Firedamp drainage has become an essential part of many mine environmental systems, and new applications are arising. Installations are evolving further to satisfy ever changing basic requirements, standards, and iniilny needs. In this paper, water seal, vacuum based installations are considered, as well as moni- toring, protective and control systems which have been developed for continuous, manless, and trouble free operation. Some factors affecting plant capacity and extractor per- formance are identified and assessed. INTRODUCTION Firedamp drainage applications are incr- easing world wide as mining engineers strive for improved safety and security, and further concentration of coal output. Fewer and fewer mines are able nowadays to satisfy coal prod- uction and firedamp control requirements solely by air dilution or by air dilution and underground firedamp extraction plants. As a result, dependence on surface extraction plants is increasing. This paper deals with som requirements and applications of such installations. I. Soon after the Broken Hill Limited started operations at their Iron and Steel Works at Newcastle, NSW, it was found necessary to install a mill for rolling small merchant bars, rounds, etc.An arrangement of the first mill laid down is shown on Plate 1., Fig. 1. This mill commenced operations on the 18th July, 1917.The feed for this mill was rolled in the existing 18-in. mill and sheared to the lengths required before being delivered to the billet storage yard. The billet storage yard is 90 ft. span, and is served by one 10-ton electric overhead travelling crane. Billets were placed on the billet bed preparatory to being charged into the heating furnace.The heating furnace was of the continuous recuperative with end discharge and had a hearth 40 ft. long by 10 ft. wide. The billets were pushed through the furnace by means of two hydraulic rams, which could either act together and push one row of billets, or act singly and push two rows of billets. This furnace was fired by producer gas from the producers shown on Plate I., Fig. l.The gas was conveyed to the furnace by means of a brick underground flue.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath mid- ocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and OIB, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100,000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50,000 years prior to eruption.

This paper describes a new computer program which can significantly increase the Net Present Value of either an open cut or underground mine by optimising the cut-offs used during the operating life of the mine. It was developed over a period of about three years by Whittle Programming Pty Ltd of Melbourne, Australia. Several authors have contributed to the theory behind this work, but the ideas were further developed, consolidated, and clearly explained by Lane (1988). It was this book that triggered the development of the new program. The paper starts with an explanation of the theory behind this type of optimisation, and then goes on to describe the computer methods used to optimise the different parts of the problem.

The eastern third of Australia contains an unrivalled Phanerozoic rock record generated by the regional interaction of Gondwanaland with the Pacific and by the global effect of the 400 m.y. Pangaea - Panthalassa cycle. Between the latest Proterozoic (600 Ma) breakup of Proto-Pangaea and the mid-Carboniferous coalescence of the dispersed continents in Pangaea, the Lachlan and Thomson Foldbelts accreted to the craton by Mariana-type (backarc basin) and Chilean-type (continental margin) subduction from eastward jumps of the Palaeo- Pacific rim. Further jumps of the rim of the Permian and Mesozoic Pacific, now expanded to Panthalassa, accreted the New England Foldbelt to the craton. An Early Permian rift basin was succeeded by a Late Permian to mid-Triassic foreland basin which extended between the craton and the foldbelt behind the 10000 km Panthalassan rim, from the Bowen Basin of Queensland to South America, and was host to the productive coal measures of eastern Australia, as the succeeding Jurassic and Early Cretaceous foreland and epicratonic basins included the coal measures, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin. The magmatic arc on the Australian margin ended after the mid-Cretaceous uplift along the Queensland coast that initiated southwestward drainage from the high Pacific rim. The Chilean-type subduction that had prevailed since the Devonian was superseded shortly afterwards by Mariana-type subduction with the successive generation of the back-arc basins of the Tasman Sea, Coral Sea, and other southwest Pacific basins by the migration of the island arc to its present position 2500 km eastward of Australia.

The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost-has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this exceedingly interesting subject. In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

The results of full-scale tests on precast segment made at University of Roma are presented. The segments were cast using fibre-reinforced concrete produced without any traditional reinforcement, by using fiber made in high-strength steel and a new type of anchorage.Bending tests were performed in order to check the bearing capacity of the segments under the flexural actions; these occur during de-moulding, handling, storage phases as well as in the in situ condition (due to asymmetric soil pressure). Furthermore, point load tests simulating the TBM thrust were performed, in order to study the construction phase (excavation).The results show that the segment response largely respects the material testing and design advice according to the Fib Model Code 2010. This paper reports on the results of several years of monitoring rehabilitation at a silica sand mine on the Swan Coastal Plain, south of Perth. Mining here occurs below the regional watertable and leaves a post-mine landscape of dredge pond voids (pit lakes) with surrounding battered slopes. The restoration we recommended was to develop the pit lakes as wetlands of regional analogue and value. Several different restoration techniques have been applied to re-vegetate pit lake slopes over many years which have enabled an evaluation of reasons for success/failure of different restoration approaches. Learning acquired clearly showed the benefits of using fresh topsoil for restoration over topsoil that has been stockpiled for several years. Most topsoil used in restoration was from seasonal wetlands and consequently restoration was most successful in the riparian zone from the edge of pit lakes to about 2 m vertically above the water table. Topsoil restored areas above this level remained poor in plant species and cover. Conversely, remedial seeding/planting proved largely unsuccessful. Permanently and seasonally flooded pit lake margins recolonised relatively quickly and successfully with native sedges and rushes. Development of rehabilitated upper slope plant communities over time was evident with loss of typical wetland species and greater growth and survivorship of upland and dampland plant species on mid to upper rehabilitated slopes. Plant communities of lower slopes showed a converse pattern of development, with a shift towards a more typical wetland composition. We believe matching topsoil to site and development of topographic profiles similar to natural wetlands of the region are the keys to optimising restoration success of sand mines with shallow water tables.

Block or panel caving technology is far removed from that of the top slicing and block caving of the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The rapid mechanisation and expansion of these methods in the late twentieth century was as much a result of the change of the technology of the unit operations of development, ground support, drilling and blasting and transport as it was of the advances in geotechnical understanding and practice. The small footprint gravity and scraper block caving mines with boundary weakening, rail transport and shaft hoisting of the early to mid-twentieth century have been replaced by massive high lift panel caves using preconditioning of the ore, large load-haul-dump units, adjacent crushers and conveyors to surface. The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. Characterisation of hydrothermal gold systems across multiple scales is increasingly important for our understanding of ore deposit genesis and for targeting new mineralisation. Published work on multiscale mineral system exploration focuses either on applying a single technique across scales or on incorporating a series of techniques across a limited scale range. Typically, these studiesÆ spatial scales vary from crustal to deposit-scale and have successfully linked the distribution and shape of major orebodies to fault systems or varying lithostratigraphy. But, is this scale small enough to answer fundamental questions about the relative timing, processes interactions and mechanisms involved in the formation of ore deposits? We illustrate the potential of a deposit to microscale study, using the Plutonic Gold Mine in Western Australia as an example, to better understand hydrothermal gold systems. This paper outlines mining practice in the South Alligator valley between 1954 and 1964. The valley is situated in the Northern Territory 130 miles south east of Darwin and trends north west. The centrally located El Sherana camp is 219 miles by road from Darwin via Pine Creek on the Stuart Highway. 64 miles of gravelled road with low level bridges and culverts which were completed in 1959, connect Pine Creek with El Sherana. This road is often impassable during severe wet season conditions. Earliest recorded production was during the years 1956-57 from the El Sherana and Palette miles, by shallow open cut and cut and fill stoping from small shafts. 4600 tons of high grade ore was processed by hand sorting of massive pitchblende followed by gravity concentra- tion. At the same time 627 tons of ore was won from a small open cut at Sliesbeck 35 miles SE of El Sherana. The second and most important phase of production was to fill two small contracts with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (U.K.A.E.A.) totalling 700 tons of U 08. About 144,000 tons of ore was mined from widely separated smal' orebodies and mining practice varied from small open cuts to gloryholes, open stoping and cut and fill stoping. In some orebodies a combination of several methods was employed to complete production. Final deliveries were made to the U.K.A.E.A. In 1964.

In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

After a short theoretical comparison of various typical large bell tops with the bell-less top for segregation and other ,ffects on the material flowing through the equipment proper, a comparative analysis between classical and the new burdening in the furnace is given, showing the theoretical effects of distribution and segregation on the horizontal pressure variations, temperature values and gas composition in the stack. Then some typical theoretical charging patterns of the bell-less top for wall and centre temperature adjusting, pressure drop corrections, dissymmetric local action for blow-in and scaffolding are described. Finally the available practical results on furnaces equipped with the bell-less top are compared with the theoretical statements made before and conclusions indicate that the new approach to burdening blast furnaces is a real improvement.

The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Among countries afflicted with insLantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, Australia is noteworthy because of lesser disturbances of the seams and of the occurrence of CO2 in the seam gas from place to place. Research sLarted with the 1954 occurrences at Collinsville and Metropolitan Collieries leading to early publications reviewing the problem, describing occurrences and assessing variations in proneness factors in the two affected coal basins.The basic requirements for proneness include coals of high gas sorptive capacity, high ground stress, use of a mining method which provides higher stress concentrations and limits emission of seam gas, including high rates of advance. With CO2 in the seam gas proneness is greater.The mechanism is complex and not fully understood, but involves the coal, the roof, the floor, the gas, the mine opening, the ventilation, the kind of work and the rate of work. Geological disturbances such as faults and dykes increase proneness and tend to localise occurrences. On-occurrence of outbursts in some mines is difficult to explain.Outbursts are seen as a continuing threat to modem deep Australian mining of high rank coal.The simplest contributory factor to reduce is gassiness - despite the low permeability of outbursting coals - and present practices are showing promise. The greatest challenges for the future are partial degasification to below a known threshold figure and confirmation that this reduction is achieved and identification of anomalous geological structures ahead, the most likely locations for instantaneous outbursts to occur. The advances made to date give promise of a future with reducing experiences of uncontrolled instantaneous outbursts. For the Bulli seam particularly, working to achieve prediction and prevention is most urgent.
