"Long distance slurry pipeline systems have been successfully trans-porting steam coal, iron concentrates, copper concentrates and limestone for an aggregate of nearly 60 years and nearly three billion ton-miles annually. A phosphate concentrate pipeline is nearing start-up and systems for coking coal, lead/zinc concentrates and fly ash are planned. The solids pipeline concept, first patented in the early 1900's and commercialized in the 1950's, is now a proven technology providing an economic, environmentally pleasing and safe method for long distance bulk transport.The challenge for larger tonnage and longer distance movements of solids, for traversing increasingly rugged terrain in grass roots mineral developments, for transporting untried materials and for shipping more economic forms of proven materials still remains. This has necessitated continued refinements and optimization of the technology. The economic and environmental incentives for slurry pipelines when compared to other transport alternatives has justified substantial activity in this area. The scope of planned systems in coal, iron and other minerals is indicative of the firm place slurry pipelines will have in worldwide mineral development.In this presentation, the state-of-the-art in long distance slurry pipelines is reviewed with a focus on major systems of interest to the mineral processing industry. An overview of new developments in the application of this concept is presented, and finally, a projection of the future of pipelines in mineral development both worldwide and in Canada is discussed."

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) hot dust-laden is cooled in a waste heat boiler (WHB) and then dedusted in electrostatic precipitators (ESP’s) before being treated, together with the Peirce Smith Converters off-gases, in the sulfuric acid plants for SO2 removal. FSF dust is sulfated by SO2 and O2 in the WHB. Typically, 70% of the dust from the FSF drops in the WHB while the remainder is caught in the ESPs. The collected dust is recycled to the FSF for Cu recovery. Some smelters have developed hydrometallurgical treatments to recover Cu from the dust; impurities, such as As and Bi, are bled as leach plant residues. This paper presents a study (laboratory scale), of leaching the FSF dust, generated in Atlantic Copper Smelter using the weak acid bleed from the gas scrubbing/cooling section (GSCS) of sulfuric acid plants. Leaching was performed with 0.5 mol L-1 sulfuric acid concentration, 60ºC, and a solid/liquid ratio 1/3. After leaching, H2O2 was used for arsenic and iron oxidation. pH was adjusted for precipitation of arsenic and iron as scorodite or as scorodite and arsenical jarosite. The precipitation was carried out at 95ºC during 3-6 h. Liquids after precipitation are suitable for subsequent treatments of electrolysis. INTRODUCTION The copper smelter dusts are usually recirculated totally or partially to the flash furnace. This practice increases the amount of impurities feeding the furnace. Some authors have developed processes for treatment of these materials for copper and zinc recovery and for arsenic, antimony and bismuth inertization. The processes for the treatment of copper smelter dusts can be pyrometallurgical (Yu, 1987; Carter, Vance, Aldridge, Zaw, & Khoe, 1994; Fu, Jiang &Wang, 2000), hydrometallurgical, or mixed processes (Yin et al, 1992; Mulale, Mwema, & Mashala, 1999; Gorai, Jana, & Khan, 2002). Hydrometallurgical processes have been extensively studied and, in some cases, applied to an industrial scale. The most important chemical reagent proposed for leaching the dusts has been sulfuric acid (Roman-Moguel, Plascencia, Pérez, & Garcia, 1995; Gabb, & Evans, 1997; Larouche, 2001; Morales, Cruells, Roca, & Bergó, 2010; Cáceres, Cruells, Morales, & Roca, 2012; Ecometales, 2013; Yang, Fu, Liu, Chen, & Zhang, 2017). Processes developed in alkaline media, and in some cases with the presence of sulfide, have also been carried out (Gabler, & Jones, 1988; Morales, Hevia, & Cifuentes, 2009; Alguacil, Garcia-Diaz, Lopez, Rodriguez, & Alonso, 2013), as well as by using a bioleaching process (Massinaie, Oliazadeh, & Seyed Bagheri, 2006; Bakhtiari, Atashi, Zivdar, Seyedbagheri, & Fazaelipoor, 2011).

"Ultrafine grinding of minerals has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years. Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The recent development of industrially proven and cost efficient technologies for ultrafine grinding has opened up another processing option for the treatment of finegrained metalliferous and refractory gold ores. The current commercial designs are variations of stirred mills used in the industrial minerals sector for the past 30 years. For the purposes of this paper ultrafine grinding is considered to be P80 of less than 15 microns.Attrition milling to fine grind sizes presents some challenging issues relating to scale-up including the dearth of information on the quantitative impact of feed and operating conditions, as well as the precise and accurate measurement of particle size distributions. Two examples from recent installations will be analyzed including Thalanga Copper and Century Zinc Mines. Both have diverse grind size targets for the SMD, yet both have realized significant metallurgical gains."

"Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metal-contaminated leachate generated when pyrite-bearing rocks are exposed to surface oxidizing conditions, is a serious environmental problem encountered after the closure of mines and mineral processing operations. In this study, we investigated the effects of soluble phases and metallic oxides, which are commonly found in strongly weathered pyritic wastes, on pyrite oxidation. Strongly weathered pyrite containing melanterite (FeSO4·7H2O) as the main soluble phase was obtained from Furikusa mine, Japan. The sample was washed using two methods to vary the relative amounts of melanterite in the sample. The effect of metallic oxides on pyrite oxidation was evaluated using ultrapure hematite suspensions. Our results showed that under acidic conditions, the effect of soluble salts on the oxidation of pyrite was stronger than hematite. More thorough washing of the sample resulted in the formation of an arsenic-bearing iron-oxyhydroxysulfate coating that minimized pyrite dissolution. This oxidized layer became relatively thicker and mechanically stronger when hematite was introduced after the more thorough removal of soluble salts. Characterization of this “coating” coupled with geochemical modeling suggest that it is most probably composed of two materials: schwertmannite and scorodite. Based on these results, a new approach to suppress pyrite oxidation by directly using iron-oxyhydroxysulfate as coating material is introduced.INTRODUCTION Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metals-contaminated leachate produced in closed/abandoned mine sites (Evangelou, 1995), mineral processing and coal cleaning tailings (Evangelou, 1995), and tunnel construction waste rocks (Tabelin and Igarashi, 2009, Tabelin et al., 2012), is one of the oldest and probably the most serious environmental problem of anthropogenic origin. This paper discusses how elemental analysis of conveyed bulk flows in real time using PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology has resulted in significant improvements in advancing plant control in mineral processing operations. Basis of operation of the PGNAA through belt, full stream, continuous, multi-elemental, real time analysis technology is explained. Capabilities and limitations in plant operating environments are discussed including comparison with other real time, online technologies through review of published information available for on-conveyor minerals applications. Case studies demonstrate benefits provided by this technology in two operating mines. An iron ore company had prior experience with the PGNAA analyser technology, implementing an early model in a minerals application in 2003 to develop confidence in its measurement performance and usefulness of the data. A number of analysers were subsequently included throughout the new plant design for extensive measurement and control of conveyed bulk flows, from conveying after mining through to rail load-out. A copper-gold company installed an analyser to address copper ore blending issues where an on-belt system was the only viable option for the degree of control required. Analyser suitability was evaluated through test work on site samples to determine customised multi-element precision guarantees for each application. Analyser results from normal operation are compared against laboratory analyses of multiple cross stream samples collected from conveyed flows to assess performance. Both projects discussed were able to realise benefits previously unattainable for plant quality control, surpassing capabilities of traditional technologies which were either unsuitable for measuring conveyed flows with adequate accuracy or in real time. Equipment payback within a few months was achieved for both sites. Through proven performance in these applications, the companies consider the technology an essential component in advanced plant control necessary in new process flow sheet designs, rather than an optimisation tool.

Sensor-based ore sorting technology is a growing area of interest due to lower-grade ore deposits and higher costs of processing, among other reasons. Among the sensors currently utilized in the particle sorting industry, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), as the only sensor with elemental analysis capabilities, has always attracted more attention. Currently, the bench-scale amenability tests for this sensor are performed using hand-held XRF analysers. However, this testing method overestimates the performance of the XRF sorter, and therefore, the results from these tests can be misleading and are often mispresented. The work presented here was conducted on a copper mine and investigates how the sensor’s sensitivity to copper deteriorates under different testing methods. This work compares and correlates the results of an Olympus hand-held XRF analyser, static, and dynamic sorter responses with the actual grades of the rocks. The results confirmed that, the sorter response was extremely prone to blind spots. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that although the static sorter’s responses were comparable in terms of rock identification to those of the hand-held XRF analyzer and assays, the accuracy of the dynamic sorter response deteriorated both as a function of grade of the rocks as well as the potential for blind spots. INTRODUCTION Sensor-based sorting technology has been gaining increasing attention even by larger mining corporations as ore grades decrease, deposits get deeper and therefore cost of mining and processing increases. There are various types of sensors that are currently being used in the particle sorting industry such as X-Ray Transmission (XRT), Color, Electromagnetic (EM), Near-Infrared (NIR) and others. However, none of the sensors are capable of identifying and quantifying particles by the elemental content, except for X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). XRF is a non-destructive, surficial analytical technique used to measure elemental composition of materials. X-ray fluorescence happens when a secondary x-ray (fluorescence) is released after a sample is bombarded by a primary x-ray source. From a sorting perspective, the most common and expected issues that are associated with XRF sorting are lower throughputs compared to other sensors due to particle presentation limitation as well as the need to wash the material before introducing to the sorter. However, one important issue that is mostly neglected is how the amenability tests are performed and how realistic the obtained results are. Current amenability test procedure utilises a handheld XRF analyser (such as an Olympus InnovX, as used in this work) on multiple, generally 4, sides of the rock and uses the average measured grade as a criterion for separation. While this is a widely accepted technique, it fails to consider some important factors such as exposure time and the distance between the sensor and the particle. These factors can significantly affect the sorting outcome.

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. Apart from a few sketches and incomplete maps, mainly topographical, and one or two detailed maps of placer-creeks, there is little information on the topography and geology of most of the country adjacent to the sections of the Alaska Highway in the Liard River area, particularly that part east of Kechika river. In 1943, the Geological Survey of Canada made a recon-naissance from Fort Nelson clown the river of that name to the Liard, thence up the latter to Hell Gate, and also up Beaver river for a distance of fifty miles. The whole of the area covered was found to be underlain by sedimentary rocks, not a single igneous dyke being seen. The British Columbia Department of Mines began reconnaissances near the highway both in and north of the drainage basin of Prophet and Muskwa rivers with a view to finding structures favourable for the accumulation of oil. In Liard River valley near the mouth of Smith river and at intervals from there clown to Devil' s Portage occur warm springs whose character and origin are not definitely' known, since they have not been investigated (21, p. 38A). Similar springs are said to occur at several localities over a broad belt extending from Muskwa river across the Liard to the Nahanni River country (26, p. 11). On Liard river below the mouth of Dease river, stratified sands, gravels, and clays of Pleistocene (?) age are constantly met with and in one or two places are underlain by sandy clays. The distribution of the latter, however, is very limited in the section cut by the river west of the Rocky mountains. The only range of these mountains that reaches the Liard is the high limestone ridge which approaches the mouth of Vents river from the southeast and then almost vanishes a few miles to the northwest of it (27, pp. 43-45). In general, the ranges of the Rockies in the area under consideration have been but little explored, but they are undoubtedly very largely sedimentary and, with the exception of some volcanics and intrusives on their western flanks, are probably almost entirely so. Unlike the high, deeply incised ranges in southern British Columbia, they dwindle in elevation north of Terminus mountain to low-wooded ridges separated by wide swampy valleys, and practically lose their identity between it and the Liard. The foothills, which, along the Liard, have a width of 38 miles (from near the mouth of Trout river to Hell Gate) are composed of a great series of alternating shales and sandstones, with some limestones, all folded closely together, which resemble those found in the foothills farther south (27, pp. 50, 19-20).

Abstract - The essential aims of additional borehole drilling are to improve the reliability of grade and tonnage estimates in each reserve class and to increase ore tonnages. The "GET" function presented in this paper considers strategies for achieving both of these goals simultaneously, and therefore is advantageous for selecting sites for additional boreholes. The "GET" function is either a linear or a non-linear product of three variables G, E, and T: f(G,E,T,) = G??E??T??where the values of any or all of the exponents ?, ?, and ??may differ from unity at the discretion of the user. G and E are the average estimated block grade and the average estimation error for ore blocks in one vertical column, and T is the compounded ore thickness within the column. To illustrate its utility, the GET function has been used for determination of the most advantageous sites for additional drilling in the Shah-Kuh Pb-Zn deposit in west central Iran.

The Mineral Industry of Canada in 1951 Continuance of the remarkable, successive increases in the value -of Canada's mineral production, chief basis of the nation's post-war expansion, was one of the highlights of Canadian development in 1951, when, according to the preliminary estimate is-sued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and reported in the BULLETIN for February, 1952, mineral output for the year reached a new high of $1,228 millions. This marked an increase of 17.5 percent over the previous year, which was the first in which the billion dollar mark had been reached, and an increase of 143.7 per cent over 1946, when production was valued at approximately $503 millions. While higher prices for the principal base metals accounted for a large part of the 1951 increase, quantity gains were made by copper, nickel, zinc, asbestos. lead, cement, and strikingly important. by petroleum, the value of which exceeded for the first time that of coal production. Gold was an exception to the general trend, being lower in both quantity and value than in 1950. For the first time nickel .came within $9 millions of surpassing-gold as the leading mineral product. Metals and Fuels The value of all metals, estimated at $733 millions, was 18.7 per cent more than in the previous year. Nickel advanced 11 per cent in volume and 34 per cent in value. Copper was up 2.4 per cent in quantity and 21 per cent in value, zinc rose 6.6 per cent in quantity and 35 per cent in value, and although the volume of lead produced was lower by 8 per cent, its value increased by 17 per cent. The tonnage of iron ore was 31 per cent higher than in 1950.

Based on commodity price increase of 300% between 2002 to 2013 [1] and increased cost ofcapital projects and operation, equipment failure, which in some cases causes complete shutdown of the operation, becomes a vital importance in mining and metallurgical plants. "A combination of oxidation and precipitation was used to eliminate cyanide from gold milling effluents. Preliminary laboratory work developed with both synthetic cyanide solutions and with industrial effluents indicated that ozone can easily destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (i.e. copper and zinc cyanide). In this case the reaction is quite fast and seems to be controlled by the mass transfer of ozone to the solution. Experimental results indicate that free cyanide and weak-acid dissociable cyanide in mill effluents can be reduced to less than 1 ppm. However, the iron-cyanide complexes proved to be quite resilient to destruction with ozone and they remained in the solution even after most of the free and weakly complexed cyanide was destroyed with ozone. These results were confirmed in a pilot trial developed at the Sphinx plant in northern Quebec.To deal with the problem presented by the presence of the iron complexes two different approaches were studied: use of a combination ozone-ultraviolet light oxidation, and the precipitation of iron-ferrocyanide complexes in the residual solution after ozonation. This last method proved quite promising since reduced the total cyanide levels of industrial solutions assaying as much as 250 ppm to less than 1 ppm of total cyanide. Control of the · pH of the solution was the key to obtain the precipitation of the iron complexes. The use of iron to precipitate cyanide complexes has the advantage of being less expensive and less toxic than copper (used by the Inco process)."

The current mining operations at Newmont Boddington Gold Mine (NBG) commenced in 2008, and commissioning of the processing plant started in the latter half of 2009. Metso Process Technology and Innovation were engaged to assist NBG with commissioning and project ramp-up through the implementation of a comprehensive ?Mine-to-Mill? Process Integration and Optimisation project. This methodology entailed extensive data collection which included drill and blast audits, ore characterisation, comprehensive comminution circuit surveys and review of operational data to assess the limitations within the current mining and processing operations. The results of these investigations have been used to define the operating base line of both the mining and processing areas and identify improvement opportunities. The use of modelling and simulations, utilising actual production data, has allowed for multiple scenarios to be evaluated, minimising the requirement for actual trials and thereby minimising impact on the operation. Improvements implemented to date include: the introduction of routine rock strength measurement for inclusion in block models, modifications to blast design improving ROM fragmentation and downstream comminution process performance, and changes to improve performance of secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Close cooperation between the mine and plant personnel is playing a significant role in overcoming the challenges presented to this operation and further improvements are targeted for the second full year of process plant operation.

Highland Valley Copper had to make some significant changes in the way it was working in order to counter the effects of ever-increasing costs and decreasing metal prices. A mine/mill optimization plan started in 1997 introduced new technologies and management approaches that resulted in a dramatic drop in cash breakeven costs. The changes involved employee training, added authority and responsibility for staff, better communications, and a consistent approach to setting and achieving property-wide goals. The net effect was to change the culture of the organization from one that was fragmented and focussed on local objectives to one that is cohesive and has common goals. These changes have allowed the mine to remain in business during a protracted period of low metal prices, and have positioned the mine favourably to benefit even more from any future increase in prices.
