"With the trend towards bringing into production ore bodies of lower and lower copper content every possible avenue of approach to achieve maximum copper metal recovery and keep milling costs to a minimum are of increasing importance.Equipment manufacturers have contributed a great deal by designing larger mills, flotation machines, pumps, etc. in lowering capital and operating costs; instrumentation and automation usually as a joint effort of operating staffs and equipment manufacturers have resulted in lower operating costs and improved metallurgy. Likewise manufacturers of chemicals used in mineral beneficiation have directed their research and development at new flotation reagents and treatment schemes to complement the needs for more efficient products, permitting coarser grinds without detriment to recovery, higher flotation rates, higher degrees of selectivity, as well as chemicals to improve settling, clarification and filtration. The various treatment schemes in use and suggested for consideration are:1) The choice of the flotation treatment scheme is largely dictated by the desire to operate a simple circuit, originally consisting of rougher and scavenger flotation, with scavenger concentrate either returning to the head of the rougher circuit or joining the rougher concentrate for cleaning by reflotation, with and without prior regrinding. The cleaner tailing was also recycled to the head of the rougher circuit. In the case of porphyry copper ores, this was originally the standard circuit. Lime is the preferred alkalinity regulator to adjust pH, usually in the range 10-12.To avoid the undesirable effects of circulating loads and gain the advantage of simplified control of the rougher circuit, open circuit cleaning is practiced more and more. In this scheme, cleaner tailing is scavenged to produce a discardable tailing and the scavenger concentrate returned either to the cleaner or the regrind circuit."

"Pulp-froth interface position is a key variable in column operation. In plant practice, it is commonly estimated through a system of three pressure-transducers which allows the calculation of the pulp height. An alternate method based on the measurement of the conductivity profile across the interface has been proposed and successfully tested. Both methods however, present some practical problems related to the assumptions made in the calculation of the pulp height in the former case, and to the response time and the precision of the reading in the latter case.In this paper, the use of the neural network technique for improving the estimation of the pulp-froth interface in flotation columns is discussed. The technique is used with both conductivity-based and three pressure-transducer methods. Results obtained in a 2"" laboratory column and a 12"" pilot scale column are presented. A major obstacle in applying this approach in practise is the training of the artificial neural network. This problem is analyzed here for the conductivity-based method and some solutions are proposed."

Air quality in underground mining operations can fluctuate significantly during the working day, but until recently the only way to ensure a mine had sufficient air quality was to over-ventilate and, with significant delay in adjusting the volume or direction of the airflow, working conditions were tolerable but rarely ideal. Underground ventilation management systems have been considered to achieve improved energy efficiency since at least 1995 in Canada. However, Mine Ventilation Optimization, (MVO) and integrating it with Ventilation on Demand (VOD) is only becoming more of a reality in the last seven (7) years. A systems approach to MVO takes into account all the elements from the point the power is distributed into the ventilation fans through to the actual quality and quantity of fresh air to the working face. Opportunities exist throughout the system for energy savings but not all of them are cost-effective. Depending on the application, these opportunities can be easily realized by properly sizing, streamlining, maintaining and operating the ventilation system using premium mine proven energy efficient components throughout. Implementation of VOD is a key step in achieving the MVO objective. However, VOD is a concept, and it requires various tools, procedures, and strategies for cost-effective and operationally viable implementations. This paper provides a historical background in the development of VOD and provides a framework for proper and cost effective implementation. In addition, an optimized ventilation system will also allow increased airflow by reducing resistances and shock losses. This turn in would allow production target improvement, which could be an attractive objective compared to energy savings. Mine ventilation is the life support system of an underground mine, and contributes to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility goals assuring health and safety aspects of strategic planning. The proposed framework addresses implementing mine ventilation optimization integrating ventilation on demand as a vehicle for energy, health and safety improvement and overall productivity gains in the mining cycle efficiency while significantly reducing carbon footprint of a mine.

Highland Valley Copper is a large, open-pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Reclamation has been in progress on the site since 1987. Some 6,300 hectares will have been disturbed at the end of the mine?s life, the majority of which will eventually be reclaimed. The establishment of vegetation and the development of a self-sustaining vegetative cover are the central components of the mine?s reclamation plan. The present vegetation-monitoring program for the reclaimed area represents a significant commitment of resources and only addresses a small portion of the site each year. In an effort to expand the area surveyed while improving the efficiency of the monitoring, the use of remote sensing is being investigated. Airborne multispectral imagery was acquired in the summer of 2001, and the results of the multispectral classification were compared to ground observations made during the routine 2000 and 2001 monitoring program. A thematic map with 17 vegetation classes was produced. Within the vegetation classes, there was a strong spectral separation between ? dry grasses? and ?legumes? with further separation according to their density. Green biomass could also be quantified remotely across a wide variety of vegetation types. During summer 2002, further aerial imagery was acquired in combination with a targeted ground-truthing program to determine characteristic vegetation types associated with recognized spectral signatures, which can be used in a supervised classification. It is anticipated that after some fine-tuning, it will be possible to shift the ground-sampling effort from areas where the aerial classification confidence is high to more complex areas.

"The utility of high-density stream sediment and stream water sampling to the exploration for silver deposits was investigated by the study of the epithermal Ag-Au base-metal prospect at Lagalochan in western Scotland. The geology of Lagalochan is dominated by a calc-alkaline Caledonian intrusive complex emplaced into Dalradian Supergroup rocks (Harris et al., 1988a). The complex consists of subvolcanic porphyrytic rocks associated with intense hydrothermal alteration and brecciation. Early Cu-Ag-Mo-rich mineralization is found in the core of the complex with later Pb-Zn-Ag-Au-As-Sb-rich mineralization toward the margins (op. cit.).Stream sediment sample analysis spatially resolved the Cu-rich and Ag-rich mineralization. Ag and Cu anomalies relative to local background values were found in all size fractions analyzed (-125µm, +125 µm, +180 µm, +250 µm) but the more pronounced anomalies were found in the -125 µm fraction. The coarser fractions generally revealed more erratic but longer dispersion trails. The separation of Cu-rich and Ag-rich mineralization is also apparent in the distribution of relatively high dissolved Cu and Ag in stream waters, particular when expressed relative to the solute load as Cu/TDS and Ag/TDS.The mineralization at Lagalochan is indicated by Ag, Cu and Pb stream sediment and water concentrations that are anomalous with respect to local backgrounds, but are difficult to distinguish from regional backgrounds. This emphasizes the further potential of high-density stream water sampling,in particular, as a viable geochemical exploration tool on a sub-regional scale for epithermal depositsin relatively unpolluted upland terranes."

"The Jinfeng gold mine is one of the three gold mines that Eldorado Gold has in China and it is the second largest gold mine in China. The mine is located in a relatively remote and mountainous area in the southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is similar to the Carlin type deposit in Nevada. The mill throughput was designed to treat 3,600 tones per day. The ore comes from open pit mining and underground mining, and is fed to one-stage jaw crushing. The crushed ore is stockpiled, reclaimed and then fed to the SABC grinding circuit. After classification with hydrocylones, the ore is floated, and the resultant concentrate is oxidized biologically in a process known as BIOX®. The oxidized concentrate is then washed in a CCD circuit and finally leached with cyanide in a CIL circuit for gold extraction. Jinfeng produces about 180,000 oz of gold per year.This paper introduces operations and modifications of SABC circuit over the past three years, and then describes some technical characteristic of the SAG mill and other circuits in the processing plant.Major modifications and improvements on the SABC circuit are described in the paper, including:1. Impacts of grinding ball and mill liner with respect to material selection, quality, hardness, manufacturing methods, and interactions between mill liner and grinding ball.2. Effect of milling operation parameters on milling efficiency.3. Impacts of SAG mill scats and modifications of grate size to improve mill throughput.4. Design and construction of a pebble crushing system, and recycle the crushed scats to the SAG mill to improve mill throughput.With the above-mentioned modifications, 20% increase over the design in mill throughput has been realized over the past three years, and operating cost has been significantly reduced. However, some issues still remain, and thus process modifications and technical innovations are still needed."

Mill liners serve the dual purpose of protecting the shell from wear and transferring the rotary motion of the mill to an effective grinding action. As the liners wear, the efficiency of energy transfer changes, so there is balance between liner profile for wear and for milling efficiency. A tool that can simultaneously predict the evolution of the liner profile and the associated change in milling efficiency should prove most useful in optimal liner design. This paper presents such an approach, based on measured 3D liner profile data informing 3D DEM simulations of charge motion and liner wear modelling.

There are currently two operators producing oil from the surface-mineable portions of Alberta?s oil sands (Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Suncor Inc.) and two other companies are proposing to enter the industry (Albian Sands in 2002 and True North in 2004). Tailings from the two current oil sands plants contain approximately 220 000 tonnes per year of recoverable TiO2 and approximately 80 000 tonnes per year of recoverable zircon. This represents approximately 6% of the world?s TiO 2 consumption and approximately 9% of the world?s zircon production. With the commissioning of plants by Albian Sands and True North, and the announced expansion of plants by Syncrude and Suncor, it is expected that these tonnages could quadruple in the next ten years. All of these operators have at least 50 years of reserves even at these expanded production rates. The occurrence of heavy minerals in Alberta?s oil sands has long been known and is well documented in the literature. There have been a number of attempts to produce market-grade products from this resource and the results of this work have been quite mixed. Typically, researchers have used the normal mineral dressing techniques of the industry and have found the mineral assemblage does not respond to these techniques all that well. This has led to the widelyheld suspicion that there must be some difficult metallurgical problems associated with this resource. There are three main problem areas that have created difficulties for previous researchers: 1) The bitumen coating on the sand grains; 2) Secondary mineralization such as pyrite, siderite and calcite 3) A high proportion of aluminosilicates (approximately 25%) that have the same gravity, electrostatic and magnetic properties as other minerals in the heavy mineral suite. Recent work by Lakefield Research shows that these problems can be largely overcome with some novel approaches. The bitumen can be removed by washing with a solvent in the presence of a demulsifier. The pyrite can be removed by flotation. And the titanium and zircon minerals can be separated by selective flotation followed by conventional electrostatic and magnetic separation.

Located North of Williams Lake British Columbia, Gibraltar Mine is the fourth largest open pit Copper mine in North America. Gibraltar commenced Copper concentrate production in 1972 with a mill throughput rate of 30,000 tons per day. A series of expansion projects, including installation of a second SAG mill with variable speed drives in 2013, has increased mill throughput to 85,000 tons per day. Over the past 24 months, Gibraltar Mine in partnership with Spartan Controls has executed several advanced process control programming projects culminating in the implementation of a Continuous Speed Controller (CSC) for the most recently installed SAG mill. This paper covers development and results for the SAG mill speed controller. INTRODUCTION In January 2016, the price of Copper fell below $2.00 USD per pound, the lowest price in 7 years. Gibraltar Mine faced a significant challenge; how to maximize profit in an environment where capital spending was not an option. An opportunity was quickly identified to improve performance through increased automation and advanced control of the grinding processes. Beginning in March 2016, Gibraltar Mine partnered with Spartan Controls to introduce Advanced Process Control (APC) to the grinding circuits. The collaboration between metallurgical and process control engineering disciplines proved to be effective for achieving gains in throughput, reliability and productivity for the mill process. The Gibraltar milling facilities include 2 grinding-flotation plants for concentration of chalcopyrite ore with throughput rates of 58,000 tons per day (Concentrator 1) and 38,000 tons per day (Concentrator 2). Each of the two concentrators has a 34’ diameter SAG mill powered by 2 GE 4800 kW synchronous electric motors. For SAG 1 (in concentrator 1), power is transmitted through 2 Eaton Airflex clutches. For SAG 2 (in concentrator 2), the motors are driven by 2 TMEIC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). All programming is done using DeltaV, which Gibraltar uses as its Distributed Control System (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

The efficiency of water use is a top priority for the global minerals industry, especially in regions with limited freshwater supplies. In these areas, the freshwater shortage has prompted mining companies to search for alternatives to freshwater sources. Seawater has been proven to be a potential water source for mineral beneficiation and metal extraction processes. This study compares chalcocite leaching behavior with ferric chloride to that with cupric chloride. We carried out leaching tests with a highly pure chalcocite sample in jacketed reactors under fully controlled pH and solution potential. The effect of chloride concentration, oxidant concentration, and temperature on copper extraction was quantified in both cupric and ferric chloride systems. In the ferric chloride system, increasing ferric concentration showed a positive effect on the first stage of chalcocite leaching. In the second stage, increasing temperature markedly enhanced copper extraction. In the cupric chloride system, chloride concentration presented a considerable effect on both the first and second stages of leaching, while temperature had a remarkable effect only on the second stage. The findings of this study would be beneficial to mine operations aiming to replace fresh water with seawater for heap leaching of chalcocite. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing operations/plants are normally operated adjacent to mines which are often located in remote and arid area, such as northern Chile, southern Peru and Australia with limited access to fresh water (Liu, Moran, & Vink, 2011, 2013). Water scarcity in these areas has prompted mining companies to invest in sustainable technologies to reduce the water use and/or increase the water use efficiency. One of the current sustainable approaches in mineral processing operations is to replace fresh water with seawater. Seawater is now being increasingly used for mineral beneficiation and metal extraction processes (Hernández et al., 2015). Another application of seawater could be for heap leaching of copper secondary sulfides, mainly chalcocite. However, the high concentration of chloride ion in seawater may significantly affect leaching kinetics of copper sulfide concentrates and ores (Watling et al., 2014). Therefore, it is essential to develop a fundamental understanding of the leaching of chalcocite in chloride media.

Numerous rock blasting design methodologies have been developed over the years, relating either to the primary objectives of blasting, such as the size distribution of the blasted material, or to its undesirable side effects, such as damage to the remaining rock mass. All existing methodologies, while of use, do have serious shortcomings. The question remains whether further improvements can be achieved in the field of practical rock blasting engineering. One approach that seems to hold promise is the relatively new matrix-based rock engineering systems (RES) methodology. It has been conceptually demonstrated that RES could be efficiently adapted to blasting. A brief overview of rock blasting design techniques and their main shortcomings is followed by the basic concepts governing rock engineering systems and a discussion on their pertinence to blasting. The paper concludes with a review of current efforts to develop a useful practical blast design tool using RES. SOMMAIRE Le potentiel d?application des systèmes d?ingénierie du roc aux tirs à l?explosif. De nombreuses méthodologies de conception d?abattage du roc à l?explosif ont été développées au cours des années, qui ont adressé soit les principaux objectifs des tirs, comme par exemple la granulométrie du matériel dynamité, soit ses effets secondaires indésirables, tels les dommages au massif rocheux. Toutes les méthodes existantes fonctionnent dans une certaine mesure et sont utiles - elles sont cependant pour ainsi dire toutes affectées par des limitations ou défauts plus ou moins sévères. La question demeure quant à savoir si des améliorations supplémentaires peuvent être apportées dans le domaine de la conception pratique des opérations d?abattage du roc à l?explosif. Une approche alternative qui semble prometteuse est celle relativement récente des systèmes matriciels d?ingénierie du roc (?Rock Engineering Systems?, ou RES). Il a été démontré de manière conceptuelle que les RES ont le potentiel d?être adaptés aux opérations de sautage. Une brêve revue des principales techniques de conception des tirs à l?explosif est suivie d?un énoncé des principes de base gouvernant les RES, ainsi que d?une discussion sur leur pertinence aux opérations de tir. "Abstract - Prior to the development of the Diavik Diamonds Project, baseline studies were conducted to determine the geochemical characteristics of four kimberlite orebodies as an aid in the design of both the water-management system and the facilities for containment of processed kimberlite and ore stockpiles. Materials tested included field samples of volcaniclastic and pyroclastic kimberlite, processed kimberlite (i.e., kimberlite ore which had been screened and washed as part of the processing procedure), and sedimentary mudstone (a minor xenolithic unit which was assimilated during kimberlite emplacement). Approximately 200 samples of kimberlite materials were collected as part of the geochemistry program. Test-work included whole-rock chemical analyses, acidbase accounting, kinetic leach tests using columns, and mineralogical analyses. Diavik kimberlite has major oxide and trace-element concentrations consistent with global averages for kimberlite. The mean total-sulfur content of the kimberlite material is 0.22 wt% S, but with a significant range. The kimberlite has an excess of carbonate minerals over sulfide minerals (average CO2 = 4 wt%, present mainly as calcite), and has a mean neutralization potential of 311 kg CaCO3 equivalent/tonne. A reactive form of framboidal pyrite associated specifically with the mudstone xenoliths is the primary source of sulfide-sulfur. Long-term kinetic tests confirmed the preliminary interpretations that were made from the static-test results. Kimberlite and processed kimberlite are net acid-consuming materials that produce alkaline drainages and have low but detectable leaching rates for SO4 and specific trace metals such as Al, Co, Cu, Ni, and Zn. If segregated from the kimberlite, mudstone xenoliths are acid-generating (pH = 3) and produce an effluent with elevated concentrations of SO4, Fe, Al, Cu, Ni, and Zn. The study demonstrates that xenolithic units in Diavik kimberlites have an important effect on the environmental geochemistry of the ore rock. The mineralogy and aqueous geochemistry of the kimberlite materials are such that they may not be suitable for general earthworks or as an alkaline agent and should report to an engineered facility to protect site water quality."

There are several hydrometallurgical alternative processing options under development for high enargite and arsenic containing copper concentrates ranging from biological, atmospheric, medium temperature oxidation to total oxidative leaching. The most developed of these options is the CESL process boasting pilot campaigns totaling more than 8760 hours of fully integrated continuous operation, as well as, over two thousand batch scale oxidation tests performed on dozens of concentrates for flowsheet development. This paper reports the observed deportment of arsenic under varying arsenic, iron and acid oxidation conditions; it also describes the impact of iron to arsenic ratios and residue recycle on overall arsenic behavior and its stability in residue. INTRODUCTION The CESL Hydrometallurgical Process (CESL) was originally developed to compete with smelting of clean chalcopyrite concentrates. High Treatment Charges and Refining Charges (TC/RCs) combined with premiums on London Metal Exchange (LME) grade copper from onsite refining made treatment of copper concentrates using CESL a viable option at the time. As world demand for copper increased and a subsidized Chinese refining market developed, smelting contracts became more favourable for the miner and focus was placed on modifying the CESL Hydrometallurgical Process to handle concentrates with elevated deleterious elements. Dozens of pilot campaigns processing concentrates containing elevated concentrations of uranium, fluoride, mercury and nickel all led to further developments of the CESL Hydrometallurgical Process. In 2016 a United States patent was granted for a novel modification of the CESL Hydrometallurgical Process for recovery of copper from arsenic-bearing and/or antimony-bearing copper sulphide concentrates, Henry Salomon de Friedberg (2016). To date, over 2000 bench scale tests along with five fully integrated closed loop pilot campaigns, totaling over a year of online operation time, have been conducted processing arsenic bearing copper concentrates. This paper summarizes the observed behavior of arsenic under varying autoclave and process conditions.

Empirical and phenomenological models of SAG and AG mills have dominated the scene for the last few decades, being used nearly every time a mill is scale-up or an attempt is made to improve its performance. However, in spite of their success, these models fail to describe the details of both the grinding environment and the breakage mechanisms. The result is a generally good track record, with a few – but very important – instances when these models fall short in their predictions, which can be very costly. Further, nearly all of these models require detailed calibration to industrial and pilot plant data, being costly in their application, although still with limited predictive capabilities. Recognizing these challenges, a new model framework has been proposed which overcomes the limitations of currently used models by coupling the microscale population balance model, the discrete element model and functions that describe internal classification at the mill grate. This model framework has already been applied to describe breakage in ball mills, with showing very promising results. However, in the case of SAG and AG mills a much greater level of complexity is involved in the model, given the interaction between the mechanical environment that is formed totally or, in part, by the ore itself, and the breakage response in the mill. The paper describes the model framework, demonstrating how it can address appropriately effects such as mill speed, mill filling and size distribution, on the response from the mill. Some of the advantages of the model are related to its intrinsic multi-component and dynamic nature, which allows simulating appropriately mixtures of ores of different competences in a transient manner.

"IntroductionIn this paper it will not be possible to cover all details of the reagent systems at Brunswick Mining and Smelting but it is hoped that a description of the evolution of these systems will be of some benefit. The concentrator of Brunswick Mining and Smelting located near Bathurst, New Brunswick was originally designed as a 3,000 ton per day operation but before construction commenced was uprated, with 4,500 tons per day being treated by the summer of 1964. Development of the open pit at another ore body five miles away was initiated in 1965 and additional concentrator and crusher facilities went into operation in September, 1966. Present total daily throughput is over 8,000 tons per day. The ore at Brunswick is very high grade but mineralization is very fine grained and requires grinds generally over 75% minus 400 mesh for liberation. The amount of surface exposed using grinds of this order understandably requires great quantities of reagents, Reagent mixing systems for the original concentrator allowed only for batch mixing and were very expensive in labour cost especially.During the first three years of operation total number of men employed in reagent handling reached a peak of four men per shift and six men on dayshift unloading cars for a total of 22 men. At present only one man is employed on shift, and four men on dayshift take care of unloading and mixing reagents, a total of 8 men. The man on shift is almost entirely occupied with checking feeder operation, flow rates, and head tank levels. Most commonly used reagents are tabulated in Fig. 1 showing average monthly and daily requirements in the Brunswick operation as well as pounds per ton of mill feed as found in 1969. It is very obvious that with over seventeen tons each of lime and soda ash and six tons of copper sulphate used each day, opening of bags and mixing batches of solution is an inefficient undertaking."

The paper will outline the destructive test methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties of rope samples used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts, additional discard criteria used in Ontario, Quebec and South Africa shall be presented. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL can also be found in the current CSA G4-00 Standard, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage, published in November 2000. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4-00, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The CSA G4-00 Standard is also intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, and includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish. To-date the Ontario Mining Regulations require only that destructive test of new ropes be performed in accordance with CSA Standard G4-00, but does not require conformity to the Standard, and on the other hand the inservice wire ropes are required to be tested in accordance with CSA G4 and thus require conformity. The author recommends that the Ontario Mining Regulations (and regulations of other mining jurisdictions) be improved in order to ensure quality control in the manufacturing of wire ropes destined for mines in Ontario (and Canada). Also, the author recommends the revision of the CSA G4-00 Standard by the technical committee in order to address manufacturer?s concerns with respect to compliance, and harmonize the Standard with Internationally recognized Standards.

"Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized. These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. In this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dissolving huge cavities in the evaporites. The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds. In at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation.Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore wne, and drops in topography > 10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies. Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. "The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth's crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonicmagmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonicallycontrolled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian platform, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu mineralization. It does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."
