Data on world-wide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs are collected annually by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists' Geo-physical Activity Committee as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data are obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations which are known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections; namely, ground methods, airborne methods and research. The data compiled from the questionnaires show that world-wide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1967 with total expenditures of (U .S.) $32,323,240. This was divided as follows: ground methods, $18,106,785; airborne methods, $10,-123,405; and research, $4,093,050. For the ground methods, most money was spent on the induced polarization technique ($5,681,780); electromagne-tic methods were second in reported expenditures ($2,010,900). The total reported geophysical line mileage flown was 1,275,072 line miles, with aeromagnetic surveying being the most popular airborne method. The total amount spent on aeromagnetic surveys was $5,832,564 for 895,420 line miles. This gives an average cost of (U.S.)$6.50 per line mile.

The identification of potential accidents on construction sites has been a major concern in the construction industry and it needs a proactive safety plan to reduce the risk of accidents. There are no efficient methods for checking if safety measures are taken properly on construction sites. Consequently, workers on site are not given enough awareness about dangerous areas. In addition, construction sites are dynamic and on-site situations are changing in terms of permanent and temporary structures and facilities. This information can be represented using Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper proposes the integration of BIM and safety risk analysis by considering the risk levels associated with the work spaces of different construction tasks. Work spaces are generated in a BIM model according to the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) of the project, reference objects in the BIM, and the schedule and resources of the task. Each work space is assigned to one or more tasks or functions, e.g., work spaces for specific tasks, shared spaces (paths), storage spaces, or spaces prohibited to workers. The assignment of work spaces is based on the workers, equipment and materials involved in the task. All the work spaces are associated with a specific duration according to the schedule of the project. Then risk evaluation of the construction site is applied in order to evaluate safety risks based on their severity and the degree of exposure of workers. For example, work spaces for storing hazard materials and for heavy construction equipment have higher risks than other work spaces. The results of the risk evaluation can be visualized in a 4D BIM model.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing has attracted considerable public and industry attention because of the significant quantities of energy consumption involved. In this context the question of what are worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements ought to be of the highest priority. It is however worth taking a step back to avoid falling in the trap of taking preconceived ideas that have been reiterated repeatedly before as gospel. The aim of this paper is to highlight areas where new or alternative approaches could potentially be the better way forward. Some may come as a surprise to conventional industry thinking. Ultimately any such solutions are attractive to practitioners not just in an environmental but also in an economic sense, and hence should be targeted through applied research and development efforts. This paper highlights key aspects of each group of opportunities and some of the individual approaches to provide an overview of the current status quo.MINING INDUSTRY POWER UTILISATION – WHERE IS THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK?The question of where is the biggest bang for the buck when trying to determine worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements has not always been reported on broadly enough, typically because industry practitioners operate in specific areas of expertise and comfort zone. Looking beyond the familiar doesn’t always come easy. Any technology or methodology consideration to address energy efficiency needs to take into account the context of alternative opportunities of superior value or risks not achieving desired uptake. The following sub-chapters have been ordered by magnitude of improvement potential as best as is possible, starting with the biggest first, and the smallest last. Some may be a surprise relative to conventional mining industry thinking."

"Conventional design criteria assume that the fracture strength of a structural material exceeds its yield strength. Fracture below the design load is not expected, y et many structures have failed in this way. The causes of the fractures are almost always discontinuities such as cracks and welding defects. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM or simply 'fracture mechanics') provides an analytical framework for assessing the influence of sharp defects on the load-bearing capability of a structure. Fracture mechanics techniques have reached the point of acceptance by ASME Design Codes for nuclear components, and ASTM Standards now include well-defined rules for measuring fracture toughness. Starting with a simple equation which relates applied stress and crack size, the influence of the material's thickness and yield strength can be calculated. Thus, the size of defect which will cause failure under the applied stress may be determined. Armed with this information, the metallurgist can assess the safety of a structure from the viewpoints of non-destructive testing standards, construction standards and conditions of operation throughout its service life."

The cable belt conveyor installation at Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., has the greatest one-stage vertical fall of any conveyor installed overland in Canada. Since the late summer of 1961, this conveyor has carried more than 5,000,000 tons of copper ore from open pit to concentrator site. When the conveyor is loaded, the drive motor acts as an induction generator, delivering power to an external circuit. This paper covers the selection, the operation, the performance statistics, and the installation and operating costs of this conveyor system. Introduction T HE Craigmont mine is located in the south-western interior region of the Province of British Columbia, approximately 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. A moderate climate, good roads, service by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, power from the British Columbia Hydro Authority, gas from the nearby main line of the Inland Natural Gas Company and close proximity to the village of Merritt provide a favourable location for this mining operation. "In June, 2018 Lalor Mine experienced a catastrophic blade failure of its No. 2 main exhaust fan. Over the following weeks several key changes were made to the auxiliary ventilation system to allow for continued production while the exhaust fans were repaired. Issues encountered during the period of reduced ventilation, and how they were addressed, are analyzed. The suspected causes of the exhaust fan blade failure and how risk was mitigated during the reconstruction are discussed. Key findings and lessons learned are summarized.INTRODUCTIONLalor Mine, owned and operated by Hudbay is an underground zinc, gold, and copper mine located in northern Manitoba. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1090 metres below surface and is ventilated using a push-pull system. The mine exhausts through the main exhaust raise; equipped with two, 2,500 HP fans and upcasts through a portal located at the neighboring mine, Chisel North. Air is supplied to Lalor Mine through four intake fans: The Production Shaft Downcast (two, 250 HP), Lalor Downcast (one, 400 HP), and Chisel Downcast (one, 600 HP) fans (Figure 1). In June 2018, Lalor was scheduled to produce approximately 4,000 tpd.On June 20, 2018 at 2:52 pm Lalor Mine experienced a fault on the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for Exhaust Fan No. 1. Time would be needed to complete the necessary repairs. The No. 2 exhaust fan was ramped up from 525 rpm to 800 rpm, 90% of its capacity, in order to maintain underground ventilation. At 4:46 pm, approximately two hours after the rpm was increased, exhaust fan No. 2 experienced a catastrophic blade failure. The forces from the blade failure resulted in the top half of the fan housing being thrown 50 metres from where it was installed; with several large sections of fan blade being thrown further (Figure 2)."

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man's first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less 'Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man's inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

THE KIDD CREEK MINE is located within the Abitibi greenstone belt, near its west end, in an area known as the Porcupine mining camp (Fig. 5). The Abitibi belt, long known for its many major gold and base metal deposits, is the largest Archean (early Precambrian) greenstone belt within the Canadian Shield. In the Porcupine area, the greenstone belt is composed principally of Keewatin (older Archean) basic to intermediate volcanics, with subordinate felsic volcanics developed• locally. Greywacke, mainly of volcanic derivation, occurs associated with and overlying these volcanics. Timiskaming (younger Archean) sediments, principally coarse clastics, unconformably overlie the Keewatin volcanics and sediments. The reader is referred to Goodwin and Ridler (1970) •r. for a more comprehensive description of the Abitibi belt.

"The copper concentrate used in this study is produced by flotation of a black shale organic rich ore. This resource is a carbonate-rich, polymineral concentrate. In the last 5-6 years, ore characteristics changed and the concentrate grades degraded. This study evaluated bioleaching of the concentrate in stirred tank reactors as an alternative to the pyrometallurgical technology that is currently applied, and which may no longer be feasible in future given the concentrate chemistry.The first part of the study focused on testing non-traditional operating conditions during continuous bioleaching experiments: high solids concentration (> 20% solids), reduced agitation and aeration rates. For the same residence time, bioleaching performance at high solids loading (25%) was the same as that reached during previous bioleaching experiments at 15% solids. No mixing or microbial issues were encountered. The bacterial consortium used in the experiments demonstrated a high copper tolerance.The second part of the study was devoted to technology development for metal recovery from copper bearing solutions obtained during bioleaching experiments. Due to the high copper concentration of the leachate, solvent extraction prior to electrowinning was not necessary. After iron removal, high quality copper cathodes (morphology and composition) were obtained from the PLS by electrowinning."

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). La valeur de la PIV a été mesurée à diverses positions spatiales le long du cyclone. "In 1991/1992, INCO undertook a successful R&D program aimed at extending the lining lives of the top blown rotary converters (TBRCs)at its Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) and the electric furnace at INMETCO. At the laboratory scale, this effort was divided into three phases. In the first part, mineralogical work was performed on six refractories that were either currently being used to line these vessels or were considered suitable alternatives. In the second part, this mineralogical knowledge was used to help determine the compositions of slags that would not corrode the bricks at the operating temperature (1600°C) of the above furnaces. Finally, several important properties of the six refractories were measured to complete their evaluation as candidate linings. This paper reports the results of all three phases of the laboratory scale R&D work.The mineralogical work showed that rebonded fused grain magnesite-chrome (RFG-MC) bricks consist principally of periclase with minor amounts of free chromite and trace quantities of silicates monticellite and sometimes olivine. The bricks are principally held together by periclase-periclase direct bonding. Of note, the bulk of the chromite exists as exsolved precipitated blebs within the periclase grains. These likely redissolve at high temperature.Slags on the periclase liquidus coexist stably with these refractories. Examples are presented using CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags at~1600°C.Finally, the two refractories manufactured using close to 100% fused grain material generally outperformed the others in terms of physical properties and certainly were superior in their resistance to slag penetration damage."

The history of the flotation process, as applied to the practical field of ore dressing, dates back somewhat less than twenty years; yet this fact may be overlooked in view of the present universal dependence on this process in the concentration of almost all classes of ore. It is therefore interesting to recall that Britannia was the scene of some of the earliest experiments with flotation on a commercial scale. In 1911, sixteen years ago, an Elmore vacuum machine was operated for several months with encouraging results. In 1913, some time before flotation was very generally adopted elsewhere, a Minerals Separation plant, capable of treating 600 tons daily, was operating successfully at Britannia. Considering how little was known of the theory and practice of flotation at that time, the recovery was remarkably good, but it was not until the present mill was completed in 1923 that any attempt was made to raise the concentrate grade by differential flotation, or, in other words, to float the chalcopyrite while rejecting the then worthless pyrite with the tailings. The first ore passed through the present concentrator in March, 1923. As originally designed, the rated capacity was for 2,000-2,500 tons, but this has been increased year by year, until at the present time 4,000 tons daily can be treated economically. During the first few months of operation the concentrate grade averaged only 10-11 per cent Cu, but by the end of 1923 this had been raised to over 20 per cent, due to the elimination of the pyrite by differential flotation. In 1923 the tailings averaged approximately 0.25 per cent Cu, but also in the matter of recovery a considerable improvement has been effected, for during the year 1926 an average tailing of 0.15 per cent Cu was maintained.

Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

The hard roof in underground coal mines is generally considered as a main cause that induces disasters in working faces and entries, such as rock burst and windblast. Hydraulic fracturing technology is an effective approach to weaken hard roof to reduce ground pressure and control rock burst. The state and achievements associated with hydraulic fracturing technology applied in Chinese coal mines are summarized in this paper. Theories related to hydraulic fracturing are of the essence in fracture design to determine the fracture initiation and propagation pressure and predict the geometry and the characteristics of hydraulically induced fractures. Initially, theory of elasticity was employed to determine the breakdown pressure for a vertical borehole where the rock medium is assumed to be elastic. However, porosity and pore fluid have an influence on the borehole breakdown pressure, and then the poroelasticity theory was applied. Arbitrary deviated boreholes in practice are rather common and the maximum tensile stress criterion was employed to determine borehole breakdown pressure. The effect of natural crack in the rock medium on the initiation pressure has been taken into consideration through fracture mechanics. Meanwhile, considerable achievements have been made on hydraulic fracturing tools and equipment, and a set of mature hydraulic fracturing technologies for hard roof control are available. Some comprehensive investigations on the hydraulic fracturing for hard roof weakening are presented, and successful field applications in the Jincheng and Luan coal mining districts are introduced. Finally, the unsolved problems related to hydraulic fracturing are also put forward.

The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

"Abstract - The coalbed methane industry has become a prominent source of domestic natural gas, with its technology having evolved over the past 30 years. Whereas most coalbed methane wells are able to produce without major interruption over their economic lives, wells operating in an underground mining area are subject to being mined-through. If mine-through occurs, the productivity of the well is at least compromised, and may even be terminated. The economic consequences of mine-through may be relatively simple if mineral ownership and extraction rights are common for the coal and coalbed methane. However, if ownership is not common and a superior coalbed methane lease exists, the coalbed methane ownership must be compensated for lost production caused by mine-through. This paper presents a relatively straightforward method to calculate the value of the lost production caused by the mine-through. It uses technology from mining and petroleum engineering, as well as simple economics and financial management techniques.Sommaire - L’industrie de la production de méthane houiller est aujourd’hui une source importante de gaz naturel domestique dont la technologie a considérablement évolué au cours des trente dernières années. Bien que la plupart des puits de méthane houiller peuvent être mis en production durant l’entièreté de leur vie utile sans interruption majeure, les puits implantés en périphérie de mines souterraines sont sujets à être recoupés par ces dernières. Un tel recoupement peut compromettre, ou même mettre fin à la production d'un tel puits. Les conséquences économiques du recoupement par une mine souterraine peuvent être relativement simples quand les droits miniers et les droits d’extraction sont détenus en commun pour le charbon et le méthane houiller. Si toutefois ces droits ne sont pas détenus en commun et qu’il y a eu octroi d’une concession de méthane houiller de qualité supérieure, les détenteurs du méthane houiller doivent être compensés pour la perte de production résultant du recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cet article présente une méthode relativement simple pour calculer la valeur des pertes de production suite au recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cette méthode fait appel aux technologies de l’industrie minière et pétrolière ainsi qu’à des techniques simples d’économie et de gestion financière."

In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements.
