Electromagnetic methods used in geo- physical prospecting for conductive ore bodies have proved successful in Canada,Sweden and other countries. In Australia however the depth of weathering generally exceeds 30 metres. This introduces a problem of highly conductive overburden and renders equipment useful elsewhere virtually ineffective. A discussion of several EM prospecting techniques is presented and a new system under development at James Cook University using V.L.F. transmissions capable of indicating changes in impedance (not only highly conducting media) is outlined.

Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

Over the last few years several important developments have taken place in the Electro- lyte Purification Plant at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. A fully automated system for the continuous removal of arsenic has been develop- ed. A submerged combustion process for the removal of nickel has been developed to a stage where patent coverage has been obtained in most of the copper producing countries. A plant has recently been commissioned for the production of Tetra Cupric Arsenate, which it is hoped will find a ready market in the timber preservation industry.

Shortwall continuous mining as first introduced at Burwood colliery, and currently being used at John Darling, Lambton, and Corrimal collieries, is a method of coal winning which was pioneered in the Newcastle district. The system uses individual hydraulic self-advancing chocks for roof support and the coal winning operation is by continuous miners and shuttle cars. Where physical conditions are suitable the system provides a safe, efficient and economically viable basis for pillar extraction. Shortwall operations have been conducted successfully in the Victoria and Dudley seam, near the coastal fringe of the Newcastle district and are now being tried out in the more difficult conditions of the Bulli seam in the Illawarra district.

Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. Significantgeologicalconditions are defined, from review of the stratigraphic and geomorphic controls on known deposits , for heavy mineral accumulation on the Swan Coastal Plain.

The areas of impact when employing high productivity long wall systems are reviewed and the financial implications of the most significant areas highlighted. A distinction has been made between availability and utilization. The need for more efficient delay recording, together with increasing control and utilization of the systems has been identified and the measurability of the latter discussed. Evans' theory for chisel shaped picks is well known in the field of rock cutting technology. It has been widely accepted as a good mathematical description of how coal and other rocks break under the action of a simple wedge or chisel. Subsequently, Evans proposed a corresponding theory for pointed shaped picks. Theory along with experimental evidence from the laboratory has consistently shown that chisel picks are more efficient than pointed picks. However despite such evidence, pointed picks continue to be the preferred shape in most practical cutting applications. Evans' theory for pointed picks was developed in an attempt to shed light on this apparent incongruity. The theory although predicting forces of the right order was found to be deficient in several respects. This paper examines Evans' theory for pointed picks and proposes changes to it, which brings the theory much more into line with measured data. The issue of the relative efficiencies of chisel and pointed shaped picks is also examined on a theoretical basis and the apparent incongruity is Resolved.

Starting from comprehensive programme systems for monitoring tasks of any kind, this paper follows the steps of the programme system hierarchy from top to bottom. The monitoring and control centres for entire production units, the subordinate centres, i.e. district control centres, the microcomputer based autonomous control systems, and data input by mobile terminals are discussed. To an increasing extent, the main emphasis is shifted from monitoring and control of individual machinery to optimized operation of extremely complex comprehensive systems. Network displays, for instance displays of production, transport, supply- and evacuation-networks as well as of safety systems, gain increasing importance. Personnel deployment systemsand planning networks as well as stocktaking and accounting are more and more closely linked with the above-mentioned networks. In order to keep development and application (purchasing) costs low, and to assure compatibility, the use of standard modules is to be assigned particular importance. New module developments are introduced, and the design of standard interfaces for computer and module coupling are discussed.For conclusion, a short view is given on the opinion of the line manage-ments on how future hierarchic systems should be featured in terms of individual units and overall systems, and used.

This paper descrioes a case history of a coal mine which developed un'tahle roof conditions due to mass sliding of the overburden strata on a claystone band within the coal seam. The sliding is believed to have been initiated by stress relief associated with the removal of overburden alongside the entry portal of the underground workings. Once in motion, the roof block was kept moving by bulking due to roof collapse in the normal underground goafing operations. Control measures in the form of an earth and rockfill buttress against the entry portal and a sequential mining plan to create goaf areas alongside the entry portal have been initiated to attempt to limit movement. The operation has been continually monitored and a gradually decreasing pattern of movement is being re, orded.

With constantly rising energy costs it is ever more important that we look at ways of im- proving comminution efficiency both in terms of power consumed as well as capital costs required for purchasing and installing equipment. I intend to show that commonly used appli- cation criteria, which is presently accepted for designing crushing and screening plants, need drastic revision if it is to be used to accura- tely design, predict and refine performance in new and existing facilities. Unless we can calculate performance accurately, we cannot minimise capital investment and maximize Profitability.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan will total approximately 3.3 billion tonnes. Approximately 15 per cent of waste materials contain zones with varying amounts of sulfides and carbon and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has the potential to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulfide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments. Safe storage of reactive shale is the focus of ongoing research. Since the mid-1990s, a number of trials have been undertaken at Mt Whaleback in order to further the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of reactive shale. This paper summarises some of these trials, and discusses key learnings arising from interpretation of results. Ultimately, the learnings from this research will provide the guidelines for successful storage of reactive shale.

The future of the Tasmanian mineral industry can only be estimated from a knowledge of the past, and armed with this knowledge an orderly plan for the future can be developed. Brief mention is made of the major historical developments through to the present day, with past and future development areas clearly mapped. Areas of importance which have been discussed are divided into the mining of metals, fossil fuels and non-metals; and the process- ing and extractive industries. Discussion then follows on the current general non-insular pressures on the mining industry, the energy crisis, scrap, world shortages, new techniques, inflation, and the effects of exploration on the environment. This is then followed by a discussion of the advantages of Tasmania as a mining state and a cataloguing of the present exploration and some possible areas of future development. From this a suggested plan emerges for the future development of the Tasmanian mineral industry, to incorporate the latest technological advances and by planning to meet the challenge of survival and growth in a turbulent environment.

Kobe is divided by the Rokko Mountains, runn- ing from east to west. The southern section of Kobe is highly developed in contrast with the northern section, but big, new residential pro- jects like the Hokusetsu New Town and Hokushin New Town are steadily being developed. To handle future traffic between the two sections of the city, the double-tracked Hokushin Line, now under construction, will connect the Shin Kobe Station of the Kobe Municipal Transit (Kobe's subway system) to the Tanigami Station of the Kobe Electric Railway. The locations of Kobe city and Hokushin Line are shown in Fig.-1 and Fig.-2 respectively.

Most metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from different feed stocks – sinter, lump ore and pellets. Sinter is the main iron-containing feed to the blast furnace and can constitute up to 70–85 per cent of the total ferrous burden. As sinter quality is a key element for stable blast furnace operation, the textural, chemical and physical characteristics of the sinter are very important. Two major factors that affect sinter strength are mineralogy and porosity. This study utilised optical image analysis (OIA) to characterise sinter mineralogy, and the results were compared to those obtained by manual point counting under the optical microscope.Two major mineral characteristics of iron ore sinter are the presence of primary (unreacted) and secondary (derived from melt) hematite. Standard OIA, which is based on RGB thresholding, is not able to distinguish them as they have the same reflectivity; however, primary and secondary hematite in iron ore sinter have a different morphology. The CSIRO-developed OIA software Mineral4/Recognition4 has a unique feature to identify various textures/morphologies of the same mineral. Together with other capabilities of the Mineral4/Recognition4 software, this feature was used to identify different types of hematite and silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium and other common sinter phases, such as magnetite, larnite, glass and remnant aluminosilicates.A visual comparison of the sinter mineralogy present in optical photomicrographs and that present in the mineral maps created automatically by the Mineral4 module of the CSIRO software confirmed the accuracy of the automated mineral identification.CITATION:Donskoi, E, Hapugoda, S, Lu, L, Poliakov, A, Peterson, M and Haileslassie, A, 2015. In May 1991, AZSA commissioned a new conventional Cell House. This paper focuses on the major improvements introduced in the design and the construction of the equipment, machinery and control. An effective control system together with good reporting and routine operation has resulted in quality control of the Cell House at the highest possible level. Consequently the monthly current efficiency consistently averages above 93 per cent with a total energy usage of 3000 AC kWh/t of cathode zinc. The new concept for the year 2000 and beyond is introduced.

An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.
