"The Conservative Government 's budget proposals brought forward on December 11, 1979 have been withdrawn, but they are far from dead. On the contrary, a number of those budget proposals, especially the ones which would close loopholes and result in other technical changes being made to the Income Tax Act, should be considered to be alive and well.It is not unreasonable to expect the next government, of whatever political persuasion, to reintroduce many of these technical changes in the next federal budget. For that reason, last December's budget may have offered an interesting preview of what the mining industry and other taxpayers can expect in 1980. It is quite possible that some of these changes may be effective as of the original dates announced in the withdrawn budget proposals.This month, ""Tax Notes"" reviews the main pro visions of Mr. Crosbie's December, 1979 budget, with a primary focus on the changes that would have affected the resource sector.It must be emphasized that all of the budget proposals discussed herein have been withdrawn, that none of them are law and that any actual changes in our tax rules will have to be dealt with by the new Parliament that will be assembled following the February 18 election. December 1979budget withdrawnThe federal budget proposals brought forward by Finance Minister John Crosbie on December II, 1979 were withdrawn as a result of the defeat of the Conservative Government on a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons on December 13. However, it appears quite possible that at least some of the proposals may be introduced into Parliament at a future date, possibly with retroactive effect.In a press release issued by the Department of Finance, Finance Minister John Crosbie stated that if the Conservative Government is returned to power, it will reintroduce all of the measures contained in his December II budget.Mr. Crosbie stated that all of the income tax measures contained in the budget would be reintroduced, effective on the dates indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion tabled on December II. Some of the more important measures in December II budget, and their effective dates as indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion, are discussed below.The December budget had also introduced or increased excise taxes or duties on gasoline, wines, cosmetics and photofinishing. If the Conservative party is re-elected, these measures will be reintroduced with prospective effect (i.e . effective as of new dates to be announced in the new budget)."

"The effect of composition and process variables on the properties of Marmet and modified Ni-Hard slugs will be discussed. The effect of shape on the over-all performance of grinding media and its relationship to the end product has been investigated and these results will be reviewed. The cost effectiveness of slugs versus balls has been well documented under various operating conditions and this will be presented in detail. IntroductionThe selection of grinding media is based on the cost-to-wear ratio combined with the consideration that it must stand repeated impacts without breaking. The specific consumption of grinding balls and slugs depend s primarily on their microstructure, which, in turn, is controlled by chemical composition and by the processing condition s to which they are subjected during manufacture.The first part of the paper deals with the optimization of alloy content to produce cast iron slugs with microstructures consisting essentially of marten site and carbide and with hardnesses of 650 B.H.N. and higher. The second part deals with the use of cast iron slugs to replace forged steel balls in milling operations. Tests indicate that the shape of the media has little if any effect on results and that the hardness and microstructure of grinding media will determine its relative performance. Where price is equal under similar milling conditions, the cost effectiveness of cast iron slugs is superior to that of forged steel balls.In order to understand the role of alloying elements in cast irons, it is judicious to consider the microstructural changes which occur during solidification and subsequent cooling, particularly from above the eutectoid temperature. Solidification starts with the formation and growth of dendrites of austenite. As temperature decreases, an eutectic nucleates and grows between the primary austenite dendrites. Immediately after solidification, the structure consists of proeutectic austenite and of the eutectic of primary carbides and austenite. On cooling to room temperature, austenite can be retained or transformed to pearlite, bainite, martensite or mixtures thereof. It is necessary to prevent decomposition of austenite into pearlite by adjusting the alloy content. For best abrasion resistance, the microstructure at room temperature should consist essentially of martensite and carbide. These types of irons are known as ""martensitic irons "". Depending on the carbon content of the austenite and cooling rate, "" as-cast"" martensitic irons will contain different proportions of martensite and retained austenite. The more carbon in solution in the austenite, the lower is the temperature at which the martensitic transfoemation takes place. By the time room temperature is reached ., the transformation is seldom complete, and the end product is generally a mixture of martensite and retained austenite."

"The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. Recommended solutions are given for minimizing this problem and the realities of obtaining accurate figures are discussed.IntroductionThe start-up over the last few years of new hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver has brought to the surface again a number of problems. Most of the problems have existed for some time and they manifest themselves mainly in two ways. Firstly, the plant results do not agree with the metallurgical testwork figures; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures do not balance.Metallurgical TestworkThe plant results not agreeing with testwork figures are mainly due to:a) testwork samples not representative of the eventual plant feed;b) misinterpretation or misunderstanding of testwork ;c) plant losses;d) plant design not allowing testwork results to be achieved;e) operating deficiencies."

"Geerite (Cu1.6S) is a rhombohedral copper sulphide which occurs naturally in epitactic replacement of sphalerite; cell dimensions closely approximate those of the host sphalerite.Geerite-type structures can be produced by leaching digenite (Cu1.8S) in ferric sulphate solutions. X -ray diffract ion and electron microprobe studies indicate that eight metastable geeritetype structures can be produced, depending upon the concentration of f erric sulphate solution used and the duration of the each. Although compositions cluster on or near values observed for natural phases, optical properties indicate that we are dealing with polymorphs of these phases. Leaching of chalcocite (CU2Sj in dilute f erric sulphate solutions produces similar results. In contrast, leaching of chalcocite in more concentrated solutions seems to produce true analogues of natural minerals.During froth flotation, sphalerite is activated with a monolayer of floatable copper sulphide with the composition, CuS, of the mineral covellite. However, covellite is not significantly more floatable than sphalerite, and has an incompatible structure because of the presence of covalently-bonded atoms of sulphur. Leaching ofdigenite was used to produce a polymorph of covellite with a geerite-type structure, compatible with that of sphalerite. This polymorph has a flotational behaviour similar to copper-activated sphalerite, suggesting that the monolayer has a geerite-type CuS structure. IntroductionIn an ideal close-packed sulphide structure the distance between sulphur layers, D, is equal to 2R 2/3, where R is the radius of the sulphur atoms. In sulphides with covalently-bonded sulphur layers, such as covellite (Fig. I), D will be an average of the number of covalentl y-bonded and close-packed sulphur layers, weighted as to the relative number of each type of layer. Both D and R are spacings which are readily identifiable structurally and on X-ray diffraction patterns. Goblel has shown that for copper-iron sulphides with metal-to-sulphur ratios between 0 and 2 and copper-to-total metal ratio s between 113 and I there are strong correlations between composition and measured D and R distances (Fig. 2). D can be represented by a single empirical equation relating interlayer spacing to composition; R must be represented by three equations relating the radius of sulphur atoms to composition. One of these equations (R, in Fig. 2) represents ideal close-packed behaviour, the other two represent sulphur radii greater than (R1) or less than (Rh) the ideal."

During bioleaching processes of sulfide minerals, the sulfide minerals act as the natural habitats for acidophiles, of which, most are autotrophic iron and sulfur oxidizing microbes. These microbes acquire energy by oxidation of sulfide minerals, and play crucial role in bioleaching processes. In the industrial bioleaching heaps, microbial community and their activity are highly related to engineering configurations, while the optimized industrial operation can help to fast dissolution of aim minerals and acid/iron balance under optimized microbial condition. Microbial community succession and activity formation, the function of microbes to mineral dissolution, the mechanisms to promotion and inhibition of sulfide minerals oxidation, and the industrial instances for microbial community regulation were reviewed. For these instances, promoted microbial activity helped to fast pyrite oxidation for sulfuric acid generation, which realized zero sulfur acid addition to the irrigation solution in the initiation of a bioleaching heaps. High microbial activity by optimized operation parameters improved Cu leaching efficiency during the heap bioleaching process. And also by inhibition of microbial activity, especially the iron oxidizing microbes, the excessive pyrite oxidation can be inhibited, which helped to the acid/iron balance during heap bioleaching. INTRODUCTION Around the world, high grade copper ore are exploited, while barely new high-grade deposits are succeeded, the copper grade of ore deposit is constantly decreasing. The increasing copper demands worldwide requests to process these low-grade ore deposits. Processing of low-grade ores are not economical by usual extraction processes. Heap leaching is a cheaper process for recovery of low-grade ores, and has been applied to extract valuable metals from sulfide minerals worldwide, such as copper, gold, uranium and nickel (Gericke et al., 2009). Heap leaching process has greatly decreased the economic grade and expanded the recoverable ore reserve worldwide (Brierley, 2008). It is usually carried out in the open environments, and could process huge amount of ore (usually in millions of tonnes in one reactor) in the heap reactor (Gericke et al., 2009). For copper sulfide, especially the secondary copper sulfides, heap (dump) bioleaching is successfully applied. Heap bioleaching process is cost saving, and sometimes can be achieved without adding chemical into heaps, by microbial fixing of the atmospheric N2 and CO2, and generating oxidant Fe3+ and sulfuric acid in heaps from oxidation of sulfide minerals. Also heap bioleaching is environment friendly by cycling use of the leaching solution, and without exhaust emission.

"This paper looks at how Syncrude Canada Ltd. is utilizing the Conveyor Belt Monitoring technology developed and patented by the Australian CSIRO and licensed to Syncrude by Conveyor Belt Monitoring of North America, Inc. The technology involves magnetizing the steel cables in the conveyor belts and detecting the fields produced by breaks, gaps or cable ends using special sensors which feed the signals into a multi- channel recorder to provide permanent traces of the various events taking place in the steel cable belts.The data is analyzed and combined with existing belt audit programs, to assist in predicting belt life, change-out criteria and belt design, belt loading and construction. All of these applications of the CBM technology leads to better utilization of resources and forms an integral part of the conveying system reliability program."

"The Superior Province of the Canadian Shield is the largest gold producing area within Archean greenstone rocks in the world, with total production of over 140 million ounces of gold. One hundred and fifty-five mines have individually produced more than 8,000 ounces, although only a relatively limited number of deposits (33) produced more than one million ounces of gold. The output from these 33 deposits accounts, however, for 85% of total gold production. The majority of grades (68%) ranges between 0.10 and 0.30 ounce per ton, and there is no linear relationship between grade and tonnage.Development of new gold mines reflects the history of gold prices. However, the response to the latest increase in gold prices was not as marked. It is concluded that gold deposits are becoming increasingly more difficult to find and new exploration techniques are urgently required.IntroductionWith most of its production coming out of the Superior Province, the Canadian Shield is the largest producer of gold from Archean greenstone rock s in the world. In total gold production, the Superior Province is surpassed only by the paleo-placers of Witwatersrand and the placers of the USSR (Anhaeusser, 1976). There has been no attempt so far to compile the historical production of the Province as a whole in a single document. The aim of this work is to fill this gap, not only for the convenience of having a complete list of gold producers, but, more importantly, as a basis on which to study the tonnage and grade characteristics of these deposits."

The bath smelting process is one of the key techniques applied in the current copper smelting production, which includes bottom-blown and side-blown furnaces differently from the direction of gas injection. Liquid matte and slag form the bath in the smelting furnace. To better understand the fluid dynamic of the bath and further optimise the operational efficiencies in the smelting furnace, physical simulation of the bath in the horizontal cylindrical reactor was investigated. The mixing behaviour and wave motion of the bath in the bottom-blown and side-blown furnaces have been studied systematically. The mixing time is reduced with increasing gas flowrate and height of the lower layer, while it increases significantly with increasing the height of the upper layer. The wave motion in the furnaces can be suppressed with the presence of the upper layer, but the bath with a lower density generates higher wave amplitude. Overall, in comparison to bottom-blown mixing, side-blown mixing shows better mixing efficiency and lower wave amplitude. In addition, the plume eye and splash phenomena occurred in the bottom-blown furnace have also been studied. INTRODUCTION The bath smelting process is one of the principal techniques used in the current copper making industry. The bath smelting techniques have some advantages of high smelting efficiencies, low capital costs, low energy consumptions and reduced dust generations. From the direction of gas injection, the bath smelting techniques can be classified into five general types: (1) top-submerged blown, e.g. Ausmelt and Isasmelt; (2) top-suspended blown, such as Mitsubishi smelting; (3) top direct-to-copper smelting, such as Outokumpu smelting; (4) submerged side-blown, such as Noranda and Teniente smelting; (5) bottom-blown, such as Dongying Fangyuan bottom-blown copper smelting furnace (Schlesinger et al., 2002; Zhao, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Perez-Tello et al., 2018). In many metallurgical processes involving bath smelting situations, the objectives of agitation are to accelerate the bath homogenization inside the bath which makes a significant contribution to process efficiency and product quality. Extensive mixing studies have been performed for ladle refining and tundish associated to steelmaking processes through water physical models. Mixing time is the parameter used to quantify the efficiency of mixing in the liquid bath and the first empirical equation predicting mixing time was proposed by Nakanishi, Fujii and Szekely (1975). Later on, more systematic studies have been carried out on ladle mixing and researchers realized that the geometry of the vessel could also have a significant impact on mixing (Khajaviand & Barati, 2010). However, the investigations using ladles which are vertical cylindrical vessels, cannot be directly used in the study of mixing behaviour in horizontal cylindrical reactors. Understanding the fluid dynamics inside horizontal cylindrical bath smelter is useful from the industrial perspective. Recently fluid dynamics of horizontal cylindrical smelter related to copper smelting have been studied by the authors’ group (Shui et al., 2015a, 2015b, 2018a; 2018b; Xu et al., 2018, 2019).

"Abstract - The McDougall-Despina fault set in the Noranda district of northwestern Quebec defines the eastern margin of the Despina cauldron, nested within the district-scale Noranda cauldron. The faults are stratabound in that they displace stratigraphy of the cauldron fill, but do not off-set the cauldron cover. The faults are occupied by dikes that acted as eruptive centers to volcanic members of the cauldron-filling sequence. Measurable displacement across the McDougall-Despina fault set is greater than 750 m, and coincident with post-cauldron volcanism. Feeder dikes cross-cut each other and are typically depleted in Na2O and CaO, and enriched in MgO, K2O, Fe2O3 and MnO relative to fresh flows. Economic and subeconomic massive sulfide deposits occur adjacent to the McDougall-Despina fault set at different levels over a stratigraphic thickness of 3000 m. These include the Corbet deposit, the subeconomic D-68 Zone deposits, and the subeconomic stringer zones of South Rusty Hill and Bedford Hill. Numerous copper occurrences and abundant hydrothermal alteration occur in and immediately adjacent to the fault set.The McDougall, Despina, and adjacent, parallel, ancillary faults define a synvolcanic fault set which controlled the location of magmatism, hydrothermal alteration and mineral deposition during the early evolution of the Noranda cauldron. Significant sulfide mineral deposition commonly occurred in proximity to the intersection of the McDougall-Despina fault set with northeast-trending synvolcanic faults. Recognition of synvolcanic faults is therefore a major objective of exploration programs for volcanic-associated massive sulfide deposits."

"A support system for large ground convergence conditions or burst-prone ground must contain holding elements (rockbolts, cable bolts, etc.) that are strong yet capable of sustaining large deformations, i.e., they must absorb as much energy as possible. Steel wire rope anchored in a borehole by a friction bolt provides these desired yield characteristics if the frictional anchorage is placed deep enough into the rockmass, i.e., in non-yielding rock or beyond the expected depth of rock ejected during a rockburst. Pull-out tests were conducted on wire ropes anchored by inflated Swellex bolts to assess the feasibility of this support concept. The test results demonstrate that a Swellex bolt generates a frictional anchorage that allows the wire rope to slide at high loads and to absorb significantly more energy than either a Swellex bolt alone, or a cement-grouted cable.The rope/friction bolt combination can be engineered to provide the desired energy absorption and allowable deformation by varying the installed lengths of the friction bolt and the rope. For yielding rope support, the contact length between the rope and Swellex bolt must be short enough to ensure that the rope can slip well before its tensile capacity is reached. A safe maximum overlap length is about one metre for the wire rope used in this testing. When used as support in the backs of drifts, a swaged button on the ropes end must be used to ultimately mobilize the full rope capacity thereby protecting against gravity-driven falls of ground."

INTRODUCTION This symposium at Cu 2019 has been organised to honour and celebrate the career and achievements of Dr Phillip John Mackey, an internationally recognised expert in the production of non-ferrous metals, especially copper and nickel smelting and refining. Phillip was born in Epping, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 19 April 1941 and is one of 4 children of Gilbert and Philomena (nee Bartlett) Mackey. After completing Primary School in Epping, he attended Marist Brothers High School in Eastwood, Sydney and graduated in 1957 as the Dux of the School. Phillip’s father, being on the staff of the Sydney Technical College, in Ultimo, Sydney had the opportunity in the early 1950s to meet the late Professor Sir Rupert Myers, Foundation Professor of the School of Metallurgy at the New South Wales University of Technology (later called the University of New South Wales or UNSW). Gilbert Mackey was impressed by the new young Professor of Metallurgy and encouraged his son to study metallurgy - at the time an expanding industry in post-war Australia. EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Phillip commenced at UNSW in 1958, graduating with honours in 1963. His undergraduate education and training included a few years of part-time study while working at British Motor Corporation on sheet metal forming of car bodies. At University Phillip developed his talent for teamwork. He was a contributing writer to the University newspaper, Secretary of the UNSW Students’ Union and was active in the UNSW Metallurgical Society and co-editor in 1963 of “Metallurgical Review,” the annual journal of the UNSW Metallurgical Society. His diverse interests and curiosity about the world around him were likely nourished while at University. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree, Phillip was awarded a Commonwealth of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He began his PhD in 1964 on the thesis topic “Studies in Heat Transfer between Dispersed Liquid Metals and Gaseous Atmospheres” working under the supervision of then Associate Professor Noel Warner, an outstanding Professor at the University. Professor Warner is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Birmingham and is internationally respected for his pioneering theoretical and practical work on established and innovative smelting processes.

The expansion project in Naoshima smelter and refinery to meet enhancing recycling business of E-scrap was successfully completed in 2016 to have a capacity of 110,000 tpa of E-scrap treatment. Increasing treatment of E-scrap has raised the Ni content of copper anode to 4000 ppm on average, which is double the level of 10 years ago, and to 6000 ppm or more occasionally. The tank house has refined such copper anode to copper cathode with starter sheets. Since most Ni in Copper anode dissolves in copper electrolyte, the Ni content of the electrolyte has increased to 27 g/L and more. Ni accumulated in the electrolyte has increased power consumption during the electrolytic refining of copper, although cathode quality has been controlled satisfactory so far. In order to ensure sustainable operation while growing E- scrap business, the NiSO4 process has been expanded recently so as to recover Ni in the electrolyte more and the pressurized-leaching technology will be introduced to the slime leaching process so as to enhance the capacity of slime treatment and to improve Ni recovery in the near future. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the treatment amount of E-scrap at Naoshima smelter and refinery has increased according to the growth of its recycling business as shown in Figure 1, while impurities from E-scrap have concentrated in copper anode as well. Especially, Ni content in anode has been increasing remarkably since 2012, causing to raise Ni content in the electrolyte as shown in Figure 2. The increment of Ni content in copper anode and electrolyte has adversely affected the electrorefining process, slime leaching process, and NiSO4 crystallization process at the tank house. Such severe conditions provided opportunities to redesign the tank house to establish a robust process to which more Ni is acceptable.

"The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumedlate Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: mon-zonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group ofrocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr,Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or miningdistrict, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cuand Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1)porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfde deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, east-west, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolutionof the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic min-eralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magmamay have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. "This paper reports the results of a finite element study of the geothermal heatflow into dry mine airways. For isotropic and unsteady state conditions the heatflow into mine airways is studied for a range of surface heat transfer coefficients between rock and air, and age of the airway. Dimensionless temperature gradient values are presented in tables for different values of Boit and Fourier numbers and the results are compared with Starfield tables and Gibson algorithm. It is found that Starfield tables have consistently over-predicted the G values with errors ranging from 2% to 10%. The differences between results obtained from the finite element study and the G values calculated from Gibson's approximation method are mapped. The small error values over a large range of Fourier and Biot numbers confirm the suitability of Gibson's algorithm to rapidly calculate G values for estimating the heat transfer from surrounding rock to mine air.IntroductionIn many underground mines heat is a major problem, and the provision of acceptable working conditions requires considerable expenditure on ventilation systems. The rational design and operation of these systems depend upon an understanding of the various sources of heat in the mine. The natural source, i.e. geothermal heat, contributes up to 80% of total heat added to mine air and it is difficult to analyze and predict the heat owing to a number of influencing variables. The problem of geothermal heat flow has been studied by many investigators (Goch, 1940; Starfield, 1966; Hemp, 1987; Amano et al., 1982; McPherson, 1986).The primary concern of this paper is to develop a better ready reference dimensionless transient temperature table for estimating heatflow at any stage of mine airway life."

"A computer-based drill core logging system used to examine computer-based drill core logging system used to examine copper mineralization hosted in volcaniclastic rocks at the Sustut deposit, in north-central British Columbia, has many advantages over conventional logging. A relatively simple format for recording geological information allows complex, but significant, geologic parameters to be recorded consistently, accurately and quickly. This allows graphical presentations and statistical interpretation of the data that lead to rapid and detailed analyses of the control and distribution of copper mineralization at the Sustut deposit.Ore mineralization is concentrated in lens-shaped bodies and is zoned from native copper cores through chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite to a margin containing pyrite. Chalcocite, the principal mineral, occurs mainly in volcaniclastic agglomerate characterized by a specific grain size, a narrow range of matrix and fragment proportions, and a specific sorting.IntroductionWe report here a case history of the practical application of a detailed computer-based drill core logging system applied to the Sustut copper deposit of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The Sustut deposit, containing a few tens of millions of tons of ore grading slightly more than one per cent copper (Church, 1975), is in north-central British Columbia about 875 km north of Vancouver. The deposit is contained in volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Moosevale Formation, which is within the upper part of the Takla Group (Monger and Church, 1977) of basic volcanic and associated sedimentary rocks. Takla rocks occur along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt in the Canadian Cordillera (Sutherland Brown et al., 1971). The deposit consists of concentrations of copper sulphides, native copper and pyrite within pods and lenses parallel to bedding in the host sedimentary rocks. These sheet-like deposits exhibit a mineral zoning from pyrite at the fringes successively through chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite to native copper at the core (Wilton, 1978; Wilton and Sinclair, 1979)."

"Early in mine development at Quintette Coal Limited major problems were encountered with the fleets of primary equipment which seriously hampered production. These major fleets (cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, hydraulic drills and electric trucks) have consequently been the focal point of maintenance efforts. Some were prototypes in the Canadian mining scene and brought with them new concerns to test their skills. The problems were studied and the category and areas which were having the greatest impact on the reliability of the equipment were determined. Once defined, priorities were established and a program was initiated which was designed to accomplish a resolution. Resulting from implementation of this systematic approach, over the past three and one-half years, the fleets are now giving good reliability and industry standard availabilities. Along with these significant achievements, cost per operating hour on some of the equipment fleets has decreased substantially and continue a downtrend through 1987. This paper identifies the problems and describes the resolutions. IntroductionIn the early years of the mine development, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) experienced production shortfalls due to problems with the major excavator and haulage fleets. A large fleet of hydraulic excavators had been purchased, and QCL was among the first northern users of all hydraulic blasthole drills. They were also using some prototype equipment and encountered problems which were not common on other types of equipment or were unknown.Because of these unique problems and lack of experience from other mines to draw on, an analytical approach was taken to areas and associated causes of the delays affecting the availability and reliability of equipment. This was done by dividing the equipment downtime into seven classifications of delays, i.e. maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, damage, service and preventative maintenance, and tires; and then each was expressed as a percentage of total downtime. Subsequently each of the delay classification was divided into categories e.g. electrical to six categories - wheel motors, main alternator, relays, cards, no propel, lighting and 24 V system. Then, the basis for further study had been established.From this preliminary analysis of historic records, it was possible to determine the areas which were causing the majority of the downtime. These areas were then analyzed to evaluate causes and to determine possible solutions to the problem s. This paper addresses the major fleets, their problems and eventual solutions. Degradation by sulfur gases is an important lining wear mechanism in the copper industry. SO2/SO3 gases infiltrate into the pores of the basic refractory bricks, combine with their raw materials through expansive reactions and significantly modify the bricks’ structure. This study presents a comparison of the corrosion resistance against sulfur attack of different magnesia-based refractories using a simple, low-cost and quantitative method. Recipes containing sintered MgO grains showed lower resistance to corrosion by sulfur oxides compared to basic grades containing fused grains. Chromium corundum grades were used as a reference and showed very good resistance to this corrosion mechanism under the test conditions. The novel test provided relevant results that agree with what is commonly observed during operation and in previous post-mortem studies. This tool could be very useful in selecting refractory grades for the copper industry and predicting their performance. INTRODUCTION Oxidation of matte sulfides during copper production leads to the formation of sulfur oxides, which infiltrate into the pores of the refractory lining and react with the basic oxides below 1000°C to form magnesium and calcium sulfates. This reaction is accompanied by an expressive volume increase, consequent densification of the refractory microstructure and weakening of the brick bond (Malfliet et al., 2013). Thus, corrosion by SO2/SO3 is an important wear mechanism in the non-ferrous industry and the resistance to this compound should be considered when defining refractories for this application. Previous studies on this matter include expensive and complex testing methods involving pressurized SO2 gas cylinders in order to investigate the corrosion resistance of MgO-containing materials by sulfur oxides (Gerle & Podwórny et al., 2016; Fotoyi & Eric, 2011; Fotoyi, 2009; Podwórny & Piotrowski et al., 2008). The current study was based on a test developed by Pacheco & Fonseca (2018) to assess alkali infiltration and aims to provide an evaluation method of the corrosion resistance of refractories by SO2/SO3 in a simple and quantitative manner. This novel test is useful to compare the corrosion resistance of different refractory recipes and properly select the grades that should be employed in the non-ferrous industry. A case study is provided to illustrate the damage caused by sulfur oxides in refractory linings.

"Like other operating mine sites, Placer Dome Inc. - Campbell Mine has taken important steps over the last few years to address environmental issues.This paper will provide specific insights into the implementation of an environmental management system at Campbell. In particular, it will focus on how Campbell developed its plan of action; the lessons that have been learned; the over-all steps that are being taken to enhance environmental stewardship and effectively manage relationships with key stakeholders.IntroductionThe development of an Environmental Management System at Campbell Mine has been part of a general development in management practices which has taken place at the mine during 1990. This paper will discuss the components of the management system in the topic areas of: direction setting; environmental organization; issue assessment; emergency response plan; training ; monitoring/verification; reporting and data management; and relationship management.Although this paper focuses on environmental management systems, the development of this system has partly been a function of responses to other issues which have been addressed concurrently with environmental concerns. These other issues include development of operations management, human resources practices, and safety management practices at the mine. As the Environmental Management System developed, various stakeholders associated with local environmental concerns were identified. This group of stakeholders include the local community; municipal, provincial and federal governments; government agencies; Campbell employees; and the Placer Dome Inc. Corporation."
