Two well-developed styles of mineralization occur in the Nevados del Famatina mining district, Famatina ranges, La Rioja province, Argentina. Porphyry molybdenum- copper-gold mineralization and high level acid sulphate alteration/mineralization (Nevados del Famatina) are related to intrusion of the Pliocene Mogote rhyodacite porphyry complex. High sulphidation epithermal mineralization (La Mejicana) is developed peripheral to the Nevados del Famatina deposit. Both are hosted mainly by the Ordovician Negro Peinado metapelites.At Nevados del Famatina, five mineralized fracture events have been identified and correlated with four distinct alteration assemblages. Stage I (barren quartz) and stage II (molybdenite¦sphalerite¦pyrite) mineralization are associated with a K-silicate alteration assemblage of K-feldspar+biotite+quartz+magneti te¦ilmenite¦anhydrite. Stage III (bornite+pyrite+sphalerite+molybdenite ¦chalcopyrite¦idaite) and stage IV (chalcopyrite+pyrite +sphalerite+gold¦tennantite-tetrahedrite) mineralization are related to a quartz-sericite assemblage of quartz +phengite+illite+pyrite+rutile. Stage V mineralization is divided into two substages. Stage Va (chalcopyrite +pyrite+sphalerite¦ tennantite-tetrahedrite ¦ tellurides ¦ gold ¦enargite¦famatinite¦stibnite¦molybdenite) is related to a sericite-clay assemblage of quartz+illite+kaolinite ¦montmorillonite¦alunite. Alunite-kaolinite alteration (alunite+pyrophyllite+kaolinite+ aluminum - phosphate -sulphate minerals ¦illite¦fluorite¦corundum¦anhydrite) occurs in the upper part of Nevados del Famatina associated with the later stage Vb (quartz+famatinite +chalcopyrite+covellite + chalcocite ¦ marcasite ¦ enargite ¦ luzonite¦sphalerite¦melnikovite) mineralization.

Australia has been slow in adopting the use of underground space as a part of our urban planning process. Australia has one of the highest levels of tunnel advance per capita per annum in the world, yet the use of underground space in our cities appears difficult for our planners and politicians to comprehend, not withstanding the general availability of good quality rock and contractor expertise in Australia. However, the lack of space in our urban areas is being highlighted as our major cities expand outwards and people and businesses gravitate towards city centres. Typical potential underground space uses include car parking, self-storage and archiving facilities, water storage, underground quarrying, small industrial facilities and another layer of traffic (electric and fuel cell) and services network. Historically, blasting in high density population areas has resulted in blast vibrations and blast overpressures exceeding the limits, which in some case have been set extremely low in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). This makes conventional blasting difficult, often requiring low charge weights per delay and associated small blast sizes and slow advance rates. However, the introduction of new technologies, such as computer aided drilling, electronic delays and low-energy explosives has made this task considerably easier. Although more expensive than conventional blasting, excavation by blasting using these products and technologies in relatively good quality ground is believed, in most cases, to be less than the cost of mechanical excavation. In this paper, the authors look at innovative trends in underground quarrying, underground commercial space and tunnelling and put forward their concept of future excavation demand, future product requirements and technical specifications to the drill and blast community.

The Australian underground coal industry has experienced substantial improvements in longwall productivity and, as such, the methods of providing a safe and productive mine environment have needed to evolve and develop. Whilst the primary method of controlling atmospheric conditions is by airflow it has become impracticable or impossible for the majority of Australian longwall mines to contend with all environmental hazards with primary ventilation alone.If the ventilation circuit cannot provide a safe and productive mine environment at an acceptable cost and circuit duty then supplementary controls are required. Examples include pre-gas drainage, post-gas drainage, gas utilisation, refrigeration and innovative dust control systems. Of the 21 longwall operations surveyed in Australia, there were 13 in New South Wales and eight in Queensland.This study represents a timely opportunity for the industry to examine the primary and supplementary ventilation systems implemented in Australian longwall mines and to discuss how to equip the industry to successfully face the future of underground longwall ventilation management in Australia.CITATION:Webber, M, Belle, B and Rowland, J, 2017. The Junction Reefs gold bearing deposit is situated on the Lyndhurst Mining Field in mid-west New South Wales. It is located within a triangle of three country towns namely, Blayney, Cowra and Canowindra, all three townships are approximately 25 km from the current operational mining leases. The district is well developed, having been settled for more than a cen- tury. However, being close to the Cities of Orange and Bathurst it is real- lised, instantly, that mining leases have been pegged, in this area, almost boundary to boundary. The lease patterns are, with few exceptions, those which had been estab- lished more than seventy-five years ago. These types of lease patterns may not assist the proper exploitation of a large district where there have been many discoveries of gold, copper and other metals.

Design and construction techniques used to develop two highway tunnels in inaccessible mountainous terrain are described. Measures used to adapt the design to the unusual geology and topography are discussed, as well as measures to adapt the construction methods to available equipment, materials, and skills. Sharp local variations in geoloqic conditions resulted in field modifications to both design and construction techniques. The geology is a volcanic ash and breccia-agglomerate at one site, a jointed andesite at the other, which is also the site of a major landslide. Both rock reinforcement in the form of pretensioned and grouted rock bolts with a shotcrete lining,and rock support by struc- tural steel sets with a reinforced concrete lining were used. A canyonside location and high lateral in-situ stresses required modification of design procedures. Pilot tunnels at both sites resulted in adapting the designs to site conditions with large savings in lining costs, disclosing problem areas in advance of the main excavation, and cushioning of blasting pressure to minimize stability problems.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. The removal of airborne pollutants from underground ventilating air is discussed. The work concentrates on the removal of CO, CO2, NOx, SO2, radon gas and respirable carbon particles. The investigation combines techniques for multiple contaminant removal using forced chemical absorption and oxidation. Both dry and wet scrubbing techniques are employed. Mixed success has been achieved in the tests carried out and this paper is seen as a progress report on the work done to date. The interference and interaction of the gases on the individual removal efficiencies is a very important factor in the finalisation of a macro air conditioner (MAC) design for treating underground ventilating air. This necessitates a specific sequence of contaminant removal. Efficiencies are discussed and recommendations made. Wet forced chemical absorption and oxidation processes, though efficient in terms of removal efficiencies, cannot be employed in the confined underground environment due to safety and health risks. Impacts on the internal water reticulation systems of the mine have been analysed to determine the effect of future large-scale macro air conditioning practices, including blow-off liquids discharged into the water circuits. To engineer the safety and health risks out of such designs can be costly and it is for these reasons the research now concentrates on dry scrubbing of the contaminants from the underground ventilating air. The paper concludes with statements on the benefits of macro air conditioning in deep hot mines, in both recirculating and series air ventilation distribution strategies. These benefits include reduced re-entry times after blasting and increased production rate opportunities.

The underground coal mining industry in Australia has, in the last 30 years, undergone a revolution in production methods, techniques and results probably unparalleled elsewhere in the world. It can lay claim not only to leading the fight against pneumoconiosis and setting high safety standards generally, but has at the same time recorded comparatively high rates of increase in output per man shift. The latter has been achieved as a result of progressively matching the latest in production and underground transportation equipment with significant changes in seam development and extraction techniques and the introduction of stress-relieving extraction methods unique to the world scene. However, the seam recovery factor is still too low. Apart from the overall objectives of maximising production and commercial returns with the greatest safety, there must be a concentration towards maximising seam recovery, particularly in high seams. The search will continue for systems which are more completely continuous mining operations than the present stop-go operations, with longwall having long term potential in this regard, but as yet not sufficiently developed to engender confidence for its more general use. Techniques developed in the last 10 years make the development and extraction of deeper seams, perhaps to 2500 feet or more, feasible with continuous miners as well as longwall. The future will see a greater use of continuous shifts at mines, larger mines with more sophisticated management organisation, extensible belts at the face, better systems of immediate roof support at the face, remote operation of face equipment, greater use of roof bolts and the longer roof cables. With commercial confidence in coal mining now virtually assured to at least the turn of the century, the stage is set for heavy capital development in the industry which will undoubtedly include major research into the whole area of mining methods and equipment. We must ensure that our contribution to such research equitably matches other coal producing countries.

In 1972, with the West Lyell Open Pit winding down, mining operations transferred underground. All development tunnelling until the end of the decade was carried out by a fleet of ten pneumatic Jumbos.A decision was made in 1980 to purchase an electric-hydraulic Jumbo and a second was purchased in 1982. Their introduction changed the face of development at Mount Lyell. Significant new demands were placed on main-tenance sections, particularly on electrical reticulation.Subsequently, two further electric-hydraulic Jumbos were purchased from Agnew Mining in 1984, and successfully overhauled and commissioned. As well, two electric-nydraulic production drilling rigs have been purchased. Only one of the original pneumatic Jumbos remains in service.

Coal mining has an impact on the water management of the water scarce Upper Olifants River Catchment. A prefeasibility study was carried out by Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited to establish the water supply and demand in the catchment. A geohydrological model was used for the coalfields to determine the stored water and excess water available. Two distinct collective and treatment systems were proposed for the Witbank and Middelburg municipalities to treat excess water from the Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited. The Emalahleni Water Reclamation Project for Witbank was initiated first. Water management and treatment experience gained at Anglo Coal was the cornerstone to develop the collection, treatment and distribution system. A full enquiry was issued to Keyplan, Veolia, Bateman Africa and IST Technik to construct, commission, operate and maintain a 20 ML/day desalination plant to treat acidic, saline mine waters to a South African National Standard (SANS) 0241 Class 0 potable water. After the technical and financial adjudication, Keyplan were awarded the contract. An integrated regulatory process was adopted through consultation with all the relevant regional and head office staff of the Department of Minerals and Energy, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Mpumalanga Department of Land Affairs via an authorityÆs steering committee. A rock engineering evaluation was done to select both the plant and waste disposal sites as all possible sites are undermined. Various contracts are required with the individual mines for water supply, the Emalahleni Local Municipality for the delivery of potable water and for the disposal of wastes.

The in situ behaviour of claystone floors associated with the Wallarah, Great Northern and Fassifem Seams has been studied using a comprehensive suite of stress and displacement monitors. The instrumentation was supplemented by in situ and laboratory testing of the claystone materials. The instrumentation demonstrated that the presence of claystone floors is associated with floor heave, extra rib spall, and settlement of the pillar into the floor. Horizontal floor extensometers showed that the depth of extrusion of clay was limited to 1-2 in. A pore pressure transducer installed in a claystone floor demonstrated the possible existence of short-term undrained behaviour of the claystone. Long term swelling of destressed claystone was also documented. Settlement of pillars into claystone floors can be analysed using simple elastic theory. The assumption of plane strain is valid for most claystone thickness/pillar width aspect ratios. Floor heave can be analysed using bearing capacity concepts. However, it is considered that heave is the result of local bearing capacity failure in the rib spall zone. The advantage of this model is that the bearing capacity equation can be applied without resort to unrealistically high factors of safety.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and is normally done as a batch process in open kettles.A number of attempts have been made to establish continuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) at Port Pirie have overcome this problem by constructing a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of a novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.INTRODUCTIONLead bullion emerging from the blast furnaces at Port Pirie is at a temperature of about 1100°C and contains, among other impurities, about 1 per cent of copper.The first stage of refining is the removal of this copper by a drossing operation and in the past this was done, batchwise, by allowing the bullion to cool back in 100 ton kettles.At about 700°C, copper dross begins to separate as a crust on the surface of the kettle and this separation was allowed to continue down to about 450°C when the crust was brokenup and skimmed manually using a long handled, balanced, spoon. The dross was then smelted in a reverberatory furnace to produce a saleable copper matte and separate out lead bullion, which was returned to the drossing kettles. Mount Isa Mines Limited has been mining copper ore for 50 years. In recent years, this production has been entirely by open stoping methods with cemented backfill, mostly in the large 1100 orebody.This has been the major ore source for 20 years, with smaller amounts coming from the 400, 500, 650 and 1900 orebodies. At present, the 1100 orebody is the only source, and this situation will continue until the deep 3000 and 3500 orebodies begin producing in late 1992/93. Production rates have increased to almost 6 Mt/yr, and are planned to rise to 7 Mt/yr by 1995/96. In the future, there will be a move towards variations of the open stoping system as production moves to more lensy zones of the southern 1100 orebody and to the deeper 3000 and 3500 orebodies. This paper describes current operations in the 1100 Orebody, with some indications of future directions.

An investigation was made into the mineralogical characteristics of the upper portions of the 650 and 750 copper lodes. The investigation was based on a comprehensive suite of geological specimens representing all types of mineralization encountered during mining until the end of 1954 and the chief aims of the investigation were to determine (a) the minerals present and their textures and associations, (b) the paragenetic sequence of deposition of minerals in the orebodies, (c) significant changes, if any, which could be found in the orebodies with depth, and (d) the nature and mode of occurrence of nickel in the ore. The general structure of the orebodies is outlined and their mineral composition given. 10 textures exhibited by the ore minerals are described and a paragenetic sequence of events in the formation of the copper orebodies is outlined. No decrease in the complexity of the sulphide mineral textures with depth could be seen and no evidence was found to suggest that the tenor of the ore would decrease with depth although some factors which may eventually limit the extent of the orebodies are noted. The mode of occurrence of minor elements in the orebodies is described. Notes on the occurrence of pyrite, aikinite and berthierite in the orebodies is given and the orebodies are considered to be identified with LiIidgren's mesothermal type of sulphide ore deposit in which considerable replacement of older by younger generations of sulphide minerals occurred.INTRODUCTIONA mineragraphic study was made by Stillwell and Edwards (1945) of a suite of specimens submitted by Mount Isa Mines Limited from the Mount Isa Black Star copper orebodies with a view to determining 1. the nature, extent and association of arsenic, antimonyand bismuth minerals, 2. the mode of occurrence of silver and 3. whether galena and sphalerite occurred in minute forms and below the sizes readily observed in hand specimens.

The main mining method employed at Mt Lyell is sub-level open stoping with a typical extraction level interval of 100 m and sub-level intervals of 30 m. Currently, pillar blasts provide the major portion of broken ore and firings are in the order of 200 000 to 300 000 tonnes while future firings of 500 000 to 300 000 tonnes are planned. Improvement of blasting techniques in these mass firings has been necessary for the following reasons. 1. Extremely wet ground conditions have adversely affected ANFO performance and placed extreme pressure on the charging and priming phases. 2. As pillar blasts increase in size the problems of wet ground conditions are accentuated resulting in very slow loading of wet upholes with cartridged gelignite and unreliable charging of the remainder with ANFO. 3 Fragmentation in pillar blasts has suffered because of the above, result- ing in increased secondary breaking costs and difficulty of extraction.

Since the discovery of Pajingo in 1984, the northern Drummond Basin has emerged as a significant new gold province, and has become the focus of intense exploration for epithermal gold mineralisation. Prospects in the Conway area are hosted by felsic to intermediate lavas and volcaniclastic rocks near the base of the Drummond Basin sequence. These Drummond Basin rocks appear to represent favourable hosts to mineralisation because they are cut by structures which could have focussed and channelled fluids on a regional scale, and because they constitute a possible source of gold and, perhaps more significantly, sulphur for the transport of gold. Prospects in the Conway area are up to 15 km2 in area, and are of the adularia-sericite type. They illustrate many of the classic features (siliceous sinters, alteration mineralogy, and fluid characteristics) recognised in epithermal deposits. K-Ar dating of sericite alteration in three of the prospects has produced a range of ages from 283 to 334 Ma, suggesting that the systems are the product of multiple hydrothermal events.

The key functions of project evaluation are to assess potential profitability and to develop an effective operational design. For mining projects, design aspects include mining methodology, ore treatment methodology and production rates. All of these characteristics impact on project economics and overall value. Resource models, which form the ultimate basis of project evaluation, typically consist of tonnes above cut-off, grade above cut-off and the spatial distribution (connectivity) of tonnes/grade above cut-off, for one or more variables. Dilution, ore loss and metallurgical recovery are all modifying factors applied to the resource model during evaluation and determination of profitability. A key issue is: how is the value determined? In addition to traditional combination of in situ tonnes/grade, the following merit serious consideration: the concentration of deleterious elements, throughput rates, mining/processing costs and û importantly û metallurgical recovery. Geometallurgy is an emerging field targeted at integrating these issues by identifying either direct measures or proxies for throughput (hardness, grindability), recovery (liberation, mineral shape/texture, etc) and concentrate quality from easily collected macro-, meso- and microscopic data. These ægeometallurgical variablesÆ drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way. For geometallurgical characterisation to have a real impact on business design, it must enable improved mine planning. When creating spatial estimates for such variables, it is preferable to find proxies that can be measured as close to the intact rock mass as possible. However, spatial estimation of proxies for geometallurgical properties and responses is complex and requires special consideration. Unlike grades, both proxies and absolute measures of geometallurgical variables are not necessarily linear or additive and therefore require very careful geostatistical consideration. In some cases, models must predict extreme values of geometallurgical attributes rather than averages. Incorrect characterisation of metallurgical recovery/throughput can (and has) led to misspecification of the scale of projects, and thus can be seriously value destructive. Aspects of geometallurgy have long been important in iron, bauxite, manganese and coal deposits and are increasingly on the radar for base and precious metal miners. However, as more metallurgically complex deposits are developed and mining of large-scale, low-grade deposits becomes more commonplace, the importance of characterising the metallurgical response in order to generate properly optimised projects will rapidly increase. It is possible that in many ætraditionalÆ (ie grades and tonnes) reserve models, the variables that drive the project are missing!

"In some underground mines it has been observed that the primary focus during feasibility studies is to determine the best way to mine the defined orebody. Some studies have been conducted without sufficient consideration of the ventilation and cooling requirements or the risk from exposure to associated airborne pollutants caused by the mining operations.Following the hierarchy of control to manage risk, numerous problems of the ventilation systems in some underground mines could have been avoided if sufficient consideration was given to the ventilation requirements to manage heat, airborne pollutants and leakage during the feasibility study phase. If the constraints and hazards were well defined and understood at the time of the study, efforts could have been made to eliminate or substitute the hazards to decrease the risk. Some of these problems include but are not limited to: primary fan locations heat loads diesel exhaust ventilation design based on the production requirement fire/emergency response strategies.This paper highlights areas in the ventilation discipline that are sometimes overlooked during feasibility studies. It will also highlight the importance of the Ventilation Specialist during these studies. Experience and knowledge of best ventilation practices must be applied in feasibility studies.As a result of adequate consideration to all ventilation aspects in the feasibility study phase, risks will become lower in terms of health, safety, production loss and equipment downtime caused by heat.CITATION:Kok, J, 2014. Battle Mountain Gold Company's Paj ingo Mine is the first gold mine developed by the Company in Australia. The Mine located in northern Queensland commenced operations in September 1987. The high grade epithermal orebody is selectively mined and processed through a conventional carbon in leach/carbon in pulp (CIL/CIP) plant at a rate of 200000 tonnes per annum. In 1988 it produced 61000 oz gold and 152000 oz silver. Inadequate preoperational development of non technical management and organisational functions often leads to inefficiencies that last well into the operation. The Pajingo experience in this regard is oaTple ented by those from a number of other recently commissioned small operations. A checklist is discussed to assist any future preoperational group in focussing their attention into areas that seem to be of secondary importance at the time but often have a significant impact on overall management efficiency later.

Drainage of gas has been practiced overseas for almost half a century. Peal advances in drainage of gas to combat high emissions became practicable in the late fifties and early sixties when the technology was standardised to use it under a variety of mining and geological conditions. Today methane drainage is practiced in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ibmania, U.S.S.R., China, Japan, Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico. Australia entered the list of countries using gas drainage on 3rd March, 1980 when the first full scale gas drainage system was set up and commissioned at West Cliff Colliery to drain gas from the Bulli Seam. Methods used in Europe are different from those used in North America, Japan and Australia mainly because of the different mining methods and also because of the limited number of seams under extraction, relatively new coal fields, and comparatively larger distance between the seams. In spite of the difference in the technique, the basic aim is the same and that is to improve ventilation and reduce ventilation costs, alleviate dangerous gas accummulation, overcome outburst hazards and ultimately make mining safer and more efficient.
