A project to develop the Zinclor electrowinning cell to industrial size is being conducted at Tecnicas Reunidas' Research and Development Centre with Spanish Ministry of Industry support. This project is the final development phase in zinc electrowinning from a chloride medium, the highest ZINCLOR technology development level prior to the industrial scale having already been reached. This paper covers the outcomes and conclusions corresponding to project Phases 1 and 2: Process Selection and Industrial Electrodes (1 m2) design and testing. The most important achievement reached is that there are presently available industrial cathodes and anodes for the Zinclor diaphragm cell giving an optimum response for zinc chloride electrowinning with unit power consumptions between 2.65 and 2.80 kWh/kg Zn, depending on the diaphragm type. Standard electrolysis conditions were: 65 g/L ZnC12, 3 g/L HCl, 160 g/L NaCl, 350 g/t Zn arabig gum as the addition agent, 36¦C, and 400 A/m2 current density. The selection of electrodes, diaphragms and organic additives for the industrial scale tests have been optimised. The complete electrowinning cell development, with electrodes having an active area of I m2, enables the evaluation of Zinclor Technology application for industrial processes.

Background A recent development in many industries,' including the mining industry, has been ever increasing acceptance and adoption of extended (12-hour) shifts and compressed work cycles compensated by more time off work by employees between cycles. In the Western Australian mining industry development of `long-distance-commute' (LDC) coincided with adoption of 12-hour rotating shifts. Preludes to LDC were the `construction-style' rosters with two crews plus allowance for annual and sick leave relievers working the statutory 13 consecutive shifts followed by one shift off. Crews rotated day to night shift weekly or at fortnightly intervals. Average hours of 72 to 78 per week were common. The author had personal experience working these rosters in the East Pilbara of Western Australia from 1977 to 1982. Workers tolerated these rosters until a suitable combination of frustration, boredom, despair and the `Five Grand Fever' triggered them to `pull the pin' and head for relaxation in Bangkok, Manila, Nimbin, or Margaret River according to their personal tastes.

“TerraFlowingTM” is a dewatering process that addresses both the value proposition of Tailings as a Resource™, and the safe storage of tailings. “TerraFlowingTM” incorporates two stages of cyclone dewatering followed by centrifugation of the final dilute tailings stream. In this process three dewatered tailings streams are produced; a primary cyclone underflow, a secondary cyclone underflow and a centrifuge pulp. These three streams can be combined, or used, in various configurations to achieve different outcomes. The ability to vary the cyclone and centrifuge operations and configuration enables this process to deal with tailings feed variations in particle size distribution and mineralogy and deliver consistency, or design variations, in particle size distribution, tailings solids concentrations and recoveries. Water recovery can be up to 85% of the total water in the tailings with a stackable final tailings product achieved if the three tailings streams are combined in the maximum solids concentration configuration. The primary cyclone can be operated to deliver a particle size distribution suitable for tailings storage facility embankment construction or alternatives such as concrete structures or shotcrete for support. The secondary cyclone underflow and centrifuge pulp is suitable for beaching deposition within the tailings storage facility.

Multi-sensor fusion visual perception technology significantly enhances visual perception capabilities in complex and harsh environments by combining visual data from different sensors. This technology is especially useful for scenarios where traditional single visible light sensors, such as standard cameras, struggle due to poor lighting, adverse visual conditions, or other visual obstructions. In environments with low light, smoke, or dust, the performance of conventional visible light sensors degrades, limiting their application. By integrating data from various sensors like radar, infrared thermal imaging, and others, multi-sensor fusion technology provides a more comprehensive and complementary visual solution. This fusion not only enhances the robustness of visual systems but also greatly expands their potential applications in fields like visual surveillance. In recent years, deep learning methods have become the mainstream technology for addressing multi-sensor fusion issues, demonstrating significant advantages in adaptive feature selection compared to traditional machine learning methods. However, deep learning-based multi-sensor fusion algorithms still face several challenges. The design of network structures is often redundant, lacking effective screening of useful components within multimodal information. Mainstream fusion algorithms focus excessively on improving display effects without adequately considering the needs of downstream applications and tasks. Existing fusion perception algorithms are generally designed for open visual scenes and lack targeted design for complex visual degradation factors present in tunnel environments of mines. Current deep learning methods for designing multi-sensor fusion networks heavily rely on manual experience to create fusion modules. This reliance increases the complexity of network design and can lead to redundancy. Redundant network modules are difficult to identify in end-to-end learning tasks at this stage, significantly slowing down network inference and potentially interfering with the output of fusion perception. Additionally, training these fusion modules typically requires large amounts of well-annotated multimodal data, further increasing implementation difficulty and cost. For instance, the fusion network design proposed by Li and Wu (2018) focuses on extracting multimodal fusion features, while Zhao et al (2020) introduced a feature decomposition mechanism in the feature fusion and extraction modules. Researchers like Zhang and Ma (2021), Xu et al (2020), and Liu et al (2017) have attempted to improve network structures through dense cascades and the introduction of residual connections. Although these methods have improved the handling of multimodal information to some extent, they still face limitations in distinguishing between useful and redundant information, with redundancy persisting in network designs. Ideally, the design of fusion networks should be more intelligent, guiding network structure design heuristically based on the importance of different modal information for the current task. This would reduce information redundancy and network weights, requiring the development of new algorithms or frameworks capable of automatically identifying and optimising fusion strategies, thereby reducing dependence on manual experience while improving fusion efficiency and network performance. Minerals are valuable resources and critical elements for a broad range of biological and technological applications, including technological developments to improve energy efficiency and the global movement to promote a low-carbon economy. However, in order to extract these critical metals, large amounts of waste and toxic chemicals are generated, as well as the use of high energy and large amounts of water consumption. Froth flotation is one of the most commonly used processes to separate and collect high-value minerals, but it still has some limitations, including low flotation efficiency performances using existing collectors and other reagents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design and develop new metal-specific collectors to more efficiently separate and recover valuable minerals and to allow bulk water recovery from flocculated tailings. In this research, we propose to use our newly designed and synthesised novel collectors derived from a type of vitamin E (α-tocopherol), a relatively inexpensive and non-toxic natural molecule. As a potential collector-building block, α-tocopherol has a long hydrophobic carbon chain that facilitates the attachment to air bubbles during the froth flotation process. In addition, the phenol group of this molecule can be easily modified to incorporate various functional groups for targeting different types of minerals. Furthermore, α-tocopherol can be converted into a monomer for polymerisation by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) process, which can provide us with polymer based-collectors with high precision control of molecular weight and architecture. So far, small-scale qualitative experiments on α-tocopherol-based collectors have been performed with good results, which indicates the feasibility of these compounds as novel collectors for improved froth flotation processes.

Ore reserve estimation is a procedure involving data collection, data storage and judgement and assumptions about geology mining and metallurgy. Calculations are based on these assumptions and an economic analysis on projected cash flows is carried out. Ore reserve estimation must therefore be subjective and will always depend on the extent to which the assumptions used in arriving at the estimate are correct. This paper is an attempt to summarise the many aspects that can contribute to ore reserve problems and to offer some suggestions on how to minimise these problems. For further details on specific concepts readers are referred to the detailed descriptions in the referenced papers.

The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

The most important period however has been the 1980s and so far the 1990s where, in addition to the of some more rigorous legislation, we have seen the practical application of environmental management/rehabilitation Techniques.

The Australian minerals sector has a shortage of skilled professionals to satisfy an industry that is experiencing renewed vitality. Graduate numbers are low throughout Australia and the world, while economic rationalisation is seeing many educational institutions downsize, or even close, their minerals-related programs. In addition to requiring more entry-level graduates, minerals producers are looking to update the skills of their current workforce to keep up with the industryÆs continuing technological revolution. To address the issue the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) endorsed collaboration between several Australian minerals producers and a team of universities to generate the Mineral Tertiary Education Council, or MTEC. MTEC recently initiated a venture to increase the availability of professionals with relevant skills to the minerals industry. Primarily aimed at delivering postgraduate programs, the initiative will allow graduates from other disciplines to æconvertÆ to the minerals sector as well as provide professional development training to an existing work force. This venture represents a novel approach in that courses will be delivered by more than one institution and will employ innovative teaching materials with flexible and remote delivery formats. The programs will cater specially for professional development in the minerals sector, which generally requires high flexibility due to the nature of work conditions and locations.

In large coal strip mines, there are many different processes at work: stripping, overburden removal using trucks/shovels, cast blasting, slot dozer pushing, more fragmentation and further truck/shovel benches. A key component to each of these steps is the use of machines. In modern operations, most machine costs are tracked within Enterprise systems that transact costs and repair work order management. Similarly, in contemporary mines most machines are tracked using technology that provides precise performance measures for each key process. Such technologies include productivity monitors on draglines, dozers and drills and fleet management systems for trucks and shovels. Linking these two sources of seemingly disparate data û costs and performance by machine û would allow for the precise calculation of unit costs by specific machine. This is similar to an activity-based costing system, except in this machine-based system, calculations are made at an even finer granular level. There are many uses for such an integrated information system in mine planning and performance management, both in real-time and through historical analysis.A real-time fleet costs (FLC) measurement process was developed as part of a larger blending-related, multi-million dollar project centred on a centralised remote control room developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management Mine Control Center. The FLC component of the overall blending system would allow a mine controller to manage the equipment fleet by viewing its cost in real time and, when mixed with other revenue-related components, the exact profit. For example, a mine controller may show high utilisation while still maintaining a production surplus. This could occur, for example, if the equipment is driven long distances. This might appear in traditional performance metrics as æhigh production performanceÆ, but in reality may prove less profitable. This paper discusses the technical development of the FLC, its deployment and its impact on controller performance, and compares mine profitability before and after its application.

AMC has completed a number of backfill options studies, including several in recent years for large, three-dimensional orebodies involving total extraction by longhole open stoping with backfill. This has led to the development of a thorough review methodology that assists in the selection of the most appropriate backfill system and the most economic mixes to achieve the required performance. A recently developed design tool has simplified the calculation of backfill strengths for various exposure dimensions and automatically determines strengths incrementally over the height of a stope. Using a generic orebody with a plan dimension of 120 m wide by 360 m long, several different stoping layouts have been analysed to determine the effect of stope dimensions and sequencing on backfill strength requirements. This has been done for stope heights from 50 m to 300 m, in 50 m increments. The required strengths have been calculated in slices and summarised for each stope in four equal layers. The average strength requirement for each layout at each stope height has been compared graphically. For all stope heights, a panel stope layout that minimises the proportion of primary stopes results in a lower average strength requirement than grid layouts on a checkerboard pattern. However, for very high stopes, smaller plan dimensions become more economic. The increase in required strength with stope height is non-linear, making taller stopes potentially more attractive. The main cost factor in most backfills is the rate of binder addition, which is closely related to the strength required. By choosing a layout that minimises the backfill strength requirement, significant savings in binder addition rates and overall costs can be achieved. These must, of course, be weighed against other factors to determine the optimum stoping layout and backfill system.

The main asset of a mining company is the mineral resource; without resources there is no mining business and the infrastructure is useless. In this context the role of the mining geologist is to always keep the resource inventory to an optimum level for the mining business and to maximise the transformation of the resources into reserves in a multi- disciplinary work environment. In short, a ægood mining geologist has to always provide the best ore to the millÆ.To do his/her work properly, several technical skills are needed: to know how to observe and describe nature in order to optimise the data acquisition process, particularly when mapping; to have a good understanding of natural variability in order to develop proper sampling strategies and sample preparation protocols to minimise all the errors generated by the sampling process; to have a good understanding of assaying practices: their limitations as well as their assaying errors; to carefully and properly store the geological data and information and to preserve the geological patrimony; to fully understand ore forming processes to generate the best possible geoscientific models, which are fundamental for the mining business; to fully understand the consequences of the geoscientific models along the value chain from rock to cathodes; and to continuously validate and improve geological practices and models by continuous data collection and observation of geo- mining-metallurgy processes. Some very important behavioural competencies are also needed:long-term vision, passion for excellence and value generation, strategic influence, systemic and innovative thinking, and knowledge and experience transfer. Last but not least, it is important to point out that a deep knowledge of the mining business is essential to add value by using geology best practices.

For the past 150 years, drilling and blasting has been an integral part of the underground mining industry in Australia. Ever since Busby's Bore was developed using black powder to supply Sydney with water, miners have been drilling holes, filling them with explosives and blasting the rock into a manageable size. The drilling was fairly straight forward but the explosives were always a mysterious commodity. It worked, but how and why? The explosives industry is now working much closer to the mining industry to dispel these mysteries and also to aid the advancement of explosive technology. This paper looks at the results of these advances in the form of explosives, accessories and blasting systems.

While the new Minister of Economic Development sends his apologies at being unable to speak at this Conference, I am delighted to present on his behalf. The Ministry of Economic Development is not only responsible for managing the Crown mineral estate, but also for developing initiatives and policies to promote regional economic development and for managing the GovernmentÆs broader economic development strategy. IÆd like to talk to you today about the critical links that need to exist between these three areas.   I am going to start with a question for all of you. What do these towns have in common? +        Waiuku, +        Thames, +        New Plymouth, +        Nelson, +        Greymouth, +        Arrowtown, +        Reefton, +        Palmerston, and +        Dunedin.   The answer is minerals. These towns were nearly all founded on the back of minerals and mining. In the case of Greymouth it was gold that brought the people to the mouth of the Grey River and it is coal that sustains the town.   In 1870 the town of Shortland had 20 000 people, 90 hotels and was twice the size of Auckland. We now know Shortland as Thames, and of course Auckland is considerably larger. One wonders whether the good folk of Shortland suffered from ætraffic jamsÆ with 90 pubs to navigate between. Gold mining in the Aorere River near Collingwood led early entrepreneurs to develop the land surrounding Nelson as a food basket to sustain the mining population. Nelson is still thriving on this legacy today. The town of Palmerston was founded in 1862 as a stopping point for gold miners heading into central Otago. The gold rush made Dunedin New ZealandÆs first highly industrialised city. Reefton on the West Coast was the first town in New Zealand to have electric lights and in the recent past we were wondering whoÆd be left to turn them off. New Plymouth, and Waiuku are still known as energy and mining centres.   By contrast once thriving towns like Capleston, Canvastown and Blackball are just names on a map now, and at the extreme you have places like Waiuta which has been reclaimed by the West Coast forest. Queenstown was built off the back of the gold rush, but by 1900 with the gold gone, only 190 people lived there yet Queenstown has managed to rebuild itself thanks to some other stunning natural assets. These examples help illustrate three key points that I am sure will each be extensively linked with our minerals and mining industries. First, NZÆs development and that of its regions has been, and continues to be, inextricably linked with our minerals and mining industries.   Second, things change. Sectors, regions and countries must continually adapt and improve if the are to avoid the fate of the Waiutas of this world. And third, the development challenges faced by NZ and its mining industry in the 21st century are vastly more complex than in the past. Governments and industry alike must balance and respond to a range of domestic and international environmental, cultural, economic and other interests and considerations. If you thought of your industry as æjust digging holes in the groundÆ then you may as well simply stick your head in one!

In mining, grade control generally focuses on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block models with little or no attention given to how the materials are being excavated from the ground. In the process of loading trucks, the underlying variability of the individual bucket load will determine the variability of truck payload. Hence, accurate material movement demands a good knowledge of the excavation process and the buckets’ interaction with the environment. However, equipment frequently goes into off-nominal states due to unexpected delays, disturbances or faults. The large amount of such disturbances causes information loss that reduces the statistical power and biases estimates, leading to increased uncertainty in the production. A reliable method that inferences the missing knowledge about the interaction between the machine and the environment from the available data sources, is vital to accurately model the material movement. In this study, a twostep method was implemented that performed unsupervised clustering and then predicted the missing information. The first method is Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) based spatial clustering which divides the diggers’ and buckets’ positional data into connected loading segments. Clear patterns of segmented bucket dig positions were observed. The second model utilised Gaussian process regression which was trained with the clustered data and the model was then used to infer the mean locations of the test clusters. Bucket dig locations were then simulated at the inferred mean locations for different durations and compared against the known bucket dig locations. This method was tested at an open pit mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in inferencing the missing information of bucket-environment interactions and therefore enables miners to continuously track the material movement.

QueenslandÆs new safety legislation for metalliferous and coal mining (Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, together with the Regulations) came into effect on 16 March 2001. The legislation places clear obligations on mine owners, operators and workers to have a safe place of work and to manage risks to safety and health. It also places obligations on contractors, designers and providers of services. The legislation is non-prescriptive in that it states what outcomes must be achieved and not what must be done. The key issue is that the risk of injury to people must be at an acceptable level. The legislation creates a Mines Inspectorate with powers of inspection and audit of mines, their safety management systems and the management of risks. Auditing of the risk management process is carried out against standard risk management techniques and directives for corrective action may be issued when audits reveal non-compliance or unacceptable levels of risk.

Although we have access to a wide range of sophisticated process design and improvement tools in combination with a significant range of case studies, the mineral resource industry still manages to be plagued by the negative publicity surrounding operating plant failures because they were neither smart nor safe, together with proposed projects that fail at the first or second hurdle. The general public and the finance industry are generally totally uniformed about projects that ramp-up to name plate capacity on time and on budget and even more so when ahead of schedule and under budget. As the saying goes, good news does not cut the mustard.The following is a summary of the author’s sometimes jaundiced view about why metallurgical plants do not live up to their technical and commercial expectations. In no way should the summary be construed as a negative reflection on the skills of the metallurgical profession. Rather, it is to be taken as a positive acknowledgement of those skills and is intended to highlight some of the major considerations that need to be assessed as a potential project transforms into a sustainable technical and commercial reality.While a considerable portion of the summary is directed at developing hydrometallurgical flowsheets, the general principles are equally important to all aspects of extractive metallurgy.For convenience, the summary covers the following five basic discussion points – project, people, process, patents and politicians.
