The objective of this project was to collect information applicable to the design of ground support systems in deep mines to include in-situ rock deformations, deformation-modulus, stresses, and geology and laboratory physical properties. All data collected was to be integrated and evaluated using a finite-elements computer code. In addition, considerable professional "cross pollenization" was anticipated from the association of University and SMRC personnel. Scope of Investigation Before a ground supporting system can be evaluated, the loading conditions existing in the region of investigation, strength, deformation characteristics, as well as other engineering properties of the rock structure immediately surrounding the openings, together with the pertinent geological information, must be obtained and analyzed. It was for this reason the following items were included in this research project: (1) The selection of a suitable area for the investigation. (2) The mapping of the important geological features of the area of investigation. (3) The measurement of in-situ deformation of rock masses immediately surrounding an underground opening of the area of investigation. (4) The determination of ground stresses. High-resolution shallow seismic reflection methods are being used by the Bureau of Mines to map underground geologic features in coal mines. These features include faults, channel sand, washouts, rolls, and steep dips. The seismic method is proving useful for locating all of these at reasonable cost and with better definition than available with drill programs alone. This report provides a capsule description of the techniques and their application to mine planning.

The extraction and recovery of nitrate from waste solutions generated in the production of titanium were investigated using solvent extraction techniques. Laboratory studies and continuous tests in a small solvent-extraction system showed that up to 98 percent of the nitrate can be selectively extracted by a solution of tributyl phosphate in kerosine. The extracted nitrate can be recovered as nitric acid, at concentrations suitable for reuse, by stripping the loaded organic with water.

The mining law of Chosen, which was made effective April 1, 1916, was promulgated as ordinance 8, December 24, 1915, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 of law No. 30 of 1911. The new le repealed the mining law, Fo. 3 of 1906, and the placer mining law, No. of 1906, and in effect annulled all prior mining legislation. An amendment to the mining law of 1916 (by virtue of law No. 30 of 1911) vas. passed December 16, 1918, as ordinence o. 17. The detailed regulations, which were to supplement the law proper, and rich in all probability follow closely the regulations in force in the Empire, were not available. Unless otherwise indicated, references in this paper are to the mining law of 1916.

The vapor pressure of manganese in equilibrium with a series of liquid iron-manganese alloys was determined by the carrier gas method over a broad range of alloy composition. From these data the activities of manganese in the iron-manganese system were calculated. The system appears to be ideal.

This document reports on the design details of the sensor packages and the data processing program used in an experimental monitoring system. The natural gas-air burner described in this report was designed and constructed to meet the thermal requirements of a convective process for heating steel scrap. This process involved downward combustion of natural gas with air, blending the combustion products with diluent air, and then passing this tempered stream of gases downward through a porous bed of steel scrap contained in the furnace chamber. The scrap would be heated to a temperature limited by the adiabatic flame temperature of the gas stream in a period that depended on the rate at which heat was supplied per unit of bed cross section. The temperature of the gas stream would be limited to that beyond which an objectionable degree of oxidation would occur; for carbon steel this limit had been found to vary from 1,900° to 2,100° F. with the superficial velocity of the gas stream. The productivity of the process was dependent on the rate of heat input per unit of furnace cross section; for the 3-foot-diameter experimental furnace an input of 680,000 B.t.u. per hour was desired. The burner described was designed to meet these conditions of temperature and heat input. It provided for three streams of entering gases: (1) A primary air-fuel mixture too rich to be combustible, that is, above the upper flammable limit; (2) secondary air for combustion of the primary mixture; and (3) tertiary air, principally for cooling the combustion products to the temperatures desired for process operation. Downward combustion of the primary and secondary streams occurred in a flame stabilized on an annular port, while tertiary air flowed in an annular path surrounding the port and also through an axial channel whose wall formed the inner ring of the annular port. This burner performed beyond the designed heat-input rates while producing stable flames, which were adjusted readily to the temperatures desired. Gas-stream temperatures were easily controlled to within 15° F. of the desired value by simple manual adjustment of the flow valves.

This Bureau of Mines study, part of a broad program of research in air pollution related to minerals, was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the poisoning of catalysts when used to remove certain air pollutants from exhaust gases. The poisoning examined in this investigation occurs when leaded gasoline is used as a fuel for automotive engines. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Service. The smog in the Los Angeles area is attributed to the effect of radiant energy on the mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides found in the atmosphere there. A large portion of the hydrocarbons is believed to originate in the exhaust gases of automobiles. To prevent the escape of these hydrocarbons into the atmosphere catalytic mufflers have been proposed. In principle, these are simple and nonmechanical, consisting of a vessel charged with a catalyst capable of destroying the exhaust hydrocarbons by catalyzing their oxidation. However, these catalysts are severely affected by the particulate matter, mainly in the form of lead sulfate (PbS04), lead oxysulfate (PbS04.Pb0), and Lead chlorobromide (Pb(Cl,Br)2), contained in the exhaust gas. Deposition of lead on the catalyst as PbS04, PbS04, PbS0, and Pb(Cl,Br)2 restricts catalytic activity. As a result,after 20,000 miles of operation the temperature necessary to achieve 50-percent conversion of isopentane in a mixture of 0.2 percent isopentane, 2 percent carbon monoxide and 4 percent oxygen, and the balance nitrogen at 10,000 hourly space velocity has risen from 400° C. to 500° C. even with a catalyst taken from the exit portion of the catalyst bed. The rest of the catalyst was more severely affected. Therefore, it would appear that operation for 20,000 miles is near the limit for a catalyst.

"During the calendar year 1925 the Bureau of Mines received from the operators of several hundred mines and quarries complete accident records covering deaths, permanent disabilities, and “lost time” temporary injuries. Some of the companies, - those that participated in the National Safety Competition-also furnished information showing the number of man-hours of work performed during the year. With these two types of information it was possible to calculate the accident-frequency and accident-severity rates of the different plants. Complete and comparable reports of accidents and Man-hours of “exposure” were received from 34 underground metal mines, 59 underground coal mines, 15 underground mines producing other nonmetallic minerals, and 102 open quarries or open-pit mines. The figures in the table appended to this report show the accident severity rates and other data for each of the 34 underground metal mines and for the group as a whole. It is proposed to publish similar figures for the other classes of mines and quarries at an early date.The 34 metal mines listed in the table are situated in Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota., and Utah; they employed 5, 925 men, an average of 174 men per mine, including employees above-ground as well as underground. With but few exceptions, 50 men was the minimum number of employees in any mine. The total period of employment or “exposure” at the 34 mines was 14,612,607 man-hours, an average of 2,466 hours per man, or the equivalent of 308 work-days of eight hours for each employee. Accidents resulted in 15 fatalities, 9 permanent disabilities, and 1,950 temporary “lost time” injuries (causing disability exceeding remainder of shift). The fatal and nonfatal injuries represented 132,575 days of disability. Thus the accident frequency rate for the group was 135 accidents per million hours and the accident severity rate was 9.073 days lost per thousand hours of 1 “exposure”. The severity rates ranged from 0.227 to 88.653, while the ·range of the accident-frequency rates was from 16. 6 to 307 .4. In compiling the accident severity rates shown in the table, all accidents caused by explosives were weighted at twice the number of days actually lost, as one of the purposes of the National Safety Competition was to stress the prevention of accidents caused by explosives."

A program of research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to investigate anomalies in electrical-discharge behavior during consumable-electrode arc melting of titanium and to study the effects of these irregularities on arc-furnace explosions. A major effort was devoted to an experimental survey of arc behavior and a qualitative definition of discharge phenomena.3/ An important conclusion was that the "glow" of industrial arc-melting terminology is not a glow discharge but a skittering arc in a displaced position. The conditions that permit displaced skittering were tentatively defined. The displaced skittering arcs tended to damage melting crucibles in two ways, and details of possible mechanisms leading to crucible rupture and explosive reactions have been proposed accordingly. However, no acceptable means of preventing crucible damage was discovered.

The Table Mountain copper deposit is in an isolated portion of north-eastern Churchill County, Nev. Although copper-bearing outcrops have been known to exist in the area since 1909, no copper ore has been mined. Development of the property has been hampered by poor roads and rugged topography. Until 1941, the last 4 or 5 miles to the property had to be traveled either by foot or pack animal. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was started at the Table Mountain deposit. The Bureau began its field work on July 29, 1947, and completed it on October 18, 1948. Thirteen holes aggregating 2,711 linear feet, were drilled; samples were analyzed - 509 from cores and 143 from sludges. This report contains a brief history of the district and a description of the geology, deposits, and drilling done by the Bureau.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

Although the technique of diamond drilling was developed nearly 80 years ago, the use of this process as an aid to mining and other fields of engineering has increased greatly during the last decade , primarily as a result of the development of the cast -set bit , which now largely replaces the hand - set types , and of the use of bort instead of carbons . Since this transition to cast - set bits and bort diamond , many papers ( 1-14 ) have been written on the application of diamond drilling to various engineering problems . These papers contain , besides specification of the problems , some information on the labor and bit costs and a few data on drilling technique . These data , however , are subject to restricted interpretation owing to the large number of variables , which are not controlled in field drilling . Only one paper has come to the attention of the authors , namely , that by Sundberg and Lindqvist ( 16) , which reported a study of diamond drilling under controlled conditions . This paper was written early in the transition period, and the data and conclusions presented therein have had , without a doubt, considerable influence on the development of presentday diamond bits and In view of the fact that during the last 10 years thrilling procedure . have been new developments in diamond bits. and new applications of diamond drilling , a general program of research has been inaugurated to study the problems resulting from these changes .

The purpose of this study is to develop designs to facilitate and accelerate auger rotation stoppage (and auger rotation start up so as to promote auger disengagement during auger miner repositioning) and to provide a time delay and warning signal prior to auger start up to permit any miner s near the augers to get away from the augers before they start rotating. In the underground coal mines in the U.S., there are four auger miners that are currently in use. They are the Jeffrey 100L (see Figure 1-1) and 100M (see Figure 1-2), and the Wilcox WCM and the MK20A (see Figure 1-3).

A bench-scale expansion tester using 71 grams of coal was developed to determine the practicability of an apparatus of this size to investigate the effect of variables such as oxidation, blending, bulk density, inerts, size consist, petrographic differences, and rate of heating on the expanding properties of coal. The value of this tester is shown by the correlation that exists between its results and those of the larger scale sole-heated oven expansion apparatus used in commercial plants. From tests on 32 coals the standard error of estimate for predicting sole-oven results from bench-scale results is ± 5.3 percentage points. A standard deviation of the difference between pairs of tests in the latter apparatus of ± 2.1 percentage points was determined for 31 samples. In the sole-heated oven test the expansion of a coal at constant pressure is directly proportional to the dry coal bulk density. Tests in the bench-scale tester show a similar relationship between expansion and bulk density. When the blending ratios of high-and low-volatile coals are varied, similar changes in expansion are observed in both the sole-heated oven and the bench-scale tester. Therefore, the effect of other variables on expansion should be similar in the latter apparatus.

This report reviews and summarizes information on prevention and suppression of dust in mining, tunneling, and quarrying published in the United States during the years 1958 through 1960. Unpublished pertinent data developed or assembled by the Bureau of Mines during this period also are included. Silicosis statistics reported by the U.S. Public Health Service indicate a sizable silicotic population in the United States and suggest a need for greater dust-control effort. A joint medical-environmental survey was begun by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the magnitude of the silicosis problem in the metal mining industry in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a procedure for extracting copper from low-grade discarded mill tailings. A solid extractant consisting of an organic solvent extraction reagent adsorbed on granular activated carbon was investigated and proved to be satisfactory for extracting copper directly from leach pulps. When this material was used in a cyclic leaching, stripping, and electrowinning pro-cess, 95 pct of the acid-soluble copper was recovered from oxidized mill tailings. The weathered tailings contained 0.24 pct Cu (total) and 0.20 pct acid-soluble Cu. The copper was recovered as cathodes containing, in parts per million, 1.6 Pb, 3.6 Fe, 0.5 Sb, 1.5 AI, 1.9 Mn, and <1 Mg.
