Following World War II, the rapid increase in both military and civilian activity in the area served by the Alaska Railroad stimulated interest in the availability of local sources of nonmetallic minerals that might be used for building materials. Except for abundant sand and gravel and some pumice, the construction industry of the area depended entirely on high-cost imports for building materials of mineral origin. Because continued rapid growth was anticipated, development and use of local sources of such materials was advocated by both military and civil authorities to reduce the high costs of con¬struction and bolster the unstable economy of the area. The U.S. Department of the Interior began a program On included examining the numerous deposits of nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad to determine their possible use as raw materials for the construction industry. Preliminary field investigations were made by the Geological Survey. The more promising deposits were subsequently examined and sampled by Bureau of Mines engineers, and the samples were subjected to the laboratory tests necessary to indicate the chemical and physical characteristics of the raw materials or their products. Such field and laboratory investigations were conducted on clay, shale, argillite, limestone, gypsum, and pumice taken from various parts of the area. In initial phasees of the work, done irate 1948 through 1952, many of the deposits examined were suitable for proctoring building materials. Results of the work completed during that period have been published in a Bureau of Mines report3 giving general information and detailed data on more than 35 deposits that were investigated.

"There is a considerable need for standardized respirable dusts with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. The availability of such materials should be a significant factor in promoting coordinated research into dust characterization and mine monitoring, dust control, and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology. The use of an opposed-jet, fluid-energy grinding system in closed circuit with a cross-flow, centrifugal air classifier for preparing bulk quantities of respirable-size dust has been investigated, and appropriate, standardized procedures have been established. By stage-crushing, screening, and fine-grinding with a Donaldson Acucut classifier/mini-grinder system, it is possible to produce bulk quantities of respirable dust at relatively high rates. Using minor modifications to the system, broader or narrower size distributions can be prepared within the respirable range. The system has been shown to reach steady-state with respect to product size distribution very rapidly. However, preferential grinding/classification effects appear to lead to a slow build-up of mineral matter in the circulating load with a corresponding slow change in product composition with time. In those applications where the dust composition is required to match that of the feed coal, it may be necessary to allow considerable time for a true steady-state to be established.Standard respirable dust samples have been prepared from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared. Extensive characterization studies have been performed on the samples to evaluate chemical and mineralogical composition and the distributions of particle size and specific gravity. Detailed information on the original coals is available from the Penn State Coal Data Base. The standard coal dust samples appear to simulate actual mine dust very well with respect to particle size and shape, but generally have somewhat lower ash content. Samples of these standard dusts have been made available to research groups concerned with respirable dust in mines."

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted a mineral resource investigation of the French Creek-Patrick Butte study area, in west central Idaho during 1989. No mineral resources or significant occurrences were identified. Other than small scale placer gold, no mineral production is known or recorded. At least 100 lode and 150 placer claims have been located in the study area. Most of the area was examined by ground or areal surveys, and 110 lode and 60 placer samples were taken. Four lode prospects were examined in detail, and all placer claim locations were sampled.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments in the intermediate-scale fire tunnel to assess the influence of air velocity on the gas production and smoke characteristics during smoldering and flaming combustion of Pittsburgh seam coal and its impact on the detection of the combustion products. On-line determinations of mass and number of smoke particles, light transmission, and various gas concentrations were made. From these experimental values, generation rates, heat-release rates, production constants, particle sizes, obscuration rates, and optical densities were calculated. Ventilation has a direct effect on fire detection and development. The results indicate that, in general, increased air velocity lengthened the onset of smoke and flaming ignition, increased the fire intensity, but decreased the gas and smoke concentrations. Increased air velocity also lengthened the response times of all the fire sensors tested. Rapid and reliable detector response at this most crucial stage of fire development can increase the possibility that appropriate miner response (fire suppression tactics or evacuation) can be completed before toxic smoke spreads throughout the mine.

Techniques were developed and circuitry was assembled for measuring the total and volume resistances to the flow of electric current through solid specimens of anthracite. The two-, three-, and four-terminal test methods demonstrated the extreme sensitivity of resistivity to differences in anthracite characteristics and showed response to changes resulting from variations in structure, temperature, and moisture content.

This report presents preliminary results of a study undertaken to investigate quantitative characteristics of the demand for steel mill products and its major end-use components. The major end uses included in the study are the steel mill products used in construction, in automobiles, in producer durables, and in consumer durables. The main objectives of the research underlying this study are as follows: (1) To formulate and estimate the empirical demand relations for steel and the four major end uses in the United States; (2) to measure and calculate the responsiveness of the U.S. per capita steel consumption with respect to the changes of the steel and other nonferrous metals prices; (3) to determine and quantify the relative importance of the underlying demand explanatory factors in contributing to the average year-to-year increases (or decreases) of the U.S. per capita steel consumption; and (4) to adapt and use the estimated demand relations in making projections of the U.S. future demand for steel and the major end-use components. After extensive preliminary investigation, three versions of simple linear demand relations are selected and estimated by means of ordinary least squares (OLS) method. The annual data for the period 1947-65 are used in the estimation. Direct and cross price elasticities of demand are computed for each of major end uses. The relative importance of demand explanatory factors in contributing to the average year-to-year changes of U.S. per capita steel consumption are also calculated. For making projections, a simple autoregressive time trend model is used in estimating the future values of independent variables. Since the estimated demand relations are valid for projections only if the estimated parameters can be assumed to be unchanged in the future, and consequently, the projections derived in the study should be interpreted accordingly.

After nine years of negotiations, the U.N. Conference on the Law of the Sea approved a Law of the Sea Treaty text in April. Israel, Turkey, the United States and Venezuela voted against the text and 17 other nations including Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and West Germany abstained. These nations still have the option of joining the treaty when it is opened for signing in December. However, the Reagan Administration has stated that several provisions of the deep seabed mining portion of the text are unacceptable and it seems unlikely that the United States, at least, will change its position. ALUMINUM Reynolds Metals Co. has criticized an Oregon state plan to relax air pollution standards for aluminum plants. The company feels that relaxation of the rules does not go far enough. Reynolds officials say that they have spent about $31 million at their Troutdale plant for state-of-the-art pollution control equipment, and if they are required to make the pollution reductions called for in the 1986 rules, Reynolds would be forced to close the 40-year-old plant.

The Bureau of Mines conducted both laboratory and field investigations to study the effectiveness of medium-pressure (up to 30,000 psi) water jets in controlling the generation of airborne respirable dust during the hydraulic fragmentation of coal. Laboratory studies were conducted at the Farmington High Energy Test Site of the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, and field studies were carried out at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, Mount Morris, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The water jets were produced by commercially available triplex pumps. The dust samples were collected by midget impinger samplers, and analyzed by electronic and optical counting techniques. Respirable dust concentration for a full-scale production model was projected at below 2 mg/m3, the maximum exposure allowed by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Bureau of Mines for the intermetallic compound, TiA13. Heat capacities were obtained from 5 to 303 K by adiabatic calorimetry. The derived value of S2 1s is 22.08±0.07 cal/deg¬mole. Enthalpies relative to 298 K were obtained from 298 to 1,413 K by copper-block drop calorimetry. No anomalous thermal behavior was noted in the temperature ranges investigated. Low- and high-temperature data were combined with a known enthalpy of formation at 298 K to give values of enthalpy of formation and Gibbs energy formation, 0 to 1,400 K.

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the weight and bulk of equipment that mining personnel must carry underground, the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) investigated accurate and convenient gas samplers for use by mine inspectors in sampling mine atmospheres. The samplers are septum-stoppered glass vials commonly used for routine blood sampling. These lightweight, compact samplers yield results comparable with those obtained with conventional bottle samplers of 250-ml nominal capacity.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

Exploring for additional ore bodies on the property of the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Co.'s property at Idria, Calif., was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. It comprised a study of the geology, mapping, and searching for additional cinnabar by diamond drilling from both surface and underground. Diamond-drill equipment was moved to the project in November 1941, and drilling was completed in.May 1942. Sixteen holes aggregating 2,580 feet were drilled. Diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines developed information regarding ore structures that proved valuable to the operators in planning underground prospecting that led directly to the discovery of high-grade ore.

"The Hull mine of the De'Bardeleben Coal Corporation is located in the Warrior field, in Walker County, Ala., about 25 miles northwest of Birmingham. The Mary Lee bed at this point is coking coal and has been used in the manufacture of by-product coke, but at present it is sold exclusively as a domestic and locomotive fuel.The data in this paper, which is the third in a series on the washability of Alabama coals,5 have been obtained in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators. The paper contains screen-sizing and float-and.-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness tests and crushing tests of certain sizes.In addition, complete analyses of the ¾-inch to 3/16-inch size, raw coal, together with ash fusibility tests of the float-and-sink fractions have been made; those results are given in Tables 1 and 2. Since they indicate that the pr ration problem, like that at Lewisburg, Ala., is one of ash reduction, the further tests and the discussion have been restricted to that subject."

A vertical air shaft in the Birmingham, Ala., iron district was sunk with a circular cross section and lined with concrete at a relatively low cost to provide needed ventilation for an iron-ore mine. The method of sinking the shaft is described, and the costs are stated in mar-hours with a descriptive list of equipment and a statement on the size and use of temporary buildings. Preparation began May 2, 1955, and the shaft was completed at a depth of [680] feet by September 22, 1956. By October 1956, all temporary building and [aft]-sinking equipment had been removed. The total direct-labor cost for the operation, including preparation and dismantling, was 50,700 man-hours, or 30.2 man-hours per foot. Total rock and dirt removed amounted to 17,523 cubic yards (in place), and the shaft lining required 4,635 cubic yards of concrete to form a circular air shaft with an inside diameter of 16 feet.

[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. The success of any project in which gas is injected into oil-producing sands to increase the current rate or the economic ultimate production of oil or in which surplus gas from oil-producing operations is stored temporarily in reservoir sands that have been wholly or partly depleted of their producible oil depends mainly upon an understanding of the underground movements of oil, water, and injected gas and the ability to control their speed and direction of migration through the reservoir sends. Many operators believe that injected gas always travels up the structure and drives oil to wells structurally higher than the injection wells, because the specific gravity of the injected gas is less than that of the fluid substances in the formation. Consequently, many injection wells are located on the flanks of oil-bearing structures with the idea of utilizing the energy of the injected gas to drive the oil to producing wells higher on the structure. It is true, under certain conditions of pressure and fluid depletion of the reservoir sands that injected gas will move in an up-structure direction, but the theory that injected gas always moves up the structure is based on an erroneous conception of the laws that pertain to the expansion of gases. By definition, "a gas is distinguished by its property of infinite expansion and is limited in volume only by the walls of the vessel which contains it." The expansion of gas that is injected into reservoir sands also is limited by "walls" that surround the space influenced by the injected gas. The walls of the majority of undrilled or virgin oil-bearing reservoirs in California are the impervious shales overlying and underlying the productive strata and the "dams" or effective barriers of edge water around the rims of the reservoirs. When gas is injected into the sands of a producing reservoir, regardless of the location of the injection well on the structure or the degree of depletion of oil from the sands, one of the walls which confine the gas in the structure about the injection well is fluid. This wall will be edge water in a nearly depleted reservoir, where the drainage cones or regions of reduced pressure about injection and producing wells intersect; and, where there is no interference of drainage cones and the injection well is structurally above the edge water, the wall will be oil. In some producing reservoirs bottom water may be the lower wall of the space that confines the gas about injection wells, but the effect of bottom water on limiting the expansion of gas is the same as if the water was not present and impervious formation separated the producing from the underlying nonproducing strata. Therefore, since compressed gas always seeks regions of reduced pressure and its final volume is limited only by formation and fluid barriers and since the force exerted by the gas under pressure is equal in all directions, the course of migration of injected gas in reservoir sands in California and the effect of the gas pressure on fluid movement does not depend necessarily upon the up-structure location of low-pressure regions.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as at Point Albino, Canada. The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence was by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of test Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the Production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is made of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen iron the standpoint of safety and health hazards, hydrogen sulphide in the petroleum industry has been discussed in a number of publications. Likewise, the problem of hydrogen-sulphide corrosion of production equipment has been given considerable attention in the literature.
