The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomor-: phological element formed since late'Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile'and monazite associated with a series'of raised'shorelines. The:location'of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping*Archaen-granite/granulite complex and a sea':current pattern'determined'by'local geography and a prevailing wind direction.'-A progression from medium. to high titanium ilmenite is'evident parallelled by. progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Nelsen, Porter and Wilson (1996) provided some preliminary concepts for the design of the Melbourne City Link tunnels. At that time, the City Link project was in the early design phase whereas now it is nearing completion. This paper provides details of the actual design adopted for the various sections of the tunnels as well as some commentary on the design process. The tunnels form a critical element of the project and the design of both driven and cut and cover tunnel sections is a significant factor contributing to successful project execution. Geology, hydrogeology, site constraints, traffic management and program were important design inputs. Design for the cut and cover sections in particular varied significantly in response to these differing inputs.

This paper provides an overview of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling capability developed by CSIRO with the aim of improving the knowledge of flow migration dynamics within longwall goaf areas. The CFD models can be used to study the ingress of oxygen into the goaf in different ventilation scenarios and goaf drainage arrangements. This approach not only helps the design of effective gas control strategies but also the management of spontaneous combustion risk in the goaf. Innovative goaf inertisation strategies have been developed and implemented during longwall sealing operations. Work is continuing to develop general guidelines of proactive goaf inertisation strategies to suppress the development of spontaneous heating behind active longwall faces.

Marketing of mineral products has not yet succumbed to the degree of pre- dictability and exactitude that is fam- iliar to the engineer or metallurgist in pursuing their profession. Whilst the Great Market of the world economy dic- tates circumstances for the sale of min- eral products, there are more than just buyers and sellers in the determination of the revenue received by the producer. For the engineer or metallurgist he will be required to gain an understanding of these participants and of the peculiar languages of the market place. This will be only one of his tasks in learn- ing to communicate with society, as his responsibilities increase as he climbs the ladder of success. There is un- doubtedly a need for better statistical information so that producers and sell- ers can make an appropriate and earlier response to market conditions. There is in addition, a need for more aggressive concern by raw material producers for the development and promotion of better end use of their products. Undoubtedly the marketing of mineral products will be more influenced by the direct involv- ment of government agencies than has been the case in the past. Whilst that 1. Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

INTRODUCTIONDuring the past few years there has been considerable interest in developing the so-called direct reduction processes for treating iron oxides. The various methods proposed were recently reviewed by Scortecci and Palazzi (1960).In particular the application of fluidized bed techniques received considerable attention and, on first examination, this seems to be the ideal method 'of dealing with fine iron oxides. Several difficulties (e.g. product agglomeration) require the method to be investigated further before its potentialities can be fully assessed.PROPOSED FLUIDIZED BED REDUCTION PROCESSESBrassert and De Jahn (1951) were among the earliest to suggest the use of fluidized beds for the reduction of iron ore to metallic iron. Their patent was followed by many others proposing similar concepts, mainly from Lewis (1955), Ogorzaly (19.56), Shipley (1956), Agarwal (1960'), Osborn (1958), Texaco Development Corporation (1956) and Stelling (1957).The H-iron process (Squires and J ohnson, 1957; Lubker and Bruland, 1960) is the only scheme that has been an economic success. With ever-increasing energy costs and the modern focus on system efficiencies, the practice of æventilation-on-demandÆ is gaining momentum. Several examples, ranging from paper studies to practical examples have been recorded and another recent case study is presented here to encourage the practice. In comparison, æcooling-on-demandÆ has received far less attention. This paper explores the possible merits of this practice by investigating the theoretical response of cool intake airways and the thermal interaction between the air and the rock, in order to gain a better understanding of the system behaviour and to quantify the possible savings. A case study is presented that demonstrates the improvements that can be achieved. Recent developments that allow live interaction between ventilation network models and on-line monitoring systems, have the potential for intelligent active control and alarming of ventilation and cooling networks. This will facilitate and maximise the benefits to be derived from ventilation and cooling-on-demand.

The past year has been a difficult one for the mining industry in this country, but an active and successful one for the Branch. Membership has continued to increase, albeit at a slower rate than last year, and with the increase almost all from student membership. I dwelt at some length last year on the continued increase in student membership, which I ascribed largely to deliberate policies adopted by the Branch to foster this area of membership. I don't propose to reiterate these, suffice it to say that as usual, the Otago School of Mines has been a prolific source of student members, and it will be a pity if this source dries up û more on this subject later. In fact, students form just on 29 per cent of the Branch's total membership û a far higher percentage than for any other Branch in the Institute, whose membership as a whole comprises only ten per cent students.

Pit optimisation algorithms are designed to produce a pit with maximum value, but for certain minerals like iron ore, limestone, coal, etc, it is also necessary that the designed pit contains ore which meets the customer's chemical specifications. This paper describes a technique of using linear programming for blending optimisation and the Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm (as in Whittle's 3D software) for pit optimisation in tandem, to achieve pit designs of targeted grade specifications.

This paper describes a multi-lift bench stoping method introduced recently to extract the narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were chief mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The benching methods had improved both the economy scale and safety of the mining operation. The multi-lift benching method combines a number of bench lifts into a single stope to further improve the operational efficiency. Three stopes in the initial multi-lift benching trials are described.

Geotechnical practice combines the site engineering geological model with engineering design and operations to control risk. The responsibility of the geotechnical professional is to present relevant engineering geological information to an engineer to effectively impact an outcome. Return is enhanced by understanding expected operating and capital cost due to ground conditions.   Risk is effectively communicated by a successful geotechnical practitioner. In a mining environment the need is to assess ground conditions accurately and quickly, and to effectively communicate expected ground response due to mining. A good engineering geological model includes a description of geotechnical engineering parameters to design assuming reasonable expected soil, rock and water conditions. Pit slopes are steepened, stope spans widened and waste foundations and land forms are constructed all under geotechnical control.   The responsibility of the geotechnical professional is to collect, assess and disseminate relative engineering geological information. The geotechnical professional is a person advising on ground related engineering, and generally operates within geology and engineering end members.   Return is better assessed on an understanding of ground cost. In operations the goal is to meet production at lower cost. In evaluation, regional and exploration geology, mine design and expected operational factors influence expected cost and project return. Return allows companies to meet shareholder expectations, attract equity to develop and add value to the community.   This paper presents a discussion with some examples to present an approach and design philosophy for geotechnical practice in the mining industry.

This paper critically reviews the role of institutional research contractors (eg universities and the CSIRO) in the delivery of effective research, development and demonstration outcomes in mineral and coal processing to the Australian mineral industry. The criteria by which such R&D is justified, and the problems of quantifying the benefits of such research, are considered. Third-party funding mechanisms such as NERDDP and AMIRA are reviewed in the context of the difficulty of setting national research priorities. Some case studies are presented which illustrate both the problems and the advantages of institutional research for industry. The transfer of research outcomes to industry is identified as a significant problem which limits the effectiveness of all institutional research. Other topics reviewed include research management, the relationship between industrial companies and their research contractors, and the real costs of research. The paper offers suggestions for the ingredients needed for a successful industry-institution relationship, based on the Australian experience. It is concluded that the Australian model for this relationship is a very effective one, although there is still room for improvement.

In this paper is given a general description of the Black Star copper orebody, its relation to the lead orebodies and the controlling factors in the mineralisation.Copper ore, in the form of chalcopyrite, was first noted at Mount Isa in 1930 during the surface drilling campaign to prove the downward continuation of the silver-Iead-zinc orebodies.Details of the occurrence are set out in table 1.Other sub-commercial widths were also disclosed and examination of these occurrences showed that commercial mineralisation could not be expected within 800 ft. of the surface. It was therefore decided that further exploration was not warranted until underground workings had advanced to this horizon.Detailed surface mapping showed two small outcrops of the host rock of the copper orebody. One occurrence, 50 ft. x 75 ft., was of quartz, with leaching suggesting former dolomite. Another outcrop, further north and west of silicified shale, with low grade oxidised copper, has recently been found. Hydrometallurgy has a history of over 300 years with copper leaching and cementation having been exploited in Spain as far back as 1670. Since then, hydrometallurgy has become an integral, expanding branch of extractive metallurgy. This paper reviews major developments in hydrometallurgy over the past century with emphasis on recent commercial developments and their impact on the mining and metals industries. The environment in which these developments has taken place has changed significantly in the past two decades and many factors, often non-technical, have emerged as constraints on the operation of existing plants and the expansion and development of new hydrometallurgical operations. Finally, a number of possible new developments that will shape the future of hydrometallurgy in the new millennium are discussed, particularly as they relate to the assimilation of technical advances in other areas of science and engineering. The impact of current trends in the education of hydrometallurgists and the provision of research in support of these future developments is also addressed.

The 'MAGNADET' to provide a safe enhanced protection extraneous currents, electricity and radiodetonator was designed electric detonator with against the effects of current leakage, static frequency energy.It has found a particular niche in shaft sinking operations and Mount Isa Mines initiated trials of the system in 1983 as part of the design work for the 3000/3500 orebody access shaft.Initial surface blasts indicated a number of significant advantages which were confirmed during the bench and concrete phase of the M37 shaft sink. Ore reserves at the Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation are estimated using the polygonal method for calculating areas of influence of drillholes. All raw assay and survey data are stored on one disk pack on the Company's CYBER 73 computer located in Perth, about 600 km from Kambalda. The initial step involving the computer is to search all assay data and calculate all potential ore-grade intersections. As the orebodies are thin, structurally complex and many are in close stratigraphic proximity, the selection of intersections which have the best grade over at least a minimum mining width involves complex logic. The orientation of an ore surface at each drill intersection point and a zone code are added to each intersection by the geologist from geological plans prepared for each ore surface. The orientation data together with downhole surveys enables the calculation of inter- section true widths and the zone code links each recalculated intersection to the appropriate ore surface.

The classic description of Project Finance as "the reliance by lenders on the cashflow of a project, supported by the assets of the project with no recourse to the project sponsor's corporate balance sheet" has, like most other terms in the finance industry, evolved through recent usage. The area now under most scrutiny is the sharing of risks between parties either most able to take them or prepared to accept payment for them. Creativity in, and flexibility of financing structures have enabled project lending to continue under a dramatically different economic outlook. The diminishing competitiveness of the Australian producers in a global market place of uncertain commodity prices has discouraged the advancement of many large scale resource projects. The majority of new project financings has been designed to assist the relatively small company promote and develop its first projects. New trends- are emerging in four areas: sources of capital; borrowing structure; financing instruments (securitisation); and risk underpinning. As project financing becomes more widely used, the range of interested financiers grows. New initiatives contribute to its development and evolution with a view to increase effectiveness to the sponsor of any new venture.

A real Dorothy Dix title has been selec- ted for this paper. It has the advantage, however, of being capable of being interpreted in many different ways and hence I can select my own approach. You probably are thinking that this topic would be more appropriately handled by an Accountant. I wish to make it clear at the outset that I am not skilled in the sometimes mysterious ways of Accountants - likewise that profession frequently has difficulty in pinning down economists. We have our own strange ideas about profits, marginal efficiencies, cost/benefit analysis etc. What follows is in the main a mixture of two disciplines, probably in a form that few of the purists from either side would accept. Nor do I expect the reader to accept my own prejudices. The paper is designed to stimulate thought and discussion'on the subject. Emotive words such as "profit" and "loss" make for wide differences of opinion. At the time of writing there is a surprising degree of acceptance of the viewpoint that profits in Australia are too low and one is tempted to make this point of near agreement a starting Point.

The Wambo Rail Spur located near Singleton, New South Wales, Australia, runs for approximately 14 km linking the Mt Thorley rail loop and the Wambo Coal Mine. The project involves a 260 m long tunnel in weathered sedimentary and intrusive materials. The tunnel has a low cover and runs under a main highway. This second paper on the project looks into one aspect of the tunnel in detail: the use of shotcrete arch as the primary support for part of the tunnel excavation. The use of shotcrete instead of steel arch, formulation of the material specification, construction sequencing, installation at the excavated face and material testing for verification related to this facet of the project will be discussed in this paper. The tunnel opened in April 2006, and two years on, we briefly reflect on the impact of this design decision on the overall project.

Although geophysical methods of prospecting have proved indispensable in the search or oil deposits elsewhere; it is only 'in recent years that they have been used to any significant extent in Australia. The increase in their use has been quite remarkable over the past two or three years, due in Sao small measure to the encouragement given by means of Commonwealth subsidy. There is no doubt that the use of' geophysical methods will coxi-tinue to increase and this increase could be greatly accelerated as and when oil is discovered in commercial quantities,This review of their use A in Australia and the remarks and statistics are confined to work on the mainland. There has been, a substantial amount of geophysical work in Papua, but as operating conditions are so very different to the mainland Papua has been regarded as a separate province.
