Vibration analysis for diagnosis of machines is a powerful instrument for condition monitoring. Especially for diagnosis of antifriction bearings various equipment and techniques have been developed and are available. The envelope analysis is the most reliable method for bearing diagnosis. Different bearing failures lead to different patterns of the envelope spectrum. Checking the amplitudes of characteristic bearing frequencies is mostly not sufficient for a reliable diagnosis. Therefore human experts compare the pattern of the spectrum with typical patterns of bearing defects. In this paper a diagnosis system is presented which imitates this action of human experts. Using a neural net the system not only distinguishes typical bearing defects but also detects unbalance, beating of disengaged machine parts and other kinds of machine failures.

The basic parameters causing outbursts are rock pressure, gas characteristics and the physico-mechanical properties of the coal. The three sets of factors are to some degree interdependent. At Collinsville, the gas characteristics coupled with the physico-mechanical properties of the coal appear to be the major factors contributing to outbursts. The relative importance of rock pressure is uncertain. The following geological parameters appear to be necessary before outbursts can occur. 1. A coal rank greater than 1.2% vitrinite reflectance. 2. Thrust faults with throws greater than 3.Om or strike- slip faults with coal gouge wider than 0.3m. 3. Seam gas emission values greater than 1.1 cm3 /g. Igneous intrusions are the likely source of the carbon dioxide seam gas. Outbursts have occurred at depths ranging from 215m to 265m. They occur at these relatively shallow depths due to: 1. the high rank of coal at the present topographic surface and the high coalification gradient; 2. the relatively high degree of tectonic deformation of the strata; 3. the seam gas characteristics; and 4. the extent of igneous intrusions.

Leichhardt Colliery is developed for underground mining of coal seams at depths exceeding 280 m. Investigations of the area were conducted in phases, each designed to delineate seam characteristics more accurately and to indicate with increasing precision the nature of local geological features and the ranges of those coal properties susceptible to variation. The investigational campaign is described phase by phase summarizing evaluation of the area at the conclusion of each phase. Predictions of geological conditions likely to influence engineering planning are contrasted with actual conditions observed during trial mining.

The blast furnace is a counter current reactor. The counter current principle of the furnace makes it very efficient in transferring the heat and mass required to drive the reduction reactions inside the furnace. However, this does impose a stringent requirement on the permeability of burden material in the furnace. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous feeds used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, often accounting for ten to 20 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. As the lump ore descends through the blast furnace, it is dried, heated and reduced by the ascending hot reducing gas. To ensure good furnace permeability, generation of fines from burden materials including lump ore due to mechanical, thermal and chemical processes needs to be minimised. Unlike sinter and pellets, lump ore is subject to thermal degradation. To assess this behaviour of lump, the ISO decrepitation test (ISO 8371, 2007) is often conducted, and the result is calculated as a decrepitation index (DI). However, the DI values obtained from the existing ISO decrepitation test vary considerably between test portions and between laboratories, which makes meaningful comparison very difficult. In order to identify the sources responsible for the unacceptable repeatability, the effect of various testing conditions, such as particle size, heating rate, sample preparation and loading method, on the mean DI value was studied. Tokyo Metropolitan Government designs the stormwater storage plans in underground, as a measure of flood control in completed urban district and improvement of combined sewarage system. This time, introducing those plans, we report about IKEJIRI and SIN-KOMAZAWA STORAGE TRUNK LINEs design and construction. They are located in Meguro river basin of the Morigasaki drainage area. Both storage trunk lines have capacity to store 15O,000m3 of stormwater. They are in use for countermeasure of flood till Meguro river's strengthening (intensity 50 mm/h) is ended. And after the strengthening, they will be in use for improvement of river water quality, through the storage of combined sewage and first runoff, which, otherwise overflows weirs and flows to river in a rainy day. These storage trunk line's full length is about 5700m. Boring diameter 66140 mm (f = 2672m) and 47800 mm (I = 2866m) of these tunnels are constructed by Mechanical Shield tunnelling method. And boring diameter 3600 mm x 4000 mm (R = 180m) is constructed by NATM tunnelling method. We began works in 1983, and have a mind to complete in 1987.

This paper gives a description of the research undertaken by an explosives manufacturer to give better technical advice to the Mineral Industry. Blasting Physics is defined as giving a systematic and coherent account of the initiation and subsequent effects of high explosives upon the surrounding medium. As a result of this work a mathematical model based on the gener- ally accepted mechanism of blasting has been developed. The mechanism and the resulting model are briefly outlined. IFrom'this model the effects of burden, spacing, blasthole diameter, rock and explosive properties upon fragmentation and heave can be calculated. Using these calculations it is then possible to see how variations in frag Imentation and heave can affect the overall production costs of a mine whether it is surface or underground. The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a value sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Statistical methods, based on the monolayer-sensitive time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) technique, have been developed towards this ultimate aim by measuring hydrophobic species (collector ions, dimers and metal complexes, polysulfides) as well as hydrophobic metal ions, precipitates and added depressant species. Reliable identification of specific mineral particles is central to this statistical analysis. A chalcopyrite/pyrite/ sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes to study transfer of Cu from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces, since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery, showed no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite (selected from Fe and Zn images) after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from sets of data. In images, PCA selects these correlations from the mass spectra recorded at each of 256 ¦ 256 pixels in a selected area of particles. In the image mode, PCA has proved to be a much better method of selecting particles by mineral phase with clearer definition of particle boundaries due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The PCA method has been applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrating extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite (Cc) and heazlewoodite (Hz) minerals. Statistical differences illustrate the important discriminating depressant action of NiOH in flotation despite the activation of Hz by Cu transfer. The adsorption of the collector at specifically-identified Cu sites has been elucidated by the study. Importantly, the statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.

Copper entering a lead ,smelter in concentrate or from other sources is recoVered as matte and speiss which contain appreciable quantities of lead. The matte and speiss are usually sold to copper smelters to recover the copper content and also any gold and silver in these products, but the value of the lead is largely lost. Some copper plants pay for portion of the lead content, but regarded as a means of recovering lead it is more costly and less efficient than if the lead were recovered at the lead smelter.Because of the value of this lead loss, the metallurgy of copper recovery has assumed greater importance in recent years owing to the rise on the price of lead.Two processes are in use today to produce matte and speiss, namely the iron matte process and the soda matte process developed by the American Smelting and Refining Co. 1 in D.S.A. The latter process is characterised by a higher copper to lead ratio than the older iron matting process.The following analyses are typical of matte and speiss produced at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, by both processes, although the soda matte process is still in a developmental stage and experience indicates that matte and speiss of lower lead tenor can be produced under favourable conditions.

In mineral asset valuation the use of any valuation method requires the input of competent and independent technical professionals. A resource valuation must be as transparent as possible to allow others to assess the validity of their underlying assumptions. Materiality is a dominant factor in all valuations and a valuer should set out the basis for the subjective decisions made in this regard. Any valuation methodology must comply with the requirements of the law, practice notes and guidelines issued by the various relevant authorities and professional bodies. The valuation methodology chosen to value a mineral asset depends upon the amount of data available on that asset and the reliance that can be placed upon those data. Mineral assets generally fall into one of three broad categories, depending upon their state of development, ie whether they are at the exploration, development or operating stage. Naturally there are transition phases. Hence, there are ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects; Pre-Development Projects and Developing Mines; and Operating Mines. The features of each of these mineral asset status categories are described, mainly in terms of the confidence in the contained identified Resources/ Reserves. The various subjective methodologies available for the valuation of ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects -are specifically reviewed. The pitfalls in adopting a ""recipe"" approach are noted. It is the author's view that the Expected Value Method (based on the probability adjustment of the output of a Discounted Cash Flow/ Net Present Value model) has little application in the valuation of exploration mineral assets, so it is only briefly addressed. The methodologies reviewed are listed below. ò Multiple of Exploration Expenditure Method (expenditure based). ò Joint Venture Terms Method (expenditure based). ò Geoscience Rating Methods (eg Kilburn - area based). ò Comparable Market Value Method (real estate based). ò Rules of Thumb (eg $/Resource or production unit; % of in situ value). Some recent Prospectuses are used to provide examples of their misinterpretation and misapplication.

Characterisation of platinum-group element (PGE) deposits and their process products has many challenges for the process or applied mineralogist. It is now well established that the PGE distribution for such samples is variably divided between submicroscopic concentrations of PGE in sulfides, tellurides and related minerals occurring as discrete platinum-group minerals (PGM), of which there are a large number of species, many with partial replacement between the PGE and between anions. Each PGE deposit type requires a targeted approach but fundamentally, there are two general methodologies in vogue. One way is to make a large number of polished or polished thin sections for detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/optical examination to determine the PGM distribution and their associations and grain sizes. The other is to make concentrates of representative crushed or processed samples, thus having fewer subsamples to examine. Our method of choice is to use hydroseparation (HS) for concentration. HS provides representative concentrates of sizes down to ~10 ¦m, not possible by other techniques. Various microbeam methods have been used for analysis of trace quantities of PGE (EPMA, micro-PIXE, SIMS and LAM-ICPMS). We prefer LAM-ICPMS (laser ablation microprobe û inductively coupled mass spectrometry) because of the relatively large analytical volume sampled, the ability to measure all the PGE, monitor up to 20 elements, together with detection levels in the tens to a few hundreds of ppb. We provide typical results derived in studies of stratiform PGE ores and tailings, and a massive Ni-Cu sulfide ore.

The mIning operations of Bougainville Copper Pty. Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea.C.R.A. Exploration Pty. Limited first established mineralization in the Panguna area in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 900,000,000 long tons of ore assaying 0·48 per cent copper and 0·36 dwt/ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July, 1969 enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons/day. The concentrate will be pnmped as a slurry through a 16 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 MW steam power station, and access roads.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

Gold Tellurides are important sources of gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Cripple Creek, Colorado and Vatukoula, Fiji. Unlike free gold, the tellurides of gold are rather refractory and the usual treatment practice has been to oxidize the tellurides, either chemically or by roasting prior to cyanidation of the liberated free gold. There is a large measure of disagree- ment as to the actual cause of the refractory nature of gold tellurides. In order to investigate the leaching chemistry of gold telluride, a study was undertaken on the thermodynamics and kinetics of its dissolution using electrochemical methods. From this study suitable direct leaching condi- tions are suggested. In acidic chloride solutions gold telluride can be leached using iron(III) as the oxidant. At lower acid concentrations the reaction is controlled by the formation of a passivating film of H2TeO3. In alkaline solutions containing cyanide the rate of gold telluride dissolution increases with increasing pH and strength of oxidant. However, this can result in excessive consumption of cyanide in the presence of stronger oxidants.

During a programme of explosive performance evaluation at Hamersley Iron, Mount Tom Price Mining Operations, the relative performances of a range of heavy ANFO explosives were compared during normal production blasting operations. In addition, a number of heavily instrumented single hole blasting trials were conducted with each product type. The blasts were monitored in terms of blasthole velocity of detonation (VOD), measured using multi-point plasma conductivity probes with up to 16 measurements per blasthole. Up to 16 blastholes were monitored in each production blast. The results of measurements show a marked difference in performance of all heavy ANFO products between single blastholes and full production blasts, indicating a significant degree of interaction between blastholes in production blasting. The interaction is shown to result in a loss of detonation pressure of explosive, and considered to lead to a loss of fragmentation. The degree of interaction is seen to increase with increasing emulsion content in the products, and is more pronounced in some explosive types than others. The paper presents the methods of measurement and analysis, and the results of monitoring, together with implications on blast design and application of heavy ANFO products.

Studies of the minor element content of sphalerite and pyrite have generally been concerned with individual deposits or localised groups of deposits. However, a small number of more regional investigations have been reported (e.g. Davidson, 1962; Groves and Loftus-Hills, 1968; Loftus-Hills and Solomon, 1967; Price, 1972; Bralia et al., 1979) which have used the minor element abundances to evaluate the petrogenesis and geological affinities of diverse ore types and to fingerprint metallogenic provinces (e.g. Ivanov, 1964). While generally held to be valid, some doubts have nevertheless been cast on the reliability of minor element abundances in petrogenetic deliberations (e.g. Mercer, This paper reports on the distribution of he. Cpl and Mn in sphalerite, and Co, Ni and Mn in pyrite, from sulphide mineral occurrences within the "eugeosynclinal" prism comprising the New England Region of north-eastern New South Wales and south- eastern Queensland (Fig. 1). The occurrences examined are representative of two well-defined styles of mineralisation (Stanton et al., 1974) within which clear patterns of ore-rock distribution give rise to specific metal associations (Herbert. 1977).

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

Samples from the Callide Coal Measures, Queensland, Australia, containing the minor maceral, micrinite, have been studied using optical and electron-optical techniques to determine the precise compositional and structural nature of micrinite when in association with vitrinite macerals. Emphasis has been placed on direct spatial correlation of optical and electron-optical data due to the fine grain size (90 per cent of the component) and, as such, should not be considered a maceral.

the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.
