Modern plate tectonic reconstruction of Mexico and Central America shows that the southeast-extend ing Precambrian backbone of Mexico, together with the east-flanking accreeted Huastecan (Appalachian-Caledonian) orogenic belt, are geotectonic elements practically absent in Central America, except west-ern and northern Guatemala and Belize, and contrib-uted little to the mineral potential of the entire region.The gradual accretion of the Cordilleran oro-genic belt took place against the western-south-western margin of the Precambrian backbone, and its consolidation required several tectonic events from the medial(?) Paleozoic to the end of the Mesozoic. The striking features of this "long-lived" orogenic belt are the massive sulphide min-eralization in the upper Paleozoic eugeoclinal as-semblage, the widespread gold occurrence in quartz veins in the lower Mesozoic volcanics and related intrusives, the carbonate-hosted silver-bearing lead-zince deposits of the Mississippi Valley-type (or Pine Point-type) around carbonate banks within the Lower Cretaceous back-arc miogeocline, that de-veloped over the Precambrian backbone and deeply-eroded Huastecan orogenic belt, the massive sul-phide (Pb-Zn) deposits in the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sequence, transitional from miogeocline to eugeocline, which carry high grades in silver, and the iron deposits in this transitional facies, which are described in the literature as related to dioritic intrusives of Late Cretaceous age. Central America, south and southeast of the Mota-gua-Polochic fault system, forms part of the in-ternal zones of this orogenic belt.

Yampi Sound is a small channel in the Buccaneer Archapelago (latitude 16° 10' S.; longitude 123° 40' E.), on the northern coast of Western Australia (Fig. 1), about 90 miles north of Derby, and 200 miles north-east of Broome.The iron ore deposits of Yampi Sound occur on an approximately S.E.-N.W. trending belt of islands which form the northern boundary of the Sound (Fig. 2). Particulate chalcopyrite samples (78 ~ 98 mole per cent chalcopyrite, screen size fraction from 710 to 250 µm) were prepared by crushing and sieving lump ore samples from 12 locations in the Mt Isa Mine. Measurements of thennoelectric power (which does not involve the passage of a current) were made using a packed bed that was compressed by loading with a weight and placed in a temperature gradienL Details of the apparatus are described.The effect of particle size was investigated by preparing 12 fractions, with mean particle sizes ranging from 605 to 2.2 µm, from one of the ore samples. Values of thennoelectric power decreased with both increasing particle size and loading pressure; however it remained fairly constant for particle sizes above 80 µm, when loading pressure exceeded 3.3 MPa.Measurements of the chalcopyrite samples gave an average value of -260 JlV/K (-248 ~ -268 µV/K) for nine samples and about -290 µV/K for three samples, showing that these samples were all n-type semi-eonductors.

Resurgence in Au exploration during the past decade has been characterised by a considerable emphasis and dependence on geochemical procedures. This has been made possible, firstly, by marked improvements in analytical sensitivity over those previously available and secondly, of particular importance to exploration in Australia, by a better understanding of the distribution of Au in the regolith, which has led to the optimisation of sample media. These developments have given exploration companies the ability to seek and detect subtle and widespread geochemical signatures of concealed Au mineralisation and provided an enhanced capability to interpret the data. As a consequence, several new discoveries have been made, even in areas that have been intensively explored in the past. In the deeply weathered Yilgarn Craton (WA), and in equivalent areas elsewhere in Australia and overseas, Au has accumulated in the upper lateritic gravels and duricrusts of the regolith, probably during humid climatic periods in the Tertiary. The laterites may not only be Au ores in themselves, but research by CSIRO and CRC LEME has shown them to be very important sample media, (eg Anand and Smith, 1992). In many areas, however, the laterite has been eroded and hence is unavailable as a sample medium and chemical modification under more and conditions since the Tertiary has leached Au from the upper saprolite. This has greatly increased the difficulties of exploration, particularly where reliance was placed on sampling between 2 and 15 m of the surface. Further research, however, has demonstrated that, despite this leaching, recent remobilisation of An has caused it to concentrate in a specific soil component, pedogenic carbonate, usually in the top I - 2 m, thereby giving surface expression even to mineralisation that is concealed by over 20 in of leached overburden. Secondary carbonates, commonly referred to as calcrete, may precipitate as calcite and/or dolomite in regoliths where the average annual rainfall is less than about 600 mm. Pedogenic carbonates are those that form in unsaturated (vadose) soil horizons. They are widely distributed in the Gawler and Yilgarn Cratons. In the Yilgarn Craton south of about 30¦S ('the Menzies Line'), they are seemingly more abundant over more basic rocks and towards the south east (Figure 1). In contrast, groundwater calcretes form in saturated (phreatic) environments, typically in the axes of major drainages north of the Menzies Line. These are known to accumulate economically-significant grades of U but not, apparently, An.

This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.

The safety culture in mining has progressed towards a zero tolerance of injury. This change has required that some historically inherent risks of mining are engineered out or reduced. One of the significant causes of fatality in Western Australia and Worldwide mining is through rock fall, subsidence and inrush. Efforts put into understanding the material properties of the ground we mine and the backfill we place are reflected in improved safety statistics. It is no longer acceptable to not manage these risks and mining, to be sustainable, has to be safe.   Mining historically produced waste products with little consideration of recycling or impact on the surrounding land. The rehabilitation of mining waste products such as mill tailings, heap leach and waste rock is one step towards managing the environmental impact of these waste products. A better step is towards recycling and redepositing these products to produce a more environmentally sustainable mine site.   Gold fields St Ives lease is an active network of new and historic undergrounds and open pits within the Lake Lefroy and Kambalda district. The process of creating voids underground followed by open pits mining through the old voids allows the use of backfilling to control inherent hazards and dilution. Backfill provides opportunity for the disposal and recycling of mining waste materials at the same time as meeting requirements of mine support. Materials available on the St Ives site include spent heap leach, reclaimed tailings and waste mullock. Through recycling and re-depositing these materials to St Ives and neighbouring mines, the reliance on imported material to meet their needs and impact on surrounding land is reduced.   At St Ives, paste fill and barricade design have been reworked to allow backfilling into stopes with water inflows up to six litres per second. This has required a rethink of the drainage and monitoring of water management systems previously used for hydraulic fill and apply them to paste.   The St Ives open pits have developed methods to mine through underground workings and individual stope voids up to 62,000m3. Here backfill is used to reduce the consequence of catastrophic, unexpected failure of the crown and minimise ore lost down voids and dilution through increased blast movement. This paper outlines the less common methods being adopted to use the recycled materials and ways it has been managed to suit the needs of the company.

The Water Board has been involved in the development and ipgrading of sewerage facilities in the Blue Mountains since 1980. In 1984 the Board prepared a report that dealt with the Blue Mountains Sewage Effluent Management study. Successive 3ovemments have been concerned about development in the 3lue Mountains and the effect this development is having on the luality of the streams flowing into the Blue Mountains National ?ark (presently up for World Heritage Listing).

Ventilation characteristics of a three h -nc longwall development panel in a 1/100th tale hydraulic model using dispersion mechanics are the first applications of its Find in ventilation. Dispersion mechanics gives additional and important ventilation parameters such as degree of mixing, bypassing, -ecirculation etc. These are not obtainable the traditional pressure-volume methods. Experimentally, the model work investigates entilation characteristics of different stopping layouts, including leaky stopping,, cut-throughs and return roadway, brattice tyre ventilation and the effects of flow rate reduction on air distribution in the headings. Additionally, a model of methane generation at the face provides results used to calculate the dispersion characteristics in the return airways. It is concluded that the model resui,s -trongly suggest that dispersion mechanics could be applied to mine ventilation surveys to provide quantitative flow pattern data and details of effective dispersion '?_C!,r riro ò `b' eritilat.ing air.

One of the most difficult places to ventil ate in any mine is the working face area of an advancing mine heading. With an ever changing configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necess- ary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to control mixing and recirculation. Methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilat- ion is not adequately monitored. An understanding of the air flow patterns which develop through use of different face ven- tilation systems can be reached by undertaking underground measurements or through observations using physical models. Tests undertaken by the author to determine the adequacy of different system-configurations are discussed together with approaches adopted by others working in the United States. Various new methods have been proposed for improving face ventilation beyond that sustained using conventional brattice curtain or tubing systems. The adequacy of some advances adopted by mining companies to improve ventilation while maintaining output efficiency is discussed.

Distillation of the large and growing greenhouse literature indicates that: ò Global warming has occurred over the past century or more; ò Build-up of CO2 (and lesser greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere is a fact; ò This build-up is likely to cause further global warming. It does not appear possible to conclude that the observed C02 build up and observed global warming are linked; nor is it yet possible to forecast global or regional climate variation with conviction. The dominant greenhouse gas is C02 with about half the warming potential of those gases emitted by man's activities; and about 80% of anthropogenic C02 emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil-fuel C02 emissions arg divided about equally between the developed countries of OECD and the rest of the world. However C02 output growth over the past decade was about 4% for OECD and some 40% elsewhere. Population growth and pressure for better living standards will ensure continued higher growth outside OECD. Uncertainty about the impact of increasing C02 emissions on climate, and the long lead-times involved in limiting the increase in atmospheric C02 concentrations, are good reasons for taking action now. Australia accounts for about 275 million tonnes a year or just over 1% of the CO2 emitted from the world's consumption of fossil fuels, and the fight to control global emissions will be won or lost elsewhere. Australia's participation will be by wise conselt and by example. In view of the uncertainties involved, it appears premature to take actions that might place an additional financial burden on our hard-pressed country. However, much can be done now that makes good economic sense and has the added benefit of limiting the growth in Australia's CO2 emissions. Natural gas emits less C02 per unit of energy when burned than either coal or oil. Furthermore, new gas-fired power stations utilise energy at considerably higher efficiency than is the case today with coal or oil. Because of much lower capital costs, there is a compelling economic case for permitting natural gas to compete freely with coal in the Australian power generation market.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The paper discusses the results of field investigations.

The volcanic successions that host massive sulphide deposits are diverse in composition, facies types and facies relationships. They also show a variety of spatial and temporal relationships to mineralisation. In many examples, such as the Koongie Park Formation in Western Australia, the host succession includes more or less conformable syn-volcanic sills with peperitic contacts. Such sills can be an important source of heat for fluid circulation, influencing patterns of hydrothermal alteration and the location of co-eval and later mineralisation. The impact of syn-volcanic sills on the host succession depends in part on the initial porosity and permeability of the enclosing facies. The special properties of glassy pumice û being highly porous, permeable, and reactive û allow pumice-rich facies to preferentially focus hydrothermal fluid flow. However, the same properties promote early alteration and porosity reduction. Hence, the diagenetic and compaction history of pumiceous facies strongly influences their potential to host massive sulphide mineralisation. In contrast to pumice, dense glass has relatively low porosity, at least initially, and does not compact. Non-vesicular glass is a major component of submarine lavas, syn-volcanic intrusions and some volcaniclastic facies. However, especially in submarine settings, dense glass is commonly intensely perlitically fractured soon after eruption. The fractures greatly increase the porosity and permeability, locally accelerating diagenetic and hydrothermal alteration. In addition to false pyroclastic textures, altered perlite may exhibit false porphyritic textures. Silica- or feldspar-altered perlite kernels surrounded by intensely altered phyllosilicate domains can resemble phenocrysts in a fine grained groundmass.

Understanding how ore interacts with flux particles at elevated temperatures to create molten slag is crucial since it governs the dynamics of a chemical reaction. This study explores the smelting behaviour of pre-reduced Nchwaning manganese ore when combined with lime, with the objective of examining the evolving interaction between pre-reduced ore particles and lime over time. The research sheds light on the interaction between solid and liquid and the phases that emerge during this process. To achieve this, a sessile drop furnace was employed to rapidly heat the materials positioned adjacent to each other on an alumina substrate and to observe the smelting process as it unfolded over time. This method allowed for the direct observation of the melting temperatures and the flux-ore reaction progression rate, and the potential disruptive events that might occur. By comparing the molten interfaces of the fluxed materials at various time intervals, this study provides insights into the relative rate of slag formation from the two materials. The results indicate that the main slag formation initiated at approximately 1400°C and continued to advance with time, with complete mixing occurring around 1500°C. The possible phases formed were identified using Scanning Electron Microscopy and modelled using Fact Sage thermodynamic software. In addition, the iron particles in the pre-reduced Mn ore were separated and settled from a rich MnO-containing slag. It was found that the separation of molten iron droplets from the slag depends on the rate of solid MnO particles dissolution into the adjacent slag phase.

Continuous development of complex new steel grades to meet the ever-increasing demand of high performance causes recurrent issues in steel continuous casting such as surface quality defects (eg cracks, depressions, deep oscillation marks) and productivity challenges (eg faster casting, near-net shape casting). Continuous casting of steel is a highly successful metallurgical process. Much of this success can be attributed to the performance of the casting powder that is added to the top of the mould, creates a liquid slag pool as it is heated, and forms a slag film between the watercooled copper mould and steel shell during its passage down the mould. Mould powder selection is a compromise between the conflicting requirements of heat transfer and lubrication. In an EU RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel)-funded project, various techniques are developed to offer the opportunity to adapt the slag film to meet the conflicting needs in different parts of the mould such that mild cooling can be generated in the meniscus, mid-broad face or corner areas whilst maintaining lubrication and offering higher cooling rates in other areas of mould. This has significant potential to address the industrial issues in product quality and productivity of continuous casting. This paper reports, as part of the EU RFCS project, the determination of crystallinity and porosity in slag films for casting challenging and innovative steel grades using new methods. In comparison with the methods such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopy / scanning electron microscopy (OM/SEM) analysis that are currently adopted by the industries, EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) has been employed to determine the crystallinity of the slag films taken from industry casters. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) plus 3D image reconstruction has been used to determine the slag film % porosity with pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore location, which can be linked with the performance of the slag films during casting different steel grades.

Decreasing the gas content in the worked seam by degassing before the start of winning has proven its worth in some areas of German hard coal mines. On the one hand, it removes the risk of gas/coal outbursts and on the other hand it reduces the gas inflow into the longwall. The underground experiences of the last 30 years have led to a æhit listÆ of coal seams with respect to their suitability to predegassing. Trials in the DMT laboratory and also results gained in the deposit show that the suitability of a seam for predegassing depends on its rank. In seams with volatile matter of 20 - 30 per cent, high efficiency ratings are achieved as a rule, with lower ratings both in seams with lower and with higher content of volatile matter.If the rock pressure is unusually high, the efficiency rating of the predegassing is lower, even in seams which would normally be suitable for this process. Under unfavourable conditions, for example below or above residual pillars, in-seam boreholes cannot be drilled successfully and the method is not practical. But if the worked seam was already stress relieved, the predegassing has an optimal efficiency. Latest investigations show that the distance between the in-seam boreholes can be extended. But in that case, the time necessary to reach the same reduction of the gas content increases considerably.

Throughout Australia and the world, there have been in recent years a number of incidents involving the reaction of ammonium nitrate based explosives with ground containing certain types of sulphides. This paper presents a comprehensive strategy designed to identify, assess and mitigate the risks involved with blasting in areas of reactive ground. Undertaking blasting in reactive or potentially reactive ground involves a degree of risk, the level of which is dependent upon the controls in place for specific sites; this in turn depends upon the degree of sound reasoning and judgement behind the implementation of these controls. Implementation of controls to minimise the risk of incidents also involves a measurable increase in production and blasting costs. To achieve a balanced solution to this matter, decision-makers need to understand how the risks eventuate, how they should be evaluated, and how control measures reduce the risk. Also required is an understanding of how the problem affects the economics of the operation, and the magnitude of this effect. It is the aim of this paper to provide a structured approach to gaining this knowledge, so that mine management, the workforce and explosive suppliers may jointly develop more effective economic and safe blasting systems for potentially reactive ground. Using a combination of fault/event tree risk assessment and semi-quantitative analysis, a structured approach to dealing with the issue will be illustrated.

Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014. Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options.
