and in many instances missing data were difficult to estimate reliably. This has seriously hampered thermodynamic calculations pertaining both to the natural formations of these minerals and to their decomposition in sintering and fluxing reactions. This paper reports the results of the Federal Bureau of Mines measurements of low-temperature heat capacities of four crystalline silicate minerals--dehydrated analcite (NaAlSi2O6), hexagonal anorthite (CaA12 Si208), lawsonite (Ca2Al2Si2080?2H20), and leonhardite (Ca2Al4Si8C24?7H2O). It augments previous similar measurements of related minerals, which were summarized recently.4 The measured heat-capacity data were used to derive entropy values for the four minerals at 298.15° K. Some relations between these entropy values and those of other similar minerals were discussed. These relations illustrate the difficulty of estimating entropy values of tertiary (or higher) silicates.

"IntroductionSince the establishment of the star,just concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines.Particular areas of success have been implementation of better coal-cutting strategy to control dust generation, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomski, 1983).While dust concentrations in mining sections have been dropping considerably, one problem area has been mining sections where quartz is a considerable portion of the airborne dust. The federal regulations require that quartz content must be held below 0.1 mg/m3 in the air regardless of the concentration of the total dust. This legislation limits the allowable dust concentration to a ""reduced standard"" of 10/ (% quartz) when the quartz content of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere is more than 5%. Today, approximately one-third of underground coal mining operations have designated areas with more stringent dust standards in place, and many mines experience considerable difficulty in meeting these standards (Jankowski, and Babbitt, 1989).It is well known that metal miners subjected to respirable dusts high in quartz have a higher incidence of silicosis than those exposed to dust low in quartz. However, the role of quartz in the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis is still a highly controversial question, in spite of the large number of research projects devoted to this subject over the last 20 years. Because coal seams contain less quartz than metal ores and quartz often comes from sources outside the coal seam (e.g., roof and floor), it is difficult to relate studies that deal with the quartz content in coal seams and the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Hamilton, Ogden, and Vincent (1983) have provided a plausible explanation for the incidence of the disease by hypothesizing that the quartz content does not affect the probability of developing pneumoconiosis until some threshold value (generally thought to be about 10%) is exceeded.The objective of the research studies summarized here was to obtain a better understanding of quartz occurrences in airborne coal mine dust by studying the variations of the quartz levels in different dust sizes and the relationship between the quartz content in airborne coal mine dust and the quartz content in the mined material. The implications of the results to control of dust in high-quartz sections will also be discussed."

Concentrating, nodulizing, and smelting studies were conducted at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines to determine whether (1) western iron ores of the type found in the Carter Greek deposit near Dillon, Mont., could be utilized; (2) concentrates of acceptable grade with good iron recovery could be attained by wet-magnetic beneficiation; (3) nodulized concentrates could be smelted with reductants readily available in Montana; (4) iron concentrates could be smelted without prior agglomeration; and (5) high-purity iron could be produced directly from high-grade concentrates, Three small samples and two tonnage samples from the Carter Creek deposit were uniform in chemical composition, and their iron content averaged about 31 percent. They were found to be banded gneisses, and magnetite was the principal iron-bearing mineral.

This report describes the design, and development work performed to reduce the volume and weight of the miners caplamp battery, as well as a headpiece with a swivel mechanism containing a halogen bulb with two filaments. Work was also conducted in the development of a maintenance free battery. The design concept is based on non-sintered Ni-Cd technology, with an energy density of 22 Wh/lb. The cap lamp system developed has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and can be manufactured for mine use.

Wyoming County had for many years supplied large quantities of coking coals to coke plants throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Up to the present most of the coal has been produced from relatively few beds, but in the future the coal will be produced from beds not previously mined in quantity. This trend is shown in the entire Winding Gulf field, of which Wyoming County is a part. This publication is one of a series of Bureau of mines reports appraising the Nation's coking coal, which y be used to determine the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. This investigation of the preparation characteristics of Wyoming County coals is the third of the series undertaken in West Virginia.

Electrolysis of titanium carbide and a material consisting of titanium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as soluble anodes in Used electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of crude titanium metal. Tests made in all-chloride electrolytes showed only a low recovery of titanium as well as a substantial volatilization of titanium trichloride (TiC13) when present in the electrolyte. Electrolysis at 750° to 850° C in a mixture containing 85 percent NaC1-15 percent potassium floutitanate (K2TiF6) yielded as high as 91 percent recovery of titanium from titanium carbide and 62 percent recovery of titanium from the titanium-carbon-nitrogen-oxygen material. Problems associated with the preparation of crude metal by fused-salt electrolysis are discussed. The crude metals produced from both anode materials were electrorefined in a sodium chloride-titanium chloride (NaCl-TiC12) electrolyte, and ductile titanium metal was obtained.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, as of January 1, 1954 there were 337 refineries with a total daily crude-oil throughput capacity of 8,006,897 barrels. The total daily capacity increased 368,236 barrels during the year while the total number of refineries declined 6. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1953 from 22,270 barrels to 23,759. With the exception of the Texas Inland, all refining districts reported gains in the installed capacity for the year, the largest being the Louisiana Gulf Coast with an increase of 20 percent. A total of 397,500 barrels of additional crude oil capacity was reported as under construction January 1, 1954. Accounting for 129,500 barrels of this total are facilities for 3 new refineries in North Dakota, 2 in Washington and I each in Ohio and Utah. Equipment being installed to replace existing units, totaled 180,750 barrels daily.
