"A hoisting plant design should satisfy two basic requirements:1. to provide the necessary materials handling capacity, including ventilation where applicable, while meeting the requirements of good practice and, as a minimum, government regulation; and2. to optimize the economics of the project. Selection of hoisting equipment to meet the first objective is a complex but logical engineering process. The necessary calculations of payloads, accelerations, speeds, rope strength, hoist size, and power requirements are very readily carried out on computers or programmable calculators. A variety of hoist options can be quickly examined to assess the effects of changes in design parameters.Meeting the second requirement involves balancing the costs of various hoist arrangements and shaft designs, together with the time cost effects of differing shaft sinking rates and potential advances to be gained by concurrent level development. The proposed mine layout is significant here, as is the possibility of future shaft deepening and/or production increase. The availability of used equipment may be significant, both as regards first cost and delivery time. The factors are interactive, with their relative effects .varying from project to project. This paper sets out the primary factors to be considered."

"Abstract -The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of Cu­ Pb-Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyrite­ chalcopyrite-arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to medium­ scale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofing of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Mato 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization ."

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. In addition, the clay fraction and a 30 g (-80 mesh) subsample from the same till sample, were analyzed for gold . The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

"Haulage costs, in most operations, represent a large portion of total cost. Quebec Cartier Mining Company came to the conclusion t hat an electric trolley assist providing more horsepower than available from dieselgenerator sets presented the best oppor tunity for improvement. Accordingly, a testing and development program was carried out which resulted in the design, installat ion and application of a practical system. This paper describes the development of the system, the equipment used as well as the actual operation. A projection is also made to indicate further improvement in productivity. A comparison is made of truck operating data before and after activation of the trolley assist system in order to determine its economic impact."

THE paper consists of four sections: (1) a discussion of early work; (2) presentation of the results of a chemical investigation of Falcon-bridge nickel-copper blast-furnace matte; (3) application of the results of this investigation to mattes in general; and ( 4) a summary of conclusions. All general discussion will be confined to the fundamental system of ferrous-cuprous sulphides (FeS-Cu2S). Nickel-, lead-, and zinc-bearing mattes will be treated as minor varieties of the parent system. DISCUSSION OF EARLY INVESTIGATIONS Matte investigations may be divided into three classes: first, those treating the sulphides as alloys-theoretical studies of the system FeS-Cu2S, such as those of Hofman (ll)t or Carpenter and Hayward (2); second, chemical research on mattes made under smelter conditions, such as that carried out by Hawley (3) or Avetision ( 4); third, combinations of the . above, such as the investigations of Gibb and Philp (5) or Fulton and Goodner (6). Much research in the first of these classes, including determinations of . freezing points and of data for structure-composition diagrams of the system FeS-Cu2S, was carried out in the period 1890-1910. LeChatelier and Ziegler (1, 13) proved that FeS, when heated alone above its melting point, dissociated in part, and Friedrich ( quoted by Fulton, 6) showed the same for Cu2S. The reactions may be expressed by the following equations: [xFeS yFe + yS (volatilized)+ (x -y)FeS xCu2S )'Cu+ yS ( vohtilized) + (x -)')Cu,S ] Sulphur is lost by volatilization, leaving a melt of metallic iron plus ferrous sulphide in the one case, and of metallic copper plus cuprous sulphide in the other. If the mixed sulphides are heated far above their melting points, there results either an iron-rich matte containing Fe-FeS-Cu2S or a copper-rich matte containing FeS-Cu2S3-Cu, depending on the relative amounts of each sulphide in the mixture.

"The paper formulates an evaluation procedure for examining the effects of location on the economics of developing mineral deposits. This methodology is applied to assess locational aspects of Nova Scotia's competitive position f or mine development relative to other Canadian regions and provinces. The appraisal concerns two representative mine development opportunities, a medium-size open-pit tungsten deposit, and a small underground gold deposit. The influence of regional economic conditions is initially assessed. Then, the consequences of taxation are isolated. Finally, the combined impact of regional and taxation conditions is examined. SettingThe economic potential of mining may be assessed in a number of ways. One approach, increasingly used for both corporate planning and government policy purposes, is to evaluate the competitive position of an actual or potential mineral producer in the international marketplace relative to other suppliers.Such examinations of competitive position vary from cost league comparisons of breakeven costs for operating mines, through the assessment of medium-term costs associated with developing new mine capacity, to long-term evaluations of the economics of mineral supply from the start of exploration. The complexity of the analysis increase s with the scope and timeframe of interest. Many factors are involved. One component of competitive position is the quality of the mineral resources available. Other key factors include existing technology, wage and salary rates, labour productivity, the cost of capital, infra structure requirements, distances from sources of materials supply an d to mineral markets, management attributes, organizational efficiency, government mineral policies (particularly taxation), and inflation and exchange rates. The paper fits within this competitive position framework.The variable economic conditions which exist within Canada have a direct bearing on the viability of mine development and, thereby, on mineral exploration potential. The paper examines locational aspects of Nova Scotia 's competitive position."

Since addressing the Institute a year ago on The Future of the Copper Industry (l), many things have happened, most of them bad. It has been a hard year for profits and prophets. It was, therefore, with consider-able perturbation that I accepted the gracious invitation of your Committee to reappear. On reviewing my remarks of a year ago, I. have wondered whether, under pressure of more important matters, the Committee had neglected to make a note of them, or whether they felt that further explanations from me were in order. In either event, I am glad that I am here and welcome the opportunity to make any contribution I can to a clearer understanding of the problems of copper to those concerned. The English-speaking nations own 80 per cent of the present world-production of the metal. Col. P. E. Barbour, Secretary of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and I recently completed an estimate of the known world resources of copper. We placed the figure, in round numbers, at 100,000,000 tons of metal. Of this amount, about one-third lies in the United States, one-third in the British Empire, and one-third in South America; and all but 4 per cent of this is owned by British Empire and United States capital. Our figures do not include any estimates for Russia, Japan, or Europe, on which there are no available data. It is true, consequently, that the British Empire and the United States are the ones concerned. It seems to me to be a matter of great importance to the world at large, and of even greater importance to those nations themselves, that the known sources of supply of this metal, so essential both in peace and war, rest so strongly in their hands. I cannot believe that in the long run they will neglect their responsibilities in the wise administration of these resources.

Introduction Situated in the district of South Lorrain, some 16 miles southeast of Cobalt, Ontario, and reached from that centre either by branch line of the T. & N. O. railway or by what, for a mining camp, is a reasonably good road, the Keeley mine, owned by the Keeley Silver Mines,' Ltd., has had its history recorded by C. W. Knight (1). Silver was first discovered in South Lorrain, in Woods' vein, on Keeley property, in 1907, and the Keeley mine has been described by Knight (2) and Bell (3). The total production to February 28th, 1930, has been 10,760,107 ounces of silver and 1,285. 434 pounds (weight) of cobalt.

"The evolution of mining methods at Brunswick Mining and Smelting shows that, in the case of a large deposit, technology must adapt itself to changing conditions. As problems are encountered, management must modify their approach if they hope to meet production quotas. This search for new and better ways started with the opening of the No. 12 orebody and is still going on today.From large-scale open stoping, the Brunswick Mining and Smelting operation went to transversal cut-and-fill, then to longitudinal cut-and-fill, which is the main mining method now employed. However, to solve certain problems experimenting with Avoca methods was initiated. Rebar grouting and prepinning have also made significant contributions toward securing relatively poor ground in the hanging wall and holding badly fractured backs in wide stoping areas. Introduction In 1952, M.J. Boylen had incorporated Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited to develop his recently found No.6 and No. 12 orebodies near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Between 1953 and 1957, St. Joseph Lead Company was brought in to try and initiate mining . During those years, St. Joseph Lead sunk two shafts at No. 12-No. 1 to 425 feet below surface and No.2 to 982 feet. They also developed the 200 and 350 levels to sample the ore at depth and operated a 100-tpd pilot plant at the No.6 mine. However, due to low recoveries and depressed metal prices. the project was shut down in 1957.A group including M.J. Boylen. K.C. Irving. Maritime Mining Corporation and Patino Corporation reacquired the property from St. Joseph Lead Company in 1961. New financing was arranged involving La Societe Generale des Minerais, S.A . of Belgium and Engineering Consultants Limited of Saint John. New Brunswick. During the years 1962 and 1963, construction of surface and underground facilities progressed rapidly."

The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

ABSTRACT Inco’s Iron Ore Recovery Plant was operated by Inco from 1955 to 1980 near Sudbury, Ontario. As exposures to specific nickel substances have been associated with adverse respiratory endpoints it is important to understand processes giving rise to such substances. This manuscript discusses the process and equipment, the propensity for aerosol formation, and operational procedures used by Inco in roasting a pyrrhotite concentrate, reducing the nickel in the formed oxide, leaching the nickel in ammoniacal solution, purifying the resulting solution, making green or black NiO, and producing iron oxide pellets. Industrial hygiene measurements are also reported.

Fluorspar, in addition to its familiar uses as a metallurgical flux and as a source of the electrolyte for aluminum production, has become important as an essential raw material in the rapidly growing fluorine chemical industry. The unique ability of fluorine to react and form compounds with al-most all other chemicals has made it one of the important elements in modern chemistry. Research and development over the past thirty years have resulted in a current annual production of fluorine chemicals that is both technically and economically important to industry. Because many of these chemicals and products are relatively new, and most have properties that are not duplicated by other materials, the present uses are expanding rapidly and new applications are being reported continually. Fluorspar, the only immediate and practical source of fluorine, is therefore an important mineral. This fact has been recognized in major industrial areas such as the United States and Western Europe, but has received little attention in Canada.

"In this study, hydraulic conductivity (K) geostatistics were used to predict residence time distribution of well-to-well flow. Flow profiles, fracture density measurements, and pumping tests were available from the highly fractured Florence Copper in situ leaching site. The flow profiles were used to establish the statistical distribution and spatial autocorrelation of K. Two tests were used for validation. The first test confirmed that fracture density and K are autocorrelated over similar length scales. In the second test, Monte Carlo flow simulations successfully recreated the results of pumping tests. Flow sim¬ulations were used to stochastically model well-to-well residence time distribution. RÉSUMÉ Dans cette étude, nous utilisons la géostatistique de la conductivité hydraulique (K) pour prévoir la distribution des temps de séjour (DTS) de l’écoulement entre les puits. Des profils de l’écoulement, des mesures de la densité des fractures et des essais de pompage existaient pour le site fortement fracturé de lixiviation in situ de Florence Copper. Les simulations d’écoulement ont servi à établir un modèle stochastique de la DTS de l’écoulement entre les puits.INTRODUCTION In situ leaching is the circulation of a dilute acid or base solution in the subsurface, via a series of injection and recovery wells, to dissolve a target metal. In situ leach modelling requires forecasting the residence time distribution (RTD) of flow between wells. In fractured formations such as copper porphyry deposits, order-of-magnitude variations in hydraulic conductivity (K) can result in highly channeled flow, resulting in a heavy tailed RTD (Becker & Shapiro, 2003; Kang, Le Borgne, Dentz, Bour, & Juanes, 2015). Channeling through preferential pathways has impacted copper recovery at several past in situ leaching field tests (Cathles, Glenn, Lenzi, Nigrini, Deans, & Huff, 1978; Ahlness & Pojar, 1983; Schmidt, Earley, & Friedel, 1994; Sinclair & Thompson, 2015). The aim of this work is to combine multiple types of hydrogeological measurements to stochastically forecast the well-to-well RTD in fractured rock for the purposes of copper in situ leach modelling."

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.
