"On a développé un procédé qui donne une fonte (2,3% C, 0,07% V) du V2O5 (99%) et un rutile synthétique (94% TiO2) à partir d'un minerai, dont les réserves au Québec sont importantes. Le procédé comprend les opérations suivantes: 1) la concentration magnétique du minerai (30% Fe, 9% TiO2 et 0,65% V2O5) pour produire un concentré (65% Fe, 7% TiO2 et 1,6% V2O5); 2) le smeltage du concentré aggloméré dans un four à arc, sans fondant, pour produire une fonte et une scorie (30% FeO, 40% TiO2 et 8,0% V2O5) qui contient plus de 95% du vanadium et du titane présents dans le concentré; 3) le grillage alcalin (37% Na2CO3) de la scorie suivi d'une lixiviation à l'eau et de la précipitation de l'hexavanadate d'ammonium à partir du filtrat; 4) la lixiviation du résidu par l'acide sulfurique pur ou usagé pour produire un rutile synthétique. Un estimé préliminaire de la valeur économique du projet laisse croire à sa rentabilité à la condition que l'investissement pour le smeltage soit inférieur à environ 400$/tonne de fer.IntroductionLes gisements de magnétites titanifères sont nombreux dans le monde. Ils consistent en une magnétite étroitement liée a l'ilménite, La teneur trop élevée en TiO2 empêche l'exploitation de ces gisements pour la production de fer. Cependant, dans certains cas, la magnétite a une teneur intéressante en vanadium qui peut rendre l'exploitation de ces gisements rentable. Aujourd'hui, les magnétites titanifères constituent la plus importante source de production de vanadium. On estime qu'environ 70% du vanadium produit provient de ces sources."

The steel industry of the entire OECD is briefly described before proceeding to a more detailed discussion of various aspects of the steel industries of European OECD members, emphasizing practices and conditions that differ from those in North America. Benefits to Canada of representation at meetings of the OECD Special Committee for Iron and Steel are described."

While the concepts of Aboriginal title share a similar jurisprudence in both Australia and Canada resource development regimes on Aboriginal title lands differ significantly. In Australia, the process is the right to negotiate with mining proponents. In Canada, the process is the duty to consult with government regarding mining projects. This paper compares and assesses the processes for ?consultation and negotiation? with Indigenous peoples when development actions (particularly in the context of mining resource development) impact Indigenous property rights and how agreement making can be progressed. This paper will question whether the resource development processes afford Indigenous people?s property rights full respect when mining developments on Indigenous lands are proposed.

"The St-Honoré carbonatite complex, located 8 miles north of Chicoutimi, Quebec, was discovered in September 1967 as abnormal radioactivity was detected in the course of SOQUEM's aerial surveys. The complex, covered by a shallow layer of Trenton limestone, has been explored by aeromagnetic, ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys, and 12,013 feet of diamond drilling. Its age, from potassium-argon dating, is 650 million years. The carbonatite is approximately kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 6 square miles, 20 per cent of which is explored. It shows a central core of coarse-grained massive dolomitic carbonatite and an outer ring of foliated dolomitic carbonatite.The exploration work to date has resulted in the discovery, in the foliated carbonatite, of an incompletely drilled niobium (columbium) zone of pyrochlore-bearing carbonatite, at least 1,000 by 800 feet in size. This zone contains 5,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.86 per cent Nb205 or at least 15,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.66 per cent Nb205 or 45,000 tons grading 0.48 per cent Nb20s. The pyrochlore contains an average of 64 per cent Nb,Os. The central core contains a zone of rare-earth-bearing carbonatite (as monazite), grading up to 4.5 per cent rare-earth oxide, 3,500 ppm zinc and 290 ppm molybdenum. Stocks of nepheline syenite and magnetite diorite accompany the carbonatite. The total analysis and trace-element contents of typical rocks are presented."

INTRODUCTION WHILE TITANIUM, the element, has been known for over 150 years, titanium, the metal, is a relative newcomer to the metallurgical and industrial scene. The reasons for this chiefly lie in the refract1Hy nature of titanium compounds; the high melting point of the metal; the great activity of elemental titanium, particularly at temperatures close to .and above the melting point; and the pronounced deleterious influence of certain impurities on its mechanical proper-ties. Early efforts at production of the metal were, consequently, either unsuccessful or resulted in products having sub-metallic properties. With the considerable improvement in equipment, materials, and skills that have developed within the past twenty-five years, later investigators have had a better opportunity to overcome some of the inherent practical obstacles and to come to grips with the essential technical problems. NATURAL ABUNDANCE OF TITANIUM Titanium is one of the most abundant metallic elements. It has been estimated (1) that titanium comp-rises about 0.65 per cent of the earth's crust, and therefore ranks fourth among the structurally useful metals in the order: aluminum, iron, magnesium, titanium. It must be appreciated that the relative abundance of the element is only a crude indication of its potential availability, since a very substantial proportion is present as a minor constituent in practically all igneous rocks. By comparison, present-day ores of titanium are relatively few and are but a minor fraction of the estimated total titanium contained in the earth' s crust.

Sherritt Gordon and Cominco, with financial assistance from the Canadian Government through PAIT, have developed a hydrometallurgical process for refining copper from sulphide concentrates. The main objective of the project was to develop a process applicable to a wide range of concentrates with respect to copper content, other metals content and impurities, within the economic parameters set by present smelting and refining practice. Other important objectives were to recover sulphur in its elemental form and not as sulphur dioxide to assure improved hygienic conditions and a negligible impact on the environment. For the most abundant and relatively refractory chalcopyrite concentrates, the first step of the process is thermal activation with hydrogen to decompose chalcopyrite and pyrite, commonly associated with it, into more reactive sulphides more amenable to leaching. The iron is then selectively extracted by sulphuric acid leaching and subsequently rejected as jarosite. High-bornite concentrates do not require thermal activation and acid leaching; they are subjected to another hydrometallurgical iron removal step. The high-grade copper sulphide resulting from iron removal, and containing all of the initial precious metals, is then leached under oxygen pressure to produce elemental sulphur and copper sulphate solution . After suitable solution purification, the copper is recovered by high-current-density electrowinning as wire-grade product. Precious metals remain in the leach residue and are recovered after separation of the gangue materials and elemental sulphur. The laboratory and pre-piloting test work had indicated copper and precious metals recoveries comparable to those achieved in current practice. The process was shown to be suitable for handling relatively low-grade concentrates and, in addition, it was capable of high recoveries of associated zinc, molybdenum, nickel and cobalt in saleable form.

The Iron and steel industry is one of the most intensive energy consuming processes. The majority of iron making processes is now directed towards the uses of fossil-based energy sources like coke, coal and oil. Recently, emphasis has been paid to replace part of fossil- based energy sources with renewable biomass-derived reducing agents. In the present work, the possibility of the effective use of woody biomass in carbon-iron oxide composites was investigated. Wood powder was carbonized in N2 atmosphere at 300 up to 450oC. The carbon content in the produced bio-char increased with temperature. The porosity of the char arises from maintaining the cellular structure inherent in wood biomass increases with temperature. The reduction behavior of four iron oxide-bio char composites having different fixed carbon content were carried out non-isothermally up to 1200oC in Ar atmosphere using thermogravimetric anlyser (TGA). Quadruple mass spectroscopy (QMS) was also adopted to measure the CO, CO2 concentrations in the off gases resulted during reduction process. The effect of volatile matter on the reduction of iron oxide was intensively studied. The different phases developed in the reduced product were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The reduction of composites was found to proceed in a stepwise manner (Fe2O3?Fe3O4?FexO?Fe).

Al/Mg/Ti laminated metal composite sheet (LMCS) can combine the merits of each of metal components, and obtain excellent performances. It incorporates the advantages of high strength, light weight, easy melt and atomization, and good space adaptability to substitute for the bumper Al sheet of Whipple shield structure for space debris shield. The Al/Mg/Ti LMCS was fabricated by hot roll bonding technology in a certain sequence. The manufacturing process and parameters were analyzed and studied, including the first rolling reduction, roll boding temperature and stacking structure of each metal. The microstructure of dissimilar metals and bonding interface were characterized and analyzed. The optimized manufacturing procedures and parameters were presented based on the microstructure and mechanical properties of LMCS. The research results offer some guides and references for controlling the shape of bonding interface, optimizing the annealing process, improving the mechanical properties of Al/Mg/Ti LMCS.

Abstract-Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and reflects infiltrative fluid flow, wallrock reaction, temperature variations, and fluid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonation usually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knife sharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although, visually striking and scientifically interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations are less useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonation pattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14 well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarn or other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wallrocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gossan in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to garnet, to pyroxene, to massive-sulfide replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal locations. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet:pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation patterns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is commonly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, reflecting particularly reducing wallrocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcic garnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisen stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite. Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wallrocks. Goldrich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa- Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with significant zones of massive sulfides within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wallrocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and metasomatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. CHEMICAL AN AL YSIS by x-ray emission spectrometry has become increasingly important during the past few years. The method is analogous to optical spectrography ?with x-rays being used instead of light and should not be confused with methods of x-ray diffraction used? for identification of minerals and chemical compounds. X-ray emission spectrometry has many advantages for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Its optimum concentration range is higher than that of the optical spectrograph, and the group of elements which can be detected is not identical to that which can be detected by the optical spectrograph. Elements which can be detected by the x-ray spectrometer are those elements from magnesium (atomic number 12) to uranium (atomic number 92) in the periodic table. The lightest elements in this range have low sensitivities and more specialized equipment is necessary for their detection than for the heavier elements. A large number of applications of x-ray analysis have been directed toward the analysis of ores, metallurgical products, and related materials (see References at end of paper). A more complete bibliography is presented in the Norelco Reporter, Vol. 3, 1956, pp. 37-39. "In a continuing investigation into the development of uranium alloys for armament applications, some complex base alloy corn positions were modified by varying the amount of alloying elements and by removing one or two of the alloying elements in turn from the base alloys. These uranium-base alloys were specially formulated in a search for heat-treatable, high-strength, ductile, high-density alloys. All alloys studied were ternary, quaternary or more complex alloys of uranium with molybdenum, zirconium, niobium and vanadium. Each cast alloy was studied under three different heat-treatments, and its mechanical and corrosion properties were determined. It was found that although most of the alloys studied had the hardness and strength required, they were extremely brittle and notch-sensitive under tensile stresses."

"Abstract- The mineralogy of samples from the Wellgreen Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd deposit, Yukon Territory, is complex and the metals of interest are contained within fme-grained minerais which vary in size and mineral associations from sample to sample.The major Ni carriers are pentlandite and violarite; the major Cu carrier is chalcopyrite. About 700Jo of the major Ni carriers and 78% of the major Cu qmier will be liberated at a grind of 80% -&apos;}f,.7 J.Uil (-500 mesh) for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1). For typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2) and typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3) the liberation would be 71""lo and 65% for Ni, 74% and 60% for Cu, respectively. Fine grinding, however, cannot liberate the Ni contained in silicates and pyrrhotite, estimated to total24.5% for typicallow-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1), 15% for typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2), and 12% for typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3).The principal Pt carrier (sperrylite) varies considerably in grain-size between samples and fme grinding, required to liberate the major Ni and Cu carriers, may be counterproductive in samples where sperrylite is relatively coarse-grained, as sorne would then be unrecovered (e.g. sample No. 1). In addition, sperrylite in samples No. 2 and No. 3 is closely associated with magnetite.Palladium occurs in diverse ways. It occurs in the form of several Pd minerais (e.g. sudburyite, testibiopalladite, merenskyite), as a replacement for Ni in several tellurides, antimonides and tel­ lurantimonides (e.g. melonite), or as very low concentrations in pentlandite (up to 34 ppm), chal­ copyrite (up to 9 ppm), and pyrrhotite (up to 5.6 ppm). Palladium minerais and Pd-bearing minerals are strongly associated with chalcopyrite in sample No. 1 and will thus report to a Cu concentrate. However, 22% of the total Pd is in solid solution in pentlandite in this sample and will thus report to the Ni concentrate. In samples No. 2 and No. 3, less Pd occurs in solid solution in pentlandite, and the PGM are distributed mainly among pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 2, and among pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 3. Therefore, the feasibility of magnetic concentration should be investigated for samples like No. 2 and No. 3, in order to improve Pt and Pd recoveries.Rhodium was found to occur as rare hollingworthite, in sparse cobaltite (up to 2.7%) and, as low concentrations in chalcopyrite (to 10 ppm) and pentlandite (to 12 ppm) by proton microprobe. Iridium occurs in hollingworthite (up to 7.8%) and very rarely as the native metal or in an undefmed Re-Ir-Os-Ru alloy. Ruthenium was determined by proton microprobe analyses to occur in pentlandite (up to 13 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 10 ppm), in addition to rare laurite and Re alloy."

ABSTRACT With the gold industry processing more complex ores, the online measurement and control of cyanide addition to the gold leaching circuit has become more critical. This paper compares the two commonly employed ‘free’ cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric endpoint silver nitrate titration) with the rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods common at site laboratories. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared using these measurement techniques.

Surfaces forces have been measured between gold sphere and gold-coated glass plate in xanthate solutions using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The measurements conducted in potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions showed long-range hydrophobic forces, with the force curves showing no evidence for nanonubbles on the surface. The strongest hydrophobic force was measured at contact angle of 94° with a decay length of 23 nm. The hydrophobic force became weaker at higher concentrations and after a long immersion time, which may be attributed to the xanthate species adsorbed on top of the first mono layer. The hydrophobic force became stronger when the residual xanthate solution is displaced by pure water, indicating that hydrophobic force becomes the strongest in pure water.

"AbstractThe paper identifies the major components of price change which affect the determination of the internal rate of return of a mining project. It illustrates several price indexes which may be used to measure general price increases, identifying techniques which might incorporate them into mine valuation procedures. The ""hurdle rate"" for new investment is discussed.IntroductionDECISIONS regarding the value of an orebody and whether or when to mine an orebody are based on an estimate of the cash flows which would be associated with its exploitation. These pro-forma cash flows represent cash in or out of a possible mineable deposit and include exploration and construction costs, sales revenues, operating expenses, taxes, debt borrowings, interest and debt repayment. It has long been recognized that when combining the cash flows occurring over the life of the mine, dollars received or paid out early have greater value than those received or paid out later. This time value of money has been incorporated into mine evaluation calculations through the use of present-value or discounting techniques. Another factor affecting mine valuation, inflation, is not accounted for by valuation techniques now in use. In recent years, price changes have become more volatile. In the past, price change could easily be ignored when evaluating potential mines. Today, the combination of larger investments and greater price volatility leads to great concern about the effects of price change on mine valuation."

Adsorption/thermal desorption with sorbent cartridges and analytical method using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the determination of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) emitted from primary aluminum smelters. A customized cartridge was built like a packed column with a stainless steel tube filled with a specific resin. The optimization of adsorption and desorption parameters was carried out to support the PFC sampling for all aluminum production technologies. The proposed method showed good linearity for concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ppbv for CF4 and from 5 to 500 ppbv for C2F6 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. In certain conditions, the detection limits of the analytical method reached 0.3 ppbv for CF4 and 0.15 ppbv for C2F6- Using this methodology, a field campaign was carried out using a sequential sampler allowing the simultaneous sampling of PFC with cartridges and sampling bags. The results showed no significant difference (t-test) between the two sampling technologies and no breakthrough was observed from the cartridges .

"The processing of nickel laterites has been a topic of major interest at CSIRO for almost twenty years. During this period CSIRO has collaborated with other researchers and industry in developing a better understanding of existing processes and been actively involved in testing/developing new beneficiation and process options for these ores. The current paper summarises the results of selected studies and highlights improvements that have been achieved. Key topics to be discussed include enhancements in the mineralogical characterisation, beneficiation approaches, improvements in the understanding and application of leaching technologies, the development of synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) for the recovery of nickel/cobalt from laterite leach liquors and the collaborative development of the Direct Nickel process. Future opportunities and key research questions will be briefly examined.INTRODUCTION Nickel laterite ores comprise a significant resource in Australia and according to United States Geological Survey data nearly a quarter of world reserves are located there (USGS, 2016). More specifically, around 95% of Australian nickel resources (laterite and sulfide) are located in Western Australia (Australian Government, 2017). Given the recent closure of Queensland Nickel, essentially all of Australian nickel production occurs in Western Australia and the primary producers of processed nickel products include Nickel West (Kwinana) with ~84,000 t saleable nickel metal in 2016 (BHP Billiton, 2017), Minara Resources (Murrin Murrin) with 46,700 t nickel metal produced in 2015 (Glencore Australia, 2017), and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Ravensthorpe) who sold 25,882 t nickel as mixed hydroxide product in 2016 (First Quantum Minerals, 2017). The total sales of nickel from Western Australia in the 2015-16 financial year were 175,722 t. The study of nickel laterites at CSIRO recommenced at the time second generation High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) plants were being commissioned at Bulong, Cawse and Murrin Murrin in the late 1990’s. A combination of technical and engineering issues meant that the ramp-up times at these operations were slower than expected and the outcomes resulting from the attendant problems are well documented (e.g. Griffin & Becker, 2000; Reid & Barnett, 2002; O’Callaghan, 2003) while the issues faced at the BHP-Billiton-built Ravensthorpe plant have been addressed by the current owners of this project, First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Piper, 2012)."

"Abstract-Detailed petrographical and geochemical studies have been carried out on the igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Omai area, part of the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni greenstone belt, Guyana. The stratigraphic succession at Omai begins with basalts, associated with mafic-ultramafic intrusives and poorly-sorted conglomerates; these are overlain by andesites and quartzfeldspar porphyries, with pelites and tuffaceous sediments at the top. The volcanic-sedimentary succession was intruded by a quartz-monzodioritic stock (Omai stock) and granophyric rhyolite dikes. Several generations of mafic dikes were intruded discontinuously from the Mesoproterozoic to the Permo-Triassic. Volcanic rocks range in composition from subalkaline basalt to high-silica rhyolites, with a gap between 60% to 70% SiO2, which suggests the suite is bimodal. Major, trace, and rare earth element criteria were used to subdivide the rocks into tholeiitic and calc-alkaline types. The tholeiitic rocks are characterized by flat to moderately sloping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. On the basis of immobile trace-element ratios, the tholeiitic mafic rocks from Omai have characteristics of immature intra-oceanic island arcs, or of E-MORB basalts affected by a strong arc signature, as is commonly reported for back-arc basin basalts. The andesites, quartz-feldspar porphyries, rhyolites and quartz monzodioritic stock are calc-alkaline, with strongly sloping REE patterns, enrichments in the large-ion lithophile elements, and depletions in the heavy REE and high-field-strength elements, features which are typical of more mature island-arc settings.At Omai, two types of gold-bearing veins can be distinguished: vein sets (± stockworks) and tension veins, both post-dating the regional metamorphic peak at the level they were emplaced. The relationship between the gold mineralization and its host lithologies does not seem to be genetic. Rather, the emplacement of mineralization was strongly influenced by the rheological contrasts between the intrusive/subvolcanic bodies and the volcanic/sedimentary country rocks. These contrasts helped to focus the regional stress upon the more competent intrusive subvolcanic bodies, resulting in brittle fracturing, and therefore in greatly enhanced permeability to hydrothermal fluids. The Omai gold mineralization can be classified as late tectonic, with its emplacement controlled by the last brittle to brittle-ductile stages of the Trans-Amazonian orogeny."

"Detailed petrographical and geochemical studies have been carried out on the igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Omai area, part of the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni greenstonebelt, Guyana. The stratigraphic succession at Omai begins with basalts, associated with ma?c-ultrama?c intrusives and poorly-sorted conglomerates; these are overlain by andesites and quartz-feldspar porphyries, with pelites and tuffaceous sediments at the top. The volcanic-sedimentary succession was intruded by a quartz-monzodioritic stock (Omai stock) and granophyric rhyolitedikes. Several generations of ma?c dikes were intruded discontinuously from the Mesoproterozoicto the Permo-Triassic. Volcanic rocks range in composition from subalkaline basalt to high-silicarhyolites, with a gap between 60% to 70% SiO2, which suggests the suite is bimodal. Major, trace, and rare earth element criteria were used to subdivide the rocks into tholeiitic and calc-alkaline types. The tholeiitic rocks are characterized by ?at to moderately sloping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. On the basis of immobile trace-element ratios, the tholeiitic ma?c rocks from Omai have characteristics of immature intra-oceanic island arcs, or of E-MORB basalts affected by a strong arcsignature, as is commonly reported for back-arc basin basalts. "Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."
