The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.

This work describes a novel mapping technique that allows the direct overlay of calculated local phase equilibria on micrographs of the physical system. The technique demonstrated integrates FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd. and GTT-Technologies) phase equilibria calculations with mapped compositions determined by Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to visually express calculated properties while preserving the spatial information of the sample. The developed methodology is used to analyse interrupted blast furnace softening and melting tests containing mixed burdens of lump and sinter. Tests are interrupted at 1300C and cooled to room temperature for analysis. Phases present at room temperature are analysed to infer the liquid fraction and phases present at high temperature. Analysis of the interface regions between the dissimilar burdens allows insights to be gained into the interaction mechanism. During the transition from solid to liquid, migration and interaction of liquid oxide across the interfaces of the dissimilar burdens has been observed and demonstrated to impact softening and melting performance. Specifically, interaction of the oxides generated by lump (primarily FeO, SiO2 and Al2O3) and sinter (primarily FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO) are analysed, and the occurrence of a range of new mineral phases such as merwinite, melilite, olivine and bredigite observed.

In 2010 Agnew Gold Mine (AGM) struggled to produce the required tonnages from its stopes. The longhole rises used to create void in stopes were unreliable and often failed to gain the designed rise height. The number of firings per stope was having an adverse impact on the ground conditions at the stope brows, impeding stope productivity.Through practical experimentation with longhole drill rigs, box hole rigs and development drill rigs as well as trialling new methods in conjunction with reviewing drill hole data, drill hole accuracy was observed to be an issue on-site. Innovative dragging methods such as the reverse drag, combined with a slope instead of a vertical face on the rear of stopes, have improved dragging and a reduction of firings per stope, enabling larger production blasts.The methods trialled and subsequently implemented at AGM have facilitated the mine achieving budgeted targets for six consecutive quarters. Paste fill has been used successfully at Henty Gold Mine for the past five years. It has allowed 100 per cent extraction of the orebody, stabilised poor ground and enabled wide sections and offsets to be mined safely. However, there are a number of inefficiencies in the current paste fill system. These include the low output from the drum filter, the addition of aggregate to the paste to compensate and the trucking of paste from the plant to the portal. These inefficiencies have increased the operating cost of the paste fill system and caused a number of operational challenges such as blockages and increased pipe wear. These challenges have been partly overcome by taking ownership of the paste fill process, improved quality control and better communication. Henty is currently developing two new orebodies, the Mt Julia and the Darwin and has an opportunity to build an efficient paste fill operation. This is likely to be a high density paste system without aggregate, either located above the new orebodies or located at the plant and pumped to the new site.

Open pit mining at Bingham Canyon commenced in 1904 and about two billion tonnes of ore have been extracted since then. There remain just under one billion tonnes of ore in the pit and this will be mined by 2015. Because the porphyry system extends below the ultimate pit limits, Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation initiated a study in 1997 to determine the viability of underground mining. The study was initiated at that time because the results were to be used to compare the economics of a further pit expansion to that of an underground mine. If a pit expansion was viable then overburden removal would have to start in the near future. This paper is a summary of the work that was carried out for the underground study. Block cave mining was determined to be the most appropriate method to mine the deposit. Two block cave areas have been planned with a total production rate of 72 500 tpd. Additional sources of ore will come from skarn orebodies that are associated with the porphyry deposit. The geology of the deposits is described together with the geotechnical techniques that were used to characterise the rock in the absence of more detailed data that are normally available. A general description of the mine plan is given along with the reasons for selecting the particular methodology used. The study was completed at the end of 1998 and demonstrated the viability of underground mining at Bingham Canyon. Funds have been approved for further drilling and technical studies, which will lead up to a feasibility study in 2004/5.

Magnetite ore blending has yielded signifi cant performance improvements in OneSteel’s magnetite concentrator. The magnetite concentrator beneficiates magnetite ore from the Iron Magnet Deposit and produces concentrate, which is pelletised, then fed to the OneSteel Whyalla blast furnace. Concentrator feed variability severely detracts from the concentrator’s performance, affecting both concentrate yield and grade, which impacts on all downstream processing costs.A coordinated approach has integrated mine planning, geological modelling and grade control, to minimise concentrator feed variability, through effective ore blending throughout the mining and stockpiling process.Mine planning personnel design shots that extend the full width of the orebody and hence across the stratigraphic profi le. Based on geological information contained in block-outs and in consultation with Geology, the Grade Control team allocates material to each primary stockpile, potentially from every stratigraphic domane in the orebody. This ensures primary stockpiles are designed with maximum practical homogeneity and consistency.Using only primary movement, the allocated ore is stockpiled in a layer-cake fashion. The ore is pimple dumped across the width of the stockpile footprint and on completion of a layer, it is dozed flat with an access ramp that allows dumping to commence on the next lift. The primary stockpiles are reclaimed normal to build direction and the magnetite is crushed, all in, to a concentrator feed stockpile.The ore is sampled at the crusher from a falling stream cut. These assay data, are used for benchmarking and control charting the grade and variability of concentrator feed stockpiles. The concentrator feed stockpiles have demonstrated a statistically signifi cant reduction of within pile variation, between pile variation and pile to pile variation, primarily attributable to the development of ore blending. The concentrator has seen sustained, improved performance as a direct result, which translates into lower concentrate cost per tonne and improved yield and quality.

Today, FORACO operates over 300 drill rigs in more than 20 countries.The Asia Pacific region of FORACO runs a fleet of 37 late model drilling rigs servicing the diamond drilling, reverse circulation, coal, coal seam gas and hydro drilling sectors.FORACO Australia has extensive experience delivering large diameter coring (LDC) samples to the resource community. In the past three years, the company has been involved in six 8? coring projects in a variety of geographies and geologies, including iron ore, coal and uranium. FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. There are many small to medium carbonate hosted complex zinc containing deposits where the zinc is not economically recoverable either as concentrate or metal. High grade (>20% Zn) run of mine ore can be processed but even this material gives relatively poor returns. Considerable effort has gone into developing new technology for either upgrading the ore and/or recovering zinc metal hydrometallurgically but there has been limited success. Minetometal has developed a process capable of economically treating these deposits to give marketable lead and zinc products. This paper reviews alternative processes for these ores and gives a detailed description of the Minetometal Process. CITATION: Shaw, R, 2018. Leaders have invested heavily in traditional safety management to improve safety performance over the years. This primarily involved: • fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard) • improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc) • making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). These approaches have helped improve safety performance significantly during the last 50 years and will continue to play a role in the future. Although these approaches may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

The formation of magmatic oxide ore deposits hosted in chemically-evolved layered gabbroic intrusions is attributed to a variety of petrological processes, but there is little to no consensus on the general applicability of each model. Complicating the matter further is that many layered gabbroic intrusions are spatially and temporally associated with alkaline A-type granites, suggesting that there is a petrogenetic relationship between the two types of chemically different rocks. Our experimental results show that petrological modelling using a starting composition of high-Ti basalt from the Emeishan large igneous province can produce evolved silicic liquids that resemble the compositions of microgranular enclaves from the syenitic unit of the bimodal, oxide ore-bearing Baima igneous complex. The experimental results confirm that bimodal gabbro-granitoid complexes can form from a common parental magma and that early crystallisation of Ti-rich magnetite can explain the formation of the oxide ore deposits in the lower parts of the layered gabbroic intrusions. We conclude that crystallisation of a typical high-Ti basaltic parental magma can produce world-class giant magmatic oxide ore deposits and that the occurrence of some alkaline granites may be an indicator of their presence.CITATION:Shellnutt, J G, Hsia, T W-Y, Liu, T-C and Iizuka, Y, 2015. Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. "The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. The paper details the reasoning behind the change and the benefits obtained at Caijiaying by moving from ‘wet’ tailings storage to ‘dry’ tailings storage.Citation:Waldram, J T and Jia, R, 2016. The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. Strain-based failure criteria have several advantages over stress-based failure criteria: they can account for elastic and inelastic strains; they utilise direct, observable effects instead of inferred effects (strain gauges versus stress estimates) and they model complete stress-strain curves, including prepeak, non-linear elasticity and post-peak strain weakening. In this study, a strain-based failure criterion derived from thermodynamic first principles utilising the concepts of continuum damage mechanics is presented. Furthermore, implementation of this failure criterion into a finite element simulation is demonstrated and applied to the stability of underground mining coal pillars.In numerical studies, pillar strength is usually expressed in terms of critical stresses or stress-based failure criteria where scaling with pillar width and height is common. Previous publications have employed the finite element method for pillar stability analysis using stress-based failure criterion, such as Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown, or stress-based scalar damage models.A novel constitutive material model, which takes into consideration anisotropy as well as elastic strain and damage as state variables, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The damage threshold and its evolution are strain-controlled, and coupling of the state variables is achieved through the damage-induced degradation of the elasticity tensor. This material model is implemented into the finite element software Abaqus and can be applied to 3D problems.Initial results show that this new material model is capable of describing the non-linear behaviour of geomaterials commonly observed before peak strength is reached as well as post-peak strain softening. "This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. While coal seam gas is considered to be an unconventional gas, the proliferation of areas under exploration and development mean that it is rapidly becoming main stream. The potential of New Zealand's coals to produce coal seam gas has been recognised for some time. However, key market drivers have not been suitable for the progression of this potential into reality. Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, recognising the potential for the gas in New Zealand have initiated what is the largest ever assessment of New Zealand's coal seam gas potential. The premature demise of the giant Maui field has raised the focus of new gas developments and has increased interest in what we are doing. Over the past couple of years Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd have approached the assessment of the coal seam gas potential in a staged programme. Preliminary assessment of the data on the permit areas indicates that the potential resource may be up to 500 PJ. To date, preliminary appraisals have been completed or are underway on a significant number of fields. Exploratory drilling has been completed or initiated on several of those fields, with results from this work being fed into the preliminary modelling as it has become available. Given that in many of these areas there is no pre-existing information concerning their gas potential and world wide experience with lignite is practically nonexistent, it has been a steep learning curve with many surprises. However, initial gas content results and preliminary gas flow models have been on the whole, rather pleasing, with the commerciality of some developments already apparent.

The Emmaville district is located in the northern part of the New England region of New South Wales some 400 miles north of Sypney. Better known for its substantial production of tin and tungsten ores, the Emmaville district has also been the centre of a small and somewhat sporadic production of copper, arsenic, silver, lead and zinc. This production has come principally from three mines-Webb's Silver Mine, Webb's Consols and, to a lesser extent, Pye's Creek Silver Mine.The ores from these mixed sulphide deposits are texturally and mineralogically complex and the problems of beneficiation are rather formidable.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe main rock type of the Emmanville district is a dark, brown to blackish massive siltstone of Permian age which overlies acid volcanics possibly also of Permian age. In places the siltstone gives way to conglomerates and standstones with discontinuous lenses of calcareous sediments (David, 1887).The whole series is folded but because of the massive character of the more expansive siltstone, detailed structure is difficult to delineate.Toward the close of Permian time the area was intruded by a series of intermediate to acid plutonic and hypabyssal rocks. Mineralization within the region is ascribed to the more acid of these intrusives-granodiorite, granite, and quartz-felspar porphyry (Lawrence, 1957, 1960).No intrusive rocks outcrop in the immediate neighbourhood of Webb's Silver Mine though granite occurs two miles...

Imaging sensor systems designed for the mining and minerals industry incorporate different physical measurement technologies that can be used to detect the machine environment, such as laser, ultrasonic/sonar, video and RF-sensors. The underlying physical measurement principles cannot be employed in most applications near the face without regular maintenance due to the harsh environmental conditions like dust, dirt or moisture. However, that is the area, where imaging sensors are most valuable to the machine operator. In the domain of 2D radar sensors these have been either restricted by the angular coverage area or by limited adaptability of signal processing algorithms. The unique full digital solid state design will establish a generation step in mining applications.In order to fill this gap of terrain imaging sensors, the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery (IMR) of the RWTH Aachen University, in cooperation with the radar company indurad, developed an imaging sensor based on radar technology employing the digital beam forming (DBF) concept. Through multiple transmitting and receiving antennas the sensor delivers high accuracy range and angular information. Using adaptive digital signal processing with multiple imaging algorithms and target detection routines, data of the surrounding environment can be used to enable automation functions in mining.A comprehensive range of radar scans in different environments have been evaluated and benchmarked by using laser scanners. Accuracy measurements in range and angular direction have shown minimal differences. Experimental measurements have been performed at slopes, on conveyor belts and hot cement clinker silos. This paper presents a rationale for selecting appropriate support elements which combine to form a support system to maintain stability in mines subjected to both strainburst and the shaking that occurs from fault slip. The overall approach was developed during the 'case for safety' study undertaken to allow the then Beaconsfield Gold mine (now Tasmania mine) to resume development and production after the 25 April 2006 ground-fall and fatality that received worldwide publicity. Issues of the sometimes competing requirements of support element performance during dynamic loading are discussed and the need for support flexibility is contrasted with the usual high support element stiffness required when these are used to reinforce rock masses. An example is presented to show the steps and technical details required to design each component of a support system to counter the de-stabilising effects of seismicity.
