The Hail Creek coking coal deposits are situated in Central Queensland, inland from the port of Mackay. A joint venture of Australian and Japanese companies has been formed to examine the feasibility of developing these deposits for sale on the overseas markets. The project envisaged involves large scale mining operations and on site benefic- iation to wash the coal to marketable quality. Infrastructure items include a 140 kilometre railway to the coast, a port facility, and at Ilail Creek, power and water supplies, roads and communications, and accommodation for a substantial workforce. The need for town development and the responsibility for the development are established. The town planning implications of coal production at the rate of five million long tons of washed coal per annum from open cut and underground mines are considered. A procedure for estimating the size of the town is expounded and the town size is determined. The factors influencing site selection are explained and a site is suggested. A method of designing the town is described and comments are made on developmental aspects. Spaciousness and preservation featuring the natural environment will be the theme of the town development.

Alcoa of Australia's Del Park mining op eration is centred 9 km. east of the Pinjarra alumina refinery, and is centrally locatedwith- in the 10, 000 sq. km. lease which the Company holds for bauxite in the Darling Ranges. An- other mining operation is situated near the township of Jarrahdale, and supplies bauxite to the Kwinana refinery. Definition of the bauxite ore, development works and mining to the ore haulage stage, are identical for both mining operations. Exper- ience, and production cost figures, obtained from the Jarrahdale mine, where 100 tonne trucks are used to haul ore to a fixed crushing plant, led to the development of the Del Park mining concept with increased mobility of op- erations. The crushing-conveying-stockpiling arrangement at Del Park consists of a 1200 t. p. h. mobile crusher feeding bauxite to an overland conveyor system which transports the ore approximately 6. 66 km. to the stockpile area in the refinery. In the refinery raw mat- erials area the bauxite is distributed into 200, 000 tonne stockpiles by means of a travel- ling boom stacker.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. It is a practice, however, which is extending ag the effect of the impurities in zinc on products manufactured therefrom becomes widely recognized.The notes hereunder are intended to briefly survey the principal uses to which high-gr.ade zinc is being put, and, wherever possible, to indicate the effect of the impurities normally present in the lower grades of zinc.In the United States zinc is graded into five divisions, known respectively as "High-grade" "Intermediate" "Brass Special" "Selected," and "Prime Western." The maximum amounts of impurities allowed in the various grades are indicated in Table I,which is compiled from data published by the American Society of Testing Materials:In addition, it is specified in an cases that the slabs shall be reasonably free from surface corrosion or adhering foreign matter. Rarely do opportunities arise allowing closure of a mine site to be planned as a key beneficial land use asset within a new urban growth area; particularly so well prior to cessation of mining.Pit lakes are common mine closure legacies for many open cut mines and may form in open cut mine voids extending below the water table upon closure. Mine closure guidelines increasingly require post-mining land uses of equivalent capacity to premining conditions and that minimise long-term post-mining liabilities and maximise benefits to stakeholders and the environment. However, risks presented by pit lakes are regularly neglected in closure planning or are not able to be addressed to allow beneficial end use of the lake or surrounding land.This paper describes strategic planning initiated by quarry owners ten years before mining ceases. In liaison with the planning agencies, the planned closure of a large 100-year-old limestone quarry pit will form a lake on mine completion, with a well-considered beneficial end use in an urban setting in mind. The quarry pit and adjoining land at Batesford South about the edge of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Geelong is experiencing growth pressures that necessitate development of a new growth area from about 2025.A multidisciplinary expert team assessed the constraints, opportunities and feasibility of rehabilitating the quarry and pit lake and developing the surrounding land as Geelong’s next urban growth area.The concept is exciting and demonstrates that a former mine site could become a valued home to about 40 000–45 000 people. With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. Many mining companies routinely use benchmarking to review their operational activities and associated costs. The aim is to measure operational performance against industry norms, and identify areas where a company is performing better or worse than industry best practice. The goal is continuous improvement.In general, mine technical services, including mining geology activities, are not routinely benchmarked. There are exceptions, such as the cost of drilling per metre and the average discovery cost per unit of metal, but generally mining geology activities are only included indirectly in mining benchmarking studies.Aspects of benchmarking can play a critical role in assisting mining geologists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide. Industry norms for many generic mining geology functions have not been developed and measured, and therefore it is impossible to use external benchmarking to assess performance against other mines. But when used in parallel with quantifying the value of mining geology functions and establishing strategic goals for the team, key components of benchmarking methodology can provide essential feedback on how a team is performing against these strategic goals.CITATION:Berry, M, 2014. The high cost of sampling systems is largely due to the fact that indiv- idual mechanical type sampling units must be installed at the discharge end of ore/pulp pipelines, that is, at points where the pipeline discharges into pump sumps or the like. A considerable economic advantage may be obtained in the use of a samp- ling device that can be installed at any point in the path of the trans- porting pipe line. Initial tests on a vertical line with an injection sampler using iron ore concentrates reveal the validity of this type sample versus that taken with a mechanical sampler. A descrip- tion of the injection sampler shows its simplicity of installation, requir- ing minimum downtime on existing lines.

In the traditional analysis of airblast and ground vibration, it is often assumed that only that single blasthole possessing the maximum charge weight (or a small group of blastholes initiating in an 8 ms time window) will determine the peak level of airblast or vibration. This assumption is examined in light of waveform superposition, and is found to be unsound. More rational alternatives are given in which all blastholes (or a selected number of blastholes) are assumed to contribute, in varying degrees, to the peak vibration or airblast. However, it is also shown that there is generally no precise solution for determining the number of blastholes that contribute to the peak level. The technique of waveform superposition does not rely on evaluating which group of holes produced the peak, and so is the preferred method for prediction. Some numerical and analytical models of wave superposition for airblast and vibration are also reviewed and recent approaches discussed. The directionality of airblast, in particular, is analysed in detail using a new superposition model that is constructed of two submodels, onenumerical, the other analytical. This model shows that the airblast from even a single blasthole can be highly directional. The detail of this model is commercially sensitive and will not be discussed. Only results and a broad discussion will be given.

Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. Arsenic, often associated with precious metals ore deposits, is a major contaminant released during large-scale gold mining. Because of the complex oxidation/reduction and sorption behaviour of As, prediction of the long-term mobility of As in pit lakes is uncertain. The behaviour of As in pit lakes is investigated in this paper by conducting a series of laboratory experiments where As is allowed to adsorb onto pit lakes sediments. Experiments were conducted over a range of pH with both As(III) and As(V) allowed to adsorb onto sediments collected from existing pit lakes found in the three main orebody types in Nevada, USA; porphyry copper, quartz-adularia gold, and Carlin Trend type gold deposits. Results from adsorption experiments show that As(V) and As(III) adsorption is strongly pH dependent with higher uptake at pH 5 and lower uptake at pH 9 for As(V) and higher uptake at pH 9 and lower uptake at pH 5 for As(III). This behaviour, as expected for oxyanions, has been described previously for agricultural soils, iron oxides, and Carlin Trend heap materials. Maximum adsorption of As(V) for the Carlin Trend type gold sediment was 3.0 g/kg at pH 5, 2.0 g/kg for the quartz-adularia sediment, and 0.9 g/kg for the copper porphyry sediment. Maximum adsorption of As(III) for Carlin Trend type gold sediment was 2.5 g/kg at pH 9, 2.2 g/kg for the quartz-adularia sediment, and 2.1 for the copper porphyry sediment. Adsorption isotherms are non-linear and show Freundlich isotherm behaviour. Variations in sorption between the different pit lake sediments under similar conditions can be explained by differences in the elemental composition of the sediment. Most rock forming elements from XRF analysis are similar in quantity except for Fe. The Fe content is highest in the Carlin Trend type gold deposit sediments and lowest in porphyry copper deposit sediments and is the third most abundant element in all three sediments. The Fe content of the sediments correlates well with the amount of As sorption seen in the laboratory experiments.

Pacific Hydro, a leading renewable energy company from Australia, is developing a series of cascading run-of-river hydro electricity projects in the Cachapoal Valley at the base of the Andes Mountains some 100 km south of Santiago in Chile.These projects involve extensive tunnelling and underground works. The first of these projects is called Chacayes (110 MW installed capacity) and is now under construction with Astaldi SpA of Italy and Fe Grande of Chile as the EPC contractor. Astaldi SpA also has an equity stake in the project. It involves 6 km of tunnels between 5 m and 7 m diameter, of which 2.3 km is by tunnel boring machine (TBM) (5 m diameter).This paper outlines the local and regional geology, the scope of the Chacayes project, actual tunnel excavation rates and support, and compares the decision making on Chacayes between a choice of traditional drill and blast excavation versus TBM.The paper also outlines the next project planned to be developed by Pacifi c Hydro in the valley – the 140+MW Nido de Aguila project involving a main tunnel drive of 11 km with two intermediate adits, plus a 388 m shaft and underground powerhouse. The main tunnel drives are likely to be excavated by two hard rock TBMs (5 m diameter) but will need to be able to withstand high overburden pressures of up to 1300 m.Subsequent projects in the planning stages include the downstream Coya II project with two tunnels totalling approximately 10 km, one of which may be by TBM.

Sulphur partition between metal and slag has been examined on a cast-by-cast basis for BTIP furnaces. Partition values. were calculated from thermodynamic equilibrium data together with oxygen activities computed from the manganese partition. The S-C interaction coefficient, esc , was treated as an adjust- able parameter and the agreement between calculated and measured S partition values optimized. In the case of furnaces operating with low viscosity slags this procedure led to estimates of esc in close agreement with previously measured values. The same analysis applied to daily average data for several Kawasaki Steel furnaces led to the same esti- mates of e c s , indicating a similar approach to equilibrium. Silicon partition between metal and slag has been examined on a time average basis and found to be far removed from thermodynamic equilibrium for most Australian furnaces. A study of Japanese furnaces of comparable size reveals a temperature dependence of Si parti- tion which appears to be close to equilibrium. Australian furnaces approach this behaviour only when operating with low viscosity slags. A preliminary examination of the effects of burdening with TiO 2 on the silicon partition is also reported.

The Australian bulk explosives industry has matured significantly over the last five years and it would appear that the rest of the world is following suit. This maturity is characterised by the technical sophistication of modem bulk explosives, an increase in the technical competence of the explosives consumer and a greater openness in the debate on the quality and performance of explosives. The principal mechanism by which these advances have been made is undoubtedly commercial competition in the market place although a new element, technical competition between manufacturers and independent professionals, has and will continue to play an important role in the development of the industry. The relationship between the explosives manufacturer and consumer is necessarily both complementary and competitive. This paper identifies the need for the consumer to take a more prominent role in the critical analysis of the performance of explosives and to use his commercial influence to direct explosives manufacturers at least in the direction required for the future technical development of the industry.

The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia Limited (ER&S) operates a copper smelting and refining plant and is situated close to the heart of the highly industrialised area of Port Kembla. In March, 1982 the Company entered into an undertaking with the State Pollution Control Commission (SPCC) to monitor ambient levels of sulphur dioxide (S02) gases present in the atmosphere in the surrounding urban area. Despite the use of a 200 metre high stack for dispersal of the smelter waste gas stream at ER&S, two local suburbs, Warrawong and Primbee were experiencing on occasions high ambient concentrations of S02 resulting in discomfort to local residents. In late March 1982, ER&S installed a highly advanced S02 monitoring system to continuously monitor the levels at Warrawong. The system was extended to include S02 monitoring at Primbee in November 1982, and further extended in June 1983, to include an input of meteorological data. Initially the system was designed to monitor and react to high concentrations of S02 at either of the two monitoring stations. Currently however, refinement is taking place to allow a predictive nature to be built into the system such that it not only reacts to an adverse situation but can predict weather patterns likely to cause high concentrations and thus avoid these events. The entire system is still undergoing a growth and development period, however the results obtained to date are pleasing to both the Company and the SPCC.

Sedimentary structures are described from the WiIlyama Complex, New South Wales. Their presence confirms lithological layering within the metasediments as bedding. These primary structures occur not only in low grade rocks as previously reported by other workers, but also in areas of medium and high grade metamorphism.Sedimentary structures include graded beds, cross beds, ripple marks, and ball and pillow structures.The observed parallelism of the early schistosity and bedding in the Broken Hill area has previously led to the idea of transposition by isoclinal folding.In the areas mapped, small scale transposition is precluded on the basis of1. uniform facing of sedimentary structures over wide areas, and2. the existence of large areas in which the early schistosity is oblique to bedding.

The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. Seismic systems are a tool for the monitoring and forecasting the rock mass response to excavation. Common issues encountered at mine site audits and reviews are: how to design an effective seismic system, implementation of the design, interpretation of seismic source results and understanding the reliability of the seismic source. These issues are often a function of several items including: • Experience of site personnel in undertaking seismic system design. • Personnel not envisioning multiple phases of system expansion to understand system robustness issues. • System design/expansion occurring in response to damaging seismic activity rather than planned expansion of a system • The mine access development is often localised in comparison to the total orebody being mined hence, planning sensors in longholes in advance of development rather than in short holes close to development will improve the three-dimensional aspect of the network. • Limited site processing of the seismic event data, hence engineers do not see the uncertainty associated with event location, size, source and system layout. Mine site users require a framework to appreciate the challenges and limitations in locating large events. For example, event locations are given as precise measurements (to the nearest centimetre) whereas the volume of deformation resulting in the event often has dimensions of tens of metres or more (as defined by the source radius). A stronger awareness of the uncertainty of rock mass yield within large seismic sources will assist site users in the interpretation of rock mass damage. The encountered design and implementation errors are reviewed and discussed with a practical set of rules presented to provide a robust seismic system that provides consistent results and increases the user’s understanding of uncertainty in source location and size. The authors’ experience across multiple mine sites, seismic systems and damaging seismic events over a 30 year period has been summarised into practical rules for site personnel of all experience levels.

To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes.
