Flyrock produced by blasts in surface mining and quarrying is a major hazard that can result in serious injuries or property damage. This paper presents a fully integrated and automated approach for reviewing blast outcomes from a wide variety of rock blasting environments from the perspective of flyrock safety associated with blasthole collar ejections. The process is applied at a corporate level for an explosives service provider handling up to 100 blasts per day from mines, quarries and construction sites throughout the US.Flyrock risk minimisation has inspired research and the associated development of a reliable flyrock model to estimate flyrock ejection velocities and the resulting maximum projection distances of fragments. In spite of significant achievements in this area, flyrock incidents continue to occur, mostly due to implementation mistakes. An efficient preventive measure is continuous blasting process improvement that relies on on-site video recording, storage, automatic analysis and classification of the recorded blasts followed by the automatic generation of reports.In this paper, a novel blasting video analysis system that is capable of processing a large quantity of video records is presented. Blast analysis and parameter measurement are fully automated and are carried out using videos recorded with a conventional consumer camera. The blast video recording process does not require the use of surface markers, range poles or objects of a predefined size for scaling purposes.Although automatic video analysis is commonly used in many application areas, such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring and robotics, the algorithms that have been developed to recognise and track solid objects with well-defined shapes, textures and colours are not efficient at dealing with blasts, which, by their nature, have dynamically changing parameters. Moreover, very strong camera vibration caused by blasts that cannot be totally compensated by camera image stabilisers may cause conventional computer vision algorithms to fail.This paper presents novel computer vision methods developed for automatic tracking of the trajectory from a blast ejection point to the highest point reached by blast particles and the ejection velocity. The system also uses colour and motion analysis to detect the emission of toxic fumes during a blast. The solution is vibration tolerant and can differentiate foreground and background data, even in the presence of camera vibration. Moreover, the blasting video analysis method can automatically categorise correctness of the measurements and therefore indicate cases when additional visual inspections may be required to verify reports generated automatically.CITATION:Kharitonenko, I, McKenzie, C K, Papillon, B E and Popov, P, 2015. Fragmentation in sublevel caving (SLC) is vitally important. Both gravity flow and any downstream processes are affected. Reasonably coarse fragmentation may lead to larger draw bodies (isolated extraction zones) and hence potentially higher primary ore recovery and depressed/delayed waste rock inflow from above. Fewer flow disturbances are expected by mitigating oversize. In addition, it requires less boulder handling and reduces wear and possible hang-up problems in orepasses. To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale SLC, a multiyear, comprehensive measurement program was initiated. It covers the main elements for SLC, namely blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. The present paper focuses on fragmentation measurements. An image acquisition system was used to document the drawpoint and the load-haul-dump (LHD) bucket for each mucking cycle. At the beginning, four buckets (about 70 t total) were sieved to validate the results of both 2D and 3D image analysis techniques. The fundamental and specific problems are discussed herein. At the moment, fragmentation of the SLC rings is evaluated using a quick rating system and a 2D fragment delineation software. The results enable a description of fragmentation and its variation during mucking but also – combined with the gravity flow measurements – conclusions on the fragmentation for different parts of the SLC ring. Possible influences on flow disturbances and ore recovery/dilution are investigated. Raise caving is a novel cave mining method, which has been proposed for mass mining at increasing mining depths in LKAB operations. The method makes use of the raise mining technology and an active stress management approach. For the implementation the method is split into two phases, namely a de-stressing phase and a production phase. In the de-stressing phase, a slot-pillar system is established. The purpose of slots is to provide stress shadows and the purpose of the large pillars is to control stress and seismicity. The production phase follows after the de-stressing phase. Required infrastructure in the production phase is developed delayed in stress shadows and bulk extraction takes place in de-stressed zones. Eventually the pillars crush and they are extracted in the production phase. A comprehensive research and development program has been launched to develop the raise caving method towards implementation. As part of this program a full-scale test site of raise caving will be conducted as well as raise caving operations are planned for depth extensions in LKAB mines. This paper discusses the design of raise caving operations in practice at the LKAB mines. In particular, the purpose of the paper is to focus on requirements for the development and design of a raise caving operation. The development of raise caving is discussed from a systems engineering perspective as well as from a management perspective. The functional requirements in the destressing and production phase are outlined and discussed in the paper. The discussion is on basis of the main elements of the raise caving system, such as slots, stopes, pillars and infrastructure. Critical rock engineering design requirements in the de-stressing and production phase are highlighted and dependencies between individual main elements are identified. The analyses show that pillars are especially important for the success of the mining method. Overall, the analyses show that raise caving is a complex system and that its development demands a multidisciplinary approach.

Gravity amenable gold ores are those that after comminution produce liberated particles, composites and/or carriers that can be recovered by gravity separation means. Recovery depends upon mineralisation type and the comminution and concentration method used. Any in situ ore with more than 20 per cent of gold greater than 100 µm in size is likely to have a strong gravity recoverable component. A less traditional approach is where the gold is sulfide-locked and the gold carrier plus any liberated gold is recovered via continuous gravity recovery following fine crushing. Specific tests are undertaken to determine the level of gravity amenable gold within a deposit. The principal methodology is the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test, which consists of three sequential liberation and recovery stages. For continuous gravity recovery (CGR), the sample is fed over a laboratory Wilfley table to simulate continuous recovery of the gold. Tails from the feed can be progressively re-ground and re-tabled to develop a grade-recovery curve. Primary geology and gold particle size-distribution have a strong effect on the mass of sample required to provide representative results for both tests. Where low-grade ore contains very coarse gold, substantially larger sample masses are required. Experience has shown that GRG and CGR values can vary throughout an orebody, particularly within different geological-grade domains. A testing regime must consider sample frequency and support.

The Suurikuusikko gold deposit was discovered in 1987 in western Finnish Lapland, 54 km NNE from the town centre of KittilS in the volcanic belt of Central Lapland. It is hosted by tholeiitic basalts in a graphite-bearing albitite breccia. The ore is located in subvertical shear zones characterised by strong albitisation, carbonatisation and sulfidisation. The ore minerals consist of arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bournonite and rutile. Small amounts of pyrrhotite, gersdorffite, jamesonite, bornite, gudmundite, tetrahedrite, stibnite, kermesite, berthierite and native Sb are also present. Gold occurs as invisible and as 1 - 2 ¦m size inclusions in arsenopyrite and pyrite, on their grain boundaries and in fractures. The average amount of gold leached by cyanide is 2.93 per cent. The æinvisibleÆ gold contents were studied in pyrite and arsenopyrite by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) at CANMET/ MTL. Gold element distribution images show zoned patterns both in pyrite and arsenopyrite. SIMS analyses range from 343 to 55 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 217 ppm down to 0.32 ppm (detection limit 478 ppb) Au in pyrite. EPMA results range from 939 to below the detection limit 24 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 267 ppm to below 22 ppm Au in pyrite. Recovery of the refractory gold ore was studied using grinding, flotation, bio-oxidation and cyanidation tests. A sulfide bulk concentrate containing 40 ppm Au was obtained by flotation at 90 per cent recovery (As content 5.5 per cent, S content 22 per cent, and mass recovery 15 per cent). The grinding fineness in flotation was P80 -100 to 120 ¦m. At the original fineness the cyanidation recovery from the concentrate was lower than ten per cent, after ultra-fine grinding P80 -10 to 2 ¦m the Au recovery was less than 17 per cent. After bio- oxidation, Au recovery of 95 per cent was obtained in carbon-in-leach (CIL). The bio-oxidation time was two weeks in laboratory test, but after regrinding the oxidation rate was faster and recovery of Au higher. However, the selected method for the mining to be started in summer 2008 is open pit mining and mineral processing methods sulfide flotation and pressure oxidation in an autoclave. The ore reserves were estimated 31 December 2007 as: Probable 18.2 Mt with 5.1 g/t Au, Indicated 5.4 Mt with 3.0 g/t Au and Inferred 10.8 Mt with 3.4 g/t Au. The production capacity will be 3000 t/day.

Presidential Address Today I want to couple that prediction with a discussion on competitiveness and changing employment roles in our industry. A crude analysis of the intensity of use of metals in developed and undeveloped nations was undertaken by dividing the weight of copper, zinc, lead and aluminium used in countries by the population. In the developed countries which were basically the Western European States, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan, approximately 38 kilograms are used per annum. In the developing countries which were basically the South-East Asian country Korea, India, Pakistan and Taiwan, the usage is 5.3 kilograms. Thus, if the developing world is to catch up with the developed world, the intensity of use of metals will have to increase seven times. The usage of metals in the developed world is increasing at the rate of 1.5 per cent per annum while the rate of increase in the developing world is about 5.8 per cent. In this analysis, the population of the developed world was 850 million and the developing world 1.5 billion. Note that this analysis did not include Russia, China and most of the countries of South America and South Africa. I am sure that with time, these undeveloped countries will move into the developing category. In the long-term there is obviously great opportunity for us both in the primary and secondary processing required to meet world demand. Turning now to competitiveness and changing employment roles. I am sure that everyone here present is aware of the urgent need for Australia to improve its competitiveness. I want to try and relate unionism and industrial relations, management and tertiary education to our competitiveness. I wish to talk on these items as I see them in the past, the present and the future. So firstly unionism and industrial relations. It has been unfortunate for Australia that unionism was based on the United Kingdom craft system. It is not surprising that it was because UK has been the basis for almost ' all of our institutions and that has generally been of very great value to us. The craft system in our trade unions has lead to the demarcation problems of which we have all been well aware. This has been extremely limiting to the individual; it has limited his or her ability to broaden their scope of knowledge and far worse it has limited their ability to maximise their satisfaction at work as they have only been able to undertake part of a job, rather than being able to undertake a role in totality.

"Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. The management of wear surfaces in mining operations has remained largely unchanged since the inception of mining. Sacrificial wear liners are installed on the inside of chutes, hoppers and other equipment used to transfer bulk ore to protect the asset from abrasive wear caused by the flow of material. These liners are generally replaced at fixed intervals which may be determined based on historical wear rates or may be driven by other maintenance requirements for that asset. This approach does not always yield satisfactory results, especially for critical assets where the impact of downtime on production can be substantial. For such assets, a condition-based maintenance strategy has the potential to significantly increase productivity and reduce the total cost of ownership associated with the asset. However, for such a strategy to be successful, timely information on the actual condition (remaining thickness) of the wear liners is essential. This paper describes the development and implementation of a wear monitoring system that can be used to remotely and continuously report on remaining liner material thickness in real time. It details some of the challenges that were overcome when developing the system, including the design of a patented thickness measuring system that can be used in a variety of liner materials and is tolerant to the presence of ore on the wear surface. The paper also explains how a cloud-based approach enables data from the wear sensors to be integrated into external systems such as a data historian, which has been demonstrated through a collaborative project with one of the largest iron ore producers in the Pilbara. This ability to combine real time liner thickness information with other data sources, such as throughput, provides the foundation for the transition to a condition-based maintenance strategy.

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. To increase the efficiency and improve the quality of diamond drilling at Olympic Dam, mine geologists have adapted and modified common practices in order to overcome the challenges imposed by such a unique environment. Mine geologists have to take into account both the complex geology during the diamond drill hole design phase, as well as incorporating diamond drilling into the larger-scale scheduling process already employed at Olympic Dam. This study seeks to explore how such modifications have evolved over time.The geology of Olympic Dam influences the design process of diamond drill holes, particularly due to the variation of lithology and alteration, as well as the presence of magnetite and major structures within the orebody. Exclusion zones are used to manage interactions with existing and planned mining activities, and their size is dependent upon the geology of the area. Specific deviation checks are used to monitor the deviation of diamond drill holes with respect to these?zones.The highly interactive environment of Olympic Dam requires unique planning for diamond drilling, resulting in the production and implementation of both long- and short-term schedules. Long-term schedules are targeted at determining drilling locations and ensuring drilling is completed prior to stope planning, while short-term schedules aid in enabling access to ensure timely set-up of drill sites. Estimated drilling rates, determined by expected lithologies and historical data, feed into the short-term schedule to assist in managing the operation and minimising the downtime of diamond drill rigs. A mine geologist is appointed as a diamond drill coordinator to organise and manage diamond drilling at a scheduling and operational level, streamlining the entire process.Analysis of historical data shows a strong correlation between implementation of the aforementioned practices and improved drilling rates. This study shows the importance of adapting universal tasks to particular environments and circumstances. The transport network in Europe is probably one of the most important systems for the European economy and society. Trans-national transport routes play a vital role in the traffic of goods and the supply of the population. In this respect, critical road infrastructures, like bridges, tunnels or control centres, can have a bottleneck function. Any disturbance of these structures could lead to negative consequences for the population and the economy as a whole.Project SecMan – Security Manual – is a simple four-step procedure for the identification of critical road infrastructures; assessment of these infrastructures regarding various man-made threats and the determination of effective protection measures was developed. These methodologies are summarised and combined into a comprehensive best-practice manual that allows for a trans-national structured and holistic security-risk-management approach for owners and operators of road infrastructures in Europe.Currently no common processes, methodologies or standards exist in Europe regarding the consideration of security relevant events for critical road transport infrastructures, eg tunnels, control centres and bridges. Attacks on the former can have severe short- and long-term effects with high media attention. A trans-national risk management approach would increase the possibilities for prevention as well as mitigation. A trans-national emergency response strategy would increase preparedness, as well as facilitating and accelerating the reaction in the case of an event.The main objective of the project is to develop a practical process for the identification of critical road infrastructures based on generally accepted security aspects. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baizhangzi gold deposit is located in the northern North China Craton. The structural and lithological controls on the location and geometry of orebodies were studied through geologic survey, ore spatial configuration analysis and structural analysis. The orebodies of the deposit comprise auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold-bearing sulfides. The auriferous quartz-sulfide veins are dominantly hosted by the NNE- (and NE- and NW-) trending faults, which are subsidiary structures of the regional NNE-trending F2 fault. The subsidiary NNE-trending faults, having sinistral reverse kinematics, are associated with the sinistral reverse kinematics event of the F2 fault, which happened under a regional S–N-oriented compression stress field. The subsidiary NE- and NW-trending faults appear to be compressive and extensional respectively. These NE- (and NW-) trending faults are restricted to the granite intrusion and are associated with a sinistral strike-slip event of the F2 fault, which reactivated under a NW–SE-oriented compression stress field. It makes significant influence on geological evolution and distribution of different ore types that the strike of the F2 fault presents significant transition from NNE- to NE-trending in vertical. The ore-bearing disseminated host rocks, with widespread silicification and pyritisation, distribute in the lower inner contact zone of the granite intrusion, especially in the lower wavelike boundary of granite intrusion.CITATION:Xiong, L, Wei, J H and Shi, W J, 2015. Increasing growth in the minerals industry over the past decade has raised the question of whether the standard of training for new geologists has been negatively impacted. This hypothesis was tested by means of a survey. Factors considered included the quality of training and whether it has changed over the past 50 years, preferred styles of training compared to styles of training received and whether the quality of training provided by a company changed with the type or size of company. Data from 435 survey respondents showed a consistent standard of training, but a significant increase in the level of responsibility allocated to new geologists. Those with increased responsibility also had reduced access to additional support and were often asked to perform tasks for which they had little or no training. New geologists were more likely to receive better quality training in a large company (over 100 employees) that owned the mine or exploration lease. A more structured training program was more likely to provide a higher quality result than those with minimal or no structure.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

The minerals industry has enormous potential to positively contribute to sustainable development and many leading companies have concluded that their long-term success is directly linked to their ability to leave a lasting positive legacy. While there are many examples of success, there have been failures as well and much work has been done in recent years to define the role of the minerals industry in sustainable development and identify the key elements for success. In the past, our sector could point to the taxes and royalties it paid, the exports it generated and employment it created and felt confident that its contribution would be recognised and duly acknowledged. This is no longer the case. Critics of the industry have highlighted resource-rich countries that have failed to capitalise on their resource wealth and have arguably lower standards of living than their resource-poor peers û the æresource curseÆ hypothesis. Recent research has done much to clarify the factors that contribute to a countryÆs success or failure and all stakeholders in the industry now need to include these learnings in their approaches going forward. We know that our long-term success relies on embedding a company- wide approach to sustainable development into all aspects of our business operations. In this paper we highlight BHP BillitonÆs experience in the development and implementation of policies and systems designed to enhance our contribution to sustainable development. We detail the business drivers for excellence in this area and the key external codes and initiatives that have shaped our approach. The values-based BHP Billiton Charter, Sustainable Development Policy and associated Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management Standards are central to our approach. Implementation is reviewed through our HSEC audit program. One area in which we have placed particular emphasis is our approach to community development. BHP Billiton has a corporate target to contribute one per cent of its pre-tax profit on a three year rolling average to voluntary community programs. As our profit stream has increased with the minerals boom this is approaching an A$100 million commitment. In our paper we detail how we are working to ensure we maximise the value of this contribution for our communities and our shareholders.

Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. The Hart Shaft and surrounding above ground infrastructure was successfully stabilised and re-opened to tourist access. CITATION:Johnson, D, Turner, A and Hills, P, 2018. Chalcopyrite samples from two different localities were leached in oxygenated mixed chloride-sulphate lixivants at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of chalcopyrite was found to follow predominantly linear kinetics. The slope of the major region was dependent on stirring rate, oxygen flowrate and chloride concentration while only slightly dependent on the surface area of the sample leached. This region was found to predominate only at low temperatures. The oxidised chalcopyrite releases cuprous and ferric ions into solutions. Chloride ions complex these dissolved ions to effectively move the equilibrium of the leaching reaction to the right. When the level of chloride in solution was below 6 g/l, the unstable cuprous ions were found to reprecipitate with sulphur as covellite. When no chloride was present and the lixivant was a solution of sulphuric acid then ferric sulphates precipitated. The overall leaching reaction occurring in the leaching system is: CuFeS2 + 5H+ + 1.25 02 = Cu 2+ + Fe 3+ + 2S¦ + 2.5H20

The South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, is situated at Broken Hill, NSW, Australia, towards the southern end of the main lode. The leases (MLs 7 and 8) cover a length of 2400 feet along the lode outcrop and the workings extend, at this date, to a depth of 1940 feet below the collar of the original main shaft and to 825 feet below sea level. Mining operations have been continuous for about 58 years and during this period nearly 12.5 million tons of ore have been mined. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30 000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet. A typical assay for a monthly period is 14.4 per cent Ph, 5.6 ozs Ag, and 11.6 per cent Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .
