This paper details the implementation of a new type of grade control system at the Black Star open cut mine in Mount Isa, Queensland. It explores the site requirements for grade control, what as previously in place and what the site required moving forward. It also details some of the features of the system installed and why it was chosen over other grade control systems available. Black Star open cut mine has been in operation since late 2004, and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Ag-Pb-Zn mineralisation previously mined in the Isa Lead Mine. Black Star is currently mining seven distinct orebodies in and around active void hazard zones and hence, its grade control requirements are very detailed and complex. The implementation of a new system to manage the model update and block out processes was, therefore, of critical importance to the site and required a detailed understanding of the requirements of the entire mining team from drilling through to geology, survey and production. Having previously run the grade control process using site specific æblack boxÆ scripts and macros, Black Star needed to implement a more open, auditable and flexible system, which allowed the geologists to control the process and make strategic changes as the situation demanded. MineSightÆs Axis Grade Control, with its flexible, generic framework for managing the process, met these demands. The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel. This provides quality assurance through all stages of the construction phases, as well as the final constructed wall, ensuring compliance to design. Combining Intelligent Machine Control with higher frequency quality assurance provides an increased level of certainty that the TSF construction is defect free and within quality specifications. These recent technological advancements in Construction and Quality Assurance ensure cell raises are constructed to the design intent with greater levels of accuracy and precision than ever before.

High specification Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) has been successfully applied to conveyed flows at iron ore operations since 2002 to representatively measure ore quality for improved quality management and process control. While the PGNAA technique has changed little since that time, significant improvements have been made in measurement capability. Elements previously unable to be measured well or at all using this technique are now measurable and one of these is phosphorus. Aluminium and magnesium are also key elements in addition to calcium and silicon in determining sinter basicity in ironmaking. Other elements measured routinely in iron ores include iron, carbon, potassium, sulfur and manganese. The benefits of representative measurement cannot be overstated as iron ore mining operations in South Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas have discovered. The technology is applicable to any conveyed flow where elemental analysis in real time assists with quality management, from raw materials in ironmaking through to scrap steel in steelmaking and coal quality for coke-making. Major benefits are realised when raw material processing is optimised and this often includes diversion of material meeting a required quality so it can bypass unnecessary processing. This includes waste rock which can be diverted from a plant feed stream in 30 sec increments or ore that meets product quality being diverted to bypass beneficiation. Analysers are successfully utilised to identify ore types that assist with upgrade optimisation in jig plants; measuring feed, product and discard flows to also account for metal content. Product flows to stockpiles help manage production flows and stockpile qualities for different products and assist in blending ores into trains or ships to confirm specification compliance. Technologies can be used in magnetite processing but are predominantly used in hematite and goethite ore processing operations. The paper details examples of the above applications at various operational sites providing estimates of economic benefit as well as operational improvements.

The increasing demand for batteries is resulting in the development of large-scale projects for the production of key battery metals such as nickel and vanadium. Several of these projects plan to extract the battery metals from the ore via chemical roasting, leaving large volumes of waste iron oxides after fuming and/or leaching of the battery metals. These iron oxide wastes can be smelted in a HIsmelt furnace using biochar as the reductant, to produce clean, green pig iron with net zero carbon emissions. This green pig iron can then be added to basic oxygen or electric arc steelmaking furnaces to produce green, net zero carbon, steel. This paper describes the flow sheets and the economics for potential projects producing green pig iron via HIsmelt using waste iron oxides from nickel and vanadium production plants.

Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.

The cost of water treatment is now more than ever a major consideration for maintaining an environmentally and economically sustainable mining operation. As an industry, we often have to consider water sources that are highly impure and difficult to treat. We are also discovering the value of our waste waters in this regard and using new and improved methods and technology to reclaim and reuse water. In many instances, the water or waste water to be treated is highly acidic and saturated in sparingly soluble salts. Conventional systems used to liberate this type of water typically involve high doses of lime with large volumes of waste sludge produced, and are comparatively complex to operate, to pretreat the water in order to reduce scaling tendency on the reverse osmosis stage. However, if the water is considered valuable for reuse, then why not avoid difficult and cumbersome pretreatment processes and treat the water at low pH to keep the sparingly soluble salts, metals and other dissolved species in solution. This paper describes a patented technology that uses and successfully proves this concept as a cost effective option for certain situations. Results from a treatability study on an Australian groundwater are discussed, along with an economic comparison to a conventional method and discussion on full-scale potential.

A detailed, mine scale non-linear numerical model of Rosebery mine has been built for the purpose of simulating life-of-mine global deformations. The model was calibrated using observations of displacement and damage, and was then used to investigate the correlation between dissipated plastic energy (DPE) and seismic event occurrence. The study is unique because the seismic data was collected over a relatively short period using a temporary portable seismic system. It is the intent to undertake significantly more work, but the analysis of limited data shows that a very good, non-linear relation between DPE and event probability is present. The observed correlation is consistent with measurements from other mines where more data was available. With more data, the strength of the correlation will allow the DPE analysis to be used during the design and sequencing phase of planning to better design the mine to minimise seismic hazards.

Understanding and quantifying residual risk is the key to the successful closure and rehabilitation of mines. An important aspect of residual risk is predicting the long-term chemistry of mine water and the long-term geochemical stability of mining wastes. This requires updating the characterisation data for mine wastes and monitoring mine drainage throughout the life-of-mine. The intrinsic properties of waste materials (ie the geology, mineralogy and the weathering processes, which in turn depend on the local climate and water balance in a waste storage facility) are the fundamental controlling factors of residual risk. In this paper, case studies of coal and metalliferous mines are used to discuss the definition of residual risk for a range of waste storage facilities and to highlight the benefits and limitations of current geochemical methods in predicting and quantifying residual risk. Gekko Systems has developed an underground pre-concentration plant (Python) to reduce mine operating costs. Many ores liberate favourably using either high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical shaft impactors (VSI). Using these comminution circuits for mineral liberation; rather than for the final recovery process and by utilising a high mass pull, high recovery process route (gravity/flotation), a narrow, low head, compact processing plant was developed that can sensibly be operated underground. The Python underground processing plant can provide a number of advantages for narrow vein mines including lower haulage costs, improved mine call factor and lower operating costs. The focus on fine crushing reduces the power requirement of the plant to approximately 8 kWh/tonne. The Python underground processing plant has been designed to be towed down the decline or lowered down a shaft, and is capable of being installed in sloping, non-linear drives for placement close to the working face. The overall benefit to mining companies of this concept has been estimated to be a saving in mining costs and a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016. In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

This paper outlines a comparison of heavy liquid and heavy suspension separation methods for iron ore characterisation.As part of Arrium MiningÆs program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in its two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed for the upgrading process has become a major focus.Iron ore deposits almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively dense) iron mineral. Iron ores are found with a range of iron contents, giving rise to density variations.At present the industry relies on heavy liquid separation techniques for the evaluation of iron ore samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. There are only a few high-density liquids available, which are both high-cost and highly toxic.Low-toxicity solutions that can be utilised at relative densities up to 3.0 have been developed. However, highly-toxic organic liquids are required presently to achieve relative densities beyond 3.0.Bromoform which has a specific gravity (SG) of 2.89, and diiodomethane (SG 3.31) are commonly used; both present significant health and safety hazards.æClericiÆs solutionÆ (mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate) provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is currently conducted by a limited number of laboratories worldwide.An alternative to ClericiÆs solution and organic liquids is a low-toxicity, high-SG, suspension technique, which has been demonstrated successfully for heavy mineral sands. This heavy suspension method employs mixtures of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions.Heavy liquid separation is not commonly used as part of routine iron ore feed characterisation due to the expensive, toxic and time consuming nature of the technique. Our results show that the heavy suspensions method can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and are outlined and results compared with results using ClericiÆs solution presented.Heavy suspension technique provides a theoretical/absolute separation of a particular sample. By placing an iron ore sample in a suspension of a particular density, it produces two products: a sink fraction and a float fraction. As iron oxides-hydroxyoxides are denser than the gangue minerals associated with the ore, particles that have high iron content will sink and the particles with gangue association will float. This process is repeated over several densities, thus also enabling separation of the constituent iron ore phases. A theoretical grade and a theoretical mass recovery can be calculated. With these calculations, a grade-mass recovery curve can be constructed for any element that is of interest.This type of characterisation can be used to either prepare OBP feed-piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved on a continuous basis.CITATION:Begelhole, J, Jasper, J and Koroznikova, L, 2013. An Australian Working Group has been compiling a guide for operators to use in order to improve the efficacy of their routine and non-routine sampling tasks within their coal preparation process. The guide focuses on unit operations within the process, and not conveyor belts or transfer stations that are adequately covered by the existing Standard ISO 13909.Representative sampling of unit operations is generally an after-thought following plant construction, whether that be a result of oversight, or more commonly, capital cost minimisation during initial construction. Minimising capital cost by avoiding adequate sampling systems is generally a poor decision, since the result is a process that cannot be adequately measured, meaning that it cannot be adequately managed and optimised.The use of the term ‘guide’ rather than ‘standard’ is intentional. Practical means of sampling unit operations within existing plants generally relies on a compromise between sample representativity (minimisation of bias) and sampling feasibility. The guide does not endorse poor sampling practice, but instead offers practical guidance to overcome, to the extent reasonably possible, real-life limitations.When it comes to sampling any particular process, it is almost always necessary to make a professional judgement as to whether or not the proposed samples are likely to be sufficiently representative such that the sampling will be worthwhile. Such judgement needs to be exercised by personnel who understand the principles of sampling, as they apply to the stream being sampled. Permanent rock bolts used to support rock tunnels are required to perform for the design life of the structure as a minimum. Quality of installation is critical to the performance over the life of the rock bolt.This paper will present the findings from an in investigation into the integrity of rock bolts installed in an underground hydroelectric power station cavern and access tunnel. The 25?mm diameter rock bolts were installed 50 years ago, tensioned and post cement grouted. Due to a major machine upgrade the whole facility was subject to an asset survey. The owners are responsible for managing the risks associated with the failure of these rock bolts and ensuring the structural integrity of the tunnels and caverns is maintained to continue operations, protect machinery, assure production and more importantly maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.To help manage risk a proactive approach is desired. To this end a test schedule using a non-destructive testing (NDT) system was carried out by Independent Integrity Testing Pty Ltd (i2t). The system used in this application was RokTel™. The system operates by applying a small axial impact to the rock bolt end and measuring the resultant acceleration response. The rock bolt characteristics affect the acceleration response.The data output from the system is analysed principally using Fourier Analysis (FFT) and sinusoidal waves. The energy generated in the bar, the rate of damping and changes in frequency are all assessed. Testing was carried out on 70 rock bolts within the tunnel and cavern. A selection were then over cored, photographed and documented. The data gathered from the testing is then correlated with physical evidence to establish a calibration for the remainder of the rock bolts and assess if this is a viable method for identifying defective elements, and what degree of accuracy can be achieved. Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). Within 22 months of commencing decline development, the Prominent Hill Ankata Underground Project achieved its full production rate of 1.2 Mt/a.In 2010 construction of the Ankata Underground Project was approved. Decline development commenced in November 2010 and the turnout for the first sublevel was reached by August 2011. The first stoping ore was produced in the first quarter of 2012 and production was successfully ramped up to full production during the third quarter of 2012.Diamond drilling commenced in October 2011 and was conducted concurrently with the underground development. This presented challenges as mining and production targets had to be balanced with underground exploration activities. To achieve production on schedule, without adversely affecting the diamond drilling program and future development, meticulous and adaptive planning techniques were required. This included involvement from engineers, geologists, underground operators and underground diamond drillers.The granularity of these planning techniques allowed the management and prioritisation of development and diamond drilling down to an almost hourly basis. A constant flow of information from drill assay results was fed back into the planning systems. This resulted in a constantly evolving mine plan as the orebody was further refined. Contour banks and waterways are standard soil conservation measures to assist farmers reduce the impact of gully erosion on sloping cropping land by reducing the slope length to the interval between the banks. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) developed by the USA Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1930s predicts the long-term average annual soil loss (A).The equation is the product of the rainfall erosivity factor (R), the soil erodibility factor (K), the topographic factors of slope length and angle (L and S) and the cropping management factors (C and P). Contour banks reduce the slope length (L) only.Contour banks are a constructed earth embankment, incorporating a channel on the upslope side, typically traversing a slope on or close to the contour to control and/or prevent the erosion of that slope. The banks are also referred to as graded banks, terraces, or bunds (DSITI 2015). Contour banks are either broad based or narrow based. Broad based banks allow the passage of the machinery over the banks whilst narrow based bank batters are too steep preventing the passage of machinery. "Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach, which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. In the non-codified realm of tunnel design there are issues which are sure-fire instigators of controversy. This paper presents a discussion regarding one particular issue which in the authors’ experience often results in comment and debate. This issue only forms part of the rock load assessment process, but it is specifically addressed with the intention of presenting a rational basis for design, which may result in broader acceptance within the tunnel design community.The issue considered relates to the characterisation of in situ rock stresses for the design of tunnel support in the Sydney Basin. A summary is given of the literature on the topic, with emphasis on the main sources of uncertainty and contention. A design approach is proposed, with particular focus given to the numerical modelling of in situ ground stresses and the approach used to ensure that the adopted stress regime is consistent with the assumed ground model.
