"Canadian process industry experts have often observed the strong trend for U.S. industrial safety and environmental laws to creep across the border. These experts will be interested in new United States (OSHA) regulations (29 CFR 1910.119), and anticipated new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that will require over 28 000 U.S. refineries and chemical plants employing more than three million workers, to begin a comprehensive Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) of these complex plants immediately. Impending EPA regulations are expected to expand these efforts and add process Hazard Frequency and process Hazard Consequence reviews for many additional industrial locations.These regulations were created to reduce catastrophic industrial accidents, and emergency releases of hazardous chemicals which endanger employees, the public, and the environment.Accurate, and field verified Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) are essential to permit a meaningful Process Hazard Analysis or emission release to be done. Today accurate P&IDs often do not exist. Many companies that have started to update their old P&IDs have found the process to be far more difficult, time-consuming,and expensive than they ever thought.This paper describes a new technique of computer drawn ""Intelligent"" P&IDs that can make a Process Hazard Analysis less expensive, more accurate, easier to perform, and provides lasting benefits to the plant owner long after the PHA has been completed."

"The largest Canadian Lamella thickener installation to date, with 13,600 square feet of effective clarification area, is being successfully operated at the Rocanville Division of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. This paper describes the operational principles and design features of the Lamella thickener, the testwork leading to its specification f or the Rocanville phase two expansion project and a review of the performance of the full- size unit which was ultimately installed.IntroductionThickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated an d he a ted structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to en sure good flotation circuit performance Because these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin-type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 46 metres in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a LamellaTM thickener and one other type of ‘High Rate' thickener as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project.This paper describes the operational principles and design features o f the Lamella thickener (manufactured by Axel Johnson lnc.), the testwork leading to the specification of a Lamella for the Rocanville expansion project and are view of the performance of the full size unit (1486 m2 of the effective settling area) which was ultimately installed and is now successfully operating in the Rocanville plant."

"The Kiruna Electric System is an all electric ramp haulage system developed for underground mining. This electric truck haulage system is currently operating on three continents. This paper will review the technology of the system, existing installations as well as the economical benefits to the mining industry. The system was designed and developed to extend and exploit the economical advantages of ramp haulage. Performance information is provided. IntroductionThe Kiruna Electric System has been the subject of a number of technical papers over the past sever al years. "Av. Bases de Manresa 61-63, Manresa (08242) Barcelona, SpainTantalum is a strategic metal and an improvement of the mineral processing is an important issue. The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). "Parameters f or design and development of an emergency hoist system (Fig. I) were submitted to Timberland Equipment Limited of Woodstock, Ontario by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited.The unit is the first of its kind in Canada. Not only does it comply with the province of Saskatchewan's mining regulations, but has the added advantage of being completely mobile and self-contained.As well as being useful in the mining industry, the mobile hoist unit could be used in other emergency situations such as rescuing people trapped in wells.JustificationRevisions to the Mines Regulations under Section 13 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1977, of the Province of Saskatchewan stipulate as follows:"" Section 410 .04(4) The Mine Employer shall make adequate provision at every mine where any worker is hoisted in a shaft not equipped with a manway to enable an y such worker trapped in a conveyance in the shaft to be rescued . "" It was not possible to equip the shafts at PCS Mining' s Divisions with "" manways"" and therefore an alternative was required.BackgroundThe Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, a subsidiary of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, operates four potash mines. Of these, three, Cory, Rocanville and Lanigan Divisions are wholly owned while the fourth, Allan Division, is 40% owned by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., but managed by PCS Mining. The four underground operations all have a service and production shaft.From 1979 to 1981 the PCS Mining Division, along with Central Canada Potash, were developing an idea to use the existing ground-mounted timberland hoist at Lanigan as an emergency hoist. This hoist was used in the past for rope-up work at both Rocanville and Lanigan and other potash mine s. The Department of Labour at this time had concerns about the time it would take to load, t ran sport and re-install the hoist on a foundation when needed for an emergency. Weight and size made this particular unit very cumbersome for transporting.In addition, the speed at which this hoist operates is too slow for rescue work. When the Department of Labour expressed concern that this unit would be unsuitable for these rea sons, a search for a suitable unit was initiated.The project responsibility for procuring an emergency hoist for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited was assigned to the author, a shaft/ hoist specialist a t PCS Mining."

"Air spaces and air gaps in an explosives column are known to allow greater distribution and cushioning of explosive energy from the rock mass. This energy distribution is enhanced if the explosives ' gases can be confined in the borehole for as long as possible by plugging and stemming above the air space.Power Plug is an inflatable plug which can seal a borehole at any point to separate the stemming from an air gap and explosive toe load.IntroductionThis paper will discussion-going work by C-I -L Inc. and operators of two open pit mines to study the results of using Power Plugs:I. Pit wall stability - the authors have found the Power Plug effective for wall control blasting in open pit mines.2. Selective mining of coal seams - the authors work shows the Power Plug allows mining selective coal seams by predrilling underseam waste wedges.Pit Wall StabilityWall stability in an open pit mine is essential for safety. Good wall stability can be achieved with wall control blasting techniques which cushion the effect s of the explosives charge by decoupling the charges from the borehole wall. The usual method of decoupling a charge in a large-diameter rotary borehole is to load the explosives in tubes (Fig .I) . We now believe the air deck system is effective in sea ling a borehole above the explosive charge to create an air deck within the borehole which will cushion the blast.In a linear decoupled charge, an air annulus surrounds the explosives charge and cushions the effects of detonation genera ted gases on the pit wall. In an air deck, i.e. with the hole plugged at the collar, the gases genera ted by an explosive toe load are sealed in the empty borehole column. After a period of time, these trapped gases produce radial cracking between holes along the entire length of the borehole.It is common practice to employ de coupled explosive charge columns in the borehole to limit blast damage to surrounding rock. The exact mechanism of energy transfer in such blasts, however, is not well understood. Interruption of the continuous explosive column in a borehole by means of stemming, or air decks, may also be viewed as another form of decoupled blast. Decoupling of the explosive charge from the borehole wall affects both explosive energy release and explosion pressure developed in the borehole."

"The Noranda Continuous Smelting Process at the Home smelter was commissioned in March 1973. The ability of the process to handle a wide variety of feed materials and a steady stream of technical innovations in recent decades has served to maintain the Home as an efficient and versatile custom smelter. This paper reviews recent technological development and capabilities in areas such as sampling and preparation of secondary and complex materials, as well as the smelting and related environmental control issues. Future trends and improvements are also addressed.IntroductionThe Noranda Home smelter commenced operations in 1927. It was originally designed to treat 910 tonnes per day of copper concentrates and ores coming from the new Home mine site. In the 19305, the company opened its doors to other mines in northwestern Quebec. Treatment of feed materials on a custom basis has, therefore, always been an important factor in the operation of the Home smelter. Throughout the years, the Home gradually increased its custom smelting capacity, while maintaining its production from the Home mine. By the early 1950s, 65% of the materials processed was from outside customers, and by 1974, this figure had increased to more than 85% . With the closure of the Home mine in 1976, the company extended its smelting operations beyond ore and concentrate, and began to treat more scrap metals and residues rich in copper and precious metal content.Corresponding with the ever-changing pattern of feed sources, the Home smelter has adopted technological improvements to meet new and challenging business conditions. The technology of the original smelter of 1927has been completely replaced over the years in the quest for improvement. One of these major changes occurred in 1973 with the start-up of the Noranda Process Reactor. This extremely efficient smelting system has been exploited to treat a wide variety of copper and precious metal (PM) containing custom materials. This paper reviews recent developments and improvements achieved at the Home smelter, in the receiving, sampling and treatments of copper and PM scrap and secondaries, with particular emphasis on the development of new technology and equipment in complex feed materials treatment."

"This paper discusses the benefits of industrial minerals, their sources of supply, price and marketing trends, and their increasing use as substitute materials and ""strategic"" minerals. IntroductionKaolin finds have yet to spark the kind of frenzy associated with the 1849 California gold rush; no dolomite deposit has ever gained the notoriety of the Comstock Lode; and few industrial minerals are counted among the currently fashionable list of "" strategic mineral s"". Nevertheless, the glamorous zhine associated with metals may be somewhat superficial; further digging provides perhaps the real foundation of modern society - industrial minerals.They are often tagged as common, everyday materials that are simply dug out of the ground, crushed and hauled to a local point of consumption. Although this description is accurate in the case of road aggregates, sand and gravel, and the like, there are many exceptions to this rule. The term industrial minerals is rather nebulous, covering as it does the mundane and esoteric, the chemically active and the refractory, the $2 and the $10m-a-ton product. All of these minerals influence every facet of modern life from fertilizers to fire retardants, ceramics to cars, construction to clothes, and toothpaste to tennis courts. Their usefulness is well illustrated by the variety of industries they serve; the main ones are listed in Table 1. It is now time to dismiss the notion of non-metallics as the ""third world"" of natural resources business after the metallic and energy products by dispelling some of the myths regarding abundance, variety and value of the group's sixty-plus products."

THE Marmoraton mine is located a mile southeast of Marmora, a village in Hastings county, Ontario, 130 miles east from Toronto and 143 miles west of Ottawa. Highway No. 14 from Belleville intersects Highway No. 7 at Marmora and the branch line of the Canadian National railway between Trenton and Bancroft passes through the property just east of the open pit. HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The Marmora orebody appears as the whorls of a thumb print on the aeromagnetic survey map released by the Ontario Department of Min.es early in 1950, the survey of the district having been made in 1948 and 1949, under the joint auspices of the Department of Mines and the Geological Survey of Canada. The 'anomaly' appeared to have interesting possibilities, so Bethlehem representatives carried out a ground survey and began drilling the property in June, 1950. A total of 40 holes, aggregating 37,000 feet, were drilled to delineate the ore-body. The Marmora orebody is a re-placement of Precambrian limesto.ne with zones or bands of magnetite interlaid with metamorpl1ic rocks and cut by later intrusives. The ore and associated Precambrian rocks are overlain by 100 to 150 feet of flat-lying Palaeozoic limestone. It is a low-grade deposit averaging 33 per cent iron and requires concentration to raise it to 65 per cent iron grade.

"The Brunswick Mining concentrator processes 10,000 D.S. T. per day of a complex sulphide ore. Four separate concentrates- zinc, lead, copper and bulk-are produced by selective flotation. Several major changes have been made to the Brunswick flotation circuit to improve the process and control. This paper will describe the present flotation practices at the Brunswick Concentrator. Special emphasis is given to the conversion of two of the primary circuits to an SO2-aeration flowsheet, and to the addition of a new secondary zinc flotation circuit that produces a zinc concentrate from the plant tailings. IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation operates a zinclead- copper and silver mine and concentrator near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Since the start-up of operations in 1964, the flotation flowsheet has undergone major modifications to process the increased tonnages and to produce a greater number of concentrates. The flowsheet for the concentrator as it was in 1971 has been described by Neumann and Schnarru) and by Ersklneco. Since then, in 1971, the No.6 concentrator was converted from bulk flotation to selective flotation to produce a copper, lead and zinc concentrate. A separate zinc upgrading circuit was installed in 1972 and a bulk flotation or dezincing circuit, which reduced the zinc in the lead concentrate, was started in 1973. In 1976, the secondary zinc circuit was initiated.In addition to these new circuits, changes have been made to the existing circuits to simplify their operation."

"Under high pressure in a deep potash mine, the salt rock behaves in accordance with the concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance. The paper presents the evidence of this behaviour and engineering concepts f or room-and-pillar design. IntroductionThe mining and refining facilities at International Minerals &. Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited are located near Esterhaz y at the southeastern edge of the Saskatchewan evaporites. Ore extraction began in 1962 and at the present time the annual mining capacity is in excess of eleven million tons of potash ore.A generalized geological section is shown in Figure I. The mining horizon is overlay in by 100 feet of rock salt followed by a thin bed of competent dry shale. The strata in the next 1,500 feet are generally competent and locally water bearing. The Blairmore formation contains strata of water-bearing unconsolidated sand. Below the mining horizon, rock salt is interbedded with anhydrite bands.The 8-foot mining bed is distinguished mainly by grade and clay content, as there is no definite bed boundary. The chief mineral s are halite, sylvite and, in some cases, carnallite, with up to 2 per cent disseminated clay. The ore is coarse grained, with crystals averaging one-half to three-quarters inch across.The major mining problem is related to the fact that the Dawson Bay formation, overlying the evaporites, contains areas and channels that are highly porous and permeable and are filled with unsaturated brine under high pressure. Consequently, all mining areas, with no exception, must be so designed that the overburden salt stratum remain s competently supported for the duration of the mine .This paper outlines a successful engineering method of determining the stability of the pillar s and designing a stable room -and-pillar mining system."

"Respirable dust samples are collected by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and mine operators as part of the requirements of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. About 1.85 million respirable dust samples collected by MSHA were analyzed for the period 197/ to 1990 f or the states of Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. Trends in coal dust exposure of continuous miner operators, helpers, and roof bolters were analyzed. The reported production in each of the nine states was analyzed. The relationship between average dust exposure and coal production was evaluated. In addition, the differences between mine operator and MSHA inspector collected data were examined for each state. The average exposure levels for the three occupations - miner operator, miner helper, and roof bolter were also compared.The data indicate that the dust exposure levels have significantly dropped over the last twenty years, while at the same time production has increased, attesting to the ability of the U.S. mining industry to adapt successfully to the stringent dust control regulations. In terms of coal production, it appears that some states, such as Utah, Illinois, and Kentucky, were able to increase their production significantly relative to others, such as Pennsylvania and Virginia. The relationship between dust concentration and coal production is, at best, tenuous. 11 implies that existing dust control technology has assisted several mine operators to meet dust standards, while, at the same time, enabling mines to produce more coal than before. Comparison of data collected by MSHA and mine operators indicate that MSHA inspectors recorded higher dust levels and lower shift production relative to mine operators."

"Traditionally, batch bench-scale flotation tests have been used for evaluating flotation reagents by comparing the results of tests done with various additions of the reagent in question. Usually, comparisons are made of the concentrate grade and recovery or some figure of merit involving an empirical combination of both. In some cases, statistical methods have been used to make the comparison and even to identify optimal combinations of reagents.None of the preceding technology utilizes the fact that flotation separations can be described by relatively simple kinetic equations that will serve not only to quantitatively describe the influence of a reagent, but will also aid in designing an optimal separation procedure. Examples of the use of a first-order rate equation for evaluating the impact of a reagent addition and for optimizing the reagent addition are given.IntroductionThe classical method of evaluating flotation reagents is to conduct batch bench-scale tests while varying one factor at a time. Some of the shortcomings of this technique have been pointed out and statistical design and evaluation of experiments has been advocated. Although the statistical approach is superior to the one-at-a-time method, it still is dependent on the results of a batch test conducted for a specific duration.That flotation is primarily a rate process than can be described by a first-order rate equation has been recognized for a long time, but the application of this knowledge to the evaluation of reagents has received little attention. In this work, it is demonstrated how the parameters of the first-order rate equation can be utilized to evaluate the influence of reagents on flotation."

"Recent engineering advances in open pit rock mechanics have resulted in improved pit wall slope design and improved operating procedures in the event of a major wall instability. At the other end of the spectrum, on the scale of single bench failures, considerable discretion is left to the mine operators as to how potential problems are handled. The usual alternatives are either to operate with caution beneath potential hazards, or try to bring the unstable rock down. In specific cases it may be advantageous to attempt to stabilize rock structures for reasons of access and operating safety.A t the Brenda Mines open pit a prominent structure on the north wall had caused recurring bench-scale wedge failures when exposed on each mining level. In spite of operating precautions a shovel was hit by a rockfall causing significant damage. The first section of this paper describes the investigative, design, and stabilization methods which permitted subsequent mining beneath the structure to proceed without incident. Emphasis is placed on the personnel and equipment resources available at the mine site which were used to minimize costs and which would be available at most operating mines.The second section describes an ongoing research project that utilizes radio telemetry to transmit slope monitoring data. As part of this project the wedge structure was instrumented so that it could be continuously monitored with the aid of a computer. The application demonstrated the potential of 'micro- chip' technology to remote data collection and processing as related to rock structure monitoring, slope stability and safety."

"It is well known that Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) plays a critical role in triggering rockburst damage in burst-prone underground mines. To estimate the PPV distribution around excavations, advanced numerical modeling can be used. In wave propagation numerical modeling, velocity field is often assumed to be uniform around an excavation. However, it is observed that wave velocities near mine openings are not constant, but rather non-uniform. Wave velocity in a rock mass depends on many factors such as rock quality and confinement. In particular, confinement has a large influence on wave velocity. The confinement around an excavation is low at the wall boundary and increases gradually and reaches a constant value far away from the excavation boundary. Hence, stress redistribution due to excavation will have a profound influence on wave propagation in underground mines. A better understanding of the influence of excavation effect on wave propagation helps to interpret the field observation of rockburst damage and improve mine safety. For this purpose, a non-uniform velocity model need to be constructed and the influence excavation effect should be taken into account in numerical wave propagation modeling.In the present study, a non-linear velocity model is developed firstly by considering the influence of confinement on wave velocity. This model links wave velocity to confinement explicitly. A coupled numerical method is then developed and used to study the seismic wave pattern around excavations in underground mines. Two codes, FLAC and SPECFEM2D, are coupled in the analysis. The motivation of developing the FLAC/SPECFEM2D coupled approach is to take merit of each code, such as the stress analysis capability in FLAC and the powerful wave propagation analysis capability in SPECFEM2D. The coupling process is realized through three steps: (1) static stress redistribution around an excavation is analyzed in FLAC; (2) data for coupling analysis, such as non-uniform velocity field (based on the new developed velocity model), mesh, absorbing boundaries, etc., are generated by FISH functions in FLAC and passed to SPECFEM2D; and (3) wave propagation modeling is performed in the SPECFEM2D considering a fault-slip seismic source. Because stress redistribution around the excavation is considered, non-uniform velocity field for the SPECFEM2D model can be obtained and this is a notable feature of this study. Very large difference in the S-wave response in these two modeling approaches with uniform and non-uniform velocity fields can be seen from the modeling results.Using the FLAC/SPECFEM2D coupled modeling approach, accurate velocity models can be constructed and this in turn will help to produce accurate PPV distribution around the excavations. Accurate PPV contours can be used to identify high rockburst risk zones for improved dynamic ground support strategy."

"With the growth of large scale surface mining operations, waste disposal and stability of waste dumps pose a challenging problem to engineers. Vibrations due to blasting operations proximal to these dumps further complicates dump design. Many dumps which are statically stable may become unstable due to the effects of blasting vibrations.A joint project between CANMET and Smoky River Coal Ltd. has been initiated to study the dynamic stability of waste dumps. The study involves development of an analytical algorithm combined with field monitoring to assess dump performance.Another objective of the study is to provide baseline data for a vibration attentuation relationships for sedimentary rock (coal) environments: most studies to date are for base metal mines. The effect of dump thickness on vibration response is also addressed.The key objective of the study is to present a methodology for assessing the dynamic stability of waste dumps. "Tailings in the mining and smelting industry are reject products of the refining process which are deemed too deficient in native are to warrant smelting. They are essentially finely ground rock materials which have been moved by alluvial suspension from the site of crushing to a deposit site. It is realized that components of flotation chemicals used in specific gravity separation may become part of the tailings and also that sewage sludge or other materials may be added at some stage to the tailing deposits.It would seem, then, that as tailings have a similar parent material to soils, namely rocks, and that they have also been comminuted to similar size fractions, they would react in similar ways to soils. There is an increasing body of evidence and experience which both supports and negates this supposition. It is the object of this paper to point out similarities and contrasts between these two materials which may influence the vegetation and rehabilitation of tailings.Soil-Formlnq FactorsThere are considered to be six soil-forming factors which impart the particular and unique properties harboured by a soil at any site. It is .relevant to consider each of these in turn, as each provides an historically based parameter with which to judge tailing properties.Parent MaterialsAlthough all mineral soils have originally come from rocks, for most soils the route has been rather circuitous. Soils may be formed directly from underlying rocks, as in some parts of tropical and semitropical regions today; these are sedentary soils. However, most soils of the world have been formed by materials which were transported to their present site by ice, water or wind, or as volcanic ash. Virtually all soils in Canada have been transported by ice or water and deposited on an extraneous rock surface during the last glacial retreat. Ice-deposited materials are extraordinarily heterogeneous in their size components and may range from very bouldery and gravelly to predominantly clay-sized materials. Water deposited sediments are usually homogeneous, but nevertheless these also show considerable level variations. In many parts of Canada, clay-sized materials deposited in ephemeral post-glacial lakes form the parent material for soils."
