In 1984 and 1985, two 7.6m diameter TBM tunnels were driven from the Donkin-Morien peninsula in Nova Scotia to access the Harbour coal seam. The design of the ground support was based on identifying zones of rock failure through the application of the Hoek Brown failure criterion and the early use of finite element analyses. In 1992, the mining project was abandoned and the tunnels allowed to flood. Monitoring data from the tunnel was subsequently used as a case study in the development of the concepts of brittle rock behaviour. In 2007, the tunnels were pumped out as part of a feasibility study into the reintroduction of longwall mining into the coalfield. There is a good match between observations of the collapse zones in the roof and sides of the tunnel and a simple elastic analysis using brittle parameters, a spalling limit of 5, and a low independent shear modulus. The brittle analyses form the basis of the design for the resupport of the tunnels.

"Teck Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. In the zinc plant, zinc concentrates are roasted to produce calcine, which is then processed in the leaching circuit for zinc recovery. Calcine is first dissolved at pH <2.0. This is followed by a precipitation stage using additional calcine that removes iron as a ferric hydroxide precipitate which is recycled to the lead operations. It is during this pH adjustment that impurities, notably arsenic, antimony and germanium, are co-precipitated with ferric hydroxide which is the primary removal phase for these elements. Recent processing conditions have resulted in lower iron inputs to the leaching circuit and this has resulted in insufficient co-precipitation of key impurities. This paper summarizes the influence of iron concentrations on impurity removal using laboratory and plant scale surveys, and emphasizes key specification limits for the primary iron removal circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe Sulphide Leach Plant (SLP) at Teck Metals Ltd., Trail Operations produces a zinc sulphate electrolyte from three different zinc bearing streams:1. Calcine, primarily containing zinc oxide, from the roasters2. Zinc electrolyte from the Oxide Leach Plant (OLP) is produced by leaching zinc oxide fume from the pyrometallurgical lead smelting operations3. Zinc slurry from the Zinc Pressure Leach (ZPL) autoclaveThe feed sources are blended and introduced to the iron removal process to precipitate iron in the form of a hydrolyzed iron precipitate which is recycled to the lead smelting operation. Along with iron, impurities, namely arsenic, antimony, germanium and silica, also co-precipitate; this process acts as the primary removal step for these elements. Following iron removal, the electrolyte is further processed in the zinc dust purification circuits. Cadmium and copper are removed in the cold stage circuit via zinc dust cementation, followed by cobalt cementation in the hot stage circuit."

"A key element for a successful mining operation is the grinding circuit. It must be reliable, maintainable and must perform to or above design capacities for 95% of the time. Once chosen and installed major modifications are either prohibitive or very expensive. The selection of mills and drive system is probably the single most important decision made within the concentrator complex.Economic studies revealed that the optimum expansion for Lornex was a 68070 increase in plant throughput. This indicated that the new mill would have to be larger than the existing 32-foot mills.The Lornex ore has a wide range of hardness which has a great influence on mill throughput (Table 1). To smooth out the fluctuations, a blending program ha s always been in effect at the mine, coupled with ball charge control for the primary mills. As can be appreciated, an optimum balance is difficult to achieve. A sudden change to so ft ore with a high ball charge puts the mill into jeopardy with a constant speed drive.The blending philosophy would continue after the expansion, but with the addition o f a second primary crusher, it was envisaged to have the new mill process harder ore to maintain production targets. In theory, the new mill would have a proportionally larger ball charge than the existing mills.This scheme makes the new mill vulnerable for processing so ft ore for a fixed speed mill. Thus, variable speed seemed an attractive option.In early 1979 prominent mill manufacturers were invited to submit proposals for the new mill. Fixed and variable speed mills were to be considered with mill size ranging from 32-foot to 36-foot diameter. The proposals were to include the drive, ball charge, % critical speed, couplings, gears, etc. - the complete package. The recommendations were variable with most manufacturers submitting several alternatives. Recommended mill speed varied from 68% to 78% critical. The concept of variable speed was becoming more attractive, Lornex ultimately decided on a twin DC motor drive system for a 34-foot diameter mill.After start-up it was discovered that best throughput occurred at 78% mill critical speed or top speed of the drive motors. The motor speed range was adjusted upward from 186 to 200 rpm. Today the mills operate at 79% critical or a motor speed o f 193.5 rpm.Clearly the selection of the variable speed mill allowed the flexibility to optimize throughput."

The presence of iron in base metal leach solutions complicates nickel and copper recovery processes. Leach solutions are commonly purified by precipitating iron as hematite, jarosite or goethite. Fast oxidation of ferrous to ferric is an important step to remove iron by precipitation at low pH values. This study reviews the ferrous oxidation mechanism and reaction rates in chloride media using molecular oxygen. This work contributes to the development of a better understanding of iron precipitation processing steps, which continues to be an important matter in hydrometallurgy. The specific objectives were to investigate (1) the effect of key process variables (acid concentration, copper concentration, and temperature) on the rate and extent of ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen and (2) the oxidation mechanism by varying chloride and hydrogen ion concentrations separately. Batch oxidation tests were performed using synthetic chloride solutions containing 45 g/L Fe and 3 g/L Ni at 50 and 80°C, dissolved Cu concentrations (0.3 to 3 g/L) and HCl concentrations (2 to 4.6 M). Regression analysis indicated that the significance of the effect of different variables on the extent of oxidation achieved after five hours decreased in the following order: HCl concentration > Cu concentration > temperature. Increasing the HCl concentration from 4 M to 4.6 M caused the degree of oxidation achieved after two hours to increase from 58.3% to 98.1%. The catalytic effect of dissolved copper on ferrous oxidation was more significant at low acid concentrations. Experimental data suggest that rapid oxidation of ferrous is possible at high HCl concentrations for two main reasons. First, the formation of ferrous chloride complexes allows ferrous oxidation to proceed without the formation of superoxide as an intermediate product (the rate limiting step in dilute acid solutions). Second, the formation of ferric chloride complexes stabilises the oxidation product.

"The Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs and quartz and quartz sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anticline. The anticlinal structure is complex and the mineralization was considered prior to development to be dominantly strata controlled. Gold grades vary up to 160 gin 1.5 m core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of ore reserves for such a deposit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of gold grade.This paper describes the structural and variogram analysis of the gold grades and demonstrates the importance of incorporating the geological model in such an analysis. Variogram interpretation is greatly improved and greater insights into the finer geological structure areprovided. Part 2ofthis work presents the application of multigaussian kriging to reserve estimation for deposits with highly variable grade and which consequently demand highly selective mining operations. IntroductionThe Enterprise Gold Mine is situated some 220 km southeast of Darwin in Australia&apos;s tropical north. Gold is believed to have been discovered there in 1869 during the construction of the overland telegraph line.From 1894to 1915, some 75 000 ounces of gold were produced from 121 000 tonnes mined mainly by Chinese leaseholders. From 1906 to 1915, government-sponsored drilling led to the sinking of the Enterprise Shaft to 79 m and several drives were developed. Mining ceased because of war.Since late 1980, Goldfields Exploration Pty. Ltd. had explored on several mining tenements near Pine Creek under joint venture with the title holders, Enterprise Mines NL. This work culminated in the development of the current mine which opened on October 29, 1985.Feasibility studies to determine the economic viability of mining were based on ore reserves generated by project geologists using a sectional polygonal approach tuned to the interpreted geological control of the mineralization.The study motivating this two-part paper covers are-estimation of the recoverable reserve s using the geostatistical approach of multigaussian kriging developed at Stanford University, (Verly, 1984)."

ABSTRACT: Rock bolts are the main form of defence against rock falls in mines. Conditions under-ground are conducive to corrosion. A perception exists about American coal mines that bolt corrosion is not an issue, especially when bolts are fully grouted. This perception is not necessarily accurate due to the formation of micro-cracks as the resin sets and to subsequent rock movement that breaks the resin column’s continuity. Corrosion should be considered when designing rock bolt support in long-term excavations. This paper explores the problem of corrosion, outlines a method to determine the corrosion potential of bolts, and suggests ways to mitigate such effects.

Plotting sets of data collected over time using a frequency-magnitude distribution is common with both earthquake and mining seismology. A Time-Between-Events (TBE) analysis technique simply makes use of the inter-event times and b-values (slopes of the best fit lines on the frequency-magnitude charts) from the same set of data. Four distinct patterns in TBE versus Event Magnitude have been found which suggest whether there are constant seismic sources causing populations of data, or if the smaller and larger events, within the population represent varying seismic sources. Different rates of events, identified as TBE-rates in this study, may suggest whether the events are blast induced, or not. This study was done using actual seismic datasets from hardrock mines in Canada and Australia. This was to verify the applicability of the method to multiple mining environments and to determine the practicality and implications of this methodology to enhance the interpretation of seismic source mechanisms The results of the TBE technique and other proven techniques are combined into a Seismic Mechanism Assessment Worksheet. This is a tool that allows operators to compare trends within seismic datasets with assessments of in-situ rock conditions. The goal is to enhance the understanding of rockmass failure mechanisms.

Saganoseki Smelter, one of the largest copper producers in Japan, currently operates a single flash smelting furnace to produce 450,000 tons of new copper annually. The smelter used to employ two flash furnaces, and integrated the two into one in 1996. Since then, various improvements to its facilities and technologies have been made to increase productivity. To upgrade the operation efficiency, "stability" was considered a key issue, and the measures were taken to increase the operation and facility reliability. Currently, the furnace is running at a feed rate of 215 DMT/h, while the furnace utilization has been maintained at 97%. This paper outlines recent improvements that have made to increase furnace productivity and efficiency.

"The On-Stream Analyzer has proven, and is still proving to be, an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the analyzer results by using a real-time material balance program to calculate the mass flow rates within the streams of a circuit for process control, analysis and optimization as well as for the detection of sensor malfunction. The material balance algorithm improves measurements and give good estimates of unmeasured variables during normal operating conditions. The potential and limitations of the method are illustrated using results of an application to the Line 3 flotation circuit of Brunswick Mining and Smelting, New Brunswick.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants isincreasing. Commercial OSAs include a sampling system that collectssamples from various streams of a circuit and exposes thesamples to an X-ray beam. The sample then generates X-ray pulsesthat are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs(Leroux and Franklin, 1994). The estimated assays arepassed to the flotation operators via operator consoles, or to controlloops of various degrees of complexity (McKee, 1991), whichmanipulate reagent addition, aeration rate or froth thickness toensure an adequate operation of the plant. "Existing environmental, health and safety regulations have forced pyrometallurgical facilities worldwide to drastically change some of their traditional methods of operation. In extreme cases, a number of facilities have been closed due to their inability to conform to these existing regulations. Tougher future legislation and government policy will lead to more stringent regulations and enforcement policies. The efficient control of smelter secondary emissions will, therefore, become critical to successful smelter operation.Much attention has been paid to the smelter primary process off-gas systems, including the development of new process designs to reduce the number of uncontrolled transfer operations. However, even the most modem smelter design requires control of its secondary contaminant sources, which mayor may not be directly related to the process operation.This paper discusses some of the potential secondary emissions encountered in many of the present process technologies. A few of the emission sources presented are only periodic in nature, such as those caused by maintenance procedures, but which have the capability of forcing smelter shut-down because of their direct impact on worker health and safety. The paper deals with a variety of topics relating to the efficient control, maintenance and monitoring of secondary emissions in copper, nickel, aluminum, magnesium and lead smelters, as well as in iron foundries and steel making facilities. Examples of the typical problems encountered in each of the above process operations are presented, including fume control at furnace tapping and slagging locations, metal transfer stations, tapping launders, and ladle transfer operations. The parameters for the most efficient design of fume capture systems, problems encountered with the handling and clean-up of certain collected emissions, and examples of successful solutions in particular operations are discussed."

"The Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) brought together all of the key stakeholders in Canada&apos;s mining industry to develop a framework whereby the industry can meet the challenges that it faces into the 21st century. The WMI Accord7 which was signed at the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 137 1994, touches all of the important issues that confront the industry, including taxation. IntroductionSeptember 13, 1994, was a historical day for Canada&apos;s mining industry. On that day, on the occasion of the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) Accord was signed by the leaders of the five principal stakeholders in the industry: industry; government; labour; environmentalists; and aboriginals. The Accord is the culmination of two years of hard work and intense collaboration by these stakeholders. But, the Accord is not the end result. The Accord can better be described as a springboard to a prosperous future for mining in Canada.The WMI had its beginnings at the Mines Ministers Conference in Whitehorse, Yukon, in September 1992 (hence, the name of the initiative). At that time, the mining industry was well aware of the serious challenges facing the industry, including significantly increased competition for mineral investment from other mining countries, coupled with an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding land access, environmental regulations, and taxation. Subsidence can cause serious damage to surface installations such as railroads, highways, pipelines, buildings and other facilities over a period of many years. Although total elimination of the effects of subsidence is difficult, the damage can be minimized through a systematic analysis. An example of such a study for reducing the effects of subsidence on pipelines is presented in this paper. Subsidence-induced stresses on a pipeline over some coal mining properties in Utah have been analyzed using a computer with graphics capabilities. The results are useful in predicting the extent of damages due to mining subsidence. In view of the gradual replacement of room-and-pillar mining by longwall with caving, this sort of analysis will become more and more important. In the next phase of this study the predicted results will be compared with the permissible stress levels on pipelines over actual subsided areas in an actual case.

It is based on a paper presented by the author at recent seminars in Moscow and Tashkent on the subject of mine evaluation.IntroductionTaxation can have a strong influence on the feasibility of a mining project. For the most part, because metal prices are determined on a global basis, the mining concern is not able to pass on to its customers any portion of taxes which the concern has to pay. Taxes are a direct charge against the project. The purpose of the article is to highlight the various ways whereby different taxes can affect the financial viability of a mining operation.The first part of the paper identifies different forms of taxation, and the second part of the paper addresses the different forms of taxation in terms of risk analysis and impacts on the mining project. Finally, the third part of the paper makes brief mention of using the taxation system to provide incentives with respect to investment in mining activities."

"The problem of crud in solvent extraction is well known and can be a major handicap and operational issue. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Flocculation can be utilized to remove some of the troublesome particulates but colloidal silica does not flocculate well and presents a different problem requiring innovative chemistry to solve. Coagulants can assist by facilitating the removal of this colloidal silica by promoting the agglomeration of the particles to a size which can be more readily settled or flocculated in solid/liquid separations. This is achieved when the coagulants bind to the surfaces, displacing water and destabilizing the colloids, whereupon they bind to each other which facilitate their amenability to conventional flocculation.INTRODUCTIONSilicate minerals are abundant in the upper layers of the Earth’s crust, and there are few mineral deposits without significant levels of gangue silicates. Silicate minerals include the pure silicas, such as quartz and other silicate containing minerals such as clays, chlorites, feldspars, as well a vast number of less common silicates.During the acid leaching of ores, two types of fine silica particles are released in solution from the dissolution of the host mineral. The first consists of partly depleted silicates, and the second is colloidal silica, which forms in solution. It is this second type which has the potential to cause crud formation as well as poor solution clarities, slow filter rates and excessive flocculant usage (Figure1)."

"Oil has been discovered off Newfoundland in a number of locations on the Grand Banks, the most notable and exciting being in 1979 when Hibernia was discovered. This discovery has brought new challenges to the province as well as to all of Canada. During the seven years"" since its discovery, both industry and governments have attempted to define its parameters and to find the most efficient and economical way to develop the field.A number of studies have been completed during the interval and in 1985, Mobil Canada Ltd. and partners stated that they would prefer to develop the field by using a concrete Gravity-Based Structure (GBS). IntroductionHibernia is located in an environmental climate much more severe than that of any previously developed oil field. The wind and wave conditions are similar to those of the North Sea, but unlike the North Sea, any structure on the Grand Banks would have to contend with ice floes and icebergs. Decisions had to be made on whether fixed structures could be put in place that would withstand the pressures of the ice and the impact of an iceberg, or whether structures that could be removed when such impacts were imminent would be used.Early studies in 1981, determined that it was possible to build a concrete Gravity-Based Structure which could withstand the impact of the largest icebergs that are anticipated to float in that area of the banks.Additional studies increased the knowledge of icebergs: their patterns and size, and verified the original conclusions that Concrete Gravity-Based platforms would provide a practical solution."

"IntroductionIn 1980, Fording Coal Limited started conceptual planning studies which led to major changes in the long-range mining plan at their Fording River Operations. These new plans have been completed and are now in operation.To assist personnel in a timely completion of this major revision to the long-range plan, existing in-house drill hole data base and scheduling systems were used and a computerized Mine Modelling and Planning System was purchased. With these tools, plan s were developed which led to completion of initial access to the peak of Eagle Mountain and the start of mining operations in March 1983. As mining area s open up and new geo logical data is obtained, detailed plan s are being extended and revised.With the geology and mine plan s on line, this work can now be done with less effort and plans ca n be adapted to provide flexibility in mining operations. Changes in market conditions can be accommodated by moving mining operations into different seams for different coal types. The computer systems are used to revise pit designs and schedules accordingly."
