The story of the Penjom gold mine located near Kuala Lipis on the Malay Peninsular demonstrates the valuable role successful exploration companies can play in the development of the gold mining industry. Avocet Mining PLC ('Avocet') began exploration in the area on a limited budget in 1989, securing land tenure around the Penjom alluvial workings in July 1990. The lease granted, known as Block 7, formed part of a land package offered at the time by the Pahang State Government to develop the resources of the area. Until the late-1980s, the Kuala Lipis region, situated approximately 180 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, had restricted accessibility for security reasons precluding serious exploration or mining activity. The situation has changed dramatically in the 1990s, with several foreign explorers active in the Peninsular, targeting old alluvial and underground workings adjacent to the north-south trending Raub-Bentong Suture. Deeper drilling of these prospects has shown there is potential for both small- to medium-scale open pit mining and possibly underground operations, providing companies such as Avocet with an ideal mining investment opportunity.

The manual gravimetric drying moisture determination methods currently employed by most mineral processing plants fail to provide timely and accurate information required for automatic control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, any tool that provides real-time feedback on the process is vital (Edwards, RP 1994). The introduction of an on-line moisture sensor would become a welcome addition to the process control field instrumentation package now applied. A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the tedious manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum. Therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the æwish listÆ of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure, (Konigsmann, 1990). Today, the task of moisture determination is still done by the classical technique of loss in weight utilising uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of seven to nine percent, but controlling the moisture content below eight percent is a difficult task with a manually controlled system. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback of the moisture content results in the moisture varying from five to twelve percent before corrective actions can be made. This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper introduces and describes a unique and promising novel on-line moisture sensor employed for mineral processing de-watering applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimisation of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarise the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content. The commercial model of the equipment is described with the features and benefits to the users summarised.

The advancement of computer applications in the coal industry is focusing interest on the presentation of washability data by mathematical functions.The normal method of presenting washability data is in the form of five curves, usually filled by eye or by cubic spline functions. It has been shown that coal washability can be characterised by two basic relations: the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship and the instantaneous yield vs relative density relationship. In a new approach to the mathematical modelling of the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship, theapplication of the algorithm to a data set from a mine in central Queensland was successful.

The Far Fanning gold deposit is situated 60 kilometres south-west of Townsville (Fig. 1). Previous recorded production is 3756 tonnes returning about 1600 ounces of gold. This has been taken from surface and shallow underground workings- scattered over the strike length of the deposit of 1700 metres. The main production period was from 1895 to 1908.Previous exploration involving extensive trenching and sampling has been: carried out intermittently. since the 1930's, by Gold Mines of Australia (1932), Placer (1974), Anaconda (1975), Marathon (1980-8-1), Aberfoyle (1981-82), and The Northern Queensland Company (NQC) (1983-present).In 1980 Marathon undertook an extensive drilling programme to test the oxidised mineralisation. Over 200 percussion holes and- 7 diamond holes were drilled along traverse lines spaced 29 to 103 metres apart covering a strike length of around 1800 metres.

Mine closure is a legitimate element of the mining cycle and like mine development involves technical planning, permitting, and finally construction. Closure begins with the mine's operational footprint and transforms the site so that it meets the explicit requirements of the owners and regulators. Implicitly, the closure will increasingly need to meet the requirements of other interested parties such as the local community, workforce, and future land users. Golden Cross is the first modern mine closure in New Zealand. It operated for 6 + years as a mid-size gold and silver mine winning ore from both underground and open pit sources, and processing via a carbon in leach circuit including a cyanide recovery stage prior to tailings disposal. The mine is situated in a sensitive high rainfall environment, and is complicated by the existence of a large ancient landslide underlying most of the tailings dam and waste rock embankment. The regulatory process for mine closure in New Zealand is not clearly understood by operators or regulators alike. The Golden Cross mine was permitted under the Mining Act 1971 and closed primarily under the Resource Management Act. This switch of legislation, the parallel reorganisation of many government departments, and change in societal expectations with respect to long term environmental stewardship during the life of the mine resulted in the requirements of closure being significantly different to the expectations at permitting.

Underground measurements, observations and computed simulations, started a long time ago were concerning the study of : - occurence of typical rockburst, - inducing, stretching of main fractures in the roof of caved longwalls. They made obvious a foundamental phenomenon of inducing of strata fractures involving contact be- tween two layers quite different in their elastic characteristics : coalseam and rocklayer.. The start of primary cracks in maximum abutment zone takes place in the rock near the contact surface. It is opening of crevasses induced by traction stress component resulting of difference of rigidity of both materials and no sliding on in- terface. Occurence and stretching of these crevas- ses are a rheological phenomenon so that the rate of advance and stops of the face influence the distance between the crevasses and the stretching of these ones. The characteristics of these cracks in space and time affect mining conditions. So it is for fractures proximity and expan- sion inducing eventual blocks formation in longwall roofs in front of faces, for depth and delay of road- ways ribsides fracturing, inducing some rockbursts. In longwalls roofs, cracks initiated in front of a face can be either quite close or quite distant each from the other one, according to the depth of crushed coal in front of the face, which af- fects also extension of the cracks.

A number of cooperative studies have been carried out as preliminary work for drafting a standard for application of granulated slag sand for concrete, and the following conclusions were reached 1 The ten kinds of granulated slag sands pro- duced in Japan satisfy the national standard for fine aggregate in terms of physical and chemical properties. 2 Mortar and concrete tests conducted with granulated slag sand revealed that, although with slight differences in the extent, gran- ulated slag sands used in these tests were applicable'as fine aggregate for concrete, 3 The pumpability test by a concrete pump carried out on concrete with two kinds of now commercially available granulated slag sand demonstrated that the pump pressure feeding is applicable in the same manner as in the case of ordinary concrete. These tests permitted' preparation of a draft standard for application of granulated slag sand, and the results formed the first step toward utilizing this material as a sub- stitute for natural sand.

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

The Broken River Province, in the northern part of the Tasman Orogen, is divided into the Camel Creek and Graveyard Creek Subprovinces. In the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, and again in the Late Ordovician, the northern part of the Tasman Orogen was probably a convergent margin with calc-alkaline volcanism. These episodes may have been separated by a passive phase in which quartz-rich flysch and tholeiitic volcanic rocks were deposited. Subsequently, in the Silurian, the region underwent extension forming a large turbidite basin which included the Camel Creek Subprovince and the Hodgkinson Province to the north. Melange is pervasive in the Camel Creek Subprovince which was folded twice in the Devonian. The melange may be related to thrusting accompanying D1. No rocks younger than Early Devonian have been recognised whereas, in the Hodgkinson Province, deposition continued until the latest Devonian. The Graveyard Creek Subprovince formed adjacent to the Camel Creek Subprovince, probably as a pull-apart basin on stable crust. The deformation history of the Graveyard Creek Subprovince contrasts markedly with that of both the Hodgkinson Province and Camel Creek Subprovince. In the Graveyard Creek Subprovince, melange is only present in Early Ordovician rocks. No major angular unconformities have been recognised in the overlying marine to non-marine sequence, which ranges from Early Silurian to Early Carboniferous. Several hiatuses and a slight angular unconformity, all within the Devonian, may be related to the major events in the Camel Creek Subprovince. A major deformation in the Graveyard Creek Subprovince in the Early Carboniferous had only slight effects in the Camel Creek Subprovince. Movement on the Clarke River Fault was probably an important influence on sedimentation and deformation in the Broken River Province.

The Vanyukov Process is a high-intensity smelting system that has been proven over the last 20 years for various metallurgical operations including the smelting of copper, nickel, copper-zinc, antimony concentrates, municipal waste treatment and pig-iron production. Extensive pilot plant tests on copper and copper-nickel concentrates have provided information for the design of the commercial furnaces. The thermodynamic analysis, design idea and the data obtained from commercial furnaces have shown that Vanyukov Process would be the best choice to smelt copper-nickel and nickel sulphide concentrates as well as oxide nickel ores.

Over the past 15 years many world-class gold discoveries have been made in the region. Some deposits, such as Lihir and Porgera in P.N.G., have a contained gold resource that places them among the top dozen deposits ever found on a worldwide basis. Can we see any pattern to these discoveries, or are they the result of good luck or chance by geologists and prospectors who struck it rich? Whilst such discoveries were a feature of the gold rushes of the 1850s and the 1900s, the present boom is now scientifically based. This paper develops an argument that long-tent, multi-disciplinary exploration by experienced geoscience teams underlie the successes achieved. Dis- coveries nearly always reflect a combination of skills, drawn from the areas of geology, geochemistry, geophysics and remote sensing, and a team approach. They do not represent the chance finds of a prospector's pick or such as the Norseman discovery where the gold reef was first noted by the prospector when his horse fell over the outcrop. The following deposits provide major examples of exploration successes within the Australian-Pacific region, it is not an exhaustive list and I have noted other significant producers at the end of this paper. For the Australian mines listed and based on our estimates for 1990 gold production, they represent about 20 per cent of the Australian production total.

To clarify the characteristics of non-uniform flow of gas through layered burdens of ore and coke, flow equations of continuity and motion were solved numerically taking account of the geometrical effect of a bed. The results are compared with that predicted by an approximate solution. A mathematical-kinetic model for determining the distributions of process variables over the region from the top to the melting level of blast furnace with the horizontal or the inclined layers of burdens is developed in consideration of the uneven gas flow. By the use of this model, the longitudinal and the radial distributions of process variables in an existing blast furnace in Japan were calculated with the aid of a digital computer. Computed results show that the process variables and the melting level change remarkably over the cross-section of the furnace and that the patterns of these distributions are similar to the results observed by other investigators.

The Broken Hill Exploration Initiative (BHEI) is a collaborative venture between the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO), Mines and Energy South Australia (MESA) and the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (NSWDMR) to provide a new generation of geoscientific information to promote and enhance the exploration for, and discovery of, new deposits in the Broken Hill region. The area under investigation (Figure 1) exceeds 150 000 square kilometres on either side of the NSW-SA border and is centred on the city of Broken Hill. N.T. I I OL n. WA 8A I Maw. A major impediment to the exploration for, and to the understanding of, the genesis of the world-class Broken Hill Pb-Ag-Zn deposit is the structural and metamorphic complexit\ of the region. Important objectives of the BHEI are therefore: I. the definition of the three-dimensional structure of the province, 2. the deformation history, and 3. the stratigraphic and age relationships of the rock units. Early discussions between the BHEI partners and industry scientists revealed that new geophysical surveys would be a key requirement to help advance the understanding of the province, especially a contiguous high resolution airborne geophysical dataset covering both outcrop and areas of shallow surficial cover. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the new high resolution airborne geophysical data and to discuss their interpretation and potential for enhancing the knowledge of the Willyama Supergroup geology.

Economic conditions dictated the lead time from concept to commissioning of the Kambalda C.I.P. Plant. The high gold price prevailing at the time the Victory ore-body was discovered provided the impetus to establish a treatment plant with the utmost haste. Consequently only limited metallurgical testing was possible. Fortunately the Kambalda Metallurgical Department had experienced gold metallurgists among its' staff. This enabled a rapid assessment to be made of the ore types to be treated. Flexibility was the keynote in the plant design. Overseas practice and experience was drawn upon extensively, but it was known that problems uniquE to the Kambalda Plant would be encountered due to the high nickel content of the C.I.P. Plant feed and the difficult clays in some of the areas. These fears were well founded and problems have been experienced. However the plant design has enabled these problems to be absorbed, if not overcome, and design production rates were achieved and maintained within three month; of start-up.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in the subdivision of the three formations (megafacies) previously recognised in the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. Nine dominantly volcaniclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, floodplain lake, alluvial plain, ephemeral lake and alluvial fan depositional environments. The Dotswood Group was deposited during a major regressive phase that began at the end of the Givetian, continued throughout the Frasnian and ended in the early Famennian.The proposed depositional model completes a southeasterly progradation of coastal plain facies over shoreline and nearshore marine facies established in the underlying Fanning River Group. Uplift and associated acid-intermediate volcanism to the south of the Burdekin Basin, resulted in the deposition of a volcanogenic alluvial fan facies locally preserved along the southwestern margin of the basin. Tuffs and ?ignimbrite were deposited in widespread floodplain lakes which lay behind the coastal plain. An alluvial plain traversed by southward flowing rivers, formed the northern margin of the basin.

ABSTRACT' The high gas emissions associated with coal extraction at some-Australian collieries have provided a need to investigate the methods used to predict these gas levels and the vent- ilation requirements for gas dilution. It is generally accepted that the introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex ventilation planning problems. These problems are made much more severe when the colliery introducing longwalls is already facing high gas emissions even during the development stages. A forecast of likely gas emissions during the longwall mining process indicated possible ventilation problems in maintaining the necessary ventilation levels to satisfy the statutory gas limitations for various production rates. Although there are sound principles used in world recognised methods of gas emission prediction a new approach developed from the findings of the Barbara Experimental Mine in Poland appears most suitable for Australian conditions. When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

Blasting performance is directly related to the characteristics and efficiency of the explosives used. The selection of the correct explosive for particular blast conditions and objectives depends on the ability to characterise the performance of individual explosive products. Techniques have been developed by the JKMRC to measure explosive performance and assess the impact of explosive performance on blast results. Studies conducted at a number of mine sites have shown that different types of explosives perform quite differently and that the performance of any particular explosive can vary significantly. The principal causes of these variations have been identified and detailed blast monitoring techniques, including the analysis of muckpile fragmentation and shape, have been used to quantify the effects of explosive performance on blast Results.
