"Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) is a Canadian-based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico. In 2010, AEM produced its first gold bar in Nunavut, Canada as it started its Meadowbank operation. It is also in 2010 that AEM acquired the Meliadine property, which is located 25 Km North of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The Meliadine gold project is an advanced exploration and development project, comprising of workers camp, underground and open mines, a processing plant and all the services facilities and infrastructures required to sustain operation in a remote arctic environment.Pending formal board approval, production start-up is planned for Q3 2019 and the process flowsheet is based on an ore processing rate of 1.1 million dry tonnes per year (3,000 dry tonnes per day from underground mining) for the first three years, and 1.98 million dry tonnes per year (5,000 dry tonnes per day from both underground and open pit mining) for the remaining years at 92% process plant availability.To the end of 2015, more than 45 metallurgical test programs have been conducted on the Meliadine deposits. Based on the results of these programs, an optimal gold circuit was designed, comprising of crushing, grinding, gravity separation and cyanide leaching with a carbon-in-leach circuit (CIL), followed by cyanide destruction and filtration of the tails for dry stacking. The assumed gold recovery for the reserves averages 96.0% at a 7.44-g/t gold average mill feed grade."

"A general computer program has been written to calculate material balances using multiple regression techniques. The program can handle metal assays or size distribution data obtained in multiple surveys of the flotation circuit. The ""best fit"" weight split is calculated between the input and product streams by minimizing the sum of squares of the residual errors using all of the available data. The program includes an assay adjustment feature in which each assay is recalculated to fit the ""best fit"" mass balance. Thus assay or sampling errors can be easily identified. Also the assays can be statistically weighted so the most precise measurements are given the most influence on the material balance. The computer output reports the mass balance, the actual and corrected assays, the percent metal recoveries and the significance and confidence levels for the weight splits.The program enables a rapid and accurate evaluation of mass balances from large masses of data obtained in multiple surveys around a flotation circuit. The effects of changing process variables can be quickly evaluated with statistical confidence."

"Since the autumn of 1973, the world's attention was captured by the startling revelation that conventional energy supplies were not inexhaustible but were in fact quickly dwindling with future shortages imminent until lagging exploration and technology yielded additional energy sources to catch up with the spiralling increase in demand. This situation was precipitated by the Arab Oil Embargo and the resulting soaring cost of world crude oil.During the past few years there has been tremendous activity in the energy field which has had a direct impact on the Inca Metals Company Ontario Division operations. The company's reaction has been to establish an energy management program which will be described later in the paper. First, a brief description of the Inca Metals Company and the primary energy resources which are utilized will assist in putting the program into perspective.The Inca Metals Company, a unit of Inca Limited, is responsible for the production and sale of primary metals products worldwide. The company's operations in the Sudbury District include mines, ore concentrating plants, a Smelter, Nickel and Copper Refineries and an Iron Ore Recovery Plant. The Ontario Division also has a mine and concentrating plant in Shebandowan near Thunder Bay, and a metals refinery at Port Colborne. Inca is the largest producer of nickel in the non-communist world and is also a major producer of copper and platnium group metals."

"The paper describes the author's experiences in the startup of autogenous and semiautogenous grinding circuits gained over the last twenty years on both large and small grinding circuits. Typical phases in commissioning from construction to startup with ore are covered. The paper also describes experiences with material handling systems, slurry pumping, vibrating screens, trommel screens and pebbles crushing systems. INTRODUCTIONThe commissioning of any new mineral processing plant is an important and exciting milestone in any project. It is at this point in time that the efforts of developers, design engineers, equipment suppliers and operators culminate in a finished product. The successful completion of any project requires that the plant achieve design throughput as quickly as possible. The success of any startup can generally be anticipated by the amount of careful planning which takes place before equipment is operated. The first part of this paper describes the steps in going from construction through to introduction of ore. The organization and planning of startup activities is also covered.The second part of this paper describes some typical problem areas and past experiences in the startup of semi-autogenous grinding circuits. Semi-autogenous grinding circuits present some special challenges in the startup phase. The description of some of these problems and experiences will hopefully provide other operators with suggestions on how to avoid (or at least prepare for) these problems."

"The settlements between mines and smelters are based on the mass of metal contained in concentrate lots. The mass of contained metal is a function of the wet mass of a lot, and its moisture content and metal grade while the variance of the mass of contained metal is a function of the same variables and their variances. Uncertainties in the measurement procedure applied to estimate each variable are quantified in terms of precision and bias. The absence of bias and an acceptable degree of precision are the keys to effective risk analysis and loss control.ISO Technical Committee 183-Copper, Lead and Zinc Sulfide Concentrates, has developed standard methods for sampling and weighing, estimating precision and testing for bias, the determination of mass loss on drying, the calculation of the mass of contained metal and its variance, and various analytical methods for major and minor metals. The variance for wet mass is calculated from the precision of the scale while the total variances of moisture and grade are estimated from pairs of interpenetrating primary samples. The variance of contained metal can be calculated either from mine data or from smelter data but the risk associated with the settlement is largely determined by the absence or presence of bias and the variance of differences between exchange assays.ISO/TC 183 does not deal with precision and bias for exchange assays but is developing guidelines to determine realistic splitting limits. Given that the exchange of assays between mines and smelters accounts for a large part of the risk associated with the settlement, precision and bias for exchange assays should be measured and monitored. The need for umpire services can be reduced by applying statistical quality control (SQC).Calibrating static scales, moisture balances and analytical balances, bias testing of sampling methods and sample preparation procedures, estimating the variance of a single variable or the variance of a function that a set of variables defines, and monitoring precision and bias for exchange assays, are the quintessence of metrology, the science of measurement, when applied in mining and metallurgy."

BHP Billiton?s Cannington facility is a mining and minerals processing plant near Mt. Isa in Central Queensland, Australia, producing silver, lead and zinc. Mine ore is processed in a concentrator, which consists of grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration. Grinding is carried out in a fully autogenous (AG) mill. The mill operates in closed circuit with a pebble crusher. Throughput is approximately 380 tph. Cyclone overflow from the grinding circuit is fed into a flotation circuit for the recovery of lead, zinc and silver. Two concentrates are produced (lead and zinc), which are then thickened and filtered. The filtered concentrate is transported by road to a rail receiving station. From here the concentrate is railed to port in Townsville for shipment to the smelter. Matrikon and Engineers at BHP Billiton?s Cannington Mine have used ProcessACT to develop a flexible, nonlinear dynamic simulator for the grinding circuit to further enhance process understanding, as well to investigate various optimization strategies. An online charge volume estimator was also developed for the AG mill to aid in the understanding of overload conditions, which for the previous two months had been the primary contributor to downtime. The models were developed using a combination of first-principles modeling along with input-output dynamic responses. Examples of models used include: Morrell ?C? model for power and charge shoulder/toe angle prediction; Whiten?s mixing model for breakage and hold-up; Nageswararao cyclone model for predicting cut size; slurry recovery and water recovery. The composite model simulates system dynamics starting from the stockpile reclaim system and finishing at the feed for the flotation process. The objective was to provide a tool that assisted Cannington in understanding their Grinding Circuit and allowed them to develop and evaluate circuit optimization strategies. BHP Billiton Cannington Mine is now considering development of a Grinding Circuit Optimizer utilizing the models developed for the simulator.

The mechanization of platinum group metal (PGM) underground reef mining in South Africa has posed a challenge to mining engineers for several decades. This is primarily due to the shallow dip angles and narrow thickness (<1.1m) of the tabular orebodies mined, and the issues faced in developing reliable drilling, bolting and loading machines suitable for such hard-rock mining applications. Presently, mining is typically conducted using hand drills and scraper shovels. These methods, however, are intensive in terms of manual labor, and limited in terms of productivity, and improved methods are desired. This paper will review the technical features of a 4 tonne, low-profile, LHD for narrow-reef PGM mining, developed by EJC Loaders Division.

"Improving mill grade recovery relationships is always good business. INCO’s Clarabelle Mill has just undergone a $16 million process upgrade that was designed to improve nickel recovery by 2%. The “Mill Redesign Project” was completed on time, under budget and delivered the promised improvement in recoveries.This paper describes the methodology of the Mill Redesign Team, details of the process improvements and the critical success factors that helped the team deliver on its promises.With a payback of under one year, the Mill Redesign Project will play a key role in ensuring a competitive edge as INCO embarks on its second century of operation.INTRODUCTIONIt is not uncommon in milling operations to encounter a crisis. That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. Flowsheet and process changes are attempted and abandoned. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. Regardless, the metallurgist can sit back and bask in the apparent success of his or her endeavours.Less common is when a problem is carefully diagnosed, a team put together to explore all avenues and recommend a path of action that is implemented on time, on budget and immediately delivers on the promises which are sustained over time. This is one such story. It is the story of the Mill Redesign Project at INCO’s Clarabelle Mill in Copper Cliff, Ontario.BACKGROUNDThe Clarabelle Mill was built in 1971 on the southern rim of the Sudbury basin. At that time it was one of four mills operated by INCO in the Sudbury area. During the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s, the need for increased process efficiency, higher levels of sulphur rejection to tails and the concurrent development of high capacity mills and flotation cells, resulted in the consolidation of INCO’s Sudbury area milling operations into a single, expanded facility at Clarabelle."

The full economic evaluation of a mining project requires a block model that provides an estimate of the tons and grades of available resources. The model must be representative of the mineralization to be found at the time of mining for specified extraction periods and within acceptable error margins. In an operating mine, there may be a reasonable understanding and estimates of actual dilution and ore loss. This paper discusses the issue from the perspective of a project at a feasibility or preproduction level of development. Three types of dilution are discussed. Internal dilution (or change of support) is function of the spatial distribution of the mineralization and its relation to the operation?s selectivity. Geologic contact dilution is the unavoidable mixture at contacts or boundaries of material with different geologic characteristics, grades, or metallurgical performance. Operational planned and unplanned dilution should also be considered, sometimes incorporated by factoring the resource model, but more accurately by mimicking the grade control process. The resource estimation process always carries uncertainty, which is sometimes significant, and usually caused by several factors. These include quantity and quality of drill hole information; quantity and quality of geologic data; grade estimation methodology; dilution and mining recovery factors applied; etc. A key decision is to whether estimate as accurately as possible the in-situ geologic resource or to estimate the tons and grade of the material to be fed to the processing plant. The geologic modeling and grade estimation methods used are conditioned by this decision.

"This paper supplements the information provided annually at the Canadian Mineral Processors Operators Conference regarding the education of Mineral Processors in Canada. The purpose of the paper is to provide information regarding the engineering accreditation process in the United States and the universities that offer programs in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy in the U.S.There is a critical shortage of trained Mineral Processors and Mining Engineers world wide. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) formed a task force to evaluate the national needs for trained engineers and to track the number of engineers who graduate from U.S. universities each year. The statistical information for Mining Engineers is well-developed. The current effort is to assemble similar information regarding students who graduate with expertise in Extractive Metallurgy and Mineral Processing as well as to explore the limitations of the accreditation system in the United States and its impact on the education of Mineral Processors. The long-term objective is to develop a data base regarding Mineral Processing programs and Mineral Processing graduates that is as complete as the one that has been maintained by the Canadian Mineral Processors.INTRODUCTIONIn the United States engineering curricula are accredited by ABET, which was formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The objective of ABET accreditation is to ensure that educational programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology meet quality standards set in conjunction with the professional organizations that represent professionals in the industries which hire students graduating from those educational programs. For example, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) is the lead society for accrediting Mining Engineering programs in the U.S. For Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering programs, the lead society is The Mineral, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). SME is a cooperating society for accrediting Metallurgical Engineering programs. Cooperating societies for the accreditation of Materials Engineering include the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers (NICE), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)."

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. "Impala Platinum Limited is the world’s second largest platinum producer, producing more than 1.7 million ounces of the precious metal last year, much of this from the UG-2 reef located in the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. As part of Impala’s ongoing expansion programme, tonnage through their principal UG-2 processing facility, near Rustenburg, was increased 40% in 2001.To accommodate the increased throughput, the role of the existing primary mills was converted from conventional semi-autogenous grinding units, to attrition and selective grinding units, operating in fully autogenous mode. The finer chromite and coarser silicate components in the mill discharge are then separated by screening and processed in dedicated circuits downstream. This way, the need to spend considerable capital to increase primary grinding capacity was averted.In the last year, considerable work has been conducted to evaluate and optimise the two downstream circuits. This has involved an optimisation programme of sampling and diagnostic flotation testing, supported with QemSCAN analysis. This paper will describe the operation of the new circuit. It will also describe some of the more novel aspects and interesting findings from the optimisation programme.INTRODUCTIONThe South African platinum industry is the world’s largest producer of platinum and the world’s second largest producer of palladium. Located in a wide area north of Johannesburg, the industry mines ores from the Bushveld Complex, one of the world’s great mineral treasure chests, containing over 70 percent of the world’s platinum, as well as extensive reserves of the other PGE (platinum group elements), chrome, manganese and vanadium. The industry employs about 180,000 people in, predominantly, underground mines, which together form an almost unbroken circle of mining operations 200 km in diameter."

"IN FIELD WORK in the Cape Breton Highlands, which are heavily covered with vegetation, it is necessary to run traverses along the valleys of small brooks. We encountered difficulty in closing such traverses, and the following technique was developed to solve this problem. It has been tested in the field for four seasons by several people, and found to be simple, efficient and more accurate than any other compass-and-pace system of which we are aware. So far as we can find, the technique has not been described previously. It may be of use to others.The Cape Breton Highlands of Nova Scotia consist of hills of old intrusive and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks protruding up to 1,000 feet above the general level of the younger sediments which underlie the valleys. The flat hill-tops are the remnants of a plateau; drainage off the edge of this plateau has produced many small steep brooks. They occupy valleys which are up to 800 feet deep, and V-shaped in cross section, with steep sides covered by mixed conifers and hardwoods. The stream at the bottom is rarely more than a few feet wide, with a negligible meander belt, but with many bends, rapids and falls. Visibility along the stream, in consequence, is rarely more than a few hundred feet, and in many places much less.It was found impractical to map the streams by the method of meander lines, as described in many standard surveying texts and hand-books. The limited visibility, and the numerous bends of the brooks, necessitated many corners. Every corner introduces errors. To 'close' a survey with 40 or 50 such corners proved either very time-consuming or impossible. In most cases, however, the general direction of a valley may be obtained from an aerial photograph, or by direct observation, and this became the basis of the method adopted."

"The author will review the early history of shaft sinking as well as focus on the improvements made in shaft design and construction over the last fifty years (1970 to 2019) to predict how shaft sinking will change over the next fifty years and describe what the shaft sinking world might look like in 2070. INTRODUCTION It is a great honour to be one of your keynote speakers for the Fourth International Conference on Shaft Design and Construction being held in Toronto in November 2019. This is one of the opportunities we have to thank the Mining Companies of the world as well as the industries and companies we serve for their support of the mining contracting and shaft sinking business of Canada and the world at large. Many of these companies are represented here today. Without your support many of the innovations we will talk about today would not be possible. We would also like to thank all the companies that work with us in our business including all the contractors and suppliers who provide the various services we require. These include equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, project management companies and suppliers large and small who cater to our every need as quickly as possible. Without all these partners we would not be as good as we are. Many of these companies are our sponsors this week. Thank you from all of us! This is also an appropriate time to pause and think about those Shaft Sinkers we have lost and those who have been injured on our projects around the world. Please bow your head and remember the Shaft Sinkers you have worked with, who did not return home or those who returned home injured. Think about how we can continue the work of making shafts safer every day as we go forward with our projects so everyone goes home to their families safe and sound. Pause for a minute and thank you. The subject matter we have chosen to discuss today is “Shaft Sinking in the Next Five Decades”. How will the work be done, how fast will it be done, what will it cost, and why we think this may occur? It is appropriate to consider this over the next few days with this auspicious group we have assembled. Today, we will look back at all the advances that have been made over the last many years and look ahead to the future to attempt to predict what shaft sinking will look like in 2070. When I look around the room I recognize that many of us will not be around then so we need not worry about being wrong. Suffice it to say that the next 50 years will be very interesting and exciting for the shaft sinking business."

"The Murray Brook gold mine operated from September 1989 to March 1991. Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of gossan were mined from an open pit and treated at a rate of 900 tonnes per day. The facility applied an agglomeration vat-leaching cyanidation plant for gold and silver recovery. The leached ore or tailings were rinsed of residual gold and cyanide and placed on an adjacent clay lined pad for storage and containment. A 50,000 tonne heap-leach demonstration project was constructed at Murray Brook in 1992 to recover copper and zinc from ore located in a sulfide-rich zone occurring beneath the gossan. The operation proved unsuccessful because of poor recoveries and low metal prices. The project terminated in the same year.A corporate decision was made in September 1999 to undertake complete and final reclamation of the Murray Brook site. Jacques Whitford and Associates Limited were contracted to develop the final reclamation plan and to assist the company in presenting the plan to the New Brunswick government for approval. The government approved the plan in January 2000. Two important reclamation issues were the mobility of mercury from the gossan tailings and the potential of acid mine drainage from exposed sulfides. The mine site is situated upstream of a productive river system, and the issue or impact of chemistry changes to the environment over the long term became an overriding factor in the development of the reclamation plan.A resource assessment of the gossan tailings in 1999 indicated an average concentration of mercury of 40 ppm. The mercury occurred naturally as the mineral cinnabar, but the exposure to residual cyanide (less than 10 ppm) over several years in the pile has likely caused much of the cinnabar to decompose into more soluble mercury forms. The reclamation plan specified the replacement of all sulfides to the pit followed by approximately 600,000 tonnes of gossan. To ensure “fixing” of the mercury, the gossan was replaced in compacted lifts and both the remaining pile and that replaced to the pit covered with available till and compacted. The reclamation work was successfully completed in September 2000 and the chemistry of the receiving environment will be monitored over a three-year period, after which the company expects to achieve walk away conditions."

"Mineralogical evaluation of ores containing platinum-group elements (PGE) is fraught with difficulties because of the low grades (often 1-3 g/t PGE), dispersal of PGE (usually as finegrained platinum-group minerals [PGM]), as well as occurring in solid solution in some base metal sulphides (BMS) such as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Mineral processors not only need to know how the PGE are distributed, that is, their mineralogical distribution, but the grain sizes of the PGM, and especially the associated minerals.After obtaining a representative ground sample, common approaches include studying a large number of polished or polished thin sections, concentration of the PGM and sulphides by different gravity methods (e.g., heavy liquids, elutriation, micro-panning) and study of the produced concentrates. Unfortunately, these methods often do not produce concentrations that are sufficiently representative of a particular ore. The newly developed patented technology of hydroseparation (Rudashevsky et al., 2002) is especially effective at making concentrations of PGM over a wide range of concentrations (down to <300 ppb Pt+Pd+Au) and size fractions, including <45µm (down to a few micrometres in size), a size range not possible by other techniques. This water-based environmentally friendly laboratory technique provides a large amount of data from samples, which can range from 5 to 1000g, giving confidence to extrapolation of results to bench-scale and larger test work, especially when combined with quantitative image analysis to determine modal percent of major minerals and mineral liberation data, needed to predict the minimum (K80) and optimum (K40) grinds. INTRODUCTIONThe invention of the electron microprobe in the early 1960’s and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometers (EDS) in the 1970’s presented mineralogists with powerful tools permitting them to obtain chemical and surface area data on minute amounts of minerals in situ, in a non-destructive manner. An area of process mineralogy that has very much benefited from this new technology was the characterization and understanding of PGM species, resulting in rapid growth of newly characterized species (Figure 1). Recognition of the first PGM may be ascribed to the Spanish explorer Ulloa in 1748, who described native platinum from South America. The second PGM (laurite, RuS2) was only recognised in 1866 by Wöhler in placer samples from Borneo (now Kalimantan) and the third (sperrylite, PtAs2) by Wells in 1889 from the Sudbury Ni-Cu sulphide deposits. The discovery of the important Pt-Pd deposits in the Bushveld Igneous Complex led to the characterization of the important Pt-Pd sulphides (cooperite, PtS2 in 1928 and braggite, (Pt,Pd)S2 in 1932). By the early 1960’s, only about 20 PGM were recognised, and many later proved to be poorly or incompletely characterized. Thus, the introduction of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) led to a 50% increase of known PGM, as shown in a 1972 review on PGM (Cabri, 1972). At the time of the next review in 1981 (Cabri, 1981) the number of known PGM had grown to 75 and as of 2002, it had increased to 109 (Cabri, 2002). A practical simple method is proposed to estimate the tensile strength (st) of strong brittle rocks from the strength ratio of R= sc/st = 8 sc/sci, where sc is the uniaxial compressive strength and sci is the crack initiation stress in an uniaxial compression test. 8 is the Griffith strength ratio and the term sc/sci accounts for the difference of crack growth or propagation in tension and compression in uniaxial compression tests. sci can be reliably obtained from volumetric strain measurement or acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. With the strength ratio R determined, the tensile strength can be indirectly obtained from the result of uniaxial compression tests. In addition, a practical estimate of the Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi is presented and it is suggested that mi = 12 sc/sci can be applied to strong, brittle rocks in high confinement zone and mi = 8 sc/sci can be applied to low confinement to tension zones. It is found that the predicted tensile strengths and Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi using this method are in good agreement with test data. The rock strength parameters like st and mi, which require specialty tests such as direct tensile (or Brazilian) and triaxial compression tests for their determination, can be reasonably estimated from uniaxial compression tests.

"RÉSUMÉDurant les 10 dernières années, les améliorations dans le contrôle des limites des sautages et les arpentages après l’exploitation ont fourni des informations préalables et post facto sur les limites minières réalisées par rapport à la planification, plus particulièrement pour les grands chantiers exploités par les méthodes chambres vides et sous-niveaux. Cependant, peu de recherches ont été faites pour améliorer la délimitation du minerai, l’estimation des ressources et des réserves, les études de faisabilité et la récupération minière dans d’autres types de gisements. Il faudra d’abord expliciter les impacts des lacunes, en quantité et en qualité, de l’information géologique et de l’échantillonnage sur le rendement de l’extraction. Il faudra également remplacer la notion de « dilution générale » par celles de « dilution » et de « perte de minerai ». Les impacts des lacunes observées sur l’exploitation des gisements d’or filoniens sont démontrés par une simulation basée sur des résultats d’études antérieures à la mine Thompson d’Inco, des impacts financiers de densités d’information moindre et par des analyses des valeurs actualisées nettes (VAN) de deux cas types.Deux gisements similaires, de 3 m et 6 m de largeur et exploités par chambres vides sont étudiés, en prenant pour cas de base la délimitation sur maille de 7,5 m (25 pi.) et en étudiant les impacts des limites moins précises supportées par une maille de 15 m (50 pi.), en assumant que ces imprécisions moyennes de +/- 0,62 m se transforment soit en surestimation (dilution), soit en sous-estimation (pertes de minerai).Les impacts d’information moins précise ont été beaucoup plus forts sur le gisement plus étroit : autant la dilution que les pertes de métal ont diminué les VAN du gisement de 3 m de 39,27 % et 45,41 % respectivement, tandis que les VAN du gisement de 6 m ont été diminuées que de 12,84 % et 11,55 %.Ces impacts des valeurs actualisées nettes diminuées justifient et exigent des efforts plus systématiques pour s’assurer que les travaux de mise en valeur et les études de faisabilité soient réalisés de façon requise pour optimiser l’exploitation et offrir aux investisseurs des rendements compétitifs par rapport à ceux des autres secteurs industriels. ABSTRACTDuring the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits.However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses have not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently are poorly documented, the use of these terms is reviewed.Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco’s Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delineation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study.The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit"
