The mechanism by which stratiform ore deposits of PGE (platinum-group elements) are laid down in ultrama?c igneous complexes is not completely clear. Early studies by the author and coworkers on numerical analyses of the convective cooling of low-Rayleigh-number magma chambers examined the effect of suspended crystal load on ?uid density, and raised the possibility that the growth of the suspended crystal load during cooling could split a magma chamber into several convecting layers. The lower layers would have a higher content of refractory phases than the upper layers, which would consist of more evolved melt. This paper considers numerical modelling, as well as theoretical and experimental work in other ?elds dealing with suspended loads in ?uids. The calculations, which are based on the physics of convecting magmas, yield quantitative relationships consistent with the observation that economically interesting stratiform PGE deposits are restricted to large magma bodies, and also yield estimation of the depth in a magma chamber at which certain grades of mineralization may occur.

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a holistic environmental assessment tool that allows the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs, and potential environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its life cycle, from cradle to grave (i.e., from resource extraction and transformation to final disposal, including production and use stages). The relevance of LCA for the mining industry is twofold. First, the mining industry has a role in providing the LCA community the data that allows subsequent evaluations of the life cycle environmental impacts of primary materials such as metals, as well as the environmental comparison of the downstream products of the mining industry with other competing materials for specific uses. Second, the mining industry can use LCA in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of its activities, identify their environmental hotspots and compare the impacts of available technical options. For example, the environmental impacts of different extractive and processing technology can be compared through the use of LCA. This latter use of LCA by the mining industry is less common. This paper discusses the use of LCA to compare sulphidic tailings management options. The paper also presents some of the LCA research challenges that still have to be addressed to increase the relevance of LCA results for the specific context of mining activities.

"This paper outlines the development and inplementation of functional training at the Thompson Mine of Inco Metals Company, Manitoba Division. This training is an extension of similar methods implemented throughout the company to meet safety and health and productivity objectives. It consists of the orientation to the mine, induction in the basic mining skills, and specific training in drilling and other skills in the mine. Initial results indicated a positive effect on the safety performance and proficiency of the mine workforce.IntroductionThe primary mining method at the Thompson Mine is mechanized cut and fill, with secondary recovery of pillars by undercut and fill . These methods require a workforce of about 900 hourly operating employees to obtain capacity production of 6500 tons of ore per day.Historically, turnover of mine employees has been high and large numbers of new recruits are introduced to the mine every year. These men are recruited primarily in Manitoba, but also from distant areas of Canada; most of the se people have no previous mining experience.Training has always been an important component of mine operations. Mine supervisors and experienced miners have committed an appreciable amount of time and effort to training these new recruits. As well, training efforts have been directed toward upgrading the skills of experienced workers.Recently, a growing awareness of the significance of this training effort and its impact on accident frequency, productivity, turnover and other important parameters of the mine operation has led to a review of training methods. The training program described in this paper has resulted from this review."

Abstract- Since the 1957 initiation of deposition of mill tailings at the Heath Steele mine, New Brunswick, periodic detailed studies of the tailings geochemistry and mineralogy have been con­ ducted, thereby providing a unique opportunity to examine the geochernical evolution of a sulfide- rich mine-tailings impoundment. When deposited, the tailings contained about 85 wt% sulfide minerals, 1 wt% to 3 wt% carbonate minerals, and 12 wt% to 14 wt% aluminosilicate minerals. Mineralogical examination of samples of the tailings from deep in the impoundment indicates that little oxidation occurred prior to tailings deposition. The mill process-water deposited with the tailings was neutral to slightly basic and contained low concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and As. Sampling of the tailings five years after deposition indicated that sulfide-oxidation reactions, occurring near the tailings surface, had decreased the tailings-water pH and increased the concentrations of Fe, SOi-, Cu, Zn and Pb (up to 10 000 mg/L, 25 000 mg/L, 2.5 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 4.5 mg/L, respectively) . In 1975, ten years after decommissioning, the tailings could be divided into three zones: an upper oxidation zone in which sulfide oxidation is actively occurring, a hardpan layer, 15 cm to 20 cm thick, composed of tailings cemented by secondary Fe minerals, and an underlying reduction zone in which the tailings are relatively tinoxidized (Boorman and Watson, 1976). Chemical analyses indicated the presence of low-pH waters containing very high concentrations of SO42- , Fe, and other metals (up to 63 600 mg/L SO42-, 28 600 mg/L Fe, 10 mg/L Pb, 600 mg/L Cu and 4000 mg/L Zn), suggesting that there was a period of intense sulfide oxidation between five and ten years after tailings deposition. More recent sampling, conducted some 20 years after the end of tailings deposition, indicates that relatively little change has occurred in the last ten years, thereby suggesting that the hardpan layer has provided an impediment to the downward movement of dissolved constituents . Analyses of the tailings solids show increased accumulations of many metals at or near the depth of the hardpan layer. Evaluations of the long-term evolution of the tailings can be enhanced by comparison of descriptions of the tailings with descriptions of the gossan that overlay the massive­ sulfide orebody prior to mining. At Heath Steele, this comparison suggests that many of the mechanisms controlling the distribution of metals in the tailings will probably persist over geologic time.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.

"Les mineralisation d'or des gîtes de la SOQUEM - Silver Stack dans is canton Bousquet se situent dans une bands de roches pyroclastiques asides du groupe de Blake River, d'âge archéen, dans le même horizon géologique que lee gites aurifères de Thompson Bousquet et Dumagarni situés plus a rest. La propriété a été explores anterieurement a maintes reprises depuis les années 1930, parfois jusqu'aux travaux souterrains, notamment par les groupes Mooshla, Warrenmac et Westwood Cadillac ainsi que par Silver Stack Mines.Ces zones auriferes se situent a l'intérieur de larges halos (jusqu'à 1,000 m x 400 in) de pyrite disséminée (2-5%) dans des tufs a lapilli et des agglomerate acides montrant des concentrations locales de pyrite. La zone 1, découverte en vérifiant par sondage une anomalie E.M., coincide avec une de ces concentrations de pyrite et la teneur en or est ici proportionnelle a la pyrite. Ce secteur se distingue par l'intensité de l'altération en séricite. La zone 2, qui s'étend sur près de 600 m, se situe dans un agglomérat acids, avec une faible teneur en pyrite, et montre de fines veinules de quartz-carbonate.Du point de vue géophysique, aucune methods ne donne des résultats probants: la polarisation provoquée montre de tree grandee anomalies correspondant aux halos de pyrite, tandis que lee concentrations de pyrite détectées par les méthodes E.M. (VLF ou EMH) sont loin d'être toutes aurifères. Les relevés magnétiques aident a établir la structure la où un certain contraste de susceptibilité magnétique est present. Les essais minéralurgiques préliminaires indiquent que la concentration de Bette mineralisation aurifère ne présentera pas de problems majeur."

We have read, with great interest, Mr. Crocker's article on "Recent Trends in Autogenous Grinding," published in the October issue of The Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin. Referring to our paper, "Two-Stage Autogenous Grinding Investigations at Outokumpu," we can now report that last August we changed to this method at the Keretti concentrator. Prior to the conversion, the Keretti plant (see flow-sheet, Figure 1) had two primary rod mills, 6 ft. in diameter and 12ft. in length, in open circuit, followed by four secondary 9-by 12-ft. pebble grate mills in closed circuit with rake classifiers. Last summer, wl1en the Since August, grinding has been successfully carried out autogenously in two stages, with two mills being employed in the primary stage and four in the secondary. The size of the pebbles in the secondary mills is about the same as earlier -l V: i to 3 inches (Figures 4 and 5). Building block cave operations involves significant commitments to capital and time before arriving at completion or full scale production. The focus of the mine planners is habitually to minimize the upfront capital and achieve target development rates and construction dates. However, management of the construction of block cave projects requires understanding of the strategic/tactical decisions that the project planners can take to increase the value of the project and cope with schedule risks. As block cave projects involve development of vertical and lateral access to the underground footprint and ore body, more attention to uncertainties is required as most of those projects need to confront delays leading to a decrease in value. The standard process of development and construction scheduling is often not planned with provisions to realise uncertainties in the construction phase. Uncertainties and risks such as poor ground conditions and equipment breakdowns are the primary reasons for schedule slippage. As a result most of these projects experience delays. In order to mitigate risk to the project schedule, we centre our attention on increasing the value of the project by spending more money upfront and improving the schedule rather than focus on minimizing the upfront capital. Scenario-based simulations along with project appraisal methods hold great promise to address those challenges and enable mine planners to make better decision and enhancing project value. This paper will present a hybrid simulation based approach to model the process of development and construction based on discrete event (DES) and continuous based simulations (CBS). Such simulations will be conducted for scheduling multiple development headings (Apex, undercut, extraction, and haulage levels). Two scenarios are utilized to investigate the impact of risks on schedule and how flexibility in construction can be incorporated to minimize delays: (1) The bench mark scenario is created based on actual data from an existing case study. (2) The flexible scenario is an alternative way to use primary production infrastructure (Ore Handling System) including conveyer drifts, conveyer belt, and a gyratory crusher in the construction process and that requires the system to be in place before starting lateral development in the footprint. As a result, a truck-load system versus a conveying system will be studied to observe the gain in construction speed and to estimate the premium cost for mucking rock from headings and drawbells and transporting it to surface. Such strategic flexibility would be part of the original budget to make the tactical flexibility available during construction. Continuous cash flow models are used to evaluate and compare the scenarios. This study is an example of how new techniques in planning can be used to support decision-making processes in block cave design.

SEPARATION of the oil from the bituminons sands of the Athabaska area of Alberta has been a subject of study by the Research Council of Alberta. The results of the study have been published in the Annual Reports of the Council. However, the last Annual Report in which there is mention of bituminons sand separation is that for 1934. The attention that is being directed toward the bituminons sands at the present time calls for an up-to-date summary of the work of the Research Council of Alberta on the hot-water separation process. STATEMENT OF FUNDAMENTALS OF HOT-WATER PROCESS Studies of the hot-water separation process have been largely empirical in nature. The objective sought has been a complete recovery of oil from the sand in the form of a separated oil which, itself, is free from mineral matter. Various procedures have been tried in the hope of attaining this objective and a very considerable mass of observations and background of experience have been acquired. lt is rime that a theory for hot-water separation should commence to emerge. As a start toward the formulation of such a theory, the statements which follow regarding the constitution of bituminons sand and its reactions with water and air are presented. It is not pretended that they are entirely correct, but it is believed that they lie not far from the truth. (1) Bituminons sand is an aggregate of sand, clay, oil, and water. The sand consists mainly of quartz particles of 100 ta 200 mesh size and smaller, but also of particles of other minerais including mica, rutile, ilmenite, tour-maline, zircon, spinel, garnet, pyrite, and lignite. Clay occurs interbedded with the bituminons sand, of which, also, it is a constituent. lronstone nodules of all sizes up to eight inches in diameter are likely to be present in the bituminons sand beds. The oil is viscous, naphthenic, and of a specific gravity slightly greater than that of water. The oil content ranges up to, and sometimes even exceeds, 17 per cent by weight. Rich bituminons sand from beds not invaded by water has a water content of 3 to 5 per cent by weight. The water is probably present as a film around the sand particles. The oil surrounds the moist sand grains as an envelope. (2) Water wets quartz and other siliceous minerals more readily than does mineral oil. Consequently, water tends to displace the oil film surrounding the quartz and other siliceous particles when the bituminons sand is mixed with water. Whether the oil is completely displaced depends on the properties of the water. That is to say, the materials dissolved or suspended in the water modify its wetting properties.

Good mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets is required to avoid breakage and excessive deformation during their handling and further processing. However, green balls with good resistance to handling are often too plastic, which impacts the bed permeability in induration furnaces. Measurements of plasticity, bed void fraction and green ball sphericity as well as bed permeability were carried out on various samples of green iron ore pellets having different mechanical strength. Results show that bed void fraction, sphericity and permeability all depend, to some extent, upon green ball mechanical strength (plasticity). Understanding and controlling the mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets would then help to maximize both the productivity of the induration process as well as the quality of fired pellets through a more stable firing process. Results of research work carried out at COREM, with the objective of improving green ball characterization methods, are presented in this paper.

ABSTRACT The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment recognizes the importance of environmental protection as an important contributor to Saskatchewan’s economy, with the environmental performance of industry closely monitored. Unfortunately, environmental regulation is often accompanied by significant process that does not always add value to environmental protection activities. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has embarked on a visionary restructuring of its regulatory framework from conventional command and control regulation to a results-based regulatory framework. This new regulatory framework will provide for establishing clear environmental protection and resource management objectives; streamlining the environmental acts and regulations; developing an environmental code of practice; relying on qualified persons; enhancing compliance and enforcement tools; eliminating of many permits; and developing greater certainty in environmental assessment decisions. Results-based regulation promises to deliver enhanced environmental protection with less process. The uranium industry in Saskatchewan will be used as an example of the potential effects of results-based regulation.

"Significant increases in mill liner life and plant availability can be achieved by following guidelines that have evolved from over twenty years of practical experience with autogenous grinding (A0) and semi-autogenous grinding (SA0) mills. A0 and SA0 mill liner functions, performance criteria, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures are reviewed. Operating practices that can lead to accelerated wear and breakage are discussed.IntroductionEfforts to improve the performance of liners for autogenous grinding (AG) and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills began as soon as the modern, large-diameter versions of these comminution machines were first intalled in commercial plants twenty years ago . While concentrators with conventional circuits were typically running at 95010 or better mill availability, many of the new autogenous and semi-autogenous circuits were struggling to achieve 80% availability. Liner maintenance, which involves not only material and labour costs but also loss of production, was quickly identified as one of the major reasons for downtime.Today, liner designs and materials have evolved to the point where virtually maintenance-free liner life of two to three years is possible in autogenous mills and one year in the more severe operating conditions encountered in semi-autogenous mills. Of concern, however, is that hard-won lessons from the past sometimes seem to be forgotten or ignored during the design of new mills and the operation of existing mills. As liner suppliers, we are often confronted with performance problems that could have been avoided by applying well-publicized guidelines for liner design and materials selection.This paper provides an overview of AG and SAG mill liner functions, criteria for evaluating performance, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures. Also, operating conditions that can lead to accelerated wear and liner breakage are discussed in detail."

Polypropylene (PP) and its composites have an increasing use in automobile and domestic industries. Since the published results on strain rate effect on yield behavior do not match, and there is a high attention paid for effect of nanometeric fillers on deformation behavior of composites, in this research the strain rate effect on yield behavior of PP and the effect of nanometeric fillers on deformation behavior of PP have been studied. Microscopic observations and tensile tests in different strain rates on neat PP samples and on samples filled with 5, 10 and 15 %wt have been used. A dramatic change in behavior for the modulus and post-yield slope curves when the strain rate is between 0.0433-0.05 s-1 has been observed. Microscopic observations on PP indicate a change in deformation mechanism from shear yield to crazing at the same strain rate that the change in behavior of curves occurs. It has been observed that in PP nanocomposites with higher amount of calcium carbonate, fracture in early stages of deformation occurs in lower strain rates. In other words for a fixed stain rate there is a critical filler percentage such that if the filler percentage is higher then early-stage fracture will occur. Similarly for a fixed filler percentage there is a critical strain rate and in higher strain rates early fracture will occur. The critical stain rate will decrease as the filler percentage increases and vice versa.

"Recent fluid inclusion and stable isotopic studies in the Bousquet mining district have identified spatial and temporal trends in mineralization temperatures and isotopic compositions of vein forming fluids. These studies indicate that mineralizing temperatures were lower during sterile vein formation (T=200-300°C) than during auriferous vein formation (T = 300-400°C), and that 8 80 values of minerals in sterile veins are lower by 1-3 %o than in associated auriferous veins. In addition to these small differences in 8 80 within individual mineralized zones, a trend of increasing 8 80 values of vein minerals is identified from west to east across the district, with 8 80 of vein minerals increasing by4-6%o. Quantitative evaluation of potential causes of the observed oxygen isotopic shifts suggests that the best explanation for these trends is the derivation of the mineralizing fluids from an isotopically inhomogeneous terrain in which the fluid isotopic compositions are controlled by the isotopic compositions of the host lithologies due to high rock/water ratios in these source terrains. This inhomogeneous source terrain is interpreted as consisting of the Blake River Group volcanics (low 8 80 component) and the adjoining Kewagama and Cadillac Group sediments (high 8 80 component).The genesis of the hydrothermal fluids is attributed to crustal heating during metamorphism, with the fluids representing metamorphic dewatering products and/or fluids incorporated during deposition and burial of the host lithologies. Ductile deformation of the fluid source regions impeded fluid migration during metamorphism; the ultimate release of the mineralizing fluids is attributed to the penetration to depth of vertical structures (fault and shear zones) during brittle deformation of the crust under waning metamorphic conditions. Release of fluids caused by this puncturing of the closed hydrologic source regime produced a localized zone of lowered pressure, drawing fluids from adjacent lithologies toward the fault zones, feeding further hydrothermal fluid upwelling. Au mineralization resulted from chemical processes related to cooling of the hydrothermal fluids and/or interaction with lithologies encountered during fluid migration; the level of crust at which Au deposition occurred likely migrated upward with the thermal anomaly caused by hydrothermal fluid upwelling, eventually reaching the level of current exploitation. Cessation of fluid flow along the vertical structures is attributed to inadequate recharge of the hydrothermal systems as fluid contents were depleted in the lithologies proximal to the vertical structures and/or sealing of the structures by mineral deposition."

Bien que la production de fibres d'amiante ait diminue de J 365 779 ten /979 a que!que 700 000 ten 1983, le Quebec n'en demeure pas mains une des principa/es sources d'approvisionnement mondial de ce mineral, la valeur des exportations quebecoises ayant ete de l'ordre de 315 millions de dollars en 1983. Dans la presente contribution, nous passons en revue que!ques-unes des notions mineralogiques sur l'amiante, depuis l'etymologie du mot et les proprietes physico-chimiques du mineral, jusqu'd ses principales utilisations commercia/es et industrielles. Un des deux objectifs principaux de noire article est de definir brievement le contexte geologique regional, la lithologie et /'age des roches ultramafiques serpentinisees et de decrire les principales caracteristiques des gftes de chrysotile qu'elles renferment et qui furent exploites a date dans /es Appa/aches du sud quebecois. Nous concluons en dressant un tableau synoptique de la metallogenie et en soulignant le role preponderant qu 'ont joue /es mouvements tectoniques majeurs, a la jonction des plaques et au sein des feuillets et copeaux de la croute oceanique (lithosphere et manteau superieur), sur la genese des gftes de chrysotile dans les roches ultramafiques serpentinisees, et tout particu!ierement dans celles associees aux series ophiolitiques du Paleozaique inf erieur.
